High Capacity All-Solid-State Lithium Battery Using Cathodes with Three-Dimensional Li+ Conductive Network

Yanhua Zhang,Fei Chen,Dunjie Yang,Wenping Zha,Junyang Li,Qiang Shen,Xulong Zhang,Lianmeng Zhang

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs) have been dramatically attracted recently for its ability of solving the safety issues in traditional lithium ion batteries using liquid electrolyte. However the poor Li+ transportation between the active material particles in the cathode greatly deteriorate the specific capacity of ASLBs. Herein, we design a composite cathode composed of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and LiCoO2 (LCO) in which a three-dimensional (3D) continuous Li+ conductive network forms. With the decrease of the LCO: PEO ratio, the 3D Li+ conductive network gradually becomes continuous, and the corresponding discharge capacity increase from 50 to 136 mAh g−1. At LCO: PEO = 6:1 and 4:1, the corresponding ASLBs has a very high discharge capacity of 136 and 124 mAh g−1, respectively, representing approximately 98% and 90% of the theoretical discharge capacity. The capacity retention after 5 cycles is 97%∼98% of the 2nd cycle, which confirms stable cycle performance of the battery. The FTIR results show that, in the composite cathode, the LCO particles transport Li+ cations by coordinating CO functional group in PEO chains. Compared with other optimized ASLBs based on LLZO solid elctrolyte, our battery has higher specific capacity while being tested under the highest current rate.

Understanding the anchoring effect on Li plating with Indium Tin oxide layer functionalized hosts for Li metal anodes

Xiaolin Yan,Fangjun Ye,Yinggan Zhang,Liang Lin,Baisheng Sa,Fang Liu,Junjie Li,Laisen Wang,Jie Lin,Qingshui Xie,Dong-Liang Peng

Li dendrites caused by nonuniform Li plating and locally concentrated ion/electron flux would give rise to poor cycling performance and safety issues of short-circuit and so on. Herein, a functional nanolayer consisting of Indium Tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles on 3D Cu foam was fabricated as case study to understand the mechanism of metal oxides on anchoring Li metal spots and how initial Li nucleation influences the following dendrites growth. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, it is demonstrated that not only the pristine metal oxides have higher binding energy with Li atom, but also in situ formed alloy phase during alloying process performs a great importance on homogeneous nucleation, thus leading to ordered ion/electron distribution and fast kinetics. Therefore, excellent wettability and even self-propagation behavior between ITO-Cu foam and molten Li are achieved, meanwhile the half cells with ITO-Cu foam electrodes exhibit an ultralow nucleation overpotential of 2 mV under 0.5 mA cm −2 . When the designed ITO-Cu foam@Li anodes is matched with LFP (LiFePO 4 ) cathodes, the constructed full cells can empower superior cycling stability for over 1000 cycles at 5C (3.4 mA cm −2 ), and remarkable specific capacity (149 mAh g −1 ) and capacity retention (80% for 250 cycles) even with ultrahigh mass loading (15.3 mg cm −2 ), which provides an avenue to regulate Li deposition/dissolution for high energy Li metal batteries.

The inhibited Li dendrite growth via bulk/liquid dual-phase modulation

Xin Dong,Ziqin Liu,Kaiquan He,Pu Hu,Chaoqun Shang

Li metal is a potential anode material for the next generation high-energy–density batteries because of its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the inhomogeneous lithium dendrite growth restrains corresponding electrochemical performance and brings safety concerns. In this contribution, the Li 3 Bi/Li 2 O/LiI fillers are generated by the in-situ reaction between Li and BiOI nanoflakes, which promises corresponding Li anodes (BiOI@Li) showing favorable electrochemical performance. This can be attributed to the bulk/liquid dual modulations: (1) The three-dimensional Bi-based framework in the bulk-phase lowers the local current density and accommodates the volume variation; (2) The LiI dispersed within Li metal is slowly released and dissolved into the electrolyte with the consumption of Li, which will form I − /I 3 − electron pair and further reactivate the inactive Li species. Specifically, the BiOI@Li//BiOI@Li symmetrical cell shows small overpotential and enhanced cycle stability over 600 h at 1 mA cm −2 . Matched with an S-based cathode, the full Li-S battery demonstrates desirable rate performance and cycling stability.

Mo2C catalyzed low-voltage prelithiation using nano-Li2C2O4 for high-energy lithium-ion batteries

Zhong Wei,Zhang Ce,Li Siwu,Zhang Wei,Zeng Ziqi,Cheng Shijie,Xie Jia

Irreversible lithium loss in the initial cycles appreciably reduces the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Prelithiation is an effective way to compensate for such lithium loss, but current methods suffer from either the instability or low capacity of prelithiation reagents. Lithium oxalate (Li 2 C 2 O 4 ) has shown great potential as a lithium-compensation material because of its high theoretical capacity (equivalent to lithium metal), low cost, and air stability. However, the practical applications of Li 2 C 2 O 4 are limited by its low electrochemical activity and high critical decomposition voltage. In this study, we performed the prelithiation of a low-voltage cathode by using Mo 2 C catalysis and nano-Li 2 C 2 O 4 . Results show that the Mo 2 C catalyst changes the electron cloud distribution around Li 2 C 2 O 4 and greatly reduces the activation energy, thereby significantly accelerating the lithium release from Li 2 C 2 O 4 . The nano-Li 2 C 2 O 4 prepared by freeze-drying shows accelerated ionic and electronic conduction as well as close contact with Mo 2 C. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the decomposition potential of Li 2 C 2 O 4 is decreased by 0.5 V with an efficiency close to 100%. The LiCoO 2 ∥SiO full cell empowered with the nano-Li 2 C 2 O 4 /Mo 2 C prelithiation composite demonstrates 46.9% higher capacity than the control and thus has great potential for practical applications.

In situ coordinated ultrathin MOF-polymer electrolyte membrane with vertically aligned transfer channels for solid lithium metal batteries

Xinhong Qi,Shichen Zhang,Yihang Li,Xiangcun Li,Fangyi Chu,Xuri Wang,Miao Yu,Xiaobin Jiang,Xuehua Ruan,Jiangping Tu,Gaohong He

Metal organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite solid electrolyte membrane with novel microstructure is expected to show attractive prospect for solid state lithium metal batteries . But the reported MOF were usually regarded as an entirety in composite solid electrolyte resulting in tradeoff between ionic conductivity and lithium dendrite inhibition ability. Herein, MOF-polymer composite membrane with vertically aligned channels and ultrathin MOF layer is proposed to decrease lithium ion transportation resistance obtained by simple phase inversion and in situ coordinated growth methods. The vertically aligned highways can decrease tortuous pathways and intensify ion conduction. The embedded ultrathin MOF layer on membrane surface leads to homogeneous plating/stripping of lithium. This novel structured MOF-polymer composite solid electrolyte exhibits improved ionic conductivity of 0.55 mS cm −1  at 22 ° C and lithium ion transference number of 0.87. Furthermore, the Li/Li symmetrical cell shows stable lithium plating/stripping performance for 1100 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and 0.1 mA h cm −2 . LiFePO 4 /MOF-polymer/Li coin battery demonstrates good rate capability and cycling performance with capacity retention of 82 % after 100 cycles at 0.2C and the pouch cell can light up the “DLUT” blue light lamp under folding and cutting states. This work encourages a new avenue to develop composite solid electrolytes with ion transportation highways and uniform distribution plane for solid lithium metal batteries.

Construction of high-performance Li-rich Mn-based cathodes assisted by a novel water-soluble LiPAA binder

Zhao Taolin,Chang Liyao,Ji Rixin,Chen Shaokang,Jin Xiaoyu,Zheng Yingdi,Huang Xiyun,Shen Jiangang,Zhang Yuxia

Recently, all types of electrical equipment put forward increasing requirements on the energy density of secondary rechargeable batteries. The low specific capacity of cathode material is the primary factor that restricts the energy density of Li-ion batteries. Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials have the advantages of high specific capacity, high operating voltage, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, they have the limitations of low first Coulombic efficiency and serious capacity/voltage attenuation. In this work, lithium polyacrylate (LiPAA) has been employed as a water-soluble binder in the electrode to develop a high-performance Li-rich Mn-based cathode. The effect of the LiPAA binder on voltage drop and electrochemical performance of Li[Li 0.2 Co 0.13 Ni 0.13 Mn 0.54 ]O 2 cathode has been examined to reveal the modification mechanism. The results show that carboxyl group (–COOH) in the LiPAA structure can form strong hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms in the active material, making the electrode components firmly bonded and thus maintaining the structural stability of the cathode upon cycling. Moreover, the LiPAA binder can effectively inhibit voltage drop of Li[Li 0.2 Co 0.13 Ni 0.13 Mn 0.54 ]O 2 . The discharge voltage of the electrode decreases by only 117 mV after 50 cycles. Green water-soluble LiPAA has broad prospective applications as a binder of electrode materials of secondary batteries.

Simultaneous magnesium precipitation and lithium enrichment with extreme separation factor for high Mg/Li ratio brines

Shishuo Wang,Fei Guo,Xuemei Wu,Yuandong Jia,Gaohong He,Xiaobin Jiang

Lithium and its compounds are critical strategic resources with wide-ranging applications. This study developed a bipolar membrane precipitation coupled electrodialysis enrichment (BMp-EDe) process for extracting lithium from brines with an Mg/Li ratio of 20. The method is based on phase separation achieved through precipitation-coupled ion permeation and a synergistic mechanism for ion enrichment, resulting in significant process intensification. Key factors such as current density, molar ratio between diluate and base chambers, and base chamber concentration were optimized to control nucleation and prevent membrane fouling. Under conditions of current density ranging from 200 to 400 A·m −2 and a molar ratio of the diluate chamber to the base chamber between 13 and 16, the magnesium removal rate in the BMp-EDe process is found to exceed 99.90 %, with a separation factor greater than 20,000. The optimal separation factor is observed to reach 40,244, with a magnesium removal rate as 99.96 % and a lithium recovery rate as 95.32 %. With optimized operation conditions, the energy consumption of magnesium precipitation decreased from 11.89 kWh·kg −1 (Mg 2+ ) to 7.97 kWh·kg −1 (Mg 2+ ). Thus, an alternative method is presented that employs commercial bipolar membranes to achieve ultra-high magnesium‑lithium separation efficiency. Additionally, a mechanism for the continuous operation of the magnesium precipitation chamber is validated, which can effectively prevent membrane fouling.

High-performance of LaCoO3/Co3O4 nanocrystal as anode for lithium-ion batteries

Na Zhang,Enqi Liu,Hongwei Chen,Jinhui Hou,Chao Li,Hongri Wan

In order to solve the problem of low capacity and volume expansion of LaCoO 3 , LaCoO 3 /Co 3 O 4 perovskite composites were effectively fabricated by a simple hydrothermal method coupled with calcination process. When the calcination temperature is 800 °C, due to the nanoscale sizes, mesoporous structure and heterogeneous components, the samples (named LaCoO 3 /Co 3 O 4 -800) exhibit excellent lithium storage performance as lithium ion batteries (LIBs) anodes. LaCoO 3 /Co 3 O 4 -800 anode exhibits a high reversible capacity (549.7 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 100 mA/g) and superior cycling stability (396.7 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 1 A/g). This research provides potential candidates for perovskite lanthanide nanomaterials for LIBs anodes.

Novel process for the extraction of lithium carbonate from spent lithium-containing aluminum electrolytes by leaching with aluminum nitrate and nitric acid

Shaohua Wu,Wenju Tao,Yanchen Zheng,Youjian Yang,Jiangyu Yu,Jingbo Cui,Yu Lu,Zhongning Shi,Zhaowen Wang

A hydrometallurgical process was developed to extract lithium from a spent lithium-containing aluminum electrolyte, reduce the stacking of spent aluminum electrolyte, and recover the valuable elements. In this study, we extracted lithium from an electrolyte using the following three steps: 1) leaching with HNO 3  − Al(NO 3 ) 3 , 2) neutralizing the leachate obtained in the first step, and 3) precipitating the lithium carbonate. A lithium extraction efficiency of 88.0% could be achieved after a leaching time of 6 h, at a leaching temperature of 80 °C and an Al/F molar ratio of 1:6. During the process of neutralization, Al 3+ and F − was precipitated as Al 2 ((OH) 0.46 F 0.54 ) 6 (H 2 O). The obtained Li 2 CO 3 with a high purity of 98.8%.

Fe-cation Doping in NiSe2 as an Effective Method of Electronic Structure Modulation towards High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Liwei Shi,Hailiang Fang,Xiaoxia Yang,Jie Xue,Caifeng Li,Shifeng Hou,Cheng Hu

Graphical Doping for batteries : Fe-doped NiSe 2 nanosheets grown on activated carbon cloth substrates provide elevated performance as Li−S free-standing cathodes. Fe-doping in NiSe 2 enables improved charge transfer and stronger interactions with the adsorbed sulfur species, as well as higher electrical conductivity. The transformation of Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S growth from conventional 2D films to 3D particles eliminates the barriers of phase transitions during the cathode redox processes. The commercialization of Li−S batteries is hindered by the shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), the sluggish sulfur redox kinetics as well as the low sulfur utilization during charge/discharge processes. Herein, a free-standing cathode material was developed, based on Fe-doped NiSe 2 nanosheets grown on activated carbon cloth substrates (Fe-NiSe 2 /ACC) for high-performance Li−S batteries. Fe-doping in NiSe 2 plays a key role in the electronic structure modulation of NiSe 2 , enabling improved charge transfer with the adsorbed LiPSs molecules, stronger interactions with the active sulfur species and higher electrical conductivity. Effective promotion of the sulfur redox kinetics and enhanced sulfur utilization were achieved under high areal sulfur loadings. The stronger interactions with LiPSs together with the unique 3D structure of Fe-NiSe 2 /ACC also induced the transformation of Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S growth from conventional 2D films to 3D particles, significantly eliminating the barriers of solid nucleation and growth during the phase transition of liquid LiPSs to solid Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S. With a high sulfur loading of 9.9 mg cm −2 , the Fe-NiSe 2 /ACC cathode enabled a high area capacity of 9.14 mAh cm −2 with a low average decay of 0.11 % per cycle over 200 cycles at 0.1 C.

Lithium resurrection: Synergistic thermal-decomposition and electric-drive strategy enabling inactive lithium fully recycling

Shuzhe Yang,Hao Luo,Yukun Li,Qingqing Gao,Hui Li,Hongwei Cai,Xiaodan Li,Yanfen Wen,Yujin Tong,Tiefeng Liu,Mi Lu

Traditional pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy processes primarily focus on the recovery of valuable metals (Co, Ni, etc.) from spent lithium-ion batteries. However, these methods are not economical for recycling cheap LiFePO 4 . Herein, a synergistic thermal-decomposition and electric-drive strategy is proposed to recover the whole spent LiFePO 4 electrode by in-situ recovering the inactive lithium (dead lithium and trapped interlayer lithium). Firstly, the organic components in the dense solid electrolyte interface (SEI) are effectively decomposed through thermal-decomposition processing, exposing the dead lithium encapsulated within the SEI and recovering the electron channels between the dead lithium and graphite. Leveraging the difference between the Gibbs free energy of the dead lithium and graphite as the driving force facilitates the dead lithium inserting into the anode. Then, fully utilizing the remaining discharge capacity of the spent LiFePO 4 cell, the inactive lithium is reinserted into LiFePO 4 lattice during the electric-drive process. Consequently, the reactivated lithium content increases by more than 16%, reaching a capacity of 134.2 mA h g −1 compared to 115.2 mA h g −1 from degraded LiFePO 4 , allowing for effective participation in the subsequent cycling. This work provides new perspectives on highly profitable cycles with low energy and material consumption and a low carbon footprint.

LiF as a Crack/Defect Healer and Structural Stabilizer for the Spent Lithium Cobalt Oxide

Yongsheng Ji,Dan Yang,Yan Li,Maxim Avdeev,Wang Hay Kan,Mengyi Liao,Zhenyan Zhang,Weichen Du,Xinpeng Pi,Chaofan Liang,Zhou Fang,Xiaoqun Qi,Lan Xue,Renyuan Zhang,Long Qie,Yunhui Huang

The proliferation of lithium-ion batteries results in a substantial accumulation of spent batteries. Traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes require significant energy inputs, involve the use of hazardous chemicals, and generate large amounts of pollutants, making them inefficient for the economic or environmental recycling of spent batteries. For the spent lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathodes, which lose electrochemical activity due to the structural damage, we demonstrated that LiF could serve as both a crack/defect healer to repair the damaged structure and a structural stabilizer to consolidate the electrode/electrolyte interface and the reversibility of phase transitions. The density functional theory calculations revealed the presence of F atoms in the U-LCO crystal leads to a widened energy separation between the Co 3d and O 2p orbitals, such an alteration effectively suppresses the activity of lattice oxygen and stabilizes the structure of U-LCO. The as-upcycled LCO cathode demonstrates significantly improved stability with an impressive capacity retention of 81.6% after 260 cycles, surpassing those of the pristine LCO (62.3%) and normally regenerated LCO (35.6%). Moreover, the recycling process only involves a solid sintering procedure, leading to a reduced carbon footprint by 73.1% and 64.1%, and increased benefits by 62.2% and 47.7%, as compared with the pyro and hydro methods, respectively. The as-proposed upcycling strategy provides a practical and efficient solution for the closed-loop development of LCO batteries.
