Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FCS) from Holothuria mexicana (FCS Hm ) was selected for investigation because of its intriguing branch features. Selective β-eliminative depolymerization and the bottom-up assembly were performed to unravel that FCS Hm consisted of a {D-GlcA-β1,3-D-GalNAc 4S6S } backbone and branches of alternating Fuc S (55 %) and D-GalNAc S -α1,2-L-Fuc S (45 %), the highest proportion of disaccharide branch reported to date. In branches, sulfation could occur at every free -OH site except O-3 of GalNAc, being the most complex and various structure features of natural FCS. Detailed structure-activity relationship analyses showed that FCS Hm and its depolymerized products (>8 kDa) effectively competed with SLe X and PSGL-1 to bind with P-sel at nano-molar level and the inhibition potency increased with Mw increasing. For the structural trisaccharide unit, di-O-sulfation of the Fuc S (Fuc 2S4S and Fuc 3S4S ) was almost 10-fold more potent than mono-O-sulfation (Fuc 4S ). Unexpectedly, higher sulfation of the disaccharide-branched tetrasaccharide unit reduced inhibition. The reversal may attribute to fewer interactions with P-sel by molecular docking study. These results suggested that the specific configuration underpinned the potent inhibition, whereas the size and sulfate number of branches were not the key factors for the specific binding. d Hm F4 (8.0 kDa) potently blocked the platelet-leukocyte aggregates formation, further verifying the potential value in use.

Low-grade heat is abundant and ubiquitous, but it is generally discarded due to the lack of cost-effective recovery technologies. Ion thermoelectric cells are an affordable and straightforward approach of converting low-grade heat into usable electricity for sustainable power. Despite their potential, ion thermoelectric cells face challenges such as limited Seebeck coefficient and required series integration. Here, we demonstrate that the N-type and P-type conversion of ion thermoelectric cells can be achieved through the phase transition of temperature-sensitive hydrogel containing the triiodide/iodide redox couple. Through the strong interaction between the hydrophobic region of the hydrogel and triiodide, the hydrophobic side selectively captures triiodide and the hydrophilic side repels triiodide, raising the concentration difference of triiodide and thereby increasing the Seebeck coefficient. Specifically, the Seebeck coefficient of the N-type ion thermoelectric cells is 7.7 mV K −1 , and the Seebeck coefficient of P-type ion thermoelectric cells is −6.3 mV K −1 (Δ T = 15 K). By connecting 10 pairs of the N-type and P-type ion thermoelectric cells, we achieve a voltage of 1.8 V and an output power of 85 μW, surpassing the reported triiodide/iodide-based ion thermoelectric cells. Our work proposes a phase transition strategy for the N-P conversion of ion thermoelectric cells, and highlights the prospect of series integrated hydrogel ion thermoelectric cells for low-grade heat harvesting.

Comprehensive Summary Photocatalytic aerobic oxidative desulfurization (PAODS) is a sustainable alternative technology to traditional, energy-intensive fuel desulfurization methods. Nonetheless, its advancement is hindered by the notable challenge of inadequate electron-hole separation efficiency within the existing catalytic systems. Herein, a Janus 2D/2D heterostructure composed of Co 3 O 4 and CoMoO 4 is reported for the PAODS of thiophenic sulfides. Through a combination of detailed experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we elucidate the formation of a type II p-n heterojunction in the catalyst, significantly enhancing electron-hole separation through electric field force and reducing the possibility of electron-hole recombination due to the spatial separation of redox centres. The photocatalyst exhibits exceptional activity and demonstrates an impressive performance of 10.4 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 in the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Moreover, the photocatalyst demonstrates profound desulfurization capabilities in real diesel, reinforcing its promising prospects for industrial application. These discoveries provide invaluable insights, both scientifically and practically, towards the development of advanced photocatalysts for PAODS processes.

As a typical toxic substance in environmental water, phenolic pollutants, represented by p -nitrophenol, pose a great threat to the ecological environment. In this study, using WCl 6 and oxalic acid as raw materials, a novel p -nitrophenol (PNP) sensor fabricated by tungsten phosphide (WP) nano-particles, has been successfully designed and constructed, which expanded the application of WP nano-materials in the field of electroanalysis. The successful synthesis of WP has been confirmed by a series of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical experiments were all carried out in phosphate buffer solution with the pH of 6.5. The WP nano-particles can electrocatalytically oxidize PNP to produce a current for the detection of PNP. The reaction sites of PNP are predicted by Gaussian 09 and Multiwfn. Prominent performance has been recorded for PNP sensor, attaining a wide linear range from 10.00 to 6500.00 μM, a low detection limit of 1.59 μM with the reliable selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Gratifyingly, the prepared sensor could satisfy the requirements of PNP determination in actual environmental water, such as tap water and rainwater.

Transition metals (TMs) are widely employed to improve poor intrinsic activity of biochar for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation towards water purification. However, the mechanistic effects of TMs on carbon substrates requires further understanding. Herein, we constructed TM-modified C-Ni and C-Ni-Co catalysts via simple pyrolysis of rice husk precursor, optimizing carbonaceous morphologic and electronic structures. The Co-Ni-Co (0.013 min −1 ) exhibited over 10 times higher performance than pristine biochar for iohexol (IOH) removal. Systemic spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements indicate that embedded Ni increases graphitization degree facilitating IOH adsorption by π-π conjugated attraction. And, the anchored Co enhances work function promoting electron extraction for selective generation of 1 O 2 . The interfacial d-p orbital hybridization increases the acidic degree on biochar for PMS adsorption, accelerating electron exchange for PMS activation. Our work attempts to study the complex interaction between carbon and metal sites by orbital hybridization to design efficient PMS activators for Fenton-like decontamination.

In the present work, self-adhesive and self-healing drug loaded poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate-acrylamide)/gelatin hydrogels with dual networks were synthesized by a facile one-pot method via crosslinking with dynamic hydrogen bonds and metal–ligand interactions. The prepared hydrogels displayed excellent cyclic adhesion performance on various surfaces due to the presence of Fe3+ ions and tannic acid (TA). Notably, due to the uniform compact pore size distribution, the prepared P(HEMA-AM)/Gel0.9 hydrogel possessed enhanced physicochemical properties, with a tensile strength of 305 kPa and an elongation at break of 589% in tensile experiments, and a compressive strength of 1.11 MPa under 70% strain. At the same time, the self-healing efficiency of the P(HEMA-AM)/Gel0.9 hydrogel can reach 95% after 24 h of repair. Furthermore, drug release experiments showed that the hydrogels had pH-responsive and sustained drug release properties, and the addition of gelatin in the composite hydrogel would accelerate drug release. Therefore, the P(HEMA-AM)/Gel hydrogel fabricated with a convenient and simple method possesses great potential for use in drug delivery systems.

It's a dream to make zeolites more stable so as to keep the activity and stability of the catalyst. Phosphorus modification is an effective method, however, the known post-modification predominantly presents as non-framework P, and the P-loss is a big trouble in application. We have discovered that in the reaction of PCl 3 or SiCl 4 + PCl 3 with NaY zeolite, a portion of P enters the framework of the zeolite, forming a PO 4 -AlO 4 structure. Further investigations revealed that P cannot be incorporated into the framework through P for Al isomorphous substitution, but rather through isomorphous substitution with Si(4Al). PCl 3 exhibits two effects in reaction: at lower quantities, it mainly undergoes isomorphous substitution with Si(4Al); at higher quantities, it leads to zeolite dealumination generating aluminum vacancies, which disrupt the zeolite framework or promotes Si for Al isomorphous substitution. After hydrothermal aging at 800 °C for 4 h, the stable presence of framework PO 4 -AlO 4 implies that the weakest site Si(4Al) becomes the more stable site P(4Al) in the Y zeolite framework. Compared with the JPY (prepared by impregnating (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 solution to high silica Y zeolite) sample, after 10 cycles of hydrothermal and water washing treatment, the P 2 O 5 loss rate of DPY (prepared by SiCl 4 + PCl 3 with NaY) zeolite ranged from 0.4 % to 3.5 %, significantly lower compared to the range of 18.7 % to 25.9 % observed in the JPY sample. This indicates that in DPY zeolite, the interaction between P and the zeolite is stronger and less prone to loss. Moreover, P is more uniformly distributed on the surface and bulk phase of DPY than JPY sample.

Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries have emerged as a promising next-generation energy storage system due to their high theoretical capacity, low cost, and intrinsic safety. However, their practical deployment is hindered by zinc dendrite formation and the polyiodide shuttle effect, which compromise cycling stability and efficiency. Herein, we introduce a commercially available graphene oxide-based electrolyte additive that leverages interfacial carbon sites to form multifunctional p -π conjugated orbitals, effectively enhancing battery performance. The graphene oxide-modified cells demonstrate excellent cycling stability, retaining 85 % of their capacity over 8000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A/g. Furthermore, flexible pouch cells achieve an average capacity of 190 mAh/g at 4 mA/cm² with an 8 mg/cm² mass loading, maintaining stable performance even under repeated folding. Density functional theory calculations and experimental analysis reveal that two-dimension graphene oxide molecules on the Zn surface suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction and promote Zn (002) planar growth during plating. Moreover, the p -π conjugation strengthens interactions between graphene oxide and polyiodides, accelerating conversion kinetics and effectively suppressing the shuttle effect. This work highlights the multifunctional role of commercially available graphene oxide in stabilizing zinc-iodine batteries and provides new insights into engineering p -band center materials for catalyst design in advanced energy storage systems.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER)is crucial for the development of energy storage technologies such as water splitting for hydrogen production and metal-air batteries; therefore, developing efficient electrocatalysts is key to advancing OER. NiFe₂O₄, as a typical spinel-structured transition metal oxide, features nickel ions Ni 2+ preferentially occupying tetrahedral sites and iron ions Fe 3+ occupying octahedral sites within its crystal lattice. This unique dual-metal site distribution significantly optimizes the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates through Ni Fe electronic synergy, overcoming the inherent activity limitations of single-metal oxides. Simultaneously, its high electrical conductivity and robust stability in alkaline environments make it an ideal alternative to precious metal catalysts. However, its intrinsic activity remains constrained by the sluggish kinetics of the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and insufficient exposure of surface active sites. To address this, this study focuses on a breakthrough modification of nickel ferrite NiFe₂O₄: employing a phosphorus doping strategy, the reaction mechanism is successfully transformed from the AEM to the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) during the heating process, with optimization of heating time and temperature parameters. The optimized phosphorus-doped nickel ferrite NFO − P achieves a low overpotential of 229 mV and a Tafel slope of 75.1 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 —its performance significantly surpasses that of pristine NiFe₂O₄ and approaches the level of precious metal IrO₂. This work concurrently reveals that phosphorus doping overcomes the activity limitations of the traditional AEM pathway by weakening metal‑oxygen bonds and activating lattice oxygen, thereby providing a reference for “AEM → LOM” mechanism regulation in transition metal oxide catalysts.

This study presents the fabrication of ultrathin, mechanically strong poly( p -phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofiber films and their integration into composite materials. A novel sol-gel-film method was established for producing PBO nanofiber films, with an orthogonal experimental design employed to optimize the effects of PBO concentration and dissolution time on the mechanical properties. The optimal conditions (PBO concentration of 2.8 g/L and dissolution time of 40 h) yielded a tensile strength of 683 MPa and a Young's modulus of 12.05 GPa. Furthermore, PBO nanocomposite films incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were developed. The PBO/Ag nanocomposite film with 10% Ag NPs content exhibited notable mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 239 MPa and a Young's modulus of 5.91 GPa, and an exceptional electrical conductivity of 401.6 S/cm. The nanocomposite films also demonstrated enhanced hydrophobicity, UV resistance, antibacterial properties, and flame retardancy. Pressure sensors based on the PBO/Ag nanocomposite films showed high sensitivity and stability, whereas electric heaters exhibited remarkable heat resistance, rapid response times, and elevated heating temperatures. Additionally, a polyaniline (PANI) coating doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was synthesized on the PBO/Ag nanocomposite films, resulting in flexible PBO/Ag@PANI/CNT electrodes. These electrodes, with 30% CNTs, achieved an impressive areal capacitance of 6885.13 mF/cm 2 and maintained 82.67% of their initial capacitance after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. These findings highlight the significant potential of PBO nanofiber-based nanocomposites in flexible electronics and advanced energy storage systems.

The advancement of PMS (peroxymonosulfate)-activating platforms with high activity and wide adaptability carries substantial significance in wastewater remediation. Employing dual-phase modification via phosphorization and H₂-Ar etching, we fabricate multi-component active centers (sulfides/phosphides) to achieve enhanced activity and extended degradation capability toward diverse pollutants. To evaluate practical applicability, key process parameters, including catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, and TC (tetracycline) concentration, were optimized. Concurrently, the effects of common interfering ions, pH variations, and different water matrices (river water and seawater) on TC degradation were investigated. Results demonstrate that the catalytic system achieves 100 % TC removal at 20 mg L −1 TC and 94.5 % removal at 30 mg L −1 TC. The system maintained high degradation efficiency with minimal impact from interfering ions and diverse water sources, demonstrating robust environmental adaptability. Additionally, it exhibits efficient degradation performance across a wide range of contaminant species. ESR (electron spin resonance spectroscopy) analysis coupled with quenching experiments verified that ·OH, SO₄· − , and 1 O₂ mediate organic pollutant degradation, wherein singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂) plays a dominant role.

Lead sulfide (PbS) colloidal quantum dot (CQD) photodetectors are promising devices for low-cost, high-performance, and large-area infrared imaging. For integration with readout integrated circuits (ROICs), top illumination is urgently required to ensure simultaneous light absorption and signal acquisition. However, the traditional best-performing p-on-n PbS CQD photodetectors rely on opaque top metal contacts, thus limiting the development of top-illuminated imagers. Herein, we addressed this issue by introducing a bifunctional ZnTe layer. The presence of the ZnTe layer─while allowing efficient hole collection─serves as a protective layer for the CQD layer during subsequent transparent electrode deposition. The resultant PbS CQD photodetectors based on the ZnTe layer show a specific detectivity of 2.09 × 1012 Jones at ≈1300 nm, representing approximately a 5-fold improvement over the control device (4.30 × 1011 Jones). This performance is comparable to that of the best PbS CQD photodetectors reported at similar wavelengths. The advantages of this architecture are further demonstrated by building a PbS CQD imager with a pixel array of 256 × 256, verifying the compatibility of photodetectors with ROICs.
