Co single-atom catalyst on ordered macro–microporous structure as separator for Li-S battery

Wenhui Cao,Mengyu Liu,Kai Zhang,Shenghao Zhang,Caixia Li,Yonghong Wen,Qingliang Lv,Qin Wen,Lei Wang

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted significant attention due to their high theoretical energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness, which are considered one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices. However, the sluggish kinetics associated with sulfur oxidation–reduction reactions and the detrimental shuttle effect caused by lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) significantly impacts the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. In this work, Co single-atom catalyst (Co SAC -NC) on an ordered macro-microporous structure are designed, and the catalyst are coated onto 2325 separator. The ordered micro-microporous structure of Co SAC -NC enhances the interaction with LiPSs and provide reservoir for LiPSs. Secondly, the highly exposed Co-N x configuration active sites can effectively anchor LiPSs and promotes their rapid conversion. This work significantly improves the utilization efficiency of the cathode, resulting in an exceptionally low-capacity decay rate of just 0.043 % per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1 C.

Electrochemical PET recycling to formate through ethylene glycol oxidation on Ni–Co–S nanosheet arrays

Yi Ma,Luming Li,Jialing Tang,Zongkun Hu,Yong Zhang,Huan Ge,Ning Jian,Jun Zhao,Andreu Cabot,Junshan Li

Plastics have become an integral part of modern society due to their excellent mechanical properties, light weight, chemical stability and low cost. However, their continuous production and use worldwide have resulted in a major environmental problem. In this context, the green degradation and upcycling of waste plastics using electrochemical oxidation present a promising solution. To make this solution practical, the development of cost-effective catalysts optimized for this reaction is essential. In this study, we propose a new catalyst for the electrocatalytic reforming of ethylene glycol (EG) derived from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to formic acid. The catalyst comprises layered Ni–Co9S8 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) grown on nickel foam (NF) via the hydrothermal method. Under EG oxidation reaction (EGOR) conditions, the Ni–Co9S8 NSAs/NF catalyst achieves Faraday efficiencies (FEs) of up to 92%. Additionally, the direct use of commercial PET plastic powder hydrolysate still enables formate FEs to exceed 90%. These outstanding results are rationalized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations providing insights into the role of the different elements in the EGOR. Overall, this study demonstrates both a synthetic strategy for transition metal sulfides and an efficient and sustainable strategy for the upgraded recycling of PET plastics.

Elucidating the detoxification efficacy of Periplaneta americana delta glutathione S-transferase 1 (PaGSTd1) against organophosphates

Hong Sun,Xinyu Li,Xinyue Yuan,Zhen Tian,Yifan Li,Yalin Zhang,Jiyuan Liu

As an important class of detoxifying enzymes , glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are pivotal in decreasing insecticide toxicity to insects. Periplaneta americana GSTd1 (PaGSTd1) has been verified as a key enzyme in detoxifying pyrethroid insecticides, but its detoxification capability against a broader spectrum of insecticides has never been investigated. It is revealed that PaGSTd1 expression showed a rapid and significant increase upon exposure to various insecticides (organophosphates, neonicotinoids , and fipronil). Subsequent in vitro metabolic assays indicated that organophosphates , particularly chlorpyrifos-methyl, can be effectively metabolized by PaGSTd1. Further knockdown of PaGSTd1 via RNA interference significantly heightened the susceptibility of P. americana to chlorpyrifos-methyl, underscoring the enzyme's key role in detoxifying chlorpyrifos-methyl. Additionally, this study confirmed that PaGSTd1 cannot mitigate insecticide toxicity through countering oxidative stress . Collectively, these findings elucidate the involvement of PaGSTd1 in the detoxification processes for organophosphates, offering a comprehensive insight into the metabolic mechanisms mediated by GSTs in P. americana . This research provides a foundational understanding for managing GSTs-mediated metabolic resistance in this species, which is crucial for effective pest control strategies.

Engineering of Bi2O3-BiOI 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic organic hazards removal

Jie Cui,Ruotong Zhu,Meiqi Ding,Guoli Chen,Shuhua Liang,Shaodong Sun

Construction of S-scheme heterojunction with 2D/2D structure can accelerate the carrier separation and migration owing to the induced built-in electric field, short carrier migration distance and large contact area. Herein, we develop a simple one-step solvent thermal method for the synthesis of novel Bi 2 O 3 -BiOI 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction with intimate interfacial contact. As expected, the as-prepared Bi 2 O 3 -BiOI heterojunction presents higher visible-light driven photodegradation of tetracycline (TC), as well as rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl), than the counterparts. Besides, the potential degradation pathways of TC are elucidated and the toxicities of intermediates are assessed in detail. Significantly, the mechanism insight into S-scheme charge transfer mechanism in Bi 2 O 3 -BiOI 2D/2D heterojunction is uncovered in depth by density functional theory calculations and a series of experimental evidences. This work affords a useful inspiration on constructing high-performance BiOI-based photocatalysts via engineering of heterojunction and morphology for organic hazards removal.

Enhanced Catalytic Efficiency of Nanozyme with V-structured chip for Microfluidic Biosensing of S. typhimurium

Ming-Yue Gao,Meng Wang,Yong-Tao Wang,Zhi-Ling Zhang

Nanozymes, the nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics which exhibit lower cost, easier synthesis and functionalization, better stability compared with natural enzymes, have been widely developed for biosensing, disease therapy and environmental governance. However, the lack of catalytic efficiency of nanozymes compared to natural enzymes makes it difficult to completely replace natural enzymes to achieve higher sensitivity and lower detection limit in biosensing. Herein, magnetism-controlled technology was used to form nanozyme array consisted of stacked Fe3O4/Au NPs at the bottom of the microchannel as a spatially confined microreactor for the catalytic reaction. By enhancing the mass transfer process of substrate towards nanozyme which was mediated by the corresponding V-structure, a higher local concentration of substrate and more efficient utilization of active sites of nanozyme were obtained to increase the catalytic efficiency (kcat/KM) of the nanozyme array consisted of the Fe3O4/Au NPs by 95.2%, which was two orders of magnitude than that of the open reactor. Based on this, a colorimetric method on an integrated microfluidic platform was proposed for sensitive biosensing of Salmonella typhimurium. The entire detection could be completed within 30 minutes, yielding a linear range from 102 to 107 CFU/mL and a detection limit as low as 5.6 CFU/mL.

A novel photothermal-assisted FeNi2S4@Mn0.3C0.7S S-scheme heterojunction for enhanced photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution

Fuping Zhao,Xintong Yao,Yutong Zhao,Jiahui Yu,Jixian Dong,Xin Liu,Jinghao Cao,Dafeng Zhang,Xipeng Pu

In addition to the intrinsic driving force of photocatalysis, the external thermal field from the photothermal effect can provide additional energy to the photo-catalytic system to improve the photo-catalytic hydrogen-evolution (PHE) efficiency. Herein, based on the results of density functional theory, we designed and constructed a hollow core–shell FeNi 2 S 4 @Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (NFS@MCS) S-scheme heterojunction with a photothermal effect, thereby realising a significant enhancement of the PHE performance due to the thermal effect, S-scheme heterojunction and hollow core–shell morphology. As a light collector and heat source, the hollow NFS could absorb and convert photons into heat, resulting in the increased local temperature of photocatalyst particles. Moreover, the S-scheme charge path at the interface not only improved the carrier separation efficiency but also retained a higher redox potential. All these are favourable to increase the PHE activity. The PHE tests show that 0.5 %-NFS@MCS exhibits the highest PHE rate of 17.11 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , 7.7 times that of MCS. Moreover, through a combination of theoretical calculation and experimental evidence, the PHE mechanism of the NFS@MCS system is discussed and clarified in-depth.

Bi atom sharing Co-Bi2O2CO3/BiOI S-scheme induced singlet oxygen-dominated photocatalytic oxidation system

Zhiang Hou,Jinzhu Yue,Hao Chen,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) interfere with the normal secretion, transport and metabolism of human hormones, thus affecting neurological, reproductive and immune functions. Photocatalysis is regarded as a facile organic degradation technique. The construction of heterojunctions can modulate the reactive oxygen species and enhance the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. However, poor contact interfaces still severely limit carrier separation and transfer. Herein, we have doped Co to modulate the band structure of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 while facilitating the in situ growth of BiOI on its surface via shared Bi atoms. This approach led to the development of a 2D/2D Co-Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /BiOI (Co-BOC/BiOI) S-scheme heterojunction characterized by atomically close contact interfaces. Furthermore, the photo-electrochemical characterization results indicate that the light adsorption capacity, carrier separation and transport efficiency of the optimized Co-BOC/BiOI-3 are greatly improved. This system demonstrates almost 100% removal rate for three typical EDCs within 60 min. The degradation kinetic constants show an improvement by an order of magnitude compared to single BiOI and Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 . More importantly, O 2 •﹣ , which is produced from O 2 reduction on high negative conduction band, can be subsequently oxidized into 1 O 2 by photogenerated hole. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments indicate that the organics degradation process is dominated by 1 O 2 . This work offers new insights into the construction of high-quality S-scheme heterojunction interfaces for modulation of reactive oxygen species.

Bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite with enhanced stability for propane dehydrogenation

Jie Zhou,Qingdi Sun,Yuhan Qin,Hao Liu,Peng Hu,Chao Xiong,Hongbing Ji

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been an outstanding technique with a bright prospect, which can meet the growing global demand for propylene. However, undesired side reactions result in the deactivation of the Pt-based catalysts, which contribute to the insufficient lifetime of the catalysts. Herein, we describe a novel catalyst by encapsulating bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite for efficient dehydrogenation of propane, which synergizes the confinement of zeolites and the geometric and electronic effects on Pt species for enhancing the catalyst stability. The introduction of bimetallic additives efficiently promotes the dispersion of platinum and the electron transfer between Pt species and the additives, which greatly prolongs the lifetime of the catalysts. Particularly, no obvious deactivation is observed on 0.2Pt0.3Co0.5CuK@S-1 after 93 h on stream with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 5.4 h −1 , revealing an ultralow deactivation constant of 0.0011 h −1 (t = 909 h). The formation rate of propylene still maintains at a high value of 407 mol  g Pt -1 gPt-1  h −1 (WHSV = 21.6 h −1 ) at 580 ℃ even after on pure propane stream for 42 h. The catalyst with the bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite reveals ultra-high activity and stability for PDH, which is ascribed to the highly dispersed Pt species and the stabilization effect of bimetallic additives on Pt species.

Amplified internal electric field of Cs2CuBr4@WO3−x S-scheme heterojunction for efficient CO2 photoreduction

Zhijie Zhang,Xuesheng Wang,Junyi Qian,Jiayue Xu

Heterojunction construction, especially S-scheme heterojunction, represents an efficient universal strategy to achieve high-performance photocatalytic materials. For further performance stimulation of these well-designed heterojunctions, modulating the interfacial internal electric field (IEF) to steer dynamic charge transfer represents a promising approach. Herein, we realized the precise regulation of Fermi level ( E F ) of the oxidation semiconductor (mesoporous WO 3− x ) by tailoring the concentration of oxygen vacancies (V O ), maximizing the IEF intensity in Cs 2 CuBr 4 @WO 3− x (CCB@WO 3− x ) S-scheme heterojunction. The augmented IEF affords a robust driving force for directional electron delivery, leading to boosted charge separation. Hence, the developed CCB@WO 3− x S-scheme heterojunction demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance, with the electron consumption rate ( R electron ) up to 390.34 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 3.28 folds higher than that of pure CCB. An in-depth analysis of the S-scheme electron transfer mode was presented via theoretical investigations, electron spin resonance (ESR), photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, the CO 2 photoconversion route was explored in detail using in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and DFT theoretical calculations.

Quinoxaline-based crosslinked membranes of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s for fuel cell applications

Pei Chen,Xinbing Chen,Zhongwei An,Kangcheng Chen,Kenichi Okamoto

A series of crosslinkable sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAESs) were synthesized by copolymerization of 4,4′-biphenol with 2,6-difluorobenzil and 3,3′-disulfonated-4,4′-difluorodiphenyl sulfone disodium salt. Quinoxaline-based crosslinked SPAESs were prepared via the cyclocondensation reaction of benzil moieties in polymer chain with 3,3′-diaminobenzidine to form quinoxaline groups acting as covalent and acid-base ionic crosslinking . The uncrosslinked and crosslinked SPAES membranes showed high mechanical properties and the isotropic membrane swelling, while the later became insoluble in tested polar aprotic solvents . The crosslinking significantly improved the membrane performance , i.e., the crosslinked membranes had the lower membrane dimensional change, lower methanol permeability and higher oxidative stability than the corresponding precursor membranes, with keeping the reasonably high proton conductivity . The crosslinked membrane ( CS1-2 ) with measured ion exchange capacity of 1.53 mequiv. g −1 showed a reasonably high proton conductivity of 107 mS/cm with water uptake of 48 wt.% at 80 °C, and exhibited a low methanol permeability of 2.3 × 10 −7  cm 2  s −1 for 32 wt.% methanol solution at 25 °C. The crosslinked SPAES membranes have potential for PEFC and DMFCs.

A MOF derived multi-phase FeNi3-S catalyst for efficient hydrogen storage in magnesium hydride

Linxin Zheng,Shuai Li,Liuting Zhang,Tao Zhong,Xiuzhen Wang,Ting Bian,Petr Senin,Ying Wu

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) demonstrates immense potential as a solid-state hydrogen storage material, while its commercial utilization is impeded by the elevated operating temperature and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a MOF derived multi-phase FeNi 3 -S catalyst was specially designed for efficient hydrogen storage in MgH 2 . Experiments confirmed that the incorporation of FeNi 3 -S into MgH 2 significantly lowered the desorption temperature and accelerated the kinetics of hydrogen desorption and reabsorption. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of the MgH 2  + 10 wt% FeNi 3 -S composite was 202°C, which was 123°C lower than that of pure MgH 2 . At 325°C, the MgH 2  + 10 wt% FeNi 3 -S composite released 6.57 wt% H 2 (fully dehydrogenated) within 1000 s. Remarkably, MgH 2  + 10 wt% FeNi 3 -S composite initiated rehydrogenation at room temperature and rapidly absorbed 2.49 wt% H 2 within 30 min at 100°C. Moreover, 6.3 wt% H 2 was still retained after 20 cycles at 300°C, demonstrating the superior cycling performance of the MgH 2  + 10 wt% FeNi 3 -S composite. The activation energy fitting calculations further evidenced the addition of FeNi 3 -S enhanced the de/resorption kinetics of MgH 2 ( E a  = 98.6 kJ/mol and 43.3 kJ/mol respectively). Through phase and microstructural analysis, it was determined that the exceptional hydrogen storage performance of the composite was attributed to the in-situ formation of Mg/Mg 2 Ni + Fe/MgS and MgH 2 /Mg 2 NiH 4  + Fe/MgS hydrogen storage systems. Further mechanistic analysis revealed that Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 served as “hydrogen pump” and Fe/MgS served as “hydrogen diffusion channel”, thus accelerating the dissociation and recombination of hydrogen molecules. In conclusion, this work offers insight into catalysts combining transition metal alloys and transition metal sulfide for exerting muti-phase synergistic effect on boosting the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation reactions of MgH 2 , which can also inspire future pioneering work on designing and fabricating high efficient catalysts in other energy storage related areas.

Synthesis of novel poly(aminophosphonate ester)s flame retardants and their applications in EVA copolymer

Yan Liu,Yan Zhang,Zhenhu Cao,Mao Peng,Zhengping Fang

Novel oligomeric intumescent flame retardants, poly(amino phosphonate ester)s (PAPEs), containing both phosphorous and nitrogen, were synthesized by reacting diethyl phosphite with two different polyschiff bases obtained from the reaction of diamines with dialdehyde. The target PAPEs (designated as PAPE-d and PAPE-e, respectively) were characterized by 1 H NMR, 31 P NMR, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Thermal stability and flammability of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/PAPE blends with various PAPE content were investigated by TGA, limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94) and microscale combustion colorimeter (MCC). The results indicate that PAPEs effectively improve the flame retardancy of EVA. The EVA/30%PAPE-e blend has a LOI value of 28, and its peak heat release rate (PHRR) value in MCC measurement is reduced by 36%. At the same time, the EVA/PAPE blends also have high yield of residual char, indicating that PAPEs are effective charring agents. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the residues of the EVA/PAPE blends show the existence of compact char layer on the surface of the residues, which is responsible for the improvement of the flame retardancy of EVA.
