A novel porous Al2O3 layer/AgNPs–Hemin composite for degradation of azo dyes under visible and UV irradiation

Zhouzhou Feng,Jiajie Yu,Jinming Kong,Tianhe Wang

In this paper, a photocatalytic system for effectively degrading azo dyes is described. The nanostructured porous Al 2 O 3 layer on glass substrate (PAOG)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)–Hemin composites were synthesized via photochemical reduction of Ag, self-assembly of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) on AgNPs and subsequently linking Hemin to MUA via coordination bond. PAOG as a nanoporous template was chemically durable, highly porous and allowed chemicals conveniently immobilized on the glass surface. PAOG had a BET surface area of 151   m 2 /g which facilitated the immobilization of AgNPs. The composite was characterized by BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photoreaction degradation processes were examined by UV/vis spectroscopy. Methyl orange (MO) and Acid red 18 solutions were used to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of PAOG/AgNPs–Hemin composite under visible light and UV irradiation. Compared with PAOG/Hemin, the PAOG/AgNPs–Hemin composite had enhanced photocatalytic efficiency due to higher electron transfer efficiency from AgNPs to Hemin. This novel composite with enhanced broad spectrum photocatalytic properties has promising potentials in degradation of dyes by UV and visible light utilization.

Promotion effect of nickel for Cu–Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts in the transfer dehydrogenation of primary aliphatic alcohols

Yang Xiaomei,Fu Xiaomin,Bu Ningning,Han Li,Wang Jianfeng,Song Chengying,Su Yunlai,Zhou Lipeng,Lu Tianliang

Cu–Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 bimetallic catalysts were developed for anaerobic dehydrogenation of non-activated primary aliphatic alcohols to aldehydes. Systematic investigation about the promotion effect of nickel on the catalytic performance was carried out. Hydrogenation of C=C bond rather than C=O bond, was significantly improved over Cu–Ni/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst by introducing nickel, which interprets the good conversion of primary aliphatic alcohols. This work would contribute to design new catalysts for dehydrogenation of primary aliphatic alcohols.

Promotional Effects of Cesium Promoter on Higher Alcohol Synthesis from Syngas over Cesium-Promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 Catalysts

Jie Sun,Qiuxia Cai,Yan Wan,Shaolong Wan,Li Wang,Jingdong Lin,Donghai Mei,Yong Wang

The promotional effects of a cesium promoter on higher alcohol (C2+OH) synthesis from syngas over Cs2O-Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts were investigated using a combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation method. In the presence of a cesium promoter, the C2+OH productivity increases from 77.1 to 157.3 g kgcat–1 h–1 at 583 K due to the enhancement of the initial C–C bond formation. A detailed analysis of chain growth probabilities (CGPs) confirms that initial C–C bond formation is the rate-determining step in the temperature range of 543–583 K. Addition of a cesium promoter significantly increases the productivities of 2-methyl-1-propanol, while the CGP values (C3* to 2-methyl-C3*) are almost unaffected. With the assistance of a cesium promoter, the CGPs of the initial C–C bond formation step (C1* to C2*) increase from 0.13 to 0.25 at 583 K. DFT calculations indicate that the initial C–C bond formation during syngas synthesis over the ZnCu(211) model surface is mainly due to the HCO + HCO coupling. In the presence of Cs2O, the stabilities of key intermediates such as HCO and H2CO are enhanced, which facilitates both HCO + HCO and HCO + H2CO coupling steps with lower activation barriers. In addition, Bader charge analysis suggests that the presence of cesium ions could facilitate nucleophilic coupling between HCO and H2CO for the initial C–C bond formation.

Simultaneous enhancement of elasticity and strength of Al2O3-based ceramics body from cellulose nanocrystals via gel-casting process

Tengfei Deng,Yanjuan Wang,Alain Dufresne,Ning Lin

A green gel-casting method was developed by the combination of rod-like cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and low toxicity monomer N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), which was proved to be a promising substitute of traditional neurotoxin monomer acrylamide (AM). The hydrophilic nature and homogeneous dispersion of CNC in aqueous suspension ensured the essential compatibility with the hydrosoluble polymerization system, and therefore provided remarkable mechanical enhancement of green body. The bending strength of the green body was highly increased by 68% with the introduction of 0.9 wt‰ CNC. Meanwhile, the fabricated green body exhibited significant improvement in flexibility and elasticity, with the unique bendable and recovery performances after drying treatment at room temperature for 1   h. The computer stimulation by the COMSOL Multiphysics confirmed the special mechanical enhancement effect induced by the presence of highly-crystalline and rigid CNC.

Preparation of highly dispersed W/ZrO2–Al2O3 hydrodesulfurization catalysts at high WO3 loading via a microwave hydrothermal method

Hao Wang,Zhenyu Yao,Xuchun Zhan,Yan Wu,Min Li

A microwave hydrothermal (MWH) method was used to deposit WO 3 onto ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 with various ZrO 2 contents to prepare hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with high WO 3 loading (23 wt%) close to industrial hydrotreating, for achieving high W dispersion and weak W-support interaction. The catalysts with the same WO 3 and ZrO 2 contents were prepared by a conventional impregnation (IM) method as reference. The effects of catalyst preparation methods and ZrO 2 contents on the catalyst property and dibenzothiophene HDS activity were investigated. The results show that the MWH method leads to highly dispersed octahedrally coordinated W species which are weakly linked on ZrO 2 –Al 2 O 3 and easy to be reduced; no bulk WO 3 crystallites are observed even at high ZrO 2 content (50 wt%). Therefore, it causes better sulfidation and shorter WS 2 slabs. Contrarily, the IM method induces W species to agglomerate into bulk WO 3 crystallites which are poorly dispersed and hard to be reduced, which is further aggravated by ZrO 2 . The HDS activity of the MWH-prepared catalysts significantly increases with ZrO 2 up to 40 wt% ZrO 2 . This catalyst shows 2 times higher rate constant and 1.64 times higher efficiency of HDS than the IM-prepared catalyst with the same ZrO 2 content. For the IM-prepared catalysts, the HDS activity slightly increases at small amount of ZrO 2 (10 wt%) and then decreases drastically.

Highly dispersed Ru immobilized on Ni-modified Al2O3 for selective hydrogenation of bisphenol A to hydrogenated bisphenol A

Shufeng Lin,Zhonghua Sun,Zhenzhen Wang,Qiumin Zhou,Anwei Wang,zhong wu,Junfeng Qian,Ming-Yang He,Qun Chen

Bisphenol A (BPA) is ubiquitous in industrial production and daily life. However, BPA is harmful to the health of fetuses and children due to its potential endocrine-disrupting effects. Hydrogenated bisphenol A (HBPA), an alicyclic diol generated from hydrogenating the double bonds of two benzene rings in the BPA molecule, is supposed to be a perfect substitute for BPA due to its stability and non-toxicity. Nevertheless, the rational design of high-performance catalysts for selectively converting BPA into HBPA remains a significant challenge. In this work, highly dispersed Ru immobilized by Al2O3 modified with Ni promoter (Ru/Ni-Al2O3) have been constructed, enabling BPA selective hydrogenation to produce HBPA under mild conditions. The doping of Ni promoter around Ru active sites effectively regulated the selectivity of target reaction. Both characterization and experimental results validated that the Ni promoter manipulated the electronic state of Ru through strong electron interaction between Ni and Ru, and thus the catalytic performance. In addition, the catalytic performance was also dependent on other reaction parameters such as H2 pressure, reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV), and hydrogen-oil volume ratio. The optimized Ru/0.1Ni-Al2O3 catalyst achieved a BPA conversion of 100% and an HBPA selectivity of 96.4% under optimal reaction conditions (6 MPa H2, 140 oC, 0.42 h-1 LHSV, and 1500:1 hydrogen-oil volume ratio).

High-Performance Al2O3/Polyarylate nanocomposite paper with enhanced Insulation, thermal Conductivity, and environmental stability for Advanced electrical applications

Liang Cheng,Hua Ma,Xueyang Liu,Qingquan Tang,Kuang Yang,Yuan Zhang,Hanwen Zhang,Hua Wang,Siwei Xiong

Polymer-based insulating paper is crucial for electrical equipment like transformers, high-power motors, and capacitors. However, as electronics evolve, current insulation papers fail to meet the demands for high insulation, thermal conductivity, and stability. This study introduces a novel nanocomposite paper with superior electrical strength, thermal conductivity, and weather resistance, made from self-produced polyarylate (PAR) nanofibers and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles. The high aspect ratio PAR nanofibers form a network that effectively captures Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles, and thermoplastic properties of PAR enable thermal welding at the interface, minimizing defects. Experimental results demonstrate that when Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles aggregate to a specific size and are fully encapsulated by PAR nanofibers (Al 2 O 3  = 30 wt%), the resulting Al 2 O 3 /PAR nanocomposite paper exhibits superior insulation and thermal conductivity characteristics. It achieves electrical breakdown strength and thermal conductivity of 115.4 kV/mm and 2.726 W/(m·K), improving by 356 % and 2599 % over commercial aramid paper. Additionally, following 24 h of exposure to elevated temperatures (200°C) and ultraviolet (UV) treatment, the breakdown strength of commercial aramid paper decreased to 10.3 kV/mm and 9.3 kV/mm, respectively. In contrast, the Al 2 O 3 /PAR nanocomposite paper-maintained breakdown strengths of 101.6 kV/mm and 94.7 kV/mm, underscoring its excellent resistance to environmental degradation.

Ion-Exchange Synthesis of Surrounded CoNi@Al2O3 Catalyst for Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation to γ-Valerolactone under Mild Conditions

Hongzhi Ding,Chenyu Yang,Congyan Jiang,Wei Luo,Qiuyue Wang,Xuefeng Guo

The use of eco-friendly biomass as a resource is an efficient way to address the problems of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. In biomass conversion, versatile γ-valerolactone (GVL) is generally obtained from levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation via a multimetallic catalyst system. Despite conversion efficiency being enhanced in mild conditions due to metal interactions, maintaining high catalyst stability is still a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a surrounded Co0.52Ni0.48@Al2O3-IE catalyst that exhibited excellent alloying and synergistic interaction between the metal constituents. Under relatively mild reaction conditions, the GVL yield over the catalyst exceeded 99% in LA hydrogenation. The catalyst showed no deactivation in a test of five cycles, displaying superiority in stability, possibly due to reasons of the physical isolation of the shell and the alumina retention on the Co-Ni alloys surface caused by the reversibility of exchange equilibrium. The present work demonstrated that a surrounded structured catalyst fabricated by ion exchange (IE) with active metals physically enclosed can lead to high catalytic activity and superior stability.

Improvement of the shear strength of SiC joint with CaO–Al2O3–MgO–SiO2 glass filler by surface etching

Sheng-Jin He,Jia-Pei Chen,Wei-Ming Guo,Xiu-Bing Chen,Huan Zhou,Chuang-Tian Zhan,Shi-Kuan Sun,Yun Li,Li-Xiang Wu,Jia-Xiang Xue,Hua-Tay Lin

In this study, CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass was utilized to join SiC after surface polishing and etching, without the application of pressure. To join polished SiC at 1250 °C using CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass proved unsuccessful. However, when polished SiC was joined at 1350 °C, the joint shear strength was 108.0 ± 15.5 MPa. Etching polished SiC with a NaOH–K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] solution effectively removed surface carbon, resulting in numerous micro-pits, that increased the joining area and improved the wettability of CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass. The joint strengths of etched SiC joined at 1250 °C and 1350 °C were 29.0 ± 11.6 MPa and 125.1 ± 19.6 MPa, respectively. After ablation at 1200 °C for 10 min, the retained strength of the etched joints (joined at 1350 °C) was 61.9 ± 4.0 MPa, whereas the strength of the polished joints decreased to only 36.6 ± 10.7 MPa. Surface etching demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance the strength and high-temperature resistance of SiC joints.

Liquid metal-encapsulated spherical Al2O3/PVA aerogel composites for high-efficiency electromagnetic interference shielding and enhanced mechanical properties

Yu Chen,Zhou Luo,Xinyu Shi,Yue Jiang,Yang Zhang,Zhiguang Xu

Liquid metal (LM) is a promising candidate for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to its exceptional electrical conductivity and ease of processing. However, the high surface tension of LM leads to poor compatibility with polymers, significantly hindering its application in EMI shielding. Here, Al 2 O 3 @LM/borax crosslinked PVA (Al 2 O 3 @LM/BCP) aerogel is prepared using mechanical grinding, melting crosslinking, and directional freeze-drying techniques. The core–shell structure of Al 2 O 3 @LM, prepared by mechanical grinding, effectively reduces the high surface tension of LM, enhancing compatibility with the PVA matrix. Due to its freeze-dried porous structure and superior LM conductivity, the Al 2 O 3 @LM/BCP composite aerogel exhibits outstanding electrical conductivity of 312.5 S/m, efficient electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of 80.9 dB, and an excellent SEA/SET ratio of 83.9 %. This work offers a straightforward strategy for developing EMI shielding aerogels with excellent mechanical properties for EMI protection applications.

Design of high-performance ozone catalysts by identifying and modulating anchoring sites for metal on γ-Al2O3 spheres

Tao Xu,Meihui Jiang,Xuhui Mao,Falak Sher,Tianlin Ren,Kun Xin,Irshad Hussain,Helin Hua,Xu Wang

This study investigated the important role of hydroxyl groups for the preparation of γ-Al 2 O 3 sphere supported metal catalysts. γ-Al 2 O 3 spheres were calcinated at varied temperatures for the analysis of surface hydroxyl group, and they were subsequently loaded with iron to evaluate the metal dispersion and the performance for catalytic ozonation. The results showed that the critical site for metal anchoring was hydroxyl group, thus a higher hydroxyl group content favored the metal dispersion on γ-Al 2 O 3 spheres; meanwhile, the iron-loaded catalysts prepared by the γ-Al 2 O 3 support calcinated at 300 °C achieved the highest catalytic efficiency for p -nitrophenol degradation (74.6 %). The favorable performance of the catalyst was attributed to the excellent dispersion of iron oxide particles, and the abundant oxygen vacancy sites that facilitated the formation of ozone-activating sites, Fe-centered hydroxyl groups ([Fe-OH]). This study provides an important theoretical guidance for the design and application of ozone catalysts.

Adsorptive Separation, Interfacial Configuration, and Mechanism of Dimethyl Carbonate–Methanol Azeotrope onto α-Al2O3: Experimental and Molecular Simulations

Xueni Sun,Qiang Fu,Lidong Li,Chunxiang Huang,Jun Wang,Hui Shao

Experiments and molecular simulations were combined to investigate the adsorption mechanism of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and methanol (MeOH) azeotrope onto α-Al2O3 while the differences and similarities between pure and azeotropic components were discussed. Static experimental results have shown that α-Al2O3 exhibited capacities in an unexpected order as azeotropic MeOH > pure DMC > pure MeOH > azeotropic DMC. MeOH-DMC and pure MeOH both fitted the PFO model with proximal kinetic constants, while the pure DMC exhibited a different behavior with a diffusion-controlled stage followed by chemisorption. The interfacial configuration as well as the mechanism at the molecular level was studied by molecular dynamics and density functional theory. Molecular simulation results indicate that a multilayer adsorption conformation is formed on the α-Al2O3 (0 0 1) surface for MeOH-DMC with most Al sites being occupied by MeOH followed by DMC constructing a bilayerlike structure with the preadsorbed MeOH molecules. Moreover, the adsorption of DMC can further reduce the dissociation of preadsorbed MeOH. This factor seems to promote the adsorption of more MeOH molecules on the α-Al2O3 (0 0 1) surface, leading to DMC aggregation outside the MeOH layer.
