Fe3+ regulated synthesis of Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe): nanoarchitectonics and enhanced photo-Fenton activity

Wang Hui,Liu Jun,Chang Meng-Jie,Li Jia,Feng Qing,Jia Bo

The weak light absorption, low charge separation efficiency, and poor recyclability severely restrict the practical application of heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst MIL-100(Fe). Herein, we report the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) with tunable structures via hydrothermal growth, using Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and H 3 btc as precursors on an Ag/Fe 3 O 4 template. Notably, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O serves dual roles: it acts as a precursor for MIL-100(Fe) formation and as an oxidizing agent to remove the Ag template. The microstructure of the resulting catalyst can be precisely regulated by varying the Fe 3⁺ dosage. By optimizing the Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O dosage, the optimal hollow Fe 3 O 4 /MIL-100(Fe) catalyst is obtained, which exhibits excellent dispersion, a distinct core/shell structure, a larger specific surface area (312.6 m 2 /g), a smaller average pore diameter (4.9298 nm), strong magnetic separability, and superior photo-Fenton degradation performance (95.6% within 30 min). After 4 consecutive cycles, the degradation efficiency toward Rhodamine B (RhB) remains above 90%, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirms that both ·O 2 ⁻ and ·OH are the dominant reactive oxygen species responsible for the catalytic degradation reactions.

Preparation and Application of Fe-Cu/CA Electrode in Printing and Dyeing Wastewater Treatment

Deng Feng,Zhang Lu,He Yuqi,Wang Yun

Iron-copper/carbon aerogel (Fe–Cu/CA) electrodes were prepared via N₂ carbonization and CO₂ high-temperature activation. Structural characterization indicated that CO₂ activation significantly increased the cathode’s porosity and specific surface area, enhancing the exposure of catalytic active sites. The CO₂-activated Fe–Cu/CA electrodes were used as cathodes in an electro-Fenton (EF) system for treating chemical oxygen demand (COD) and adsorbable organic halide (AOX) in actual printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW). The results showed effective COD removal over a wide pH range (3–8); under optimal conditions (pH = 3, current density 7 mA/cm 2 , aeration rate 0.5 L/min), the COD and AOX removal rates reached 73.0% and 65.5% respectively after 60 min, with a maximum H₂O₂ concentration of 32 mg/L. Fe and Cu served as efficient Fenton catalysts to promote COD degradation. Additionally, the cathode exhibited good catalytic stability, with COD removal rate slightly decreasing from 73.0% to 69.1% after five reuse cycles. This material provides a feasible approach for actual PDW treatment by EF process.

P-Fe coupling behavior and mechanistic insights during selective Lithium extraction from spent LiFePO4

Xiaotian Zhang,Lu Xu,Yaohui Yang,Chao Li,Zelin Li,Chengqing Ji,Yaru Cui,Huamei Duan,Mujun Long,Dengfu Chen

In the recycling of spent lithium iron phosphate (SLFP), the purity of lithium carbonate, the primary lithium product, is severely constrained by the co-leaching of impurity elements, particularly phosphorus, which has long been overlooked in conventional selective leaching studies. In this study, a selective lithium extraction strategy was developed in the H 2 SO 4 -H 2 O 2 system by simultaneously targeting high Li recovery and suppression of Fe/P dissolution. Guided by E -pH diagrams and response surface methodology, the optimal leaching domain was identified, achieving 99.52% Li extraction while limiting Fe and P dissolution to 0.04% and 1.36%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Fe and P are not simply retained in the solid phase as traditionally assumed, but undergo a coupled dissolution-oxidation-reprecipitation process, ultimately forming FePO 4 ·xH 2 O. In contrast, Li leaching follows an interfacial chemical reaction-controlled mechanism ( E a  = 56.49 kJ mol −1 ). The decoupling of these pathways is the fundamental origin of high selectivity. Kilogram-scale experiments further confirmed the process stability and enabled the production of battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 with a purity of 99.74%. Furthermore, the migration of residual fluorine-containing species was evaluated, and corresponding strategies for safety management and emission control were proposed. This study reveals the previously overlooked leaching behavior of phosphorus during selective lithium extraction and clarifies the coupled immobilization mechanism of P Fe, providing a new theoretical basis and technical route for the high-selectivity and scalable recycling of spent LiFePO 4 .

Enhancing phosphate removal through defect and pore engineering in FeZr bimetallic Fe-HPUiO-66

Junxi Yan,Zhenyang Xu,Zhangtao Liu,Ning Xiao,Tingting Zhang

The microporous nature of MOF adsorbents has limited phosphate adsorption capacity due to their poor mass transfer and shielded active sites. Here, we report a Fe-doped Zr-MOF (Fe-HPUiO-66) with hierarchical porosity and abundant defects, synthesized via a combined strategy of Fe doping and selective pyrolysis of thermally labile ligands. The obtained adsorbents retain the UiO-66 topology while exhibiting a micro-to-mesoporous transition, which dramatically enhances phosphate diffusion kinetics and site accessibility. Fe-HPUiO-66 achieves a high adsorption capacity of 134 mg P/g, outperforming many reported adsorbents, along with excellent stability and reusability. Mechanism studies reveal that phosphate uptake is governed primarily by bidentate binuclear inner-sphere complexation with unsaturated Zr sites, supplemented by electrostatic attraction with protonated hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, oxygen vacancies serve as key active centers that enhance the adsorption affinity by inducing electron localization. This work demonstrates that synergistic engineering of metal nodes and pore architecture is an effective pathway to boost the overall performance of MOF adsorbents for water remediation.

Interfacial engineering-boosted oxygen electrocatalysts of Fe-Fe3N@NCNTs for rechargezable zinc-air batteries

Xin Meng,Songrui Wang,Shuaihao Tang,Bingwu Zhou,Yuehua Zhang,Zequan Wang,Hongyi Kang,Jiyuan Zhang,Shuangyu Jiang,Fanpeng Kong,Bing Li,Jue Gong,Xingang Zhao,Jiajun Wang,Haiping Xu

Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs exhibits half-wave potential at 0.92 V. • Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs shows a shift of only 15 mV after 30k cycles. • DFT and in-stiu Raman confirm Fe-Fe 3 N tunes adsorption energy to enhance ORR activity. • Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs-assembled ZABs have excellent potential for applications. : Interface engineering is regarded as a pivotal technique for overcoming the activity-stability trade-off in Fe-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Herein, a bifunctional catalyst of Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs heterostructure is synthesized through a simple one-step calcination method. The catalyst exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.92 V vs RHE for ORR with only 15 mV decay over 30k cycles and overpotential of 310 mV for OER. In-situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) reveal that the electronic modulation of Fe-Fe 3 N hetero-interface activates Fe-N and C-N dual sites synergistically and achieves optimal intermediate adsorption strength, significantly lowering energy barrier of rate determine step. The assembled zinc–air batteries (ZABs) with Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs exhibit a high power density of 252.5 mW cm -2 and remarkable durability of 2400 h, while the corresponding flexible solid-state ZABs deliver excellent rate capability and robust stability over 1000 cycles. This work provides new insights into the design of advanced heterostructure electrocatalysts for practical energy storage applications. The prepared Fe-Fe 3 N@NCNTs composite catalyst leverages the synergistic effect between Fe and Fe 3 N, which optimizes both the structure and electron density. The unique structure significantly enhances the ORR/OER activity, enabling zinc–air batteries to achieve high power density, high specific capacity, and exceptional cycle life, demonstrating substantial promise for energy conversion and storage applications. Descriptor-guided Fe/V co-doped hollow MoO2 nanostructures for photo-assisted water splitting

Zi-Ang Lu,Shan Jin,Tingting Qu,Ranran Liang,Yunchen Du,Mengxin Chen,Ping Xu

Conductive oxides with chemically distinct local environments are attractive for bifunctional water splitting because hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impose different requirements on adsorption and charge transfer. Here, a descriptor-informed Fe/V co-doping strategy is proposed to regulate MoO 2 for photo-assisted electrocatalysis. Density functional theory (DFT) screening based on incorporation thermodynamics, local M–O bond mismatch, and near-Fermi-level electronic states identifies V as the most favorable dopant for lattice incorporation and Fe as the dopant that minimizes local bond-length mismatch while strongly perturbing the electronic structure. Guided by this complementarity, Mo 0.9 Fe 0.05 V 0.05 O 2 was synthesized and compared with pristine MoO 2 and single-doped controls. The co-doped catalyst preserves the MoO 2 framework and delivers the best overall performance, requiring 166 and 243 mV for HER and 253 and 281 mV for OER to reach 10 and 50 mA cm −2 under illumination. Electrochemical measurements reveal improved charge-transfer behavior and enhanced light-induced current response. Optical characterization and Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations indicate that the hollow architecture promotes optical-field localization, while DFT reaction energetics suggest site-dependent catalytic preferences, with V-associated environments favoring hydrogen adsorption and Fe-associated environments facilitating OER intermediate conversion. This study demonstrates that pairing dopants according to lattice compatibility and electronic perturbation is an effective route to activate MoO 2 for photo-assisted bifunctional water splitting. A descriptor-guided Fe/V co-doping strategy activates hollow MoO 2 for photo-assisted water splitting. Fe/V co-doping enables complementary HER/OER active sites, while the hollow architecture promotes optical-field localization and enhances interfacial charge-transfer kinetics under illumination. Trimetallic spinel Fe-Co3O4/NiCo2O4 nanoboxes as efficient cathode electrocatalyst for lithium-oxygen batteries

Xueqin Wang,Shuaiyu Gao,Yuelin Zhao,Wenqi Wu,Hongyun Lai,Huifeng Li,Genban Sun

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries stand out as ideal candidates for next-generation energy storage due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions at the cathode pose a major challenge, necessitating the development of efficient catalysts to overcome practical limitations. Herein, Fe-doped Co 3 O 4 /NiCo 2 O 4 heterostructures are synthesized as cathode catalysts via chemical etching, cation exchange, and thermal oxidation. The etching process creates a stable hollow nanocube structure that maximizes active site exposure while providing ample space for Li 2 O 2 storage and ion diffusion. A strongly interactive heterojunction forms at the Co 3 O 4 /NiCo 2 O 4 interface, with Fe doping further enhancing interfacial electron interaction to boost catalytic activity. When used in Li-O 2 batteries, this catalyst enables a remarkable discharge capacity of 9572 mAh g −1 , a low overpotential of 1.01 V, and stable cycling over 110 cycles, providing a new strategy for developing high-performance Li-O 2 battery cathodes.

The effect of geometric configuration on fullerene and Fe tandem catalyst for ammonia synthesis

Ruishao Mao,Mengqi An,Xuanbei Peng,Tianhua Zhang,Ming Chen,Lei Zhang,Kailin Su,Yanliang Zhou,Jun Ni,Lirong Zheng,Xiuyun Wang,Lilong Jiang

The development of efficient catalysts enabling the Haber–Bosch ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis process under mild conditions is crucial. However, the competitive activation of co-adsorbates, that is, excessive N 2 or H 2 binding at a single active site, is detrimental to NH 3 synthesis. Herein, we demonstrate that Fe 2 O 3 mediated by fullerenes (C 60 /C 70 ) with varying geometric configurations could facilitate efficient NH 3 synthesis under mild conditions (≤400°C, ≤2 MPa). Our studies indicate that C 70 exhibits a higher curvature than C 60 , which enhances electron transfer through Fe–O–C bridges. This curvature-driven electronic modulation, combined with the spatially separated activation of N 2 (primarily on Fe sites) and H 2 (mainly on C 60 /C 70 ), synergistically enhances the dissociation of N 2 and the desorption of NH 3 . As a consequence, the developed C 70 -Fe 2 O 3 achieves an NH 3 synthesis rate of 19.10 mmol g −1 h −1 . This finding demonstrates a strategy for optimizing dual-functionality sites through selecting fullerenes with different geometric structures.

Nanostructured iron(III) oxide catalyst electrodeposited from Fe(II) triflate for electrocatalytic water oxidation

Qiang Zhao,Dandan Li,Guofeng Gao,Wen Yuan,Genyan Hao,Jinping Li

We describe a novel nanostructured iron oxide catalyst film electrodeposited from iron(II) triflate under mild conditions (room temperature, atmospheric pressure, and near-neutral solution) that can catalyze water oxidation in potassium carbonate solution. The structure, morphology, composition, and catalytic activity of the catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The results indicate that nanostructured iron oxide is an active electrocatalyst for water oxidation at higher catalytic current and low overpotential.

A(NH3)xFePS3 (A = Li, K): intercalated Fe thiophosphate via the liquid ammonia method

Xiaojing Feng,Zhongnan Guo,Xiaoxiao Yan,Jun Deng,Dan Wu,Zijing Zhang,Fan Sun,Wenxia Yuan

Metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3) are of great interest since these layered materials exhibit wide applications in optical, electrical and magnetic fields. An effective chemical intercalation route for MPX3 which could regulate their physical properties, however, is still lacking. In this work, we show that the liquid ammonia method is an efficient route to co-intercalate alkali metals and NH3 molecules into the gaps in FePS3. After intercalation, the interlayer distance is significantly enlarged by ∼3 Å while the monoclinic lattice (C2/m space group) is still maintained. The structure refinement and EDS measurement suggest that intercalation does not induce any Fe vacancy, thus leading to electron transfer from the alkali metal to [FePS3] layers. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibility shows that the intrinsic anti-ferromagnetic transition in the FePS3 matrix is completely suppressed by this intercalation, whereas a spin-glass state is observed in A(NH3)xFePS3 (A = Li, K) in the lower temperature range (<50 K). The intercalation described in this work is reversible: the alkali metal can be easily de-intercalated using a two-step route and the anti-ferromagnetism reappears accordingly. Meanwhile, the liquid ammonia method is also shown to be efficient at intercalating other MPS3 materials (M = Mn, Co, Ni). Our work not only enriches the intercalation chemistry in the MPX3 system but also provides an excellent route to regulate the magnetic properties of these layered materials.

Synthesis, structure and physical properties of layered quaternary sulfides NaLiMS2 (M = Mn, Fe, Co)

Yurong Ren,Xiaofang Lai,Minhao Guo,Ruiqi Wang,Jun Deng,Jikang Jian

Three layered quaternary sulfides, NaLi M S 2 ( M  = Mn, Fe, Co) were synthesized by solid-state reactions. They adopt a trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structure (S.G. P -3 m 1) with Li and M randomly distributed at the tetrahedral metal site. Magnetic measurements reveal spin-glass ground states for these compounds, in contrast to the long-range antiferromagnetic order in the ternary counterpart NaFe 1.6 S 2 . As evidenced by electrical resistivity and optical measurements , all these three compounds show semiconducting nature, consistent with the results of first-principles calculations. The measured band gaps are 3.4 eV and 1.25 eV for NaLiMnS 2 and NaLiCoS 2 , respectively. Photoelectric measurements on NaLiCoS 2 demonstrate its potential application in photovoltaic devices .

Study of stabilization mechanism—PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe³⁺ membrane achieving efficient volatile oil separation

Wenling Fan,Xiao Xu,Lingling Li,Long Sun,Chang Gao,Le Luo,Jingjing Zhang,Ziqi Sun,Ying Xu,Yutong Gao

This study elucidates the stabilization mechanism underpinning the efficient and long-term separation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) volatile oils from oil-in-water emulsions by polyvinylidene fluoride/phytic acid-polyethyleneimine/Fe3 + (PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe3 + ) membranes. Through integrated molecular docking and Schneider's thermodynamic analysis, we demonstrate that the exceptional stability arises from a dual-crosslinked architecture: (1) High-affinity coordination bonds between phytic acid (PA) and Fe³⁺ (binding energy: −5.2 kcal/mol; ΔH m = 1.05 × 10⁻³ cal/mol) establish a robust framework resistant to chemical and thermal degradation, while (2) Fe³⁺-mediated interfacial bridging—achieved through lone-pair electron sharing with fluorine atoms in PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) and electrostatic interactions with polyethyleneimine (PEI)—synergistically suppresses delamination. Experimental validation demonstrates exceptional durability: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirm retention of Fe³⁺-phosphate coordination bonds and pore structural integrity following 24-h exposures to pH extremes (3–11), 100% ethanol, 95°C thermal treatment, and 0.25 MPa pressure. The membrane sustains >95% oil retention capacity and stable steady-state permeate flux (≈2750 L·m –2 ·h –1 (LMH), 2750 LMH·bar –1 ) throughout the 60-day cyclic operation (8h of filtration per day, with the membrane immersed in the turmeric oil-in-water emulsion during off-operation hours and characterized every 7 days). The high flux is attributed to the synergistic effect of the large-pore PVDF substrate (Molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 200,000 Da) and the superhydrophilic PA-PEI/Fe 3+ coating, Tests were conducted on 4 cm-radius membraneswith an effective filtration area of 0.005024 m² under the conditions of Transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 0.1 MPa and 25±1°C.With corrosion resistance demonstrated by negligible flux variation (flux recovery ratio, (FRR) <100%) when treating aggressive turmeric oil emulsions. This study establishes a dual-anchoring strategy that effectively mitigates volatility-induced membrane corrosion, thereby positioning PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe³⁺ membranes as an industrially viable platform for sustainable extraction of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) volatile components.
