Glyphosate was found for the first time to inhibit the catalytic activity of MoS2 nanosheets, which could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine by H2O2 to produce a colorimetric reaction. In the presence of glyphosate,
the absorbance and blue color of the system was decreased. Therefore, a simple and sensitive colorimetric sensing method for glyphosate based on the peroxidase mimetic activity of MoS2 nanosheets was developed. A linear relationship between the absorbance change and concentration
of glyphosate was observed over the range of 0.4—2.0 μg/mL (R
2 = 0.993) with a detection limit (3Ω/S) of 0.087 μg/mL. The colorimetric sensing method was simple, rapid, specific and sensitive, and the detection limit of 0.087 μg/mL is lower than the maximum
contaminant level of glyphosate in drinking water set by the Environment Protection Agency of USA and World Health Organization. This method was applied to detect glyphosate in environmental water samples with satisfactory results.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) has been an attractive target for investigations in the fields of catalysis, sensing, energy storage, electronics, and optoelectronics. However, its potential application in the important area of environmental cleanup has not yet been effectively explored. With an intrinsically sulfur-rich characteristic and unique 2D structure, MoS 2 should be capable of mercury capture and removal. However, successful attempts to apply MoS 2 to mercury removal are quite rare, presumably because the vast majority of sulfur atoms are located inside the bulk of MoS 2 and are therefore inaccessible for mercury ions. Here, the first experimental evidence that MoS 2 nanosheets with widened interlayer spacing are capable of mercury capture, with an extremely high mercury uptake capacity closely matching the theoretically predicted value (2506 mg g −1 ) and the largest distribution coefficient value (3.53 × 10 8 mL g −1 ) is provided. Remarkably, a single treatment of industrial wastewater (polyvinyl chloride industry) with this modified MoS 2 could efficiently reduce the mercury concentration (126 p.p.b.) below U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits for drinking water standards. The findings open up the possibility of expanding the applications of transition metal dichalcogenides in environmental remediation.

Graphical Pass the Mo : A 3 D sandwich of mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT was fabricated using a facile mechanochemistry method combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach. The material exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution owing to the sandwich-like heterojunction structure and Ti 3+ doping. A novel 3 D mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT sandwich-like nanosheet was successfully fabricated using a facile mechanochemical process combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach, followed by mild calcination (350 °C) under an argon atmosphere. The MBT/MoS 2 /MBT exhibits a 3 D sandwich-like nanosheet structure and heterojunctions are formed at the interfaces between MoS 2 and black TiO 2 . The significantly narrowed band gap of MBT/MoS 2 /MBT is attributed to the introduction of MoS 2 and the formed Ti 3+ species in the frameworks. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation rate of methyl orange and the hydrogen production rate are as high as 89.86 % and 0.56 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. The introduction of MoS 2 and Ti 3+ in the frameworks favors the visible-light absorption and the separation of photogenerated charges, and the 3 D sandwich-like heterojunction structure facilitates the transfer of photogenerated charges.

A novel (CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe)-sensitized TiO 2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) photoelectrode has been prepared by electrodeposite, successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) coupled with hydrothermal method . When a ZnS layer was added on the top of CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 , a notable red-shift and high absorption was observed in the visible light region. The photocurrent density (mA/cm 2 ) systematically increases from TiO 2 NTAs (0.43), CdTe/TiO 2 (1.09), MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (1.80), CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (2.40), to ZnS/CdS-Mn/MoS 2 /CdTe/TiO 2 (3.41) under visible light irradiation, due to the type-II semiconductor heterostructures comprising multiple components with a staggered band offset. Such a heterostructure possesses an enhanced photocatalytic performance towards degradation of organic contaminant, e.g. P-Nitrophenol (PNP) and Rhodamine B (RhB) .

Combining photothermal therapy (PTT) with clinical technology to kill cancer via overcoming the low tumor targeting and poor therapy efficiency has great potential in basic and clinical researches. A brand-new MoS 2 nanostructure is designed and fabricated, i.e., layered MoS 2 hollow spheres (LMHSs) with strong absorption in near-infrared region (NIR) and high photothermal conversion efficiency via a simple and fast chemical aerosol flow method. Owing to curving layered hollow spherical structure, the as-prepared LMHSs exhibit unique electronic properties comparing with MoS 2 nanosheets. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate their high photothermal ablation of cell and tumor elimination rate by single NIR light irradiation. Systematic acute toxicity study indicates that these LMHSs have negligible toxic effects to normal tissues and blood. Remarkably, minimally invasive interventional techniques are introduced to improve tumor targeting of PTT agents for the first time. To explore PTT efficiency on orthotopic transplantation tumors, New Zealand white rabbits with VX 2 tumor in liver are used as animal models. The effective elimination of tumors is successfully realized by PTT under the guidance of digital subtraction angiography, computed tomography, and thermal imaging, which provides a new way for tumor-targeting delivery and cancer theranostic application.

Cost-effective materials for electrocatalytic water splitting are key to renewable energy research. In this work, MoS 2 /sulfur and nitrogen co-doped reduced graphene oxide (SNG) nanocomposite was produced via a two-step hydrothermal process. The formation of nanocomposite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that the MoS 2 /SNG nanocomposite exhibits much higher catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) relative to MoS 2 and MoS 2 /RGO catalysts, as manifested by much larger cathodic current density with smaller overpotential of −120 mV and lower Tafel slope of 45 mV dec −1 . It is believed that the outstanding performance is attributed to the high electronic conductivity of SNG for fast charge transport. This study highlights the significance of the strong electronic coupling effect between the MoS 2 and SNG in the enhancement of HER electrocatalytic activity .

A highly active and stable catalyst for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) was developed based on the in situ formation of MoS2 on nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (MoS2/NMC). N-Doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) was prepared using urea and glucose as precursors and silica nanospheres as templates for achieving mesoporous structures via an in situ self-assembly process. Taking advantage of its high specific surface area and its uniform and adjustable pore size, MMC provides a favourable microenvironment for deposit of highly dispersed MoS2. It was demonstrated that the resulting MoS2/NMC catalysts exhibited an excellent catalytic activity and recycling stability in HDS of thiophene. Pore size and N content of NMC support can be adjusted by the size of the silica template and the amount of urea. The as-prepared 30MoS2/NMC-10 catalyst achieved a compete conversion of thiophene, indicating that an appropriate amount of N content in carbon support can enhance HDS activity. This simple and versatile method also can be extended to cover many kinds of other supported catalysts for broad applications in many other catalytic reactions in the future.

A temperature-responsive, recyclable nanocatalyst was fabricated by composting the exfoliated molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets with poly ( N -isopropylacry lamide) (PNIPAM). The structure and morphology of MoS 2 /PNIPAM nanocatalyst was fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The temperature-responsive properties of the MoS 2 /PNIPAM nanocatalyst were confirmed by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Ultraviolet–visible ((UV–vis)) absorption spectroscopy. The catalytic activities of the MoS 2 /PNIPAM nanocatalyst were studied using the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) as the model reaction. Results showed that the catalytic activity of the MoS 2 /PNIPAM nanocatalyst could be regulated by temperature. Furthermore, when the temperature went higher than the low critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, the MoS 2 /PNIPAM nanocatalyst tended to aggregated to form bulk materials from homogeneous suspension.

A CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode with a double-layer core–shell structure was prepared using a simple electrodeposition–in situ sulfurization method on a Mo substrate. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared electrodes was evaluated using a photoelectrochemical H2-generation experiment. The photocurrent and photon–electron conversion efficiency of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode were nearly double those of a CdS photoanode prepared on FTO glass. The high activity of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode was due to the higher separation efficiency of carriers caused by the formed CdS–MoS2 Janus heterojunction structure, which made directional transmission and electron–hole separation possible. Our experiments show that, in addition to being a good co-catalyst in powder material for photocatalytic hydrogen production, MoS2 can also be used as an electron acceptor layer to enhance electron–hole separation.

Reasonable design and preparation of effective interface engineering to accelerate charge transfer is the key to achieve the improvement of heterojunction photocatalysts. In this study, a Ti 3 C 2 -MoS 2 -ZnIn 2 S 4 (TMZ) heterojunction was designed and successfully synthesized by sequentially growing MoS 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 layered structures on highly conductive Ti 3 C 2 using a two-step hydrothermal method. This configuration effectively separated photogenerated carrier, thereby improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production. The effects of the amount of Ti 3 C 2 -MoS 2 on the microstructure, morphology, optical properties and photocatalytic H 2 production of TMZ heterojunctions were investigated. Results demonstrated that Ti 3 C 2 , MoS 2 , and ZnIn 2 S 4 intricately interpenetrated to form a tightly bound TMZ heterojunction with a well-defined heterojunctions interface. This interface is beneficial for the separation of photogenerated carriers, thereby boosting the photocatalytic performance. The dynamic process of carrier separation was investigated in detail using photocurrent measurements, EIS Nyquist plots, photoluminescence, and fluorescence lifetime analysis. Additionally, compared to pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 , the absorption edge of TMZ sample exhibited a redshift, indicating an expanded absorption range in the visible spectrum. Finally, the mechanism by which TMZ enhances the efficiency of photocatalytic H 2 production is thoroughly analyzed.

The risks associated with dye wastewater to the ecological environment are becoming increasingly significant. The efficient utilization and effective protection of water resources have become a persistent challenge. Employing coupling technologies to enhance the wastewater treatment process is an effective strategy for achieving sustainable water resource utilization. Herein, composite catalysts with iron-based metal-organic frameworks loaded with molybdenum disulfide (Fe-MOF@MoS₂) were prepared by a hydrothermal approach. The Fe-MOF@MoS 2 composite catalysts demonstrated superior degradation efficiencies towards various organic dyes like methylene blue, rhodamine B, and Congo red, especially in conditions of low hydrogen peroxide concentration and ultrasonic vibration. Results indicated that after 30 minutes of piezoelectric-Fenton-like treatment, the removal efficiency of the above organic dyes exceeded 90 %. The piezoelectric effect led to efficient cyclic conversion of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ions, while the inclusion of MoS 2 enhanced H 2 O 2 activation efficiency. Moreover, the Fe-MOF@MoS 2 catalyst displayed remarkable recycling capabilities, retaining 90 % of its initial catalytic activity even after six degradation cycles. Thus, the development of composite catalysts with combined piezoelectric and Fenton-like functions holds great promise for improving organic dye wastewater treatment and safeguarding environmental and water resources.

Sulfamethazine (SMT), a sulfonamide antibiotic, is widely present in medical wastewater and is one kind of refractory organic pollutants that endanger the water environment. An efficient and environmentally friendly degradation method is crucial for treating antibiotic wastewater. Based on the strong activation capability of transition metal ions for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and highly affinity of MoS 2 towards PMS, the decoration of MoS 2 with transition metal ions would be an effective activation of PMS for degradation of organic pollutants. In this work, Co@MoS 2 was synthesized by hydrothermal method and used as catalyst for the degradation of SMT with PMS. Almost 100 % of sulfamethazine (SMT) was removed within 10 min. The EPR and quenching experimental results suggested that 1 O 2 was the main active species for SMT degradation in the Co@MoS 2 /PMS system. The accelerated valence cycle between Co 2+ and Co 3+ was the key factor to PMS activation and SMT degradation. Further, the Co@MoS 2 /PMS system showed good applicability to different pollutants, excellent reusability for SMT removal. Therefore, the results demonstrated that the present study process was a promising strategy for antibiotic removal.
