Tailoring efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with dual-heterojunction is crucial for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, a multicomponent bifunctional catalyst with dual-heterojunction is rapidly constructed via sequential electrodeposition for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that bidirectional electron transfer at the interface induces a double built-in electric field (BIEF) in Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 , which offers additional impetus for electron transport and brings the d -band center closer to the Fermi level, thereby optimizing reaction kinetics and the adsorption of reaction intermediates. Active Pt and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly anchored on the stable Ni(OH) 2 nanoflocs, ensuring high exposure of active sites and preventing NPs aggregation. Meanwhile, Ni(OH) 2 , serving as abundant electron donor center, forms dual heterointerface with Pt and CeO 2 (Pt-Ni(OH) 2 and CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 ), which ensures structural stability during electrochemical processes. Benefiting from the dual-heterojunction and the unique structure design, Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance, requiring only 66 mV (10 mA cm −2 ) and 278 mV (100 mA cm −2 ) for HER and OER, respectively. Remarkably, the two-electrode electrolyzer based on Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 electrode requires only 1.49 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 with an excellent durability for OWS. This work brings light to the rational design and directional construction of bifunctional electrocatalyst hybrid nanomaterials with multiple heterojunctions.

Limited catalytic activity and inefficient ionic transport are major obstacles that compromise the overall performance of low-temperature fuel cells. To address this, we present a novel dual-regulation strategy that synergistically enhances electrolyte ion transport and electrode charge transfer. This approach achieves pre-reconstructed interfacial engineering through in situ phase reconstruction of the electrolyte during heat pretreatment, rather than through real-time interfacial evolution under operating conditions. By tuning the Ti:Ce ratio in the precursor composites, the Na 2 CO 3 -triggered reconstruction converted TiO 2 into oxygen vacancies Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 and formed Na 2 Ti 6 O 13 -CeO 2 (Nd) heterostructure electrolytes. Assembled with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 electrodes, the optimized Ti:Ce-6%(PS) fuel cell achieves a superior power density of 1011 mW cm −2 at 550 °C. Its excellent structural stability enables stable cell operation for over 45 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This study provides a synergistic and scalable material design strategy for high-efficiency fuel cells.

Rapid, synchronous, and quantitative detection of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and procalcitonin (PCT) is of great significance for the early diagnosis of infectious diseases, yet it remains a formidable challenge for conventional lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) due to their inherent semi-quantitative nature and limited sensitivity. Herein, we tackle this challenge through the rational design of dumbbell-shaped Au/end-CeO 2 heterojunctions, where the site-specific deposition of CeO 2 on gold nanorods creates a Schottky interface that profoundly modulates carrier dynamics. This unique architecture effectively suppresses electron-hole recombination and enhances localized electromagnetic fields, yielding an exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency of 58.22%—a 39.3% increase over pure Au nanorods. Capitalizing on this advanced nanomaterial, we engineer a colorimetric/photothermal dual-mode LFIA platform. This platform not only achieves ultrasensitive individual detection of IL-6 and PCT with detection limits as low as 44 and 52 pg·mL −1 , respectively, but also realizes their efficient synchronous co-detection in a single, rapid chromatography step. By integrating visual colorimetric screening with quantitative photothermal readout, this work establishes a material foundation and technical pathway toward highly sensitive, quantitative LFIA systems, providing a referential approach for rapid screening in settings where access to large-scale instrumentation is limited.

The selective hydrogenolysis of glucose into 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PG) constitutes a significant yet challenging transformation in biomass valorization, as it involves a highly coupled network of isomerization, C-C bond cleavage, and hydrogenation steps. Herein, a highly efficient Ni-CeO2catalyst supported by basic Al2O3is developed via a urea-assisted precipitation strategy. Systematic catalytic evaluation and comprehensive characterization reveal that this synthesis method markedly enhances Ni dispersion and hydrogen activation capacity, while CeO2modification modulates the electronic state of Ni and introduces strong Lewis basic sites associated with oxygen vacancies. The synergistic interplay between Ni and CeO2effectively promotes glucose isomerization and retro-aldol condensation while maintaining sufficient hydrogenation activity. As a result, the optimized catalyst achieves a 1,2-PG yield of 45.1% with over 99% glucose conversion under optimal hydrothermal reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits relatively stable catalytic performance over four consecutive runs. This work elucidates key structure–activity relationships in multifunctional Ni-based catalysts and provides design principles for efficient biomass-derived polyol production.

Room-temperature (RT) detection of NO 2 remains challenging because low-temperature operation often limits surface reactivity and charge-transport modulation. Here, a noble-metal-decorated hollow cage-like oxide is constructed by integrating a template-assisted route with hydrothermal processing, yielding a cauliflower-like architecture with a high specific surface area and abundant, accessible adsorption sites for NO 2 capture. Surface decoration further enriches oxygen vacancies and enhances the oxygen storage capacity, promoting oxygen activation and NO x surface chemistry under ambient conditions. Meanwhile, the formation of a Schottky barrier between Pd and CeO 2 enhances the conductivity and electron mobility of the composite. As a result, the chemiresistive sensor delivers a response of 32.84 toward 100 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, with a 3 s response and 15 s recovery, while maintaining good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. The device further achieves a 30 ppb detection limit, highlighting this hollow, vacancy-rich microcage platform as an effective strategy for low-power NO 2 monitoring. This work provides a generalizable interface and defect engineering strategy for next-generation RT NO 2 sensors.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) provides a sustainable route for nitrogen pollution remediation and ammonia production under ambient conditions. However, the process involves sluggish multi-electron/proton transfer and suffers from competing hydrogen evolution (HER) which severely limits efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we construct a Pd x -CeO 2 /C composite catalyst, in which strong interactions between Pd and CeO 2 induce interfacial electronic redistribution, thereby effectively modulating the Pd electronic structure. This interfacial coupling enhances water dissociation, accelerates the generation of reactive *H, and promotes its spillover from Pd to CeO 2 . In-situ attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) confirms that hydrogen spillovers facilitate stepwise hydrogenation of intermediates while suppressing HER. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that Pd-Ce interactions inhibit HER and enable N─O side-on adsorption, shifting the potential-determining step and lowering the reaction barrier, thus boosting electrocatalytic activity. As a result, the optimized 5 wt.% Pd-CeO 2 /C delivers a Faradaic efficiency of 98.0% for ammonia at −0.4 V (vs. RHE), and achieves an ammonia yield rate of 4.17 mmol/(mg Pd ∙h) at −0.6 V. This work offers new insights into the application of interfacial engineering for efficient electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media limits the efficiency of water electrolysis, particularly for layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Here, we construct a CeO 2 /NiFe LDH multilevel nanoflower heterostructure via interfacial engineering. The formation of the CeO 2 /NiFe LDH heterointerface induces electronic redistribution, while the CeO 2 nanoflower architecture anchors NiFe LDH nanosheets, increasing structural stability. As a result, CeO 2 -0.4/NiFe LDH delivers 100 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of only 259 mV, outperforming pristine NiFe LDH (289 mV), and maintains stable operation for over 100 h. Furthermore, it exhibits strong resistance to Cl – corrosion during seawater electrolysis and demonstrates high efficiency and durability in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) under industrially relevant conditions.

Excessive levels of phosphate (PO 4 3- ), molybdate (MoO 4 2- ), and tungstate (WO 4 2- ) in water bodies pose significant risks, not only triggering eutrophication and harming aquatic organisms, but also endangering human health. Conventional detection methods suffer from reliance on expensive instruments and complex sample pretreatment procedures, thus failing to meet the demands of on-site rapid monitoring. Employing a synergistic strategy of bimetallic co-doping and surface modification, L -carnosine modified Co/Mn-CeO 2 nanozymes were synthesized via an alkaline precipitation method. And the phosphatase-like activity of Co/Mn-CeO 2 was significantly superior to that of pure CeO 2 and single-metal-doped nanozymes. Dual-metal doping not only increased the oxygen vacancy content and Ce 4+ proportion in CeO 2 from 25.8% to 56.2% and from 49% to 61.2%, respectively, but also established a multivalent cycle, resulting in enhanced electron transfer. Capitalizing on the specific inhibition of Co/Mn-CeO 2 nanozyme's phosphatase-like activity by these three anions (PO 4 3- , MoO 4 2- , WO 4 2- ), a colorimetric detection platform was established. This platform enables the sensitive and highly selective detection of the three target ions. Spiked recovery rates in mimicked industrial wastewater reached 91.11% - 102.21%, and in natural river water samples ranged from 96.13% to 104.60%, demonstrating good accuracy in real environmental matrices. The strategy developed in this work provides a practical solution for modulating CeO 2 -based nanozymes, thereby enabling the on-site detection of multiple anions in water environments.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis offers a promising route for plastic waste upcycling. Herein, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies (O V ) in CeO 2 supports dramatically enhanced this process. Reduction-engineered Ru/CeO 2 -NH 3 -800 exhibits 40% higher activity at 800 °C than untreated counterparts. Comprehensive characterization revealed unchanged Ru metal sites after treatment, but significantly increased oxygen vacancy content in the CeO 2 support. Isotopic C 6 –D 2 temperature-programmed surface reaction studies revealed that higher O V concentrations correlate with lower C–H bond activation temperatures, directly aligning with observed activity trends. We propose a novel Ru–Ce interfacial mechanism: O V -adjacent Ce 3+ –O sites activate C–H bonds to form *RCCR* intermediates, while dual Ru sites cleave C–C bonds via C–Ru coordination. This work establishes an O V -driven structure-activity relationship for the first time and reveals support-mediated C–H activation as crucial for advanced catalyst design.

CeO2is widely studied in catalysis owing to its Ce4+/Ce3+redox couple and oxygen storage capacity (OSC), but its low-temperature redox activity remains a challenge. To address this, this study investigates the effects of saturated In3+doping (1 mol.%) on the structural, redox, and catalytic properties of nano-octahedral CeO2. Structural and chemical analyses reveal that In3+doping induces lattice contraction from 5.4171 to 5.4129 Å, increases oxygen vacancy concentration from 29.7% to 39.8%, and raises surface Ce3+fraction from 27.6% to 30.0%. Consequently, H2-TPR measurements show that the surface reduction peak temperature decreases from 548 to 406 °C and the onset reduction temperature shifts from 309 °C to 183 °C. Quantitative OSC analysis further demonstrates that the low-temperature OSC increases from 13.17 to 20.57 mmol O2/mol and the high-temperature OSC from 53.36 to 59.38 mmol O2/mol upon doping. As a result of these enhancements, CO-TPSR tests reveal improved low-temperature CO oxidation performance, with the CO2light-off temperature decreasing from 99 to 72 °C and the rapid oxidation temperature from 153 to 96 °C. Notably, H2O and H2signals are detected during CO-TPSR, and FTIR analysis confirms the enrichment of surface hydroxyl groups in the doped sample, offering new mechanistic insights into the involvement of surface species in the reaction pathway. Overall, saturated In3+doping effectively enhances the oxygen vacancy concentration, surface reducibility, and CO oxidation activity of nano-octahedral CeO2.

Vacancy defects and a heterojunction were co-introduced on ZnIn 2 S 4 through a one-step in-situ synthesis strategy. • The CeO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite material exhibits excellent activity in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction without the participation of Pt co-catalyst. • The revealed carrier transport dynamics in the CeO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure provide a blueprint for engineering high-performance heterojunction materials. Zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 ) is a promising photocatalyst whose performance is limited by inefficient charge separation. Herein, a one-pot strategy is proposed for the construction of CeO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunctions, with the alkaline environment concurrently inducing the generation of vacancy defects. The successful preparation of the CeO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructures was confirmed by a variety of characterization methods. Without employing a Pt cocatalyst, this heterojunction composite exhibits outstanding catalytic performance and long-term durability for photocatalytic H₂ production, which is mainly attributed to the plentiful active centers and improved charge carrier migration. DFT-based theoretical simulations further corroborated the charge transfer between CeO 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . These findings offer a new conceptual and material framework for constructing high-performance defect-enriched heterostructures. Achieving a simultaneous enhancement of material removal efficiency and surface quality remains a central challenge in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of silicon dioxide. Conventional CeO 2 abrasives, despite their high chemical activity, are prone to agglomeration and cause detrimental scratches. To address this, a core-shell structured poly(methyl methacrylate)@CeO 2 (PMMA@CeO 2 ) composite abrasive was rationally designed and synthesized, in which flexible PMMA microspheres serve as the core and epitaxially grown CeO 2 nanocrystals form the active shell. By precisely controlling the Ce precursor concentration from 2 to 20 mmol, the CeO 2 loading can be systematically tuned from approximately 15 wt% to a saturation level of ∼31.5 wt%, demonstrating a well-bounded and highly controllable synthesis. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the uniform core-shell morphology, high crystallinity, and a consistent high relative Ce 3+ whose absolute number increases with the tunable CeO 2 loading. The optimized abrasive achieves a material removal rate of 102 nm/min and an ultra-low surface roughness of 0.112 nm on SiO 2 film, approaching atomic-level smoothness. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the work function difference between CeO 2 (111) and SiO 2 (001) drives directional electron transfer from CeO 2 to SiO 2 . This electron redistribution strengthens the topmost Si-O bond via chemisorption while imposing tensile stress that elongates and weakens the sub-surface Si-O bonds, potentially promoting preferential cleavage under mechanical shear. This atomic-scale insight, combined with the mechanical buffering effect of the PMMA core, establishes a unique synergy in which the CeO 2 shell provides high chemical activity for efficient material removal and the PMMA core suppresses scratching to ensure atomically smooth, low-damage finishing. This work provides a rational design paradigm for core-shell abrasives and a fundamental theoretical basis for next-generation high-performance CMP materials.
