Outstanding discharge energy density and efficiency of the bilayer nanocomposite films with BaTiO3-dispersed PVDF polymer and polyetherimide layer

Bin Zhang,Xiao-ming Chen,Wen-wen Wu,Amir Khesro,Peng Liu,Minmin Mao,Kaixin Song,Rong Sun,Dawei Wang

Dielectric polymer nanocomposite films have been widely studied because of their high polarization and electric breakdown strength, leading to high discharge energy density (U d ). However, nanocomposites with high U d often show low discharge energy efficiency (η). In order to achieve both high U d and η simultaneously, a series of novel bilayer polymer nanocomposite films composed of pure polyetherimide (PEI) layer and BaTiO 3 -dispersed poly(1,1-difluoroethylene) (BT/PVDF) layer were prepared by hot-pressing method in this work. The bilayer composites exhibit high η > 84% at 600 MV⋅m −1 , which are much larger than most reported values (η < 70%). Specially, the highest η of 84.48% and U d of 8 J·cm −3 at 600 MV·m −1 were obtained for the bilayer films composed of PEI and 3 vol% BT/PVDF layers, which is promising for pulsed power applications.

Multifunctional PVDF/CeO2@PDA nanofiber textiles with piezoelectric and piezo-phototronic properties for self-powered piezoelectric sensor and photodetector

Shuhong Huang,Xiaohui Zhao,Chenlong Hao,Zhixin Ma,Hui Wang,Aijia Zhang,Wanzhihan Zhang,Ling Li,Wenming Zhang

In recent years, multifunctional sensors have attracted significant attention due to their ability to detect different types of signals. However, it still remains a challenge to develop flexible materials with multiple sensing functions. Herein, we propose a strategy to fabricate multifunctional flexible textiles (PCP) that can apply piezoelectric and piezo-phototronic effects to self-powered piezoelectric sensor and photodetector (PD) by utilizing the synergistic effect of polydopamine-coated cerium oxide (CeO 2 @PDA) nanoparticles and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The CeO 2 @PDA nanoparticles served as local nucleating agents and photosensitizers for the PVDF, enhancing the polar crystalline phase and inducing piezoelectric effect, semiconductor, and optical process coupling in PCP textiles. The piezoelectric sensors consisting of PCP textiles produced extremely high sensitivity (1–10 kPa: 1.27 V/kPa; 10–50 kPa: 0.085 V/kPa; 50–100 kPa: 0.02 V/kPa) and significant electrical output (25.5 V and 0.37 μA). Besides, the piezoelectric sensor had extensive applications including pulse wave measurement, limb motion detection, and active voice recognition. It's especially noteworthy that the PD based on PCP textiles is sensitive for the detecting of sunlight illumination as confirmed by response time (t On  = 2 s and t Off  = 4.6 s). Meanwhile, the fabricated self-powered PD showed significant improvement in output current, confirming the realization of the piezo-phototronic effect in PCP textiles. In this work, the low-cost and high-efficiency multifunctional sensing materials were successfully prepared, providing a novel approach for the next generation of self-powered piezoelectric sensors and photodetectors.

SnO2 induced electrostatic polarization PVDF composite nanofibers for efficient energy harvesting and self-powered wireless monitoring /motion recognition systems

Bozhi Wu,Yongqiang Yang,Lei Wang,Hui Xu,Yuheng Huang,Jiahong Kang,Yuwei Xiong,Kuibo Yin,Meng Nie,Litao Sun

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things and flexible electronics, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) have demonstrated a wide range of potential applications in wearable devices. However, there are still challenges in developing high-performance PENGs, which affect their potential applications in more scenarios. Herein, we propose a SnO 2 -PVDF (SP)-PENG based on low-cost and environment-friendly SnO 2 nanoparticles modulated via electrospinning, achieving outstanding piezoelectric output performance. The piezoelectric output of SP-PENG is up to 49.2 V, which is 11.7 times higher than that of pure PVDF-PENG. From the theoretical perspective, the enhanced electrostatic polarization is achieved by the strengthened local electric field due to the presence of low-resistivity SnO 2 in the SP fibers. The mechanism of enhanced electrostatic polarization is also declared by COMSOL simulation. Moreover, the SP-PENG exhibits excellent durability (41,600 cycles) and long-term stability (8 months). A self-powered wireless sensing-monitoring system is realized by combining SP-PENG with circuit design. The motion recognition system is accomplished by integrating an assistance of a 1D CNN-LSTM joint learning model, which is verified by an alphabetic handwriting recognition with a classification accuracy up to 100 %. This study provides significant insights for enhancing the performance of PENGs and offers valuable guidance for exploring the application of PENGs in flexible electronics and artificial intelligence.

Tuning the MOF-derived Fe fillers and crystal structure of PVDF composites for enhancement of their energy storage density

Tongguang Zhu,Hang Zhao,Na Zhang,Chuying Zhang,Jinbo Bai

Polymer-based capacitors are essential energy storage components in the electronic and electrical industries, which is benefit for their high power density and fast charge–discharge capabilities. However, the low energy density of polymer-based capacitors limits their miniaturization and intelligent applications. In this study, we present the novel poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites with exceptional energy storage performance at the submicron metal filler loadings. Guided by synergistically improving the dielectric constant and breakdown strength of polymer-based composites, metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Fe fillers and Press & Heat (P&H) cycles are mainly implemented. The polymer-based composites exhibit a superior dielectric constant of 15.3, while simultaneously maintain a high breakdown strength of 617.1 MV/m. The excellent energy density of 28.9 J/cm 3 is obtained at the ultralow filler loading of 0.2 wt%. Synergistic tuning the loading content of MOF-derived Fe and optimizing the P&H cycles not only leads to a novel composite dielectrics with outstanding energy storage properties, but also presents a new strategy for exploring high-performance capacitive polymer composites.

Surface Modification of PVDF and PTFE Hollow Fiber Membranes for Enhanced Nitrogen Removal in a Membrane-Aerated Biofilm Reactor

Wenfeng Zai,Yangman Chen,Qingdong Qin,Xiangkun Li,Dezhao Liu

HighlightsPlasma-grafting acrylic acid composite membrane for MABR was prepared.Higher O2transfer rate and better hydrophilicity for modified membranes than pristine.Modified PVDF membrane demonstrated superior nitrogen removal during startup.Activity of denitrifying bacteria was enhanced in the modified PVDF MABR.AbstractMicroporous membranes such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) often exhibit suboptimal hydrophilicity and microbial adhesion, which impede effective nitrogen removal in membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs), particularly during initial operational phases. To address this issue, the present study introduced acrylic acid (AA) following plasma treatment (P) to enhance membrane performance, thereby engineering a novel composite material optimized for MABR applications. Four MABRs—Reactor with pristine PVDF membrane (R-PVDF), Reactor with composite PVDF membrane (R-PVDF-P-AA), Reactor with pristine PTFE membrane (R-PTFE), and Reactor with composite PTFE membrane (R-PTFE-P-AA)—were evaluated. The modified membranes displayed enhanced roughness and hydrophilicity, which improved biocompatibility and variably increased the oxygen transfer efficiency. Notably, the R-PVDF-P-AA configuration showed a significant enhancement in the removal rates of NH4+-N and total nitrogen (TN), achieving 78.5% and 61.3%, respectively, which was markedly higher than those observed with the original membranes. In contrast, the modified R-PTFE-P-AA exhibited lower removal efficiencies, with NH4+-N and TN reductions of approximately 60.0% and 49.5%. Detailed microbial community analysis revealed that the R-PVDF-P-AA membrane supported robust commensalism between ammonia-oxidizing and denitrifying bacteria, underpinning the improved performance. These findings highlight the critical role of surface chemistry and microbial ecology in optimizing the function of MABRs.

Synergistic coupling among Mg2B2O5, polycarbonate and N,N-dimethylformamide enhances the electrochemical performance of PVDF-HFP-based solid electrolyte

Yutong Jing,Qiang Lv,Yujia Chen,Bo Wang,Bochen Wu,Cheng Li,Shengbo Yang,Zhipeng He,Dianlong Wang,Huakun Liu,Shixue Dou

Polymer solid electrolytes (SPEs) based on the [solvate-Li + ] complex structure have promising prospects in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to their unique ion transport mechanism. However, the solvation structure may compromise the mechanical performance and safety, hindering practical application of SPEs. In this work, a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is designed through the organic-inorganic synergistic interaction among N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), polycarbonate (PC), and Mg 2 B 2 O 5 in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). Flame-retardant Mg 2 B 2 O 5 nanowires provide non-flammability to the prepared CSEs, and the addition of PC improves the dispersion of Mg 2 B 2 O 5 nanowires. Simultaneously, the organic-inorganic synergistic action of PC plasticizer and Mg 2 B 2 O 5 nanowires promotes the dissociation degree of LiTFSI and reduces the crystallinity of PVDF-HFP, enabling rapid Li ion transport. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations confirm the coordination between Mg atoms in Mg 2 B 2 O 5 and N atoms in DMF, which exhibits Lewis base-like behavior attacking adjacent C–F and C–H bonds in PVDF-HFP while inducing dehydrofluorination of PVDF-HFP. Based on the synergistic coupling of Mg 2 B 2 O 5 , PC, and DMF in the PVDF-HFP matrix, the prepared CSE exhibits superior ion conductivity (9.78×10 −4 S cm −1 ). The assembled Li symmetric cells cycle stably for 3900 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm −2 without short circuit. The LFP||Li cells assembled with PDL-Mg 2 B 2 O 5 /PC CSEs show excellent rate capability and cycling performance, with a capacity retention of 83.3% after 1000 cycles at 0.5 C. This work provides a novel approach for the practical application of organic-inorganic synergistic CSEs in LMBs.

In Situ Engineered Plastic–Crystal Interlayers Enable Li-Rich Cathodes in PVDF-HFP-Based All-Solid-State Polymer Batteries

Fei Zhou,Jinwei Tan,Feixiang Wang,Meiling Sun

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) employing Li-rich layered oxide (LLO) cathodes are regarded as promising next-generation energy storage systems owing to their outstanding energy density and intrinsic safety. Polymer-in-salt solid electrolytes (PISSEs) offer advantages such as high room-temperature ionic conductivity, enhanced Li anode interfacial compatibility, and low processing costs; however, their practical deployment is hindered by poor oxidative stability especially under high-voltage conditions. In this study, we report the rational design of a bilayer electrolyte architecture featuring an in situ solidified LiClO4-doped succinonitrile (LiClO4–SN) plastic–crystal interlayer between a Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2(LMNO) cathode and a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based PISSE. This PISSE/SN–LiClO4configuration exhibits a wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.7 V vs. Li+/Li and delivers a high ionic conductivity of 5.68 × 10−4S cm−1at 25 °C. The solidified LiClO4-SN layer serves as an effective physical barrier, shielding the PVDF-HFP matrix from direct interfacial contact with LMNO and thereby suppressing its oxidative decomposition at elevated potentials. As a result, the bilayer polymer-based cells with the LMNO cathode demonstrate an initial discharge capacity of ∼206 mAh g−1at 0.05 C and exhibit good cycling stability with 85.7% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.5 C under a high cut-off voltage of 4.6 V. This work not only provides a promising strategy to enhance the compatibility of PVDF-HFP-based electrolytes with high-voltage cathodes through the facile in situ solidification of plastic interlayers but also promotes the application of LMNO cathode material in high-energy ASSLBs.

Structure design and performance optimization of PVDF-CTFE nanofibrous composite nanofiltration membrane modified by C–Cl active site grafting

Wanzheng Ren,Jian Pan,Zhuoqun Li,Min Huang,Lilan Huang,Liqiang Gu,Hailin Cong

The substrate membrane plays a crucial role in determining the performance of composite nanofiltration membranes prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP). In this study, persistent hydrophilic modification of polyvinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene (PVDF-CTFE) was achieved by incorporating N-methylglucamine (N-MG) without altering the membrane's morphology or pore size. Moreover, thin-film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) nanofiltration membranes were prepared using the surfactant assembly regulated interfacial polymerization (SARIP) method with the modified PVDF-CTFE@N-MG nanofibrous membrane as the substrate. The effect of N-MG addition on the substrate membrane's hydrophilicity and the structure and performance of the polyamide (PA) separation layer was investigated. The results showed that the addition of N-MG significantly improved the hydrophilicity of the PVDF-CTFE nanofibrous membrane. The TFNC-5 membrane, prepared with the modified PVDF-CTFE@N-MG nanofibrous membrane as the substrate, exhibited permeability exceeding 13.5 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 for various dye solutions at 3 bar pressure, with rejection rates above 98 %. It also demonstrated excellent selective separation performance (separation factor for NaCl/Orange G reaching 97.38) and long-term operational stability. This work provides a method for the preparation of low-pressure, high-flux nanofiltration membranes, which is applicable to seawater desalination and dye wastewater treatment .

Stable and effective photo-Fenton catalysts of Fe-alginate/PVDF composite electrospun nanofibers for the removal of methylene blue

Feng Qian,Liu Jia,Liu Zhigang,Zhou Yuhong,Zhou Yuze,Dong Zhihui,Tang Dongyan

Wastewater containing organic pollutants has created serious environmental issues and severely threatened human health due to the industry’s rapid development. Fenton processes, among the most economical advanced oxidation methods, can efficiently decompose and completely mineralize organic pollutants. Fenton processes have been widely employed in wastewater treatment to remove organic dyes; however, their practical application is limited due to the secondary pollution of Fe sludge. This work used the electrospinning technique to create Fe-alginate/PVDF nanofibers with a mass ration of 1:0.3, followed by iron ion exchange (0.08 wt%) as a photo-Fenton catalyst. The catalytic degradation of 20 mg/L methylene blue revealed that Fe-alginate/PVDF nanofibers (10 mg) had remarkable photo-Fenton catalytic performance, degrading 97.24% of methylene blue within 40 min under optimized conditions (pH of 3, H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.20 mM). Additionally, the wetting property and the development of the Fe-alginate coordination structure prevented iron leaching and strengthened the Fe-alginate/PVDF nanofibers’ structure stability, thus limiting secondary pollution of wastewater during application. Moreover, Fe-alginate/PVDF nanofibers could effectively remove MB over a wide pH range of 3.0–9.0, applied to the majority industrial wastewater (neutral or slightly acidic pH conditions). This work provides a facile strategy to prepare stable and cost-effective heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts, demonstrating potential applications in industrial-scale wastewater treatment.

Enhancing safety and electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries with P/N-IL@NH2-UIO-66 functionalized PVDF separators

Hua Yu,Xuan Wang,Lijun Yang,Qirui Wu,Houming Shen,Geming Wang,Peng Fan

The development of high-performance separator materials has become crucial with the ever-increasing demands for enhanced safety and energy density of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. Here, a novel high-safety functionalized separator was prepared by synthesizing a composite material that encapsulates phosphorus‑nitrogen-containing ionic liquid (P/N-IL) within NH 2 -UIO-66-Zr metal-organic framework (MOF), and then combining this composite with a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) P/N-IL@NH 2 -UIO-66/PVDF separator. This functionalized P/N-IL@NH 2 -UIO-66/PVDF separator significantly improves the flame-retardant performance of NCM811 batteries, effectively mitigating the risks of electrolyte combustion and explosion. Meanwhile, the porous structure of P/N-IL@NH 2 -UIO-66 material optimizes the Li + transport pathways, resulting in an increase in the ionic conductivity of NCM811 battery o 3.1 × 10 −4  S/cm (compared to only 3.4 × 10 −6  S/cm for the pure PVDF separator). The Li + transference number is also elevated to 0.68. Moreover, after 600 cycles at a 1C current density, the capacity retention rate reaches as high as 71 %, with an average coulombic efficiency of 96 %, substantially enhancing the electrochemical performance and cycling stability of the battery. This work offers a novel technological pathway for the development of high-safety, high-performance lithium-ion batteries, as well as for the application of ionic liquids and MOFs.

Phosphorus-Anchored PVDF Polymer-Regulated Spherulite and Solvation Structure for Long-Cycling and Safe Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Kun Shi,Changsong Yu,Long Zhou,Zhangxian Chen,Zeheng Yang,Weixin Zhang

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based solid-state polymer electrolytes always suffer from their intrinsic flammability, limited Li + transfer, and the interfacial degradation induced by high-activity residual N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Herein, a 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DOPO)-anchored PVDF-based solid-state electrolyte is synthesized by a two-step reaction involving PVDF dehydrofluorination and subsequent phosphorus-hydrogen addition. The covalent immobilization of DOPO on PVDF polymers endows the electrolyte with high flame retardancy while inhibiting phosphorus-associated reactions with lithium anodes. The alteration in polymer crystallinity and polarity significantly increases the relative permittivity of electrolyte and leads to a densely-interconnected spherulite network, facilitating the homogeneous Li + distribution and rapid transport. Remarkably, the DOPO-anchored polymers are involved in Li + solvation at the expense of DMF molecules, which effectively suppresses DMF decomposition on electrode surfaces and promotes formation of a robust anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase. The resultant polymer electrolyte demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining over 2500 h in symmetric lithium cell (0.1 mA cm −2 ) and 850 cycles in LiFePO 4 /Li cells (0.5 C) with 94.27% capacity retention. Furthermore, it enables stable operation in high-voltage LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 /Li and practical pouch cells, while achieving high safety of batteries under abusive conditions. This work presents an innovative design in PVDF-based polymer electrolytes for safe and long-cycling solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Regulating the interfacial structure in percolating graphite nanoplate/PVDF composites via TiO2 as an interlayer towards meliorative dielectric performances

Jing Liu,Yanqing Zhang,Jian Zheng,Weiwei Li,Fanrong Kong,Yating Yang,Na Lin,Jing Cao,Xiaolong Chen,Fang Wang,Wenying Zhou

Polymer nanocomposites combining large dielectric permittivity ( ε′ ) but low loss along with high breakdown strength ( E b ) have garnered significant attention in the fields of electronic devices and power systems. To concurrently accomplish these desirable performances in pristine graphite nanoplates (GNP)/poly(vinylidene fluoride, PVDF) composites, the GNP were initially encased by a layer of anatase-type titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) shell, and then incorporated into PVDF to investigate the effect of TiO 2 interlayer on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites, specifically in relation to the thickness of the TiO 2 shell and the nanofiller concentration. The TiO 2 shell acts as a barrier layer prohibiting the electronic percolating, thus significantly reducing the dielectric loss and leakage conductivity of the GNP@TiO 2 /PVDF. Moreover, it not only alleviates the strong dielectric mismatch between GNP and PVDF, which restrains local electric field distortion, but also introduces charge traps, raising the energy barrier height for captured charge detrapping and preventing the growth of electric trees and subsequently promoting the E b . For example, the PVDF with 20 wt% of GNP@TiO 2 exhibited good comprehensive dielectric performances: ε′ of 50.63, loss factor of 0.071 (100 Hz) and E b of 7.89 kV/mm. Additionally, tailoring the TiO 2 ’s thickness can simultaneously modulate the overall dielectric parameters in the GNP@TiO 2 /PVDF. Theoretical fitting of experimental data via Havriliak-Negami equation uncovers the underlying polarization mechanism and the interlayer’s impact on charge migration. This work provides an efficient method for developing and producing polymeric nanodielectrics that simultaneously incorporate increased E b with high ε′ but low loss for potential use in power devices and microelectronic devices.
