Pore-matched activated carbon with Nanoconfined reactors for efficient NOx separation from industrial flue gas

Chen Yang,Wanxiong Xiao,Jiahao Zhang,Liqiang Qi,Hejin Yuan,Yajuan Zhang

Nitrogen oxides (NO) emitted from industrial flue gas are significant air pollutants; however, their efficient separation at room temperature remains a challenge due to the weak affinity of activated carbon (AC) for NO. In this study, we present a metal-free strategy for constructing nanoconfined reactors within commercial AC through glucose-assisted hydrothermal carbonization followed by CO 2 activation. This innovative approach facilitates dual pore regulation: glucose-derived carbon microspheres effectively narrow oversized pores, while subsequent CO 2 activation refines the structure to concentrate micropores at approximately 0.7 nm, which precisely matches the molecular dimensions of NO and creates confinement spaces conducive to catalytic oxidation. Concurrently, the process enriches stable carbonyl groups (C=O) that act as active sites within these confined spaces. The optimal material (800 AC-0.2G-180H-800C4) exhibits a micropore surface area of 432.9 m 2 /g within the 0.643–0.804 nm range and achieves a NO x adsorption capacity of 2.09 ± 0.10 mmol/g at room temperature—1.32 times higher than that of pristine AC. At 55 °C, it maintains a capacity of 0.31 ± 0.02 mmol/g, which is 3.43-fold greater than that of unmodified AC (0.07 ± 0.03 mmol/g). Kinetic analysis indicates that the confined micropores enhance the collision frequency of NO-O 2 , while carbonyl groups facilitate NO activation, together enabling efficient catalytic oxidation. Unlike metal-based modifications, this method avoids secondary pollution and allows for easy disposal of spent adsorbents. This work presents a sustainable pathway for designing high-performance carbon materials for industrial NO x abatement through the synergy of confinement and catalysis.

Mixed Matrix Membranes Based on Nanoporous Organic Cages and a Noncoplanar Polyimide for Gas Separation

Yulin Huang,Chao Shan,Xiuyuan Wei,Xiaohua Huang

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted considerable attention for gas separation because nanoscale engineering of filler structure and polymer/filler interfaces can improve overall separation performance. In this study, a monomer, 4,4′-diamino-4″-dibenzofuran-triphenylamine (DATPA), was synthesized, and a noncoplanar copolyimide was subsequently prepared using DATPA, 9,9-bis(4-amino-3-fluorophenyl)fluorene (FFDA), and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). MMMs were then fabricated by solution blending using Noria as a nanoporous organic cage filler and the copolyimide as the matrix. Owing to the intrinsic subnanometer cavities of Noria and the resulting nanoscale transport features introduced into the membrane structure, the incorporation of Noria significantly enhanced gas separation performance. At a Noria loading of 9 wt %, the permeabilities of He, CO2, O2, and N2 increased by 96%, 134%, 57%, and 41%, respectively, compared with the pure polyimide membrane. Furthermore, at a 6 wt % loading, the ideal selectivities for He/N2 and CO2/N2 reached 77.9 and 26.0, corresponding to improvements of 42% and 57%, respectively. These results demonstrate that nanoporous organic cage incorporation is an effective strategy for tuning membrane microstructure and improving gas separation performance.

Band-Engineered Activation of Lattice Oxygen in In2O3 via Nitrogen Doping for Advanced Gas Sensing

Yumei Zhang,Yunqi Song,Yujie Tang,Xueni Ma,Yao Yao

The reliance of conventional gas sensing on surface-adsorbed oxygen limits both performance and mechanistic understanding. This work breaks from this paradigm by establishing lattice oxygen as an intrinsic reactive species in the sensing process. Herein, we developed a one-step solvothermal synthesis where benzimidazole serves as a dual-function agent: its weak coordination acts as a structural director to steer the formation of a square-shaped In2O3 architecture, while its in-situ released nitrogen atoms incorporate into the lattice. This synergistic design not only tailors the electronic structure but, more pivotally, enhances the reactivity of lattice oxygen to promote its efficient participation in gas-sensing reactions. The optimized sensor achieves exceptional ethanol-sensing performance, such as a high response of 715 toward 200 ppm ethanol, representing an 8.5-fold enhancement over pristine In2O3, along with fast response/recovery (2 s/24 s), excellent selectivity, and outstanding long-term stability. This work demonstrates that this synergistic doping strategy for enhancing lattice oxygen activity provides a distinct and effective pathway to advanced metal-oxide sensors.

Overlooked Solid Electrolyte Interphase Destabilization by Oxygen Gas Crossover in High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lifan Wang,Junlan Fang,Siheng Niu,Yiheng Wu,Min Chen,Cong Zhong,Zhengping Zuo,Xindong Wang,Xuefeng Wang,Chun Zhan,Jun Lu

The pursuit of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through high-capacity cathodes (e.g., Ni-rich oxides, lithium-rich manganese oxides) is inevitably accompanied by lattice oxygen release and gas evolution, yet the systemic impacts of oxygen crossover in full-cell configurations remain underexplored. This study investigates how oxygen gas permeation across separators triggers capacity degradation in LIBs. By regulating separator permeability and employing differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), we quantify oxygen transport pathways and their correlation with interfacial instability. Combined with cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we reveal that cathode-derived oxygen penetrates separators, attacking the anode to exacerbate heterogeneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth and mechanical destabilization. Continuous SEI fracture-reconstruction during cycling accelerates active lithium depletion and capacity fading. Employing low-permeability separators can effectively mitigate oxygen crossover and double the cycle life through stabilization of the anode interface. These findings establish oxygen gas crossover as one of the critical yet overlooked degradation vectors, bridging the knowledge gap between cathode oxygen release and anode failure mechanisms.

SnO2 hollow nanospheres gas sensor for highly sensitive detection of lithium-ion battery electrolyte (DMC)

Yueyue Sun,Chaoqi Zhu,Chaofan Ma,Jiahong Tang,Dawen Zeng

SnO 2 hollow nanospheres sensor was synthesized for DMC detection. • The sensor shows ultra-high response (80.1) to 10 ppm DMC at 120 °C. • LIB leakage simulation tests confirmed the feasibility of real time leak monitoring. • Performance is enhanced by unique hollow morphology and surface oxygen vacancies. The leakage of the electrolyte solution (DMC) in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an early sign of thermal runaway. Therefore, early detection of this phenomenon is of vital importance for safety monitoring. In this work, hollow-structured SnO 2 nanospheres were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method as a sensing material for DMC detection. The material was comprehensively characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, and BET analysis, confirming its unique hollow spherical morphology, high specific surface area, and abundant surface oxygen vacancies. Gas sensing evaluations demonstrated that the sensor based on this material exhibited outstanding performance at a relatively low optimal operating temperature of 120 °C, including a high response of 80.1 toward 10 ppm DMC, a fast response time of 16 s, excellent selectivity against common interfering gases, and remarkable long-term stability. The enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of the hollow structure and surface chemistry, which facilitate gas diffusion and surface reactions. This work provides a promising strategy for developing high-performance, low-cost metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors for early safety warning in LIB systems. Cyclic Temperature Modulation for Lightweight Gas-Mixture Classification via Feature Construction and Response-Phase Decomposition

Zhenxin Wu,Xin Yan,Hanyang Ji,Zhenyu Yuan,Fanli Meng

The recognition of gas mixtures typically demands extensive training data or models with strong representation power, which leads to challenges such as large model size, slow training speed, and the vulnerability to noise. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel feature construction (FC) via phase-wise aggregation aimed at constructing a gas-mixture recognition model with a simple structure. By leveraging dynamic temperature modulation and feature construction, features highly correlated with gas concentration are effectively built. A cyclic temperature modulation mode is developed for FC, enabling the decomposition of dynamic response signals into transient and steady-state response phases based on the temperature change curve. Both phases are visually analyzed, and the mapping relationship between static features and dynamic responses is thoroughly analyzed. In this study, we formulate the mixture recognition as a 48-class classification task over discretized acetone–toluene concentration combinations. By selecting the average value of the steady-state response phase as discriminative feature, the random forest algorithm achieves a recognition accuracy of 97.92% for gas mixtures, along with rapid training time and enhanced noise robustness. This cost-effective, noise robustness, and lightweight identification model holds considerable promise for application in the domain of portable device integration.

Janus composite membranes for suppressing thermal wetting in membrane distillation of flue gas desulfurization wastewater

Xinxin Lin,Qiaoling Ye,Binbin Li,Huiyi Cai,Caiyi Fan,Zhongsen Yan

The PIP Janus membrane with crater-like structures boosted flux to 72 LMH at 70 °C. • The dense PIP layer decoupled surface scaling from pore wetting to stop salt leakage. • Interfacial polymerization surface modification turned internal wetting into surface fouling. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) treatment of flue gas desulfurization wastewater (FGDW), but its industrial application is hindered by membrane wetting induced by the combined effects of inorganic scaling and thermal stress. In this study, Janus composite membranes were fabricated on PTFE substrates via interfacial polymerization (IP) to improve wetting resistance. Two polyamide barriers were constructed using piperazine (PIP) and m -phenylenediamine (MPDA). The pristine PTFE membrane exhibited a critical failure at 70 °C, where accelerated gypsum crystallization promoted crystal intrusion into membrane pores, leading to rapid wetting. In contrast, the IP-modified membranes significantly enhanced MD stability. Notably, the PIP@PTFE membrane formed a crater-like nanostructure and exhibited a high initial flux (∼72 L m −2  h −1 at 70 °C). The flux enhancement may be associated with favorable surface morphology and interfacial transport characteristics. Moreover, its dense polyamide layer confined gypsum crystallization to the membrane surface, maintaining excellent permeate quality (<200 μS cm −1 ) despite severe scaling and preventing the massive saline breakthrough observed in pristine membranes. These results demonstrate that PIP-based interfacial polymerization effectively suppresses thermally induced wetting, maintains permeate quality, and improves short-term wetting resistance under severe thermal-scaling conditions of MD for hypersaline wastewater treatment. A SnTe/In2S3 heterojunction gas sensor with ppb-level detection of NO2 at room temperature

Baoyu Huang,Haochen Zhang,Zhipeng Guan,Shupeng Sun,Yuwei Shan,Wencheng Ma,Nan Wang,Lingchu Huang,Xiaogan Li

NO 2 is an important component of air pollution and can have a significant impact on the environment and human respiratory health. Therefore, the requirement for real-time detection of low-concentration NO 2 from various emission sources drives the development of a specialized gas sensor. In this work, a heterojunction material based on bulk SnTe and In 2 S 3 nanosheets was developed, which can reach the ppb-level detection of NO 2 at room temperature. The sensor based on SnTe/In 2 S 3 exhibits better response (5.56) and a faster response time (58 s) for 1 ppm of NO 2 compared to the original SnTe-based sensor with the response of 1.11 and the response time of 204 s and reaches the detection limit of 75 ppb. The heterojunction sensor exhibits not only enhanced response and low detection limit but also performs improved selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The comprehensive performance enhancements result from both the promoted charge transfer due to the SnTe/In 2 S 3 heterojunction and abundant surface-adsorbed oxygen. The sensing mechanisms were studied through the use of in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Fabrication of high-performance gas separation membranes via fluorenyl-induced and thermal rearrangement-enhanced microporosity

Chengyun Gao,Yifan Guo,Jiayou Liao,Xianjie Meng,Yong Wang,Jiwei Ma,Zepeng Ju,Jinping Li

To overcome the intrinsic permeability–selectivity trade-off of polymeric gas separation membranes, a synergistic strategy was developed that integrates the fluorenyl-induced intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) effect with thermal rearrangement (TR)-enhanced structural evolution. A fluorene-containing diamine, 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl) fluorene (FDA), and three o-hydroxyl-containing diamines with distinct bridging architectures — 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (6FAP), 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (APA), and 3,3′-dihydroxybenzidine (HAB) — were incorporated into a 6FDA (4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride)-based polyimide backbone, followed by thermal rearrangement. Combining microstructural characterization and molecular dynamics simulations, the study revealed that contorted fluorenyl units effectively suppressed dense chain packing and generated a pre-existing microporous framework, while the incorporation of 6FAP promoted micropore interconnection and stabilization during thermal rearrangement. Consequently, the optimized TR membrane with a 6FAP-to-FDA ratio of 4:6 exhibited a CO 2 permeability of 432.2 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 77.2, representing an approximately 6.4-fold increase in permeability and a 1.6-fold increase in selectivity over the PI membrane without o-hydroxyl-containing diamines. Notably, the membrane also exhibited desirable mechanical properties, including a high tensile strength (>35 MPa) and good flexibility. Furthermore, it demonstrated reliable mixed-gas separation capability and long-term operational stability.

Synthesis of Soluble and Highly Transparent Homopolyimides for Gas Separation by Molecular Design and Simulation

Chao Shan,Jing Ni,Jinyun Lyu,Yanqian Liu,Chanjuan Liu,Xiaohua Huang

A novel diamine monomer, 4-(4-(2,6-bis(4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl)pyridyl)phenyl)morpholine (AOPPM), featuring non-coplanar morpholine groups, oxyether linkages, and pyridine heterocycles, was successfully designed and synthesized. A series of polyimides were obtained via one-step homopolycondensation of AOPPM with four different dianhydrides. The resulting mopPIs exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents, including NMP, DMAc, CH 2 Cl 2 , and CHCl 3 . Meanwhile, the mopPIs demonstrated high thermal performance ( T g = 232°C–328°C) and excellent thermal stability ( T 5% = 419°C–464°C and T 10% = 460°C–520°C). They also exhibited good optical transparency ( λ cutoff = 352–393 nm, λ 80% = 414–478 nm) and moderate hydrophobicity ( θ = 82°–88°). The fractional free volume and gas adsorption properties were simulated using Materials Studio 2019, and the simulated results were consistent with the experimentally observed gas separation performance. The mopPI-1 membrane also exhibited excellent gas separation performance, particularly for CO 2 /N 2 (up to 10.33), O 2 /N 2 (up to 2.48), and He/N 2 (up to 20.62) gas pairs, approaching the 1991 Robeson upper bound. Graphical A new diamine monomer containing ether bonds, morpholine groups and pyridine heterocycles was synthesized by molecular design, and four new morpholinyl polyimides were prepared from it. The polyimides exhibit good solubility, hydrophobicity, thermal properties, mechanical properties, excellent optical transparency, and efficient gas separation performance. The reliability of the experimental data was further confirmed through molecular dynamics simulation, including free volume and gas adsorption simulation.

Wireless Gas Sensors Based on Au Nanocluster-Sensitized SnO2 Nanosheets for CO-Resistant Hydrogen Detection

Bingxi Feng,Zizheng Wang,Yuan Yao,Yonghui Deng,Jing Wei

Noble metal nanosensitizers such as Pt and Pd are widely employed to enhance the H 2 sensing performance of semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors owing to their superior capability for H 2 adsorption and dissociation; however, they exhibit poor resistance to CO, a gas that commonly coexists with H 2 , leading to cross-response and false alarms in real-world application scenarios. In this work, we design a wireless gas sensor based on Au nanocluster-functionalized SnO 2 nanosheets. The sensor exhibits exceptional sensitivity (43.2 ppm -1 ), a low detection limit (100 ppb), rapid response time (11   s), excellent selectivity, and strong anti-interference capability against CO. Notably, owing to their ultra-small particle size and high catalytic activity, the Au nanocluster-functionalized SnO 2 nanosheets show a response 51.1 and 1.6 times higher than that of pristine SnO 2 and conventional Au nanoparticle-functionalized SnO 2 nanosheets. Moreover, when CO at a concentration 60 times higher than H 2 is introduced into the H 2 stream, the sensor response changes by only 7.8%. Furthermore, a handheld detector is developed for hydrogen leak detection and early warning. This work presents an alternative strategy for the fabrication of high-performance H 2 sensors with superior CO resistance by employing gold nanoclusters as a sensitizer in place of conventional Pd-based materials.

Rh@ZIF-67 nanoparticles for 1-octen-3-ol gas sensor working at room temperature

Faruk Omar,Dian Ding,Zhuo Chen,Zhihua Zhao

Selective room-temperature detection of 1-octen-3-ol, a representative fungal volatile organic compound (VOC) associated with food spoilage, remains challenging due to limited adsorption–activation efficiency in conventional sensing materials. Herein, pristine Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and Rhodium (Rh)-decorated ZIF-67 (Rh@ZIF-67) were developed as chemiresistive sensing materials via a mild solution-based strategy, achieving controlled Rh loadings (0.4–0.6%) while preserving the polyhedral ZIF-67 framework. The crystal structure, surface chemical states, porosity, and morphology were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM/EDS), confirming that the ZIF-67 framework was preserved and Rh species were successfully anchored on the porous host. At room temperature (25°C), the optimized 0.5%Rh@ZIF-67 sensor exhibits a stable concentration-dependent response over 5–50 ppm, delivering a response of 2.41 at 50 ppm—approximately 15.1 times higher than pristine ZIF-67 (0.16) with response and recovery times of 90 s and 119 s, respectively. The sensor further demonstrates good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability over 25 days. Humidity evaluation (30–90%) Relative Humidity (RH) indicates moderate response attenuation attributed to competitive adsorption of water molecules. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to synergistic adsorption enrichment from porous ZIF-67 combined with Rh-induced catalytic and electronic sensitization, enabling efficient resistance modulation under ambient conditions. This work provides a promising strategy for low-power, selective monitoring of spoilage-related VOC biomarkers in practical storage environments.
