The photocatalytic removal of nitric oxide (NO) is a promising technology used to reduce the level of harmful gaseous pollutants in parts per billion (ppb). As a potential photocatalyst, Bi2Sn2O7has a low quantum efficiency due to its fast recombination rate of photo-generated carriers. In this paper, Bi/Bi2Sn2O7was prepared by the in situ deposition of Bi. The structural, electrical, and optical properties of the attained sample were investigated through a series of analyses. The results demonstrate that Bi nanoparticles not only enhance the photoabsorption ability of Bi2Sn2O7due to their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, but also improve its photocatalytic activity. Photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the oxidation of NO at ppb level under xenon lamp (λ > 400 nm) irradiation. It was found that the photocatalytic NO removal rate increased from 7.2% (Bi2Sn2O7) to 38.6% (Bi/Bi2Sn2O7). The loading of Bi promotes the separation and migration of photo-generated carriers and enhances the generation of •O2−and •OH radicals responsible for the oxidation of NO. The Bi/Bi2Sn2O7composite photocatalyst also exhibits excellent photocatalytic stability, which makes it a potential candidate for use in air purification systems.

Electrochemical CO 2 conversion into valuable products provides a promising solution for achieving a carbon-neutral energy cycle. Herein, an active and stable Bi/Nafion interface is fabricated over Bi nanosheets with the modification of Nafion, which exhibits superior CO 2 conversion with formate selectivity of above 95% in a wide potential range, partial current density of 72.12 mA cm −2 at − 1.07 V vs. RHE in H-type cell. The extraordinary CO 2 reduction performance could be ascribed to a high CO 2 permeability and enhanced local proton activity at the Bi/Nafion interface, which leads to promoted CO 2 adsorption and feasible proton-coupled electron transfer during the CO 2 reduction process. Computational investigations reveal the modification of Nafion offers a comfortable platform to enable the key intermediate *OCHO to be stable. This work offers a valuable insight into interfacial manipulation of electrodes to convert CO 2 to valuable products.

Producing polyethylene (PE) with broad or bimodal molecular weight distribution (MWD) in one reactor using bimetallic catalysis is a cost- and energy-effective technique in the polyolefin industry. However, this technique is still faced with great challenges, including the difficulty in molecular weight (MW) regulation and poisonous effect commonly observed between the two metals resulting from strong interactions. In this work, a series of bimetallic catalysts CpCr/imidoV/silica with different Cr/V molar ratios were fabricated by anchoring Cp 2 Cr onto imidoV/silica, and the two mono-metallic catalysts CpCr/silica and imidoV/silica were also prepared for comparison. The results show that not only the activity but also the responses to alkyl-Al cocatalyst, polymerization temperature, and hydrogen were distinct between CpCr/silica and imidoV/silica. The interactions between Cr and V sites seemed to be weak. As a result, their different catalytic behaviors were generally reserved, thus making it possible to regulate the activity and the MW of PE products by adjusting Cr/V molar ratio. Thanks to the distinct hydrogen responses of Cr and V on bimetallic catalysts, bi- or broad-modal PE was successfully synthesized by hydrogen regulation. The relative content of low and high MW fractions could be adjusted by altering both the Cr/V molar ratio and hydrogen partial pressure.

Bismuth-doped luminescent materials have gained significant attention in recent years owing to their huge potential for applications in telecommunications, biomedicine, and displays. However, controlled synthesis of these materials, in particular for those luminescing in the near-infrared (NIR) region, remains a challenging subject of continuous research efforts. Herein, we show that low-temperature topotactic reduction using Al metal powder as an oxygen getter can be adopted as a powerful technique for the conversion of bismuth-doped red-emitting systems into their NIR-emitting cousins. Thorough experimental characterization indicates that the framework oxygen of the hosts can be topotactically extracted, thus producing unique metal–oxygen–metal crystalline networks in reduced phases while preserving the crystalline structure of the precursor. For the first time, based on detailed analyses of X-ray absorption data, we identified that a minority of Bi atoms occupy Ba2+ sites, and most of the Bi atoms occupy the P5+ and/or B3+ sites in the as-synthesized Bi-doped BaBPO5. Subsequent topotactic treatment preferentially changes the local environment of Bi at the P5+/B3+ sites, which results in the occurrence of NIR emission owing to the birth of NIR-luminescent, defective Bi–O polyhedra in which Bi bears lower oxidation states with respect to that in the precursor. The site-specific topotactic reduction reaction reported here helps us create peculiar NIR-luminescent Bi–O units, and simultaneously does not seriously affect the red photoluminescence of Bi2+ situated at the Ba2+ sites. Given that the long-lived, ultrawide NIR emission covers the second biological window, the phosphors developed here hold great promise for in vivo luminescence and lifetime bioimaging. We anticipate that this low-temperature topotactic reduction strategy can be applied to the development of more novel Bi-doped luminescent materials in various forms that can find a broad range of functional applications.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) can be made to last longer and perform better if their operating temperatures are lowered. Traditional SOFCs, however, have poor performance at low temperatures due to significant Ohmic and polarization losses. Regarding ionic conductivity, doped ceria excels as a low-temperature SOFC catalyst. In this study, Bi-doped CeO2 (Bi0.1Ce0.9O2) has been used to function as an electrolyte in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). The Bi–CeO2 is prepared as a functional electrolyte layer placed between two symmetrical porous electrodes NCAL (Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05LiO2–δ) by a wet chemical coprecipitation process. Using Na2Co3 as a precipitating agent enhances the performance of the produced Bi–CeO2 particles by enhancing their surface characteristics. The synthesized Bi–CeO2 electrolyte demonstrates an impressive fuel cell performance with a high ionic conductivity of 0.192 S/cm at a low temperature of 520 °C. Additionally, Bi-doped CeO2 demonstrates remarkable proton performance, with 660 mW/cm2 and an activation energy of only 0.456 eV at 520 °C. The mechanism of high conduction was proposed in great detail. The findings demonstrate that high ionic and proton conductivity in fuel cells is possible at low temperatures. In addition, the suggested work hints at the possibility of designing well-functioning electrolytes for advancing low-temperature fuel-cell technology.

The separation of photogenerated carriers and the efficient utilization of high-level energy electrons (HLEEs) are the key processes for improving the performance of photocatalysts. Herein, Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (CTOZIS) and Bi 3+ -doped Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (BCTOZIS) photocatalyst were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal method . The photocatalytic hydrogen production of CTOZIS and BCTOZIS was 1233.7 μmol g −1 and 4168.5 μmol g −1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) within 5 h, which was 2.3 and 7.6 times than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization demonstrated that after Bi 3+ doping, the electron-hole pairs recombination of BCTOZIS was inhibited, which may be ascribed to the establishment of a Z-scheme heterojunction and the presence of oxygen vacancy and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox center. The doping of Bi 3+ resulted in the adjustment of the valence band position of Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 from 1.98 V to 1.92 V. This adjustment enabled direct transfer of HLEEs generated in Ce 2 Ti 2 O 7 to the conduction band of ZnIn 2 S 4 for hydrogen production with a wavelength below 423 nm. The synergistic effect of conventional Z-scheme electron transfer and the unique utilization of HLEEs boosted the photocatalytic performance of BCTOZIS. This study affords an innovative insight for designing visible-light-driven photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity .

The high interfacial charge transfer barrier has been a primary thermodynamic obstacle in enhancing the catalytic performance of heterojunction materials. Optimizing the interfacial environment is a promising strategy to attain superior catalytic efficiency. Hence, a Bi/Bi2MoO6/Bi24O31Br10 (Bi/BMO/BOB) composite photocatalyst was constructed by introducing a Bi–O–Mo bridge bond between the BMO and BOB interfaces and modifying metal active sites on the surface of the complex. Bi/BMO/BOB has a good capacity for CO2 photoreduction to CO. The CO yield of the Bi/BMO/BOB photocatalyst is 68.29 μmol g−1 h−1, which is obviously higher than those of the pristine BMO and BOB. As proved by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterization, the Bi–O–Mo interface bridge bond adjusts the electronic structure of the contact interface and enhances the interface charge separation and transport rate. Moreover, the metal Bi nanoparticles synthesized through in situ reduction not only realize electron transfer and storage as electron collectors, but also strengthen the adsorption of CO2 molecules. The synergistic action of the two can allow the effective transfer of photogenerated electrons from BMO to BOB, which then accumulate on Bi. Such stepwise transfer of electrons increases the speed of photocatalytic reduction processes that involve multiple electrons, and effectively reduces the reaction energy barrier in the process of CO2 reduction. This mode of interatomic electron transfer bridges combined with the metal active sites not only solves the stability issues in bismuth-based semiconductors, but also aids in the development of more efficient photocatalytic systems for reduction of CO2.

A series of ternary composite photocatalysts of Bi 2 O 3 /Bi embedded in porous carbon (Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/PC) was prepared by the high-temperature pyrolysis of a bismuth-based metal organic framework (CAU-17(Bi)). They were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of organic Rhodamine B dye (RhB) in water under visible light. Results showed that the Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/PC composites with different Bi 2 O 3 /Bi ratios could be obtained through changing the extent of the carbothermal reduction of Bi 2 O 3 during pyrolysis. The photocatalystpyrolyzed at 800 o C showed the highest photocatalytic performance and had a wide applicable pH value range and excellent recyclability and stability. The components in the ternary composites exhibited a synergetic effect in the removal of RhB, where Bi 2 O 3 acted as a low-band gap semiconductor, metallic Bi transferred electrons generated by visible light excitation to the graphitic structure in porous carbon to inhibit the recombination of electrons with holes. The holes and peroxide radicals were the main active species. This study provides a new way for the design and preparation of visible-light active and high-performance photocatalysts for organic contaminant degradation in aqueous media by using metal organic frameworks as a multicomponent precursor.

Chlorophenols (CPs) treatment in water is a huge challenge due to its native robustness and harmful chlorinated by-products in degradation. In this work, we developed a specific BiO 2-x with high density Bi-O-Bi-O vacancy via a facile hydrothermal process. Extraordinary CPs removal ability under near infrared (NIR, >700 nm) is achieved over the as-prepared product. The presence of vacancies not only induced strong interactions between CPs and photocatalyst, but also promoted singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) generation. Furthermore, the generated 1 O 2 is found mainly originating from lattice oxygen release and the superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) oxidation from BiO 2-x . Such performance could be well-maintained under wide pH range as well as in the presence of different constitutes in water matrix. This work unravels a unique function of BiO 2-x photocatalyst for CPs decomposition and provide a rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts toward optimization of pollutants degradations.

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are promising for many applications in non-destructive testing, bio-imaging, and modern agriculture. However, developing self-activated NIR phosphors with high efficiency and excellent thermal stability is a great challenge for current research. In this work, a self-activated far-red to NIR emitting NaLaMgWO 6 phosphor is prepared by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method, whose luminescence properties are investigated in detail. In addition, the introduction of Bi 3+ ions as sensitizers enhances the emission intensity of far-red to NIR light (650-850 nm) through a Bi 3+ → WO 6 6– energy transfer design strategy, resulting in an increased internal quantum efficiency (IQE) from 56.4% to 64.8% and thermal stability from 54% to 72% (420 K). Finally, the combination of NaLaMgWO 6 :Bi 3+ with 365/460 nm commercial LED chip is prepared into NIR pc-LED devices, demonstrating satisfactory performance in the field of night vision detection and other wide range of practical applications.

A Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF Z-scheme heterojunction enriched with positive electric charges on the surface caused by In 3+ doping was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method. Photodegradation of antibiotics (tetracycline, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone), antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (AR E. coli ), the tetA gene they carried, and Fusarium graminearum was investigated. The experimental results showed that Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF sample possessed efficient photodegradation activity, with a removal of 10 7.34 CFU·mL −1 against AR E. coli in 80 min, 83.0 % and 4.89 log 10 copies·mL −1 for tetracycline and tetA gene in 120 min, respectively. Zeta potential test and adsorption capture experiment confirmed that Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF surface was rich in positive charges and had a strong nanoconfinement effect on negative-charged bacteria and ARGs, which shorten the time for the active substances produced by photocatalysis to come into contact with bacteria and ARGs, thereby improving the photocatalysis degradation effect. Finally, Bi/BiOCl/Bi(In 3+ )-MOF sample was applied and discussed for the removal of complex colonies from duck farm wastewater.

Bi metal attached BiOBr with oxygen defect (BiOBr(3)-Bi(x%, x = 10, 20, 30)) nanosheets was prepared via the hydrothermal process in this study. The different characterization techniques of x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer, electron spin resonance (ESR), field emission scanning electron microscope, and high resolution transmission electron microscope were used to distinguish the composition, crystal structure, and morphology of the samples. Under visible light irradiation, the BiOBr(3)-Bi(x%, x = 10, 20, 30) samples exhibited improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of colored dyes (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride. Such an improvement was ascribed to the widened visible light absorption and enhanced separation of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs because of the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and Bi metal with plasmon resonance effects. A possible photocatalytic mechanism of the quasi Z-scheme process was proposed on the basis of ESR measurements and radical-trapping experiments.
