Excessive levels of phosphate (PO 4 3- ), molybdate (MoO 4 2- ), and tungstate (WO 4 2- ) in water bodies pose significant risks, not only triggering eutrophication and harming aquatic organisms, but also endangering human health. Conventional detection methods suffer from reliance on expensive instruments and complex sample pretreatment procedures, thus failing to meet the demands of on-site rapid monitoring. Employing a synergistic strategy of bimetallic co-doping and surface modification, L -carnosine modified Co/Mn-CeO 2 nanozymes were synthesized via an alkaline precipitation method. And the phosphatase-like activity of Co/Mn-CeO 2 was significantly superior to that of pure CeO 2 and single-metal-doped nanozymes. Dual-metal doping not only increased the oxygen vacancy content and Ce 4+ proportion in CeO 2 from 25.8% to 56.2% and from 49% to 61.2%, respectively, but also established a multivalent cycle, resulting in enhanced electron transfer. Capitalizing on the specific inhibition of Co/Mn-CeO 2 nanozyme's phosphatase-like activity by these three anions (PO 4 3- , MoO 4 2- , WO 4 2- ), a colorimetric detection platform was established. This platform enables the sensitive and highly selective detection of the three target ions. Spiked recovery rates in mimicked industrial wastewater reached 91.11% - 102.21%, and in natural river water samples ranged from 96.13% to 104.60%, demonstrating good accuracy in real environmental matrices. The strategy developed in this work provides a practical solution for modulating CeO 2 -based nanozymes, thereby enabling the on-site detection of multiple anions in water environments.

Achieving a simultaneous enhancement of material removal efficiency and surface quality remains a central challenge in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of silicon dioxide. Conventional CeO 2 abrasives, despite their high chemical activity, are prone to agglomeration and cause detrimental scratches. To address this, a core-shell structured poly(methyl methacrylate)@CeO 2 (PMMA@CeO 2 ) composite abrasive was rationally designed and synthesized, in which flexible PMMA microspheres serve as the core and epitaxially grown CeO 2 nanocrystals form the active shell. By precisely controlling the Ce precursor concentration from 2 to 20 mmol, the CeO 2 loading can be systematically tuned from approximately 15 wt% to a saturation level of ∼31.5 wt%, demonstrating a well-bounded and highly controllable synthesis. Comprehensive characterizations confirm the uniform core-shell morphology, high crystallinity, and a consistent high relative Ce 3+ whose absolute number increases with the tunable CeO 2 loading. The optimized abrasive achieves a material removal rate of 102 nm/min and an ultra-low surface roughness of 0.112 nm on SiO 2 film, approaching atomic-level smoothness. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the work function difference between CeO 2 (111) and SiO 2 (001) drives directional electron transfer from CeO 2 to SiO 2 . This electron redistribution strengthens the topmost Si-O bond via chemisorption while imposing tensile stress that elongates and weakens the sub-surface Si-O bonds, potentially promoting preferential cleavage under mechanical shear. This atomic-scale insight, combined with the mechanical buffering effect of the PMMA core, establishes a unique synergy in which the CeO 2 shell provides high chemical activity for efficient material removal and the PMMA core suppresses scratching to ensure atomically smooth, low-damage finishing. This work provides a rational design paradigm for core-shell abrasives and a fundamental theoretical basis for next-generation high-performance CMP materials.

Room-temperature (RT) detection of NO 2 remains challenging because low-temperature operation often limits surface reactivity and charge-transport modulation. Here, a noble-metal-decorated hollow cage-like oxide is constructed by integrating a template-assisted route with hydrothermal processing, yielding a cauliflower-like architecture with a high specific surface area and abundant, accessible adsorption sites for NO 2 capture. Surface decoration further enriches oxygen vacancies and enhances the oxygen storage capacity, promoting oxygen activation and NO x surface chemistry under ambient conditions. Meanwhile, the formation of a Schottky barrier between Pd and CeO 2 enhances the conductivity and electron mobility of the composite. As a result, the chemiresistive sensor delivers a response of 32.84 toward 100 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, with a 3 s response and 15 s recovery, while maintaining good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability. The device further achieves a 30 ppb detection limit, highlighting this hollow, vacancy-rich microcage platform as an effective strategy for low-power NO 2 monitoring. This work provides a generalizable interface and defect engineering strategy for next-generation RT NO 2 sensors.

Nickel‑iron-based electrocatalysts have emerged as highly promising candidates for replacing precious metals in various electrochemical applications due to their abundance, high efficiency, and low cost. The deactivation of the active sites occurs, however, due to the tendency of the amorphous particles of the simple nickel‑iron alloy to agglomerate during the reaction. Therefore, maintaining long-term stable and efficient catalytic activity remains a challenge for nickel‑iron alloys. To address these challenges, here in this work, we developed a stabilized CeO 2 nanoplates as the main carrier and synthesized nickel‑iron alloy nanoparticles supported on hexagonal cerium dioxide nanoplates (NiFe/CeO 2 ) by a simple hydrothermal method. Interestingly, the introduction of NiFe can reduce the Ce O cerium‑oxygen covalency in CeO 2 , which leads to the weakening of its surface oxygen binding, the generation of a large number of oxygen vacancies, and the enhancement of the co-catalytic activity. Thereby, the NiFe/CeO 2 catalyst delivered a current of 10 mA/cm 2 at an overpotential of only 198 mV, with a Tafel slope as low as 48.6 mV/dec. Meanwhile, the unique hexagonal structure of cerium oxide nanoplates provides a stable and highly conductive support, resulting in a larger contact area between the catalyst and the electrolyte, and faster adsorption and desorption rates. This greatly solves the problem of easy agglomeration and deactivation of the catalyst and significantly improves the structural stability of NiFe. In stability tests, the NiFe/CeO 2 catalyst maintained excellent electrocatalytic stability for up to 120 h. This study provides new insights into designing high-performance OER catalysts by leveraging metal-support interactions and nanostructural engineering, highlighting the potential of hexagonal CeO 2 nanoplates as effective stabilizing carriers.

Nanostructured ceria has attracted much attention in the field of redox catalysts due to the numerous active sites with excellent redox ability. Based on the acidic medium etching strategy, we constructed the strong binding centers (hydroxyl sites and strong acid sites) on the surfaces of nanostructured ceria, which regulate the adsorption process of KA-Oil (the mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone) and to promote high KA-Oil selectivity in cyclohexane oxidation. The three CeO 2 (nanocube, nanorod and nanopolyhedron) with different exposed crystal planes were treated by acid etching to change the surface sites and catalytic properties. The transition behavior of surface sites during etching was revealed, abundant strong binding centers were proved to be constructed successfully. And especially for the nanorod treated by acid (Acid@CeO 2 -NR) with the strongest response for sulfuric acid etching, the strong adsorption of cyclohexanone by strong binding centers was confirmed based on the in-situ DRIFTs. The sulfuric acid etching strategy to enhance the selective oxidation of cyclohexane based on the construction of strong binding centers was proved to be feasible and effective, Acid@CeO 2 -NR with strongest etching response achieved the dramatic promotion of KA-Oil selectivity from 64.1% to 92.3%.

The synthesis of high performance catalysts for the catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) in water remains a challenge, and is a topic of considerable importance in relation to sustainability. In this paper, a Ru-CNx/CeO2catalyst was synthesized through a modified impregnation process for the CWO of MDEA, exhibiting a high activity of 80% COD removal at 180 °C and 2.5 MPa. EPR, Raman, and XPS characterizations revealed that the CNxspecies facilitated the reduction in Ru4+to Ru0species and enhanced the Ru–Ce interaction to form a high-density Ru-O-Ce structure with Ce3+sites, which strongly correlate to the generation of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancies enabled the adsorption and activation of the oxygen, generating active species (h+, ·O2−, and ·OH) that effectively oxidized the MDEA during the catalytic reaction.

Nickel-based catalysts are prone to sintering and carbon deposition during methane dry reforming (DRM), which limits their industrial application. This study addresses these challenges by designing Ni/CeO 2 catalysts with controlled Ni nanoparticle sizes. By varying calcination temperatures, selecting different calcination atmospheres, and comparing preparation methods (equal-volume impregnation vs. combustion method), a series of Ni-based catalysts with different particle sizes were synthesized. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were elucidated through various characterization techniques. ICP-OES confirmed that the actual Ni loading closely matched the nominal value. XRD and TEM analyses verified that the combustion method yielded smaller NiO nanoparticles with higher dispersion compared to the impregnation method. This advantage stems from the rapid, self-sustaining redox reaction in the combustion process, which effectively inhibits NiO nuclei migration and agglomeration. Consequently, catalysts prepared by the combustion method exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability in DRM. The enhanced performance is directly linked to the smaller Ni particle size, which provides a greater number of active sites and promotes stronger metal-support interactions, thereby improving resistance to sintering and carbon deposition. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the smaller Ni nanoparticles were more active, possessing a lower apparent activation energy for methane reforming than the larger particles. These findings provide a clear strategy for the rational design of coke- and sintering-resistant Ni/CeO 2 catalysts for carbon-based energy conversion.

In this study, we utilized a green method to prepare the material precursor (CC/CA/Ni2+-Ce3+) by using commercial cotton cloth (CC) and cellulose acetate (CA) as sources, leveraging the synergistic chelation effect of cellulose acetate and cotton cloth to coordinate nickel and cerium ions. Subsequently, precursor CF-C/Ni-CeO2 was obtained through high-temperature pyrolysis, followed by phosphidation to form the CF-C/Ni2P-CeO2 heterostructure. Within this structure, CeO2 acts as an “electron acceptor”, enabling electron transfer from Ni2P to CeO2 and promoting rapid charge redistribution through an oxygen vacancy-mediated electron–ion cooperative transport mechanism. This process optimizes the adsorption free energy of hydrogen intermediates (ΔGH*) during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This synergistic effect of dual active sites enables the CF-C/Ni2P-CeO2-2 electrode with outstanding HER catalytic performance under alkaline conditions, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of only 102 mV and 100 mA cm–2 at 234 mV, while maintaining stability for more than 50 h at a high current of approximately 100 mA cm–2.

This study designed a polyurethane core–shell fiber (PU CSF) wound dressing, which achieved unique redox catalytic function by loading nanoceria (n-CeO2) nanozyme and effectively reduced potential side effects. The stability of ceria nanoparticles with superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic activity was optimized. Engineered PU CSFs with different doses of citrate-modified nanospheres (CeO2@PU CSFs) were successfully fabricated via electrospinning and showed excellent SOD-mimetic activity in reducing oxidative stress both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, low-dose nanoceria PU CSFs demonstrated advantages in promoting wound healing and reducing scar formation compared to high-dose and SOD-loaded groups (p< 0.05), despite lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity (p< 0.001). Transcriptome analysis revealed distinct mechanisms in rat skin studies: the CeO2-loaded dressing systemically downregulated cell activation- and innate immunity-related genes (Fos, Trpm2, Cybb, and Nlrc4), while the SOD-loaded group specifically regulated inflammation mediated by oxidative stress (IL17a and Ccl20). The optimized core–shell structure and low-dose nanoceria provided balanced redox modulation, effectively protecting cells from oxidative damage while providing a multifunctional therapeutic platform for damaged wound healing.

Chronic overexposure to aluminum ions can cause damage to human brain and nervous system. In this work, a new strategy for colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode detection of aluminum ions (Al 3+ ) was developed, which based on the excellent phosphatase-like activity of histidine-functionalized manganese-doped cerium dioxide nanoparticles (Mn-CeO 2 NPs). Water-soluble, uniform and highly dispersible Mn-CeO 2 NPs were prepared by a green and simple one-pot synthesis method. And the NPs with phosphatase-like activity can catalyze the dephosphorylation of phosphate substrates p-nitrophenyl picolinate (p-NPP) and 4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate (4-MUP) to obtain products with UV–vis and fluorescence signals. Interestingly, Al 3+ can chelate with O atoms on the surface of nanozymes, causing them to aggregate, and thereby reducing their catalytic activity. Based on this principle, a simple, sensitive colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode sensor for detecting Al 3+ was constructed, and the response time could be as short as 1 min. The linear ranges of colorimetric and fluorescent analysis of Al 3+ were 1–30 μM and 1–15 μM, and the limits of detection (LOD) were 0.86 μM and 0.29 μM, respectively. This study not only synthesized an efficient phosphatase-like nanozyme by defect engineering, but also opened up a new channel for sensitive and rapid detection of Al 3+ .

For bimetallic nanozymes, the closeness between the two elements is closely related to their properties, but achieving tight contact between the two components still faces challenges. Herein, copper was introduced by the coordination effect between the organic ligand in Ce-MOF and Cu 2+ , then a series of Cu-CeO 2 nanozymes were obtained by thermal treatment. The content of copper can be easily controlled and the spindle-shaped structure assembled by multilayer flakes can be obtained. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) detection program based on the excellent peroxidase (POD)-like activity of the as-prepared Cu-CeO 2 nanozyme showed a wide linear detection range and ideal detection limits for ascorbic acid (AA), glutathione (GSH), Trolox and cysteine (Cys). More importantly, this method can be applied in TAC detection of commercial samples. This work provided a method for the design of high performance bimetallic nanozymes and developed a sensor that can be applied to detect TAC in vitamin C tablets and beverages.

Cerium-based catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR) face significant challenges in practical applications, particularly their poor low-temperature activity and susceptibility to SO2 poisoning. In this study, photothermal catalysis was innovatively applied to the NH3-SCR reaction over MoWOx/CeO2 catalysts, achieving remarkable improvements in the low-temperature performance and SO2 resistance. Under photothermal conditions, the catalyst maintained NOx conversion above 90% at 200 °C, even in the presence of 250 ppm of SO2. Comprehensive characterization revealed that light irradiation significantly enhanced the formation of oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface and weakened NO adsorption, indicating that the NH3-SCR reaction follows the Eley–Rideal mechanism, which contributes to its excellent low-temperature activity. Moreover, photothermal conditions reduced the chemical adsorption intensity of SO2, effectively inhibiting the formation of ammonium sulfate. Density functional theory calculations further demonstrated that the narrow band gap of MoWOx promotes electron transfer from the O 2p orbital to the Ce 4f orbital at the Ce–O–Mo(W) interface under light, leading to electron enrichment at active sites and suppression of SO2 oxidation. This work not only provides a novel strategy for enhancing the NH3-SCR performance but also represents a groundbreaking advancement in the design of highly efficient, SO2-resistant catalysts for low-temperature applications.
