A label-free electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor is developed to detect alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Ru (bpy) 3 2+ -doped silica nanoparticles (Ru–SiO 2 ) and gold nanoparticle-modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO@Au) are integrated to form an rGO@Au@Ru–SiO 2 composite. The composite is employed as a carrier for immobilizing the target antibody, and a label-free ECL immunosensor is constructed via antigen–antibody interaction. Owing to the numerous Ru (bpy) 3 2+ molecules in the Ru–SiO 2 , a high ECL signal is acquired. With excellent conductivity and a large surface area, the rGO@Au composite not only accelerates electron transfer but also improved the ECL signal and captures antibodies, thus enhancing ECL response and sensitivity. Moreover, boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) are used as rGO@Au@Ru–SiO 2 coreactants, achieving high ECL intensity. The proposed ECL system exhibits significant potential in bioanalysis , which is attributed to the excellent biocompatibility and good stability of BNQDs. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor has a linear range of 0.0001 ng mL −1 to 100 ng mL −1 and a limit of detection equal to 0.03 pg mL −1 (S/N = 3). The proposed technique is successfully applied in the susceptible detection of AFP in human serum. The recovery ranges from 99% to 100%, and the RSD is less than 2.8%. The constructed ECL immunosensor exhibits acceptable performance during actual application.

Mn-Ce mixed oxides-supported Ru nanoparticles (Ru/Mn X Ce 1 O Y ) with enhanced oxygen mobility and strong metal-support interaction were prepared and applied to the aerobic oxidation of 5 -hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5 -furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) without addition of any base additives. Oxygen and water were used as green oxidant and solvent, respectively. The catalysts were characterized in depth by XRD, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, UV–Vis DRS, XPS and TEM, to reveal materials properties from bulk to surface. The influence of Mn/Ce molar ratios in support materials and reaction parameters ( i.e. , HMF/Ru ratio, O 2 pressure, reaction temperature and time) was systematically studied and optimized. The reaction route and rate-determining step for oxidation of HMF to FDCA over the Ru/Mn X Ce 1 O Y catalysts were investigated by kinetic analysis. Well-dispersed metallic Ru nanoparticles with a mean size of 4.4 nm deposited on the support were found essential to activate and oxidize the HMF molecule. The Mn/Ce molar ratio was found to affect not only conversion of HMF but also distribution of products. The Ru/Mn 6 Ce 1 O Y catalyst demonstrated an exceptional yield (≥99%) of FDCA, which corresponds in our conditions to one of the best productivity (5.3 mol FDCA ·mol Ru −1 ·h −1 ) ever reported in literature. The superior activity of the Ru/Mn 6 Ce 1 O Y catalyst was mainly associated with (i) the strong metal-support interaction and (ii) the synergistic effect between manganese and cerium oxides. This catalyst showed the highest surface concentrations in Mn 4+ and Ce 3+ among the series, which, as a consequence, enhanced the availability and mobility of active oxygen species. This catalyst was shown resistant to deactivation during eight recycling uses thanks to a strong metal-support interaction between Ru nanoparticles and the Mn-Ce mixed oxide used as a support.

An efficient catalysis system composed of a Lewis–Brønsted acid mixture and Ru/C using N,N-dimethylformamide as a solvent was developed for the one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF) via the dehydration/hydrogenolysis sequence. The effects of various reaction parameters, such as solvent, catalyst type, catalyst loading, reaction pressure, temperature and time, on single fructose dehydration, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) hydrogenolysis and the one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-DMF were systematically investigated. The results showed that 2,5-DMF could be successfully produced with a yield as high as 66.3 mol% by using a one-pot method directly from fructose under the optimized reaction conditions, which is by far the highest yield ever reported for the production of 2,5-DMF from fructose through a one-pot strategy. The Ru/C catalyst could be reused at least three times with a slight decrease in 2,5-DMF yield.

NH3 synthesis from H2O + N2, H2 + N2 or H2O + H2 + N2 by dielectric barrier discharge combined with an Ru/Al2O3 catalyst is studied at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Additionally, the effects of reaction gas composition, energy density, and discharge frequency on NH3 yield and by-product formation are investigated. The results show that NH3 can be formed from reaction gases consisting of H2O and N2. The NH3 yield of the reaction gas containing H2 is much higher than that of the reaction gas consisting of H2O and N2. The presence of H2O has a promotion effect on NH3 synthesis from H2 and N2, especially for reaction gases with an H2 content less than 10%. The NH3 yield first increases and then decreases with an increase in the energy density. The maximum yield of 680 mg kW−1 h−1 occurs at the energy density of 1400 J L−1 and in the reaction gas of 0.14% H2O, 40% H2 and N2. The discharge frequency has a great effect on the NH3 yield, and maximum NH3 yield is obtained at the frequency of 13 kHz. Besides NH3, some by-products, such as N2O and NO2, are also formed with reaction gases containing H2O. However, their formation can be suppressed in the presence of H2, which is attributed to the reduction effect of H2 on the by-products.

The development of novel, simple, and convenient techniques for the fabrication of porous carbon materials with desirable properties, such as tunable pore structures and the presence of nitrogen functionalities, from renewable and abundant biomasses is required. We herein describe an in situ directing method for the preparation of a nitrogen-doped flower-like porous carbon (NFPC) employing arbitrarily shaped MgO from bio-derived glucosamine chloride (GAH). Experimental evidence demonstrated that the structure directing effect of the Mg(OH) 2 nanosheets formed in situ from MgO hydrolysis was key to this process, with the original MgO morphology being irrelevant. Furthermore, this method was applicable for a wide variety of biomass-derived carbon precursors. The resulting NFPC exhibited a high nitrogen content of ≤9 wt.%, and was employed as a support to anchor small Ru nanoparticles (average size = 2.7 nm). The resulting Ru/NFPC was highly active in heterogeneous hydrogenations of toluene and benzoic acid, which demonstrated the advantages of nitrogen doping in terms of boosting catalytic performance.

The development of anodic reactions with accelerated kinetics to replace the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to promote the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with high value-added production is of crucial importance in the field of electrocatalytic hydrogen production. In this paper, the thermodynamically favourable methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is combined with the HER for energy-efficient hydrogen production. The Ru nanoparticles supported on metal–organic framework nanolayers (Ru@Co MOLs) are synthesized via a gamma-ray irradiation-induced reduction reaction. The abundant defects within the composite facilitate uniform dispersion and strong anchoring of Ru. As a result, Ru@Co MOLs exhibit remarkable HER and MOR activity with an overpotential of 20 mV and 1.094 V at 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, in the presence of methanol, they only require a lower voltage of 1.182 V at 10 mA cm−2 in a two-electrode electrolyzer. This work presents a promising bifunctional catalyst for methanol oxidation with energy-efficient hydrogen production.

The design of efficient ammonia cracking catalysts is the key to developing ammonia as a hydrogen storage carrier. This paper investigated the role of Co–Al hydrotalcite carriers in ruthenium-based catalysts. Ru/Co–Al catalysts were prepared by mechanical milling, impregnation, and co-precipitation, and the catalytic activity and physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated, respectively. The catalysts prepared by the co-precipitation method exhibit the maximum specific surface area and metal dispersion due to the layered structure of LDH and the homogeneity of the co-precipitation method. In this study, it is concluded that the substitution of Ru during the co-precipitation preparation builds up strong metal-carrier interactions and generates a large number of oxygen vacancies. The catalyst prepared by the co-precipitation method exhibited a high H 2 generation rate (19.5 mmol·gcat −1 ·min −1 ) at GHSV = 30,000 ml·gcat −1 ·h −1 and 450 °C, and the performance remained stable after 50 h of reaction. This work provides a new idea for designing efficient Ru-based catalysts.

Solar-driven photo-thermal dry reforming of methane (DRM) is an environmentally friendly production route for high-value-added chemicals. However, the lack of thorough understanding of the mechanism for photo-thermal reaction has limited its further development. Here, we systematically investigated the mechanism of photo-thermal DRM reaction with the representative of Ru/CeO 2 catalyst. Through in situ DRIFTs and transient experiments, comprehensive investigation into the reaction steps and their reactive sites in the process of DRM reaction were conducted. Besides, the excitation and migration direction of photo-electron was determined by ISI-XPS experiments, and the change of surface defect structure induced by light was characterized by ISI-EPR experiments. Based on the above results, the photo-enhancement effect on each micro-reaction step was determined. This study provides a theoretical basis for the industrialization of photo-thermal DRM reaction and its development of catalysts.

Developing innovative, efficient, and economical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is critical but challenging, and biomimetic-designed hybrid catalysts stand out. In this work, the hierarchical N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs) anchored by ultra-small Ru nanoparticles (NPs) was achieved by covalent organic framework/metal organic framework (COF/MOF) template approach combined with electrospinning technology, which exhibits a unique and stable biomimetic “branch and leaf” morphology. This distinctive biomimetic architecture not only facilitates fast charge transfer and mass transport, but also exposes more active sites (Ru NPs, M-N x , and active N species). It is possible to remarkably reduce the Ru content without sacrificing ORR activity, thus ensuring cost-effectiveness. Specifically, the synthesized catalyst presents impressive limiting current density (J L = 6.15 mA cm −2 ), outstanding half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.85 V), high 4e − selectivity (H 2 O 2 yield <2 %) and distinguished durability (94.7 % current retention after 20 h) at low Ru loading, surpassing the state-of-art Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, the aqueous/solid-state ZABs assembled by Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs perform significantly better open-circuit voltage (1.48 V and 1.41 V), power density (175 mW cm −2 and 86.9 mW cm −2 ), specific capacity (810.2 mAh g Zn −1 and 720.2 mAh g Zn −1 ), and long-term cycling durability (> 300 h and 1000 min) than Pt/C-based counterparts. Intriguingly, Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs-based flexible ZABs demonstrate satisfactory foldability and mechanical stability. This study evidences the feasibility of Ru@FeZn-HNC/CNFs catalyst employed as air cathode of ZABs, and opens up a new avenue for the exploration of flexible wearable energy supply devices.

Cu 2+ serves as a significant biomarker in various physiological processes. This study presents the development of a novel Ru-UiO-TPEA functionalized metal-organic framework (MOFs) probe for Cu 2+ detection, employing both electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electrochemical (EC) methods. Employing a dual ligand-assisted energy transfer approach, we synthesized Ru-UiO with optimal ECL and EC properties by adjusting the synthesis ratio of biphenyldicarboxylic acid to Ru(dcbpy) 3 2+ . This was followed by its conjugation with N-(2-aminoethyl)-N, N′, N′-tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) ethane-1,2-diamine (AE-TPEA) to form the highly conjugated Ru-UiO-TPEA probe for Cu 2+ detection. As the Cu 2+ concentration increased, the probe exhibited a diminished ECL signal and an enhanced differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal. The dual-mode detection method enabled cross-validation of the ECL and EC signals, enhancing accuracy and effectively minimizing errors. The ECL and EC methods had detection limits of 0.26 nM (range: 1 nM to 10 μM) and 0.65 nM (range: 2 nM to 80 μM), respectively. Meanwhile, these two methods can effectively detect Cu 2+ in rat brain microdialysis fluid. Notably, the measured concentrations correlated well with those determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES), highlighting its potential in biological and clinical bioelectronic sensing applications.

The sluggish kinetics and inherent instability over the Ru/RuO 2 clusters are still enormous challenges in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer. Herein, we innovatively report synergistic modulation of dynamic electron modification and strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) to activate and stabilize bifunctional fluorine doped Ru/RuO 2 clusters anchored on carbon nanotube (CNT), thus achieving efficient and stable acidic overall water splitting. Theoretical and experimental studies found that surface metal-fluorine modification layer could dynamically regulate the interfacial electronic environment to stabilize and activate multiple active Ru species; and the SMSI between Ru/RuO 2 cluster and CNT maintains stable electronic environment for dynamic electron modification and avoids migrating or shedding of active species in acidic environment. Therefore, the PEM electrolyzer assembled with optimal F 5.5 -Ru/RuO 2 @CNT can operate stably for 100 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 , which is the first time that bifunctional Ru-based nanocatalysts applied to PEM device at a high current density.

The novel TiO 2 and Ni-MOF materials were synthesized and utilized for the detection of permethrin (PET). A highly sensitive solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was developed based on Ni-MOF@Ru(bpy) 3 2+ and Au NPs@TiO 2 . In this sensing platform, Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -Tripropyl Amine (TPrA) was used as a luminescent signal, Ni-MOF acted as a carrier to carry more luminescent reagents Ru(bpy) 3 2+ . Au NPs acted as promoters facilitated electron transport and TiO 2 could further enhance the luminescence intensity of the system by synergistical interaction with Au NPs. The possible mechanisms of signal amplification were investigated. The ECL intensity decreased significantly with increasing PET concentration, enabling the determination of PET amount through the observation of the change in ECL signal intensity (ΔI). Under optimal experimental conditions, the linear range of PET concentration from 1.0 × 10 −11 mol L −1 to 1.0 × 10 −6 mol L −1 , with a detection limit of 3.3 × 10 −12 mol L −1 (3S/N). This method was successfully applied to determine PET in various vegetable samples.
