A nano-Al2O3 modified polypropylene hollow fiber membrane with enhanced biofilm formation in membrane aerated biofilm reactor application

Chao Wang,Hongyang Li,Bixin Wu,Jianqiang Meng

ABSTRACT Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) stands out as an innovative technology for wastewater treatment. However, biofilm formation poses a significant challenge in its implementation. Surface modification emerges as a viable strategy to enhance biofilm development. In this study, biofilm formation was effectively promoted by coating polydopamine (PDA) and loading aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al 2 O 3 NPs) onto a polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane, aiming to improve wettability and potential. Results from the bacterial attachment assay demonstrated a significantly higher bacterial attachment rate on the membrane loaded with Al 2 O 3 NPs compared to PDA/PP and PP membranes. A comprehensive investigation into the MABR process was conducted, assessing both short-term and long-term (72 days) performance. In the short-term process, the Al 2 O 3 NPs-PDA modified membrane exhibited superior removal efficiency for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and total nitrogen (TN) compared to other membranes. Transitioning to the long-term process, the start-up period for the Al 2 O 3 NPs (10) -PDA/PP membrane was notably shortened to 27 days, surpassing the start-up times of PP and PDA/PP membranes by 13 and 5 days, respectively. Throughout the long-term operation, when the influent COD, NH 4 + -N, and TN concentrations increased, the Al 2 O 3 NPs-PDA/PP membrane consistently maintained removal efficiency above 95%, 98%, and 85% for COD, NH 4 + -N, and TN, respectively, demonstrating excellent resistance to shock loading.

Catalytic hydrolysis of COS over unsupported Al2O3: New insights into the influence of hydroxyl characteristics on hydrolysis efficiency

Yu Tian,Kunlin Li,Fei Wang,Xin Sun,Kai Li,Ping Ning

H 2 O molecules are challenging to dissociate at low temperatures to produce hydroxyl groups for heterogeneous carbonyl sulfide (COS) hydrolysis. Utilizing the inherent hydroxyl groups on Al 2 O 3 surfaces for catalytic COS hydrolysis is effective; however, the relationship between the hydroxyl nature and hydrolysis efficiency remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of crystal structure, surface morphology, specific surface area, and hydroxyl characteristics of Al 2 O 3 on COS hydrolysis efficiency. Results showed that the content, stability, and activity of hydroxyl groups significantly impacted the efficiency. Catalysts prepared from commercial alumina (Al 2 O 3 -C) exhibited superior COS hydrolysis efficiencies under both dry and humid conditions compared to pseudo-boehmite derived Al 2 O 3 (Al 2 O 3 -S) and boehmite derived Al 2 O 3 (Al 2 O 3 -B) owing to the higher, more stable, and active hydroxyl content in Al 2 O 3 -C. Although Al 2 O 3 -S contained a sufficient amount of surface hydroxyl, its lower activity reduced the hydrolysis efficiency. The catalytic COS hydrolysis mechanism over hydroxyl-rich Al 2 O 3 was elucidated through various characterization methods, providing new insights into the correlation between Al 2 O 3 surface hydroxyl properties and COS hydrolysis efficiency.

Partial removal of Al2O3 enhanced production of aromatic hydrocarbons from catalytic pyrolysis of waste lithium-ion battery separators

Kai Li,Wan-zhao Huang,Dong-hong Nan,Qi Niu,Xi Luo,Bin Hu,Dan Yan,Qiang Lu

A new method for the sustainable utilization of waste lithium-ion battery separators was developed, involving the hydrochloric acid washing to partially remove the Al 2 O 3 coating, followed by catalytic pyrolysis to produce aromatic hydrocarbons with HZSM-5. The separators composed of polyethylene as base film were selected as the feedstock. The effects of acid washing pretreatment on the physicochemical properties and pyrolysis characteristics of the separators were studied. The results showed that the partial removal of Al 2 O 3 coating not only enhanced the heat and mass transfer, improving the primary thermal decomposition of organic matter and increasing the formation of volatiles, but also promoted the contact between volatiles and Al 2 O 3 , resulting in the cracking of large molecular substances into small molecular olefins. This pretreatment process was conducive to the production of aromatic hydrocarbons during the catalytic pyrolysis over HZSM-5. The aromatic hydrocarbons yield, calculated based on the ash-free separator, reached a maximum value of 83.20 wt% under conditions of 1.5 mol/L hydrochloric acid concentration and a catalyst/separator ratio of 12 at 650℃. This yield surpassed the yields of 59.24 wt% from untreated separator and 64.39 wt% from pure polyethylene separator.

Stability Enhancement of the Platinum Thin Film Temperature Detector up to 1400°C by Printing Al2O3 Protective Layer

Haigang Wang,Zhichun Liu,Biling Wang,Mingyang Kong,Dezhi Xu,Liangjie Gao,Qiang Li,Zhipeng Zhao,Wenqi Lu,Xin Zhao,Junsheng Liang

Platinum (Pt) resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) are extensively employed as thin-film temperature sensors. However, agglomeration of Pt thin films occurs above 800 °C due to grain boundary grooving on the free surface, ultimately limiting its application at high temperatures. In this work, a Pt RTD was prepared by depositing multilayer Al2O3 protective layer on Pt thin films using electrodynamic jet printing (EJP) technology. The surface morphology and energy-dispersive spectroscopy spectrum of Pt thin films indicated that the voids on the surface are reduced, the grains’ growth is inhibited, and the movement and grooving of grain boundaries are limited. The test results indicate that the Pt RTD has not failed after six cycles of repeated warming and cooling from 800 °C to 1300 °C. After repeated cycles, the initial resistance of the Pt RTD is with a rate of change of less than 0.5%. In addition, the maximum relative deviation of the resistance in a single cycle is less than 1.6%. The Pt RTD with an 18-layer Al2O3 protective layer has undergone 12 cycles without failure, indicating a cycle life exceeding 10 h. Pt RTDs are stable over the range of 25 °C–1400 °C with correlation coefficients R2 greater than 0.999, showing good linear correlation. It can withstand temperatures up to 1440 °C when printed with 18 protective layers. Compared to a Pt RTD without protective layers, the operating temperature is increased by 40%. This advancement provides a viable solution for the high-temperature monitoring of hot-end components in aerospace applications.

Unravelling the reaction mechanism and structure-performance relationship for selective oxidation of ethylene glycol over Pt/Al2O3 catalyst

Shiping Wu,Yanhong Quan,Shunan Yin,Jun Ren

A series of Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were fabricated by finely adjusting the amount of platinum and investigated in the selective oxidative of ethylene glycol (EG) to glycolic acid (GA) under mild neutral conditions. The 0.90Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst showed the maximum turnover frequency (TOF: 1106.6 h −1 ) with the EG conversion of 74.2 % and GA selectivity of 90.2 %. A strong linear relationship between TOF values and Pt 0 concentration was revealed, confirming that Pt 0 species serves as the active sites for GA formation. In addition, in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results verify the reaction pathways of EG oxidation as follows: C 2 H 6 O 2 → HOCH 2 CHO → HOCH 2 COOH. This work unraveled structure-performance relationship for the selective EG oxidation over Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, providing important guidance for the design of efficient noble catalysts especially for the oxidation reaction of polyols.

Unveiling the effects of support crystal phase on Cu/Al2O3 catalysts for furfural selective hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol

Yongzhen Gao,Jingpeng Hu,Wen-Jing Yi,Jingyi Yang,Kai Jiang,Tao Yang,Zhihan Li,Meng Zhang,Zhongyi Liu,Benlai Wu

Support crystal phase plays a crucial role in the controlled C O hydrogenation over the supported catalysts. Herein, the effects of Al 2 O 3 crystal phase (α, θ, η, and γ) on the supported Cu-based catalyst is highlighted for furfural (FAL) hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FA). The evaluation results show that Cu/η-Al 2 O 3 exhibits the best performance (FAL conversion: 99.7 %, FA selectivity: 94.0 %), highest TOF value (29.3 h −1 ) and lowest apparent activation energy (66.3 kJ/mol). The comprehensive characterizations unravel that Cu/η-Al 2 O 3 has the smallest Cu nanoparticles and the highest content of Cu + and Cu 0 , which facilitates H 2 dissociation and FAL adsorption. The reaction mechanisms suggest that Cu/η-Al 2 O 3 has the strongest FAL adsorption and FA desorption capacity. Moreover, it is demonstrated that FAL is linear chemical adsorption on the catalyst surface in the η 1 (O) configuration, which avoids the furan ring hydrogenation, and thereby, results in the high FA selectivity. This work would provide some references for developing the high-efficiency C O hydrogenation catalysts.

Vat photopolymerization 3D printing of Al2O3 ceramic cores with strip-shaped pores by using polyamide 6 fiber template

Xiaofei Zhai,Jingyi Chen,Ruyue Su,Xiong Gao,Xueqin Zhang,Rujie He

The complex ceramic core used for hollow turbine blades requires high porosity and flexural strength. This work combined vat photopolymerization 3D printing with sacrificial template method to prepare Al 2 O 3 ceramic cores with strip-shaped pores using polyamide 6 (PA6) fibers as templates. When the porosity was greater than 30%, the maximum flexural strength reached up to 110.48 MPa. The sacrificial templating method improved the porosity of Al 2 O 3 ceramic cores, forming an internal porous structure that combined strip-shaped large pores with irregularly shaped small pores. The influences of PA6 fiber content and diameter on the shrinkage, porosity, microstructure, and comprehensive properties of alumina ceramic cores were studied, revealing the mechanism of the coexistence of high porosity and high strength.

Structural defect and activated alumina of spheric α-Al2O3 improving alumina ceramics density from the industrial coarse gibbsite

Zhenhao Yang,Guihua Liu,Tiangui Qi,Qiusheng Zhou,Zhihong Peng,Leiting Shen,Yilin Wang,Xiaobin Li

The quality of alumina ceramics generally depends on alumina powder. High-density alumina ceramics were prepared from industrial coarse gibbsite. Near-spheric α-Al 2 O 3 with particles smaller than 500 nm was produced via the synergy of B and F from NH 4 BF 4 . The near-spheric α-Al 2 O 3 calcined at low temperature generated alumina ceramics with high density and low porosity. Meanwhile, the wet pretreatment yielded smaller particles with structural distortion and high microstrain and aluminum hydroxide, notably increasing the relative density of alumina ceramics. 99.18 % relative density, 0.017 % porosity, and 27.54 GPa Vickers hardness of alumina ceramics were achieved at 1650 °C for 2 h without additives and pressed sintering. In addition, the early stage of sintering of alumina green body followed particle boundary diffusion with reduced activation energy in the sintering process. The close packing of the spheric α-Al 2 O 3 , high microstrain of α-Al 2 O 3 , structural defects with considerable AlO 4 units calcined at low temperature, structural distortion in the alumina, and activated alumina on the α-Al 2 O 3 surface collectively promoted the densification of alumina ceramics, achieving remarkable hardness, high density, and tiny porosity.

Synergistic role of Cu0 and acidic sites in Cu/Al2O3 catalysts for enhanced furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol

Shanguang Xu,Xin Han,Fan Zhang,Zhengyang Sun,Ruiying Chai,Fei Xu,Shanguo Du,Xiuling Jiao,Dairong Chen,Jie Zhang

The development of efficient catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is of great importance for sustainable chemical production. In this study, a highly efficient Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst was developed for the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL, achieving 100 % conversion and 100 % selectivity at 85 °C and 1.0 MPa H 2 with the optimal 7Cu/Al 2 O 3 -AIP catalyst, which was tailored by modulating the surface acidity of Al 2 O 3 and the distribution of Cu species. Evaluation of Cu-supported varying Al 2 O 3 catalysts revealed a near-linear correlation between the density of medium-strong acidic sites and catalytic activity, unequivocally demonstrating that medium-strong acidic sites on the alumina surface serve as the active sites for the reaction, which was further corroborated by competitive adsorption experiments involving pyridine and furfural. Furthermore, the density of Cu 0 sites was varied by adjusting the copper loading and conducting N 2 O selective oxidation experiments. Notably, a linear increase in catalytic activity was observed with the Cu 0 /(Cu 0  + Cu + ) ratio on the catalyst surface. Advanced characterization techniques, combined with experimental results, elucidated that the Cu 0 species act as the primary active sites for H 2 activation, while acidic sites are crucial for FAL adsorption, leading to the exceptional catalytic performance by the synergistic catalysis. This study underscores the synergistic effect between Cu 0 species and acidic sites, providing profound mechanistic insights into the FAL hydrogenation process and establishing a strategic foundation for the rational design of highly efficient Cu-based catalysts.

Influence of laser texturing parameters on SiC ceramic joints brazed with CaO-Al2O3-MgO-Y2O3-SiO2 glass filler

Kun-Heng Huang,Chuang-Tian Zhan,Huan Zhou,Shi-Kuan Sun,Yun Li,Li-Xiang Wu,Jia-Xiang Xue,Jian-Han Zhai,Wei-Ming Guo,Hua-Tay Lin

This study investigated the effect of laser texturing parameters on the shear strength and microstructure of SiC ceramic joints, which were joined using CaO-Al 2 O 3 -MgO-Y 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CAMYS) glass filler. It was demonstrated that laser texturing promotes the formation of SiO 2 on the surface and subsequent filler adhesion. Groove depth and spacing were identified as critical factors for joint performance. Excessive groove depth (∼60 μm) caused incomplete groove filling and reduced joint strength, due to void formation. Similarly, decreased texturing spacing (∼200 μm) induced excessive thermal damage and compromised joint robustness, as observed in laser-treated ceramic surfaces. Among the five evaluated texturing configurations, the optimal condition, defined by a groove depth of ∼30 μm and spacing of ∼500 μm, yielded a maximum shear strength of 80 ± 12 MPa, representing a 77.8 % improvement over untextured joints (45 ± 10 MPa).

Atmosphere-pretreatment-induced structural reorganization of Al2O3-supported phosphorus oxynitride for enhanced catalytic activity in ethylbenzene direct dehydrogenation

Yuan Ma,Baining Lin,Chaojun Guo,Yang Yang,Chuli Shi,Shuobin Fu,Yonghua Zhou

Non-metallic materials have attracted continuous interest in the direct dehydrogenation (DDH) of ethylbenzene due to their coke resistance and environmental friendliness. However, the catalytic activity was limited by the exposed density of active sites in non-metal catalysts. Herein, we report an atmosphere-pretreatment strategy using H 2 or O 2 at 350 ℃ to improve the exposure of active sites in Al 2 O 3 -supported phosphorus oxynitride (PNO) catalysts, thereby enhancing their catalytic performance in DDH of ethylbenzene. XPS, FTIR, and in situ DRIFTS analyses demonstrated that H 2 or O 2 pretreatment partially cleaved P–N bonds in the P 3 N 5 framework, inducing structural reorganization and exposing the inner N 2 P = O groups, thereby increasing the active site density. Among them, the H 2 -pretreated PNO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (PNO/Al 2 O 3 -H) exhibited the highest N 2 P = O content (a 74.2 % increase compared with PNO/Al 2 O 3 ), which resulted in the highest catalytic activity ( X EB =58.5 %) under high-concentration ethylbenzene feed (12.2 vol%). This work demonstrates, for the first time, the application of atmosphere pretreatment to phosphorus-nitrogen catalysts and proposes a novel strategy for regulating the active site in dehydrogenation catalysis.

Efficient Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds Over Ru-Based Catalyst with Biochar and Al2O3 as Composite Support

Tao Yin,Yichao Ye,Hao Jiang,Chengyin Lin,Riyang Shu,Zhipeng Tian,Chao Wang,Ning Shi

Graphical This work proposed a novel and stable Ru-based catalyst with biochar and Al 2 O 3 as composite support, which achieved an outstanding performance on the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and raw lignin-oil. Under the catalysis of optimized Ru/C-Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the hydrocarbon content increased significantly from 10.7 % to 95.7 % at 230 °C. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a common strategy for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-quality liquid fuels, and the support rational design of HDO catalysts is critical to achieve a good reaction performance. This work proposed a novel Ru-based catalyst with biochar and Al 2 O 3 as composite support. The addition of biochar can enlarge the porous structure, and the addition of Al 2 O 3 can enhance the acid property of the support. By regulating the content of biochar and Al 2 O 3 components, Ru/CA-2 catalyst achieved the best HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, with the optimal component balance of 50 %C and 50 %Al 2 O 3 . This catalyst possesses the high Ru metal dispersion (1.38 nm particle size) to activate the hydrogen source, the moderate acid property to suppress carbon deposition and the abundant oxygen vacancy to promote substrate adsorption at the same time. 99.9 % conversion of guaiacol is obtained at 230 °C, with 99.9 % selectivity towards cyclohexane. Ru/CA-2 catalyst also has a good recyclability, with no obvious activity loss after five runs. Furthermore, in the application of catalytic lignin-oil HDO, the content of hydrocarbons increase from 10.7 % to 95.7 %, showing great potential on the industrial usage.
