Graphical His and HER : Nitrogen doped Cu 2 S/MoS 2 heterojunction nanorod arrays grafted on copper foam in situ have been created for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction. The results showed the remarkably improved catalytic activity by designing and tuning the heterostructure, conductivity and active sites. The fabrication of non-noble element electrocatalysts with comparable catalytic activity with Pt-based materials is in great requirements for water splitting to achieve sustainable hydrogen production. Cu 2 S/MoS 2 heterojunction nanorod arrays on copper foam were prepared for this purpose. The nitrogen doping was achieved in situ. HRTEM, SEM, XPS and EDX verified the heterojunction interfacial texture and the defect-rich nanoarray configuration. The heterojunction interfacial texture, the defect rich configuration and the outward active sites optimized the structure required as a high-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst. As a result, the charge transfer resistance of the nanoarrays was estimated to be 5.4 Ω at −200 mV versus RHE, even lower than both the precursors. The electrochemical double layer capacitance was 49.95 mF cm −2 , which was higher than both the precursors. The Cu 2 S/MoS 2 heterojunction nanoarrays-like electrocatalyst exhibited significant performance with a low overpotential (91 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and a small Tafel slope (41 mV dec −1 ) in alkaline electrolyte with 85.3 % retained ability after 1000 cycle runs. This work paves a road for developing high-performance HER electrocatalysts.

Graphical Photo finish : A catalyst made of MoS 2 nanosheets loaded on Cu-doped CdS nanorods is synthesized through a facile two-step solvothermal approach. The working electrode is formed by loading a certain amount of catalyst on fluorine tin oxide. A significant increase in the photoelectrochemical performance is observed, owing to the synergistic effect between CdS and MoS 2 and fast interfacial charge transfer from the Cu 2+ doping. Transition-metal ion doping and efficient decoration by using a co-catalyst have been proven to effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and broaden the visible-light response region. Here, we have constructed MoS 2 nanosheets decorated on a copper-doped CdS nanorod composite as a noble-metal-free photoelectrocatalyst. This kind of composite material was constructed through a simple solvothermal method. The morphology, structure, chemical states, photoelectrochemical properties, and other properties were tested by using a diverse range of analytical techniques. Owing to the Cu 2+ doping and the excellent electron-capturing ability of MoS 2 , 5 % MoS 2 /Cu−CdS (with 7 % Cu 2+ doping in CdS) exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction with a rate of 10.18 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is about 48 times higher than that of pure CdS. A significant increase in the photoelectrochemical performance of the composite catalytic material benefits from the synergistic effect between CdS and MoS 2 and fast interfacial charge transfer, owing to the Cu 2+ doping. These findings provide a new thought for further research of the ion doping in photoelectrocatalytic field.

The incorporation of dopant atoms alters the structure of MoS 2 , resulting in unique properties and practical applications. Herein, a facile and low-cost approach for producing N-doped molybdenum disulfide (N-MoS 2 ) was carried out using melamine and MoS 2 in a laboratory tube furnace at 400 ∘ C for 2 h. The N-MoS 2 fluorescent probe showed sensitive response to Hg 2 + in a wide concentration range of 0.4–10 μ M with a low limit of 28 nM. The practical applicability of detecting Hg 2 + in lake water samples may open a new way to evaluate Hg 2 + in wastewater.

Polyethersulfone (PES) has been widely used as an ultrafiltration (UF) or nanofiltration (NF) membrane material in multiple industrial fields. But PES is hydrophobic in nature and easily contaminated. Thus, it is necessary to modify the PES membrane surface by physical or chemical methods for improving its hydrophilicity and other function. Herein, MoS 2 modified by zwitterionic 2-methacryloyloxy ethyl dimethyl (3-sulfopropyl)-ammonium hydroxide sulfobetaine methacrylate (MoS 2 -PSBMA) was synthesized with a reverse atom transfer radical polymerization method (RATRP) and used to prepare MoS 2 -PSBMA/PES composite membranes via conventional phase inversion. The effect of MoS 2 -PSBMA content on the structure and properties was investigated by SEM, FT-IR, AFM and contact angle measurements. It was found that the hydrophilicity of the composite membrane increased with the content of zwitterionic functionalized MoS 2 nanosheets. Moreover, the composite membranes possessed a higher water flux (108.3 L m −2 h −1 at 0.6 MPa) and dye retention, 98.2% for Reactive Black 5% and 99.3% for Reactive Green 19. However, the rejection of Na 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 NaCl and MgSO 4 was low, i.e., 2.2%, 1.2%, 1.1% and 0.3%, respectively. In summary, the synthesized composite membrane exhibited high selectivity for dye/inorganic salts and had a large potential for dye waste water treatment.

In this work, we report a three-dimensional (3D) MoS 2 /rGO foam based sulfur cathode with improved electrochemical performance for lithium-sulfur batteries. The porous MoS 2 /rGO foam is prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. Few-layered MoS 2 nanosheets with mixed 1T and 2H phases are developed in situ on the basal plane of the reduced graphene oxide (rGO), forming a continuous 3D porous network. It is found that the porous MoS 2 /rGO foam shows synergistic effects of high conductivity, large surface area, strong polysulfide chemisorption and high catalytic activity, consequently resulting in enhanced rate performance and cycling capability of lithium-sulfur batteries. The cells constructed with the MoS 2 /rGO/S cathodes exhibit a high reversible capacity of 1100 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C, an outstanding cycling stability with a low capacity fading rate of 0.15% after 300 cycles at 1 C, and an excellent rate performance up to 620 mA h g −1 at 2 C. Our work reveals that the porous MoS 2 /rGO foam based sulfur cathodes are potential for future high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.

To suppress shuttling effect and improve electrochemical performance of the sulfur cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries, core-shell structured MoS 2 @S spherical cathode has been synthesized through a chemical route using MnCO 3 as template. The MoS 2 shells consist of MoS 2 nanosheets . For comparison, MoS 2 /S cathode has also been synthesized through melting and diffusion of sulfur to commercial MoS 2 powders. The electrochemical performance of the MoS 2 @S and MoS 2 /S cathodes have been evaluated using cyclic voltammetry , discharge/charge cycling, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy coupled with impedance fitting. The electrochemical performance of the MoS 2 @S spherical cathode has been much improved compared with that of MoS 2 /S. The capacity of the MoS 2 @S spheres can reach 1185.7 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C and 955.1 mA h g −1 at 1 C with initial-cycle coulombic efficiency of 90%. The capacity fading of each cycle is 0.1% during 200 lithiation/delithiation cycles. The MoS 2 @S spherical cathode with high cyclic capacity and stability is promising cathode candidate for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Cost-effective materials for electrocatalytic water splitting are key to renewable energy research. In this work, MoS 2 /sulfur and nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide (SNG) nanocomposite was produced via a two-step hydrothermal process. The formation of nanocomposite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that the MoS 2 /SNG nanocomposite exhibits much higher catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) relative to MoS 2 and MoS 2 /RGO catalysts, as manifested by much larger cathodic current density with smaller overpotential of −120 mV and lower Tafel slope of 45 mV dec −1 . It is believed that the outstanding performance is attributed to the high electronic conductivity of SNG for fast charge transport. This study highlights the significance of the strong electronic coupling effect between the MoS 2 and SNG in the enhancement of HER electrocatalytic activity .

Graphical Pass the Mo : A 3 D sandwich of mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT was fabricated using a facile mechanochemistry method combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach. The material exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution owing to the sandwich-like heterojunction structure and Ti 3+ doping. A novel 3 D mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT sandwich-like nanosheet was successfully fabricated using a facile mechanochemical process combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach, followed by mild calcination (350 °C) under an argon atmosphere. The MBT/MoS 2 /MBT exhibits a 3 D sandwich-like nanosheet structure and heterojunctions are formed at the interfaces between MoS 2 and black TiO 2 . The significantly narrowed band gap of MBT/MoS 2 /MBT is attributed to the introduction of MoS 2 and the formed Ti 3+ species in the frameworks. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation rate of methyl orange and the hydrogen production rate are as high as 89.86 % and 0.56 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. The introduction of MoS 2 and Ti 3+ in the frameworks favors the visible-light absorption and the separation of photogenerated charges, and the 3 D sandwich-like heterojunction structure facilitates the transfer of photogenerated charges.

Combining photothermal therapy (PTT) with clinical technology to kill cancer via overcoming the low tumor targeting and poor therapy efficiency has great potential in basic and clinical researches. A brand-new MoS 2 nanostructure is designed and fabricated, i.e., layered MoS 2 hollow spheres (LMHSs) with strong absorption in near-infrared region (NIR) and high photothermal conversion efficiency via a simple and fast chemical aerosol flow method. Owing to curving layered hollow spherical structure, the as-prepared LMHSs exhibit unique electronic properties comparing with MoS 2 nanosheets. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate their high photothermal ablation of cell and tumor elimination rate by single NIR light irradiation. Systematic acute toxicity study indicates that these LMHSs have negligible toxic effects to normal tissues and blood. Remarkably, minimally invasive interventional techniques are introduced to improve tumor targeting of PTT agents for the first time. To explore PTT efficiency on orthotopic transplantation tumors, New Zealand white rabbits with VX 2 tumor in liver are used as animal models. The effective elimination of tumors is successfully realized by PTT under the guidance of digital subtraction angiography, computed tomography, and thermal imaging, which provides a new way for tumor-targeting delivery and cancer theranostic application.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) has been an attractive target for investigations in the fields of catalysis, sensing, energy storage, electronics, and optoelectronics. However, its potential application in the important area of environmental cleanup has not yet been effectively explored. With an intrinsically sulfur-rich characteristic and unique 2D structure, MoS 2 should be capable of mercury capture and removal. However, successful attempts to apply MoS 2 to mercury removal are quite rare, presumably because the vast majority of sulfur atoms are located inside the bulk of MoS 2 and are therefore inaccessible for mercury ions. Here, the first experimental evidence that MoS 2 nanosheets with widened interlayer spacing are capable of mercury capture, with an extremely high mercury uptake capacity closely matching the theoretically predicted value (2506 mg g −1 ) and the largest distribution coefficient value (3.53 × 10 8 mL g −1 ) is provided. Remarkably, a single treatment of industrial wastewater (polyvinyl chloride industry) with this modified MoS 2 could efficiently reduce the mercury concentration (126 p.p.b.) below U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits for drinking water standards. The findings open up the possibility of expanding the applications of transition metal dichalcogenides in environmental remediation.

A novel (CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe)-sensitized TiO 2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) photoelectrode has been prepared by electrodeposite, successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) coupled with hydrothermal method . When a ZnS layer was added on the top of CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 , a notable red-shift and high absorption was observed in the visible light region. The photocurrent density (mA/cm 2 ) systematically increases from TiO 2 NTAs (0.43), CdTe/TiO 2 (1.09), MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (1.80), CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (2.40), to ZnS/CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (3.41) under visible light irradiation, due to the type-II semiconductor heterostructures comprising multiple components with a staggered band offset. Such a heterostructure possesses an enhanced photocatalytic performance towards degradation of organic contaminant, e.g. P-Nitrophenol (PNP) and Rhodamine B (RhB) .

A CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode with a double-layer core–shell structure was prepared using a simple electrodeposition–in situ sulfurization method on a Mo substrate. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared electrodes was evaluated using a photoelectrochemical H2-generation experiment. The photocurrent and photon–electron conversion efficiency of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode were nearly double those of a CdS photoanode prepared on FTO glass. The high activity of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode was due to the higher separation efficiency of carriers caused by the formed CdS–MoS2 Janus heterojunction structure, which made directional transmission and electron–hole separation possible. Our experiments show that, in addition to being a good co-catalyst in powder material for photocatalytic hydrogen production, MoS2 can also be used as an electron acceptor layer to enhance electron–hole separation.
