We report a Ag-nanoparticle (AgNP)-based substrate-independent bactericidal hydrogel coating with thermoresponsive antibacterial property. To attach the hydrogel coating onto model substrate, we first coated ene-functionalized dopamine on the substrate, and then the hydrogel thin layer was formed on the surface via the UV light initiated surface cross-linking copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and sodium acrylate (AANa). Then, Ag ions were adsorbed into the hydrogel layers and reduced to AgNPs by sodium borohydride. The coating showed robust bactericidal ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus toward both contacted bacteria and the bacteria in the surrounding. Upon a reduction of the temperature below the LCST of PNIPAAm, the improved surface hydrophilicity and swollen PNIPAAm could detach the attached dead bacteria. Meanwhile, the long-lasting and regenerable antibacterial properties could be achieved by repeatedly loading AgNPs. By precisely controlling the AgNP loading amounts, the coating showed excellent hemocompatibility and no cytotoxity. Additionally, the coating could be applied to modify cell culture plate, since it could support cell adhesion and proliferation at 37 °C, while detach the cell by changing the temperature below lower critical solution temperature without the treatment of proteases. The study thus presents a promising way to fabricate thermoresponsive and regenerable antibacterial surfaces on diverse materials and devices for biomedical applications.

We herein used a low cost and facile one-step method for synthesizing fluorescent carbon-doped silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) under mild reaction conditions. The fluorescence spectra of Si NPs showed maximum excitation and emission wavelengths at 370 nm and 450 nm, respectively. The fluorescence of the obtained Si NPs can be selectively and efficiently quenched by the Hg 2+ and Ag + . The fluorescent Si NPs showed high sensitivity toward Hg 2+ and Ag + with detection limits of 2.676 μM and 0.457 μM, respectively. Moreover, the sensing ability of Si NPs for Hg 2+ and Ag + were successfully carried out in real water samples, which offered the merits of high sensitivity and high selectivity. In addition, Si NPs were also successfully employed as a promising fluorescent label for the visualization of latent fingerprints. As far as we know, this is first time that silicon nanoparticles are used to visualize latent fingerprints. The fingerprints on different surfaces (silicon wafer, patterned coin, glass sheet, copper sheet and rough plastic board) developed with this Si NPs showed very good fluorescent images with the third level under ultraviolet excitation. The method using fluorescent Si NPs as fluorescent marks provides a variety of advantages including enhanced contrast, retaining stability and non-toxicity. In addition, Si NPs showed highly non-toxic for cellular media, the efficient bioimaging of cellular imaging was enabled after incubation of HepG2 cells in the presence of Si NPs.

The next-generation energy storage devices are expected to be flexible, cost-effective, and high power storage devices to complement or replace rigid batteries and conventional capacitors for wearable electronic device applications. In this regard, a scalable and cost-effective fabrication of all-printed solid-state microsupercapacitors (MSCs) involving self-template synthesis of Ag@PPy nanocomposites (NCs) as active materials is demonstrated. The as-obtained Ag@PPy NCs exhibit high specific capacitance and are formulated as screen printing inks that are printed to form electrodes on plastic substrates. The Ag current collectors, Ag@PPy NC electrodes, and gel electrolyte are screen printed and fabricated as flexible all-solid-state MSCs exhibiting excellent capacitive features, including remarkable mechanical flexibility of 77.6% after 1000 bending cycles, superior stability of 82.6% after 10000 cycles, and high energy density of 0.00433 mW h cm −2 . The Ag@PPy inks are easily prepared and more than 40 printed MSCs are fabricated on flexible plastic substrates in less than 30 min. It is envisioned that the fully printed flexible all-solid-state MSCs could be a promising candidate for flexible energy storage devices.

A cyclometalated ruthenium complex ( 1 ) using 2-phenylbenzimidazole as a C,N-ligand was developed as a colorimetric chemosensor to detect Ag + ions. Upon the addition of Ag + ions, the absorption spectra of complex 1 demonstrated no change in CH 3 CN solution. However, an excellent solution color change from dark-green to purple and absorption spectral change with a blue-shift of 27 nm (from 612 to 585 nm) were clearly observed after Ag + ions were added to the solution of 1 with 2-fold of fluoride (denoted as 1 + F − ). When Ag + ions were replaced by other common metal ions, the solution color changed from green to red. Therefore, the solution of 1 + F − can be used to distinguish Ag + from the other common metal ions. The absorption intensity at 612 nm exhibited a good linear correlation for the detection of Ag + ion from 0 to 4 µM with a detection limit of 0.34 µM. According to the absorption and 1 HNMR spectral changes of complex 1 , the reaction mechanism is proposed to be as a coordination between silver ion and the deprotonated nitrogen in imidazole. However, the interactions of other metal ions with 1 + F − are related to a proton transfer process.

Visible-light driven photocatalyst, Ag/ZnO flower (ZnO Fl) heterostructures, was prepared on indium doped tin oxide (ITO) glass via a simple photoreduction method without surfactants. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scan electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra and photocurrent response. The results show that ZnO FRs are wurtzite phase with single crystalline grown along the [0 0 1] direction and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) located on the surface are metallic. The binding energy of Ag 3d for the Ag/ZnO Fls sample shifts remarkably to the lower binding energy compared with the corresponding value of pure metallic Ag attribute to the interaction between Ag and ZnO Fls. Ag/ZnO Fl heterostructures exhibit higher visible-light driven photocatalytic activity. It is suggested that photo-induced electrons are generated from Ag due to surface plasmon resonance, and transfer from Ag to ZnO Fls. Then the electrons interact with adsorbed oxygen, finally forming hydroxyl radicals ( OH), and the visible-light driven photocatalytic efficiency is enhanced. The proposed mechanism is further confirmed by the photoluminescence and transient photocurrent response. Additionally, the as-prepared Ag/ZnO Fls/ITO as a convenient photocatalytic device can be recycled without centrifugation.

In recent years, there is significant interest in Cu 2 SnS 3 (CTS) thin film solar cells owing to the eco-friendly nature and abundant elemental composition. However, the efficiency prepared in laboratory settings for these solar cell remains relatively low, primarily due to serious open-circuit voltage losses. Cation substitution is one of the strategies to alleviate this problem. In this work, Ag and Ge dual-cation substitution in CTS is proposed, which occupy partial Cu and Sn lattice sites respectively. Investigation reveals that substituting Cu with part Ag increases the band gap slightly, promotes grain growth, and improves crystallinity of CTS films. Simultaneously, Ge incorporation shifts the conduction band upwards to some extent, while reducing grain boundaries, due to increasing the grain size. As a result, the incorporation of 6 % Ag resulted in an optimal efficiency (PCE) of 2.78 %. Furthermore, employing dual-cation substitution with 6 % Ag and 6 % Ge is employed, the CTS device achieved an optimal efficiency of 3.15 %. This work develops the synergistic effect of Ag and Ge dual-cation substitution in CTS device and confirms that this approach can improve device performance, thus providing new research ideas for advancing the development of CTS device.

Ag–SiO 2 nanocomposites (NCs) with “plum-pudding” structure have been synthesized using a facile reverse micelle method. The as-synthesized Ag–SiO 2 NCs were calcined at 623 K to remove the surfactants and then characterized by XRD , FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, ICP and N 2 adsorption–desorption. The obtained results demonstrated that many ultrafine Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with size of ~2 nm are well dispersed in each SiO 2 nanosphere (28 nm). In comparison with free Ag NPs and SiO 2 supported Ag NPs, the Ag–SiO 2 NCs exhibited a better catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with a turnover frequency of 489 h −1 at room temperature. Ag–SiO 2 NCs also displayed a superior catalytic activity for hydrogenation of 2-NP and 3-NP. The activation energy of Ag–SiO 2 NCs was estimated to be about 34.4 kJ mol −1 , which was lower than most of the reported values for the same reaction using Ag-based catalysts, indicating the superior catalytic performance of these plum-pudding structured catalysts.

In the present work, a novel multistage structure dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), which consists of Ag nanowires (AgNWs), TiO 2 nanoparticles and graphene wrapped TiO 2 mesoporous microspheres (GTMs), was fabricated by using simple spin coating steps. The aim of this study was to modify the bandgap of GTMs by using graphene so as to promote the light absorption of GTMs in the visible light region and in turn to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs. Additionally, graphene and AgNWs can enhance the electron transfer in the DSSC to further improve the PCE of DSSCs. The effect of AgNWs and GTMs light scatting layer on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs was investigated. The results showed that a PCE of 7.42% was achieved for the DSSC co-modified by GTMs and AgNWs, which was about twice as much as that for the DSSCs only with a TiO 2 nanoparticle layer (with a PCE of 3.53%). This present study might open a new avenue for the improvement of the PCE of DSSCs.

As a newly appeared biomimetic platform and universal surface modification agent, polydopamine (PDA) has been paid great attention recently. However, the fabrication of multifunctional hollow PDA-based nanostructures remains a challenge and has been rarely reported. Herein, a facile method to prepare multifunctional hollow Fe3O4/PDA@Ag spherical composites is reported. The in situ embedding of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the formation of a PDA shell have been achieved in a single system employing carboxylic-capped polystyrene (PS-COOH) spheres as a hard template, which can be selectively dissolved by tetrahydrofuran. Subsequently, silver nanoparticles were anchored on the PDA surface via in situ reduction by the PDA layers, leading to a multifunctional hollow PDA-based composite, i.e., Fe3O4/PDA@Ag. This newly prepared composite could efficiently catalyze the degradation of 4-nitrophenol and rhodamine B with NaBH4 as a reducing agent, and the reaction rate constants were calculated using the pseudo-first-order reaction equation. Compared to non-hollow PS@Fe3O4/PDA@Ag, the hollow composite exhibited an enhanced performance toward both reactions without a significant loss in activity even after ten cycles. This multifunctional hollow PDA-based composite may find potential applications in other domains like heavy metal removal or antibacterial applications.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been reported to be the most efficient promoter for hydrate-based natural gas storage and transportation, however, foam generation during hydrate dissociation seriously affects its application. Nano-metal particles have also been demonstrated to be efficient promoters, nevertheless their poor stability is a serious problem. In this work, we first fixed –SO3− groups (similar to the hydrophilic group of SDS) covalently on polystyrene through soap-free emulsion polymerization to synthesize –SO3−-coated nanopolymers, and by tuning their morphology they existed as amorphous polystyrene macromolecules (–SO3−@PSMM) or uniform polystyrene nanospheres (–SO3−@PSNS). Afterwards, we grafted nano-Ag particles with the size of 2–5 nm on the –SO3−-coated nanopolymers through electrostatic adsorption and in situ reduction to prepare Ag&–SO3−-coated nanopolymers (denoted as Ag&–SO3−@PSMM and Ag&–SO3−@PSNS), which were then used for the first time to promote methane hydrate formation. When 0.5 mmol L−1 amorphous Ag&–SO3−@PSMM was used at an initial pressure of 6 MPa and temperature of 275.15 K, the induction period was 32.2 ± 7.9–60.8 ± 14.2 min, the growth period was 108.8 ± 8.2–177.1 ± 38.9 min and the methane storage capacity reached 143.9 ± 3.7–145.2 ± 1.2 v/v, whereas when the spherical Ag&–SO3−@PSNS was used at 0.5 mmol L−1, the induction period and growth period were 17.8 ± 2.8–38.5 ± 8.0 and 39.6 ± 2.8–42.1 ± 0.9 min, respectively; and the storage capacity reached 149.3 ± 1.2–151.3 ± 3.0 v/v, indicating that Ag&–SO3−@PSNS were much better promoters compared with Ag&–SO3−@PSMM. Moreover, Ag&–SO3−@PSNS exhibited excellent recycling performance for 10 cycles of methane hydrate formation–dissociation. To sum up, the Ag&–SO3−-coated nano-promoters developed in this work showed significant potential in achieving the industrial application of hydrate-based natural gas storage and transportation.

Abstract We prepared the carboxymethyl-dithiocarbamate-functionalized silica nanoparticle for detecting silver ions in aqueous media. The functionalized silica nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The functionalized silica nanoparticles realize highly sensitive and selective detection for Ag + in aqueous solution with an apparent color change over a pH range of 4–6 and under interfering ions. The functionalized silica nanoparticles allow fast detection for Ag + at 90 °C with a low minimum detectable concentration (0.09 mM). And a remarkable color change also occurs in the presence of Ag + solutions containing EDTA. This developed technique can easy and fast detect silver ions by the naked eye without using any sophisticated instrumentation. Graphical Abstract
