A novel “cortex-like” micro/nano dual-scale structured TiO 2 coating was prepared on a titanium surface by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) with tetraborate electrolytes. This structure, which combines microslots with nanopores, exhibits super hydrophilicity. This coating modified the surface structure, chemistry, and hydrophilicity in a one-step treatment. Evolution of the coating together with its surface and structure properties was studied. We propose a forming mechanism of the dual-scale structure in which the oxides formed during the MAO discharge dissolve in the tetraborate electrolytes, leaving little or no deposition outside the discharge channels. We performed in vitro tests using human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) that compared this coating with a “volcano-like” MAO coating and a commercial sandblasted, large-grit and acid-etched (SLA) coating. The adhesion, morphology, proliferation, and differentiation of hBMSCs, together with the matrix mineralization, were investigated. Results suggest that the “cortex-like” structure significantly promotes the adhesion, spreading, and differentiation of cells and increases the matrix mineralization. In vivo tests with mongrel dogs showed an excellent osseointegration of the “cortex-like” coating. The combination of the dual-scale structure and the hydrophilicity of the “cortex-like” TiO 2 coating synergistically resulted in an outstanding cytocompatibility and osseointegration, which may facilitate a higher level of implant success.

A corrosion and wear resistant coating was developed on the surface of titanium alloy using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technology with addition of lignin sulfonate (SLS) as an additive in electrolytes containing 15 g/L of Na 2 SiO 3 ·9H 2 O and 10 g/L of Na 3 PO 4 ·12H 2 O. The effects of concentration of SLS on the surface morphology, microstructure, and corrosion-wear performance of the MAO coatings were systematically investigated. Wetting properties and mechanical characteristics of MAO coatings were determined by contact angle measurements, microhardness testing, and bonding strength assessments. The corrosion resistance of the MAO coating in artificial saliva media was assessed through electrochemical testing, while its tribological and corrosion-wear performance was evaluated via dry friction tests and corrosion-wear tests, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the incorporation of lignin sulfonate as the electrolyte additive enhances pore filling within the coating matrix while improving both mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Notably, MAO coatings with a concentration of 1 g/L exhibited superior mechanical properties; furthermore, their corrosion current density decreased by one to three orders of magnitude compared to that of the TC4 substrate.

Photo-thermal antibacterial properties have attracted much attention in the biomedical field because of their higher antibacterial efficiency. Through fabricating micro-arc oxidation coatings with different treating current densities set on a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, the present study tried to systematically investigate and optimize the corrosion resistance and photo-thermal antibacterial properties of MAO coatings. The results indicated that different current densities had great influence on the corrosion resistance and photo-thermal property of the MAO coatings, and a current density at 30 A·dm−2exhibited the best corrosion resistance, light absorption capacity at 808 nm, and photo-thermal capability, simultaneously with good antibacterial activity againstStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherichia coli(E. coli). This photo-thermal property of MAO coatings was probably related to the effect of current density on MgO content in the coating that could promote the separation of photo-generated electron carriers and hinder the recombination of photo-generated electron carriers and holes. Keywords:magnesium alloy;micro-arc oxidation;corrosion resistance;photo-thermal therapy;anti-bacteria

Orthopedic implants with both osteogenesis and antibacterial functions are particularly promising for bone repair and substitutes. In this study, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating containing titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), gallium oxide (Ga 2 O 3 ) and tantalum oxide (Ta 2 O 5 ) on the titanium surface (MGT) was fabricated by dispersing Ga 2 O 3 and Ta microparticles in the electrolyte. The results showed that the simultaneous incorporation of Ga 2 O 3 and Ta microparticles into the MAO coating resulted in optimized surface performance (e.g., micro-topography, roughness, wettability, surface energy, and protein absorption) of MGT compared with pure titanium (pTi). In addition, MGT exhibited outstanding corrosion resistance owing to the presence of both Ga 2 O 3 and Ta microparticles, which exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and their microparticles were incorporated into the micropores of the coating. Moreover, MGT with good cytocompatibility and optimized surface resulted in improved cellular responses (e.g., proliferation and osteogenic differentiation) of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells, which was attributed to Ta microparticles with outstanding osteogenic bioactivity. Furthermore, the excellent antibacterial effect of MGT was attributed to the slow release of Ga 3+ from the coating. Thus, the simultaneous incorporation of Ga 2 O 3 and Ta microparticles into the MAO coating of MGT exhibited excellent cytocompatibility, osteogenic bioactivity, antibacterial functions, and corrosion resistance, suggesting that MGT possesses great potential for bone repair applications.

The MgAl Layered double hydroxides (LDHs)/graphene oxide (GO) composite film was fabricated in situ on the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) film (MAO/LG) of AZ31 magnesium alloy in one step by hydrothermal chemical conversion method. The growth behavior and corrosion properties of LG films were investigated. The results show that the chemical structure, composition and morphology of the LG film will gradually change with the extension of the hydrothermal treatment time based on using the self-dissolved cation (Mg 2+ and Al 3+ ) in the MAO film as the source of growing LDHs without introducing any external metal cations. The potentiodynamic polarization showed that the MAO/LG-12 h coating (1.28 × 10 −9 A/cm 2 ) after in situ growth for 12 h was more corrosion resistant than the MAO coating (8.49 × 10 −6 A/cm 2 ). The synergistic effect of GO and LDHs can significantly improve the corrosion protection ability of MAO coating. In addition, the transition process of the growth behavior of the LG film layer on the MAO coating is explained in detail.

Lightweight alloys have gained prominence in weight-critical applications, however their susceptibility to corrosion and inability to mitigate surface ice accumulation remain significant limitations. In this study, these challenges are addressed by developing a photothermal self-healing, solid-like super-slippery coating using magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloy as a substrate. Through synchrotron tomography, the mechanically cross-linked architecture of the cured super-slippery coating integrated with a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) layer is revealed. Experimental results demonstrate that the coating achieves autonomous repair under natural sunlight. In-situ metallographic microscopy further captures dynamic paraffin redistribution during the self-healing process. The contact angle of the FSSC-MAO coating reaches 100 ° , which effectively reduces the actual contact area between surface droplets and the coating and extending surface icing time by fivefold, while the active photothermal functionality enables rapid de-icing (outdoor temperature: −8°C) via sunlight exposure. Outdoor field tests validate the coating’s dual capability in corrosion resistance and ice mitigation, highlighting its potential for real-world applications in low-temperature environment.

ZIF-8-modified micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings have attracted considerable attention for improving the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, owing to their combined barrier and chemical protection effects. In this work, ZIF-8/MAO composite coatings were fabricated via in situ solvothermal growth, and the effects of solvothermal temperature and time on coating evolution and corrosion performance were systematically investigated. The coatings were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results show that increasing the solvothermal temperature promotes ZIF-8 formation, which may be related to enhanced coordination reactions and particle growth. Prolonging the solvothermal time induces a transition from ZnO-dominated coatings at 8 h to ZIF-8-dominated structures at 16–24 h, whereas unconverted ZnO is still detected after prolonged growth. The in situ-grown ZIF-8 particles cover the MAO surface and contribute to the sealing of surface micropores and cracks, forming a more compact composite barrier structure. The reduced coating performance at 220 °C or after 32 h may be associated with excessive particle refinement, local structural imperfections, or reduced coating integrity under prolonged or high-temperature solvothermal conditions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results reveal that the composite coating exhibits a charge transfer resistance more than one order of magnitude higher than that of the bare MAO coating, indicating significantly enhanced barrier protection. These findings demonstrate that in situ-grown ZIF-8 is an effective strategy for improving the corrosion resistance of MAO coatings on aluminum alloys.

Cu 2 O/Cu@SiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles were fabricated by a DC arc plasma process. • Differential interfacial interactions among molten droplets drive core–shell formation. • Interfacial tension is identified as the key factor controlling structural evolution. Cu@SiO 2 core-shell heterogenous nano particles (Cu@SiO 2 CSHNPs) demonstrate significant application advantages in catalysis and functional material modification. Direct current arc plasma technology holds considerable promise for the synthesis and industrialization of related materials due to its inherent advantages. However, issues such as the complex and unclear synthesis mechanism of the Metal@SiO 2 system via direct current arc plasma methods constrain its potential for structural and performance regulation. In this study, Cu 2 O/Cu@SiO 2 core-shell particles were in situ synthesized for the first time via DC arc process. Building upon this, morphological and compositional analysis of the products led to the innovative proposal of a formation mechanism for core-shell heterostructures based on differential interfacial interactions between micro-nano molten droplets. The experimental results reveal that differences in interfacial tension among micro/nanoscale molten droplets play a decisive role in governing the phase distribution and structural evolution of the products. This work provides a new perspective for understanding the formation of Metal@SiO 2 core–shell nanostructures under arc plasma conditions and offers theoretical guidance for the controllable synthesis of related heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Titanium metal and alloys, despite their intrinsic corrosion resistance, are prone to localized corrosion and severe biofouling when deployed in harsh marine environments, which severely compromises their long‑term reliability. To address these issues, we report a multi‑step interfacial engineering strategy for the construction of a slippery liquid‑infused porous surface (SLIPS) on TA2 titanium metal, wherein an electrodeposited dendritic Ag architecture serves as the pivotal multifunctional component. This dendritic Ag skeleton plays a triple role. It provides a rough hierarchical scaffold that, after thiol‑induced superhydrophobicity, firmly locks the infused dimethylsilicone oil to form a stable SLIPS. It acts as a reservoir for sustained Ag + release, conferring long‑lasting antibacterial activity. Moreover, its high thermal conductivity facilitates rapid heat dissipation, significantly reducing ice adhesion. Benefiting from this synergistic design, the resulting coating exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance, with a charge transfer resistance R ct of 4.61 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 , which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of bare TA2 (7.52 × 10 5 Ω·cm 2 ). Concurrently, the integrated Ag⁺ release and thermal management functionalities endow the coating with potent anti‑biofouling (with inhibition efficiency larger than 90%) and high anti‑icing performance. This work demonstrates that the dendritic metallic skeleton can simultaneously act as a physical barrier, a chemical active source, and a thermal conductor, offering a novel and versatile approach for protecting Ti in the marine environment. An in-situ CeO x /TiO 2 heterostructured MAO coating was constructed. • Ce incorporation promoted pore sealing and coating densification. • The optimized coating achieved corrosion current density of 4.29 × 10 -9 A/cm 2 . • Antibacterial rate exceeded 90% via Ce release and ROS generation. • Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox induced charge redistribution and bandgap narrowing. Under marine service environments, titanium is facing dual threats of corrosion and microbial contamination. In this study, a CeO x nanocluster-modified TiO 2 is constructed on pure titanium via Micro-arc Oxidation technology with in-situ cerium salt introduction to control plasma discharge characteristics. It is found that the coating porosity with optimal Ce concentration is just 2.29%, and the thickness increases to 22.25 μm. The electrochemical testing reveals that the coating’s corrosion current density drops to 4.29 × 10 -9 A/cm 2 , and the charge transfer resistance reaches 3.78 × 10 6 Ω∙cm 2 , which still maintains a stable capacitive response after 14 days. This result is attributed to the combined effects of structural densification and electronic regulation at heterogeneous interfaces. Meanwhile, the antibacterial rates of the coating against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus reach 91.25% and 82.56%. According to experimental characterization and calculation of Density Functional Theory, it is confirmed that the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox pair not only drives redistribution of interface electrons, but also effectively reduces activation energy barrier of oxygen radicals, realizing efficient antibacterial activity through synergistic effect of the Ce x+ ion release and accelerated generation of Reactive Oxygen Species. Hence, this study provides a theoretical basis for designing rare-earth-modified multifunctional marine protective coatings. Superhydrophobic coatings, owing to their “zero-energy consumption” and “multifunctional” characteristics, exhibit great application potential in the field of anti-icing. However, most existing studies rely on either micro-arc oxidation (MAO) or spraying techniques alone: the former provides a protective ceramic layer but offers limited functional tunability, while the latter enables surface functionalization but suffers from poor adhesion and durability. In this work, an innovative combination of MAO and spraying was employed. A ceramic intermediate layer was first formed on the surface of TC11 alloy via MAO, followed by spraying fluorinated silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs-PFDTES) and epoxy resin to construct a composite coating with high adhesion, achieving excellent corrosion resistance and anti-icing performance. The surface wettability, layered morphology, elemental distribution, self-cleaning ability, corrosion resistance, and anti-icing mechanism were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the composite coating exhibits remarkable superhydrophobicity (WCA = 155.2 ± 0.2°, SA = 1.1 ± 0.1°). Electrochemical tests revealed that the impedance modulus |Z| 0.01 and charge transfer resistance (R ct ) of the coating increased by 1–2 orders of magnitude compared to the substrate, with an inhibition efficiency ( η ) as high as 98.5 %. Furthermore, dynamic icing experiments revealed that the composite coating achieves significant anti-icing effects by reducing thermal conductivity, contact area, and nucleation sites on the surface. This approach provides a new strategy for designing superhydrophobic coatings that balance strong adhesion with multifunctionality.

Conventional micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on lightweight alloy displays innumerable micron-sized through-holes, severely restricting its corrosion protection in many industrial applications. To address this problem, we demonstrated a new strategy by creating a highly corrosion-resistant composite coating on magnesium alloy. The composite coating comprises a micrometer-scale MAO primer and a sub-micrometer-sized sulfur-selenium (S-Se) alloy top layer. The underlying MAO layer is incorporated with metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, including inhibitor-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nano-containers. The thin S-Se film was fabricated by dip coating in a dimethylsiloxane-containing melt. The composite coating (S-Se/MOFs/MAO) with a thin thickness showed a tremendously increased charge transfer resistance and an ultralow corrosion current density down to 0.273 nA cm −2 , demonstrating remarkably superior corrosion protection in comparison with the unmodified and other MAO-based coatings reported to date. The origin of this unprecedented corrosion protection was mainly attributed to a combination of the inhibition by the released inhibitor and the structural integration resulting from the nanoparticle incorporation. Notably, the effective pore sealing via the strongly adhesive S-Se alloy thin film to the MgO layer through chemical bonding played an essential role in enhanced corrosion protection, supported by density functional theory calculation.
