Enhancing visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity of BiOI microspheres for NO removal by synchronous coupling with Bi metal and graphene

Gangqiang Zhu,Mirabbos Hojamberdiev,Shaolin Zhang,Syed Taj Ud Din,Woochul Yang

In order to further improve its photocatalytic activity , the BiOI microspheres were activated by a synchronous coupling of Bi metal and graphene under solvothermal conditions. The effects of the synthesis temperature (160–200 °C) on crystallinity, morphology, and photocatalytic activity were studied in particular. As expected, the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation removal under visible light irradiation than individual BiOI, and binary Bi-BiOI and BiOI/graphene composites. The photocatalytic efficiency for the NO removal of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C reached 51.8% within 30 min of visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst is attributed to (I) the efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons from BiOI and Bi to graphene, leading to the effective separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs and (II) the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles in the composite photocatalyst. Furthermore, the results of the scavenger experiments and DMPO-ESR spin-trapping measurements reveal that O 2 − radical species play the most critical role and holes serve as a secondary active species in the oxidative removal process of NO by 180BOI/GR composite under visible light irradiation.

Effect of different Bi/Ti molar ratios on visible-light photocatalytic activity of BiOI/TiO2 heterostructured nanofibers

Shunqin Luo,Chao Tang,Zhaohui Huang,Chen Liu,Jiawei Chen,Minghao Fang

In this study, bismuth oxyiodide/titanium dioxide (BiOI/TiO 2 ) heterostructures with different molar ratios of Bi and Ti were synthesized by electrospinning and hydrothermal methods . The samples thus synthesized were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy . The results confirmed the presence of the BiOI/TiO 2 heterojunction with Bi/Ti molar ratios of 0.20–1 by electrospinning and hydrothermal methods . Photocatalytic activity was also evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation. The 80% BiOI/TiO 2 heterostructure exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MB under visible-light irradiation.

Facile synthesis of AgI/BiOI-Bi2O3 multi-heterojunctions with high visible light activity for Cr(VI) reduction

Qi Wang,Xiaodong Shi,Enqin Liu,John C. Crittenden,Xiangjuan Ma,Yi Zhang,Yanqing Cong

AgI sensitized BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 composite (AgI/BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 ) with multi-heterojunctions was prepared using simple etching-deposition process. Different characterization techniques were performed to investigate the structural, optical and electrical properties of the as-prepared photocatalysts. It was found that the ternary AgI/BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 composite exhibited: (1) improved photocurrent response, (2) smaller band gap, (3) greatly reduced charge transfer resistance and (4) negative shift of flat band potential, which finally led to easier generation and more efficient separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs at the hetero-interfaces. Thus, for the reduction of Cr(VI), AgI/BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation at near neutral pH. AgI/BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 was optimized when the initial molar ratio of KI to Bi 2 O 3 and AgNO 3 to Bi 2 O 3 was 1:1 and 10%, respectively. The estimated k Cr(VI) on optimized AgI/BiOI-Bi 2 O 3 was about 16 times that on pure Bi 2 O 3 . Good stability was also observed in cyclic runs, indicating that the current multi-heterostructured photocatalyst is highly desirable for the remediation of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

An efficient electrostatic self-assembly of reduced graphene oxide-BiOI/Bi2O2CO3 p–n junction nanocomposites for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Zhao Qian,Lu Li,Wang Bin,Jiang Tingshun

The BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 p–n junctions were constructed by anion exchange method with Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 in situ growth on BiOI. Then, the surfaces of BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 samples were modified by negative charge with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) in an ethanol solution. Finally, the ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /graphene (RGO) ternary composites were fabricates by the simple hydrothermal reaction. The obtained photocatalysts were well characterized with the various characterization techniques to study their morphological, physical, optical, and photocurrent properties, and have been evaluated by investigating the degradation of Rhodamine B and tetracycline under visible irradiation. Compared with single BiOI, the BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 photocatalysts displays higher photocatalytic activity, due to the formation of the electric fields between p–n heterojunction to promote the migration of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /RGO composites with the best photocatalytic activities can be attributed to that the positively charged ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 were coupled with the negatively charged graphite oxide (GO) by electrostatically attraction to form the effectively interfacial contacts, causing the photocatalytic reaction sites increased, the range of light response expanded, the separation of photogenerated charge further improved. This work provides a feasible strategy for the construction of high efficiency semiconductor and RGO nanocomposite photocatalyst.

Fe3O4/BiOI/Ag Hollow Micromotors with Antibacterial Activity for Wound Healing

Hangyu Luo,Xiaofeng Liu,Zhenbang Meng,Han Wang,Qi He,Ri Chen,Wenxia Wang

Antibacterial micromotors with intriguing properties have represented frontiers of research in the biomedical and environmental fields. While single-powered micromotors still encounter some challenges for efficient propulsion in an intricate biological environment, herein, dual-propelled Fe3O4/BiOI/Ag (FBA) micromotors with hollow structure were synthesized via two facile steps without involving any sophisticated equipment. In this unique design, efficient propulsion of an FBA micromotor powered by magnetic stimuli/visible light was demonstrated. Impressively, the micromotor was capable of flexible propulsion with a remarkable velocity of 119.2 ± 5.9 μm s–1 without addition of toxic fuel. Taking advantage of the locomotion, bacterial capture ability, and photocatalytic capacity, 1 × 107 CFU mL–1 Escherichia coli (E. coli) can be totally inactivated by hollow FBA micromotors. The ideal universality of FBA for antibacterial application toward Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) was confirmed. Besides, the FBA micromotors manifested antibiofilm capacity toward E. coli, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and P. aeruginosa. It is worth mentioning that they also displayed ideal biocompatibility and lower toxicity. More importantly, the FBA micromotors can effectively accelerate S. aureus-infected wound healing without causing adverse effects. This work offers an innovative strategy for facile design of dual-propelled micromotors for various environmental and biomedical applications.

Efficient Electricity Generation and Degradation of Organic Pollutants in Wastewater Using Ag-BiOI Photoactivated Fuel Cell

Chun He,Yibing Gong,Shuzhen Li,Lingling Hu,Yichang Yang,Lianpeng Sun,Dong Shu

A visible-light-driven photo fuel cell (PFC) system, consisting of a Ag-BiOI/ITO photoanode and a Pt photocathode, was used to generate electricity by using wastewater organic compounds as electrolyte and fuel. The prepared BiOI and Ag-BiOI/ITO photoanodes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to examine the surface structure, chemical composition, and the properties of light absorption. The photoactivity of Ag-BiOI/ITO photoanodes was evaluated in the term of the electricity generation efficiency and degradation efficiency for recalcitrant organic pollutants. Compared with a BiOI/ITO photoanode, it was found that the efficiency of electricity generation using the Ag-BiOI/ITO photoanode was significantly higher in PFC system under visible light. Similarly, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of wastewater organic pollutants using Ag-BiOI/ITO photoanode was significantly higher than that of BiOI/ITO. The enhancement in the electricity generation efficiency and degradation efficiency for wastewater organic pollutants is attributed to the action of these dopants Ag on BiOI surface, which play a key role by driving the electrons to the cathode via an external circuit.

Synergistic microplastic degradation via Cu single atom-enhanced Janus BiOI/Fe₃O₄ microparticles with magnetic recyclability

Haidong Yu,Zhiqiang Hou,Longchao Zhuo,Xijun Liu,Yabin Zhang

Microplastic accumulation in water bodies is posing a serious threat to public health. Their chemical inertness impairs the effectiveness of current micro/nano-material-based remediation strategies. Especially in urban drinking water systems, microplastics constantly released and accumulated together with the complexity of pipeline networks challenges the recyclability and long-term stability of remediation materials and technology. To address this, Cu-single-atom magnetic Janus microparticles (CuMJMs) with flower-like crown morphology are engineered meticulously via a step-by-step strategy involving solvothermal growth and chemical deposition. The resulting CuMJMs feature a distinct Janus architecture composed of BiOI nanosheets and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, thereby delivering synergistic magnetic and photocatalytic functionalities. When subjected to a rotating magnetic field, CuMJMs are able to locomote collectively and recover rapidly in confined microenvironments. The incorporation of atomically dispersed Cu single atom not only enhances the number of active sites, but also promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Such abilities enable CuMJMs to degrade polyethylene (PE) efficiently, achieving a weight loss rate of 53.7 % beyond previous reports. This performance improvement is ascribed to singlet oxygen generation boosted by the Cu single atoms to facilitate oxidative degradation pathways, as supported by electron paramagnetic resonance and active species trapping test. While used in real water matrices, CuMJMs maintain both catalytic activity and magnetic responsiveness, underscoring their robustness and practical potential. This work establishes a new paradigm to active microplastic remediation, merging atomic-level catalytic precision with collective particle behavior to enable scalable and efficient environmental cleanup.

Construction of a hollow BiOI/TiO2/ZIF-8 heterojunction: Enhanced photocatalytic performance for norfloxacin degradation and mechanistic insight

Yu Zhu,Qinyun Xv,Dan Wang,Bingxin Sun,Yujia Wang,Zhiguo Han,Yongbo Gou,Jiayu Liu,Bingdong Li

The overuse of norfloxacin (NOR) has attracted wide attention because of the persistence and bio-accumulate in ecosystems and the negative impacts on human health. To solve the environmental issue, BiOI/TiO 2 p-n heterojunctions have been developed and decorated with a porous ZIF-8 to obtain novel hollow BiOI/TiO 2 /ZIF-8 heterojunctions, which were further characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM , XPS , BET, UV–vis DRS, photoluminescence , ESR , photocurrent and EIS analyses. The BiOI/TiO 2 /ZIF-8 heterojunctions exhibited evidently improved photocatalytic performance compared with pristine BiOI , TiO 2 and BiOI/TiO 2 composites under visible light irradiation. ZIF-8 plays a key role in both the enhancement of adsorption and the photocatalytic activity in NOR removal. ·O 2 - and ·OH radicals were the two dominating active species in the photocatalytic process according to the trapping experiments. In 2-BTZ system, large specific surface area, highly effective charge carrier migration with inhibiting recombination, more negative CB and positive VB to generate more active ·O 2 - and ·OH species resulted in superior photocatalytic activity. This work provides a new idea to design a kind of photocatalytic heterostructure with more active species for potential application in the field of environmental treatment.

Cu2O-BiOI isotype (p-p) heterojunction: Boosted visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical activity for non-enzymatic H2O2 sensing

Yi Zhang,Qi Wang,Dongming Liu,Qian Wang,Tong Li,Zhou Wang

A novel isotype (p-p) heterojunction, on the basis of Cu 2 O coupled with BiOI, has been designed and synthesized via a facile two-step electro-deposition approach at room temperature. The morphology, phase compositions and chemical bonding state were verified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The optimized Cu 2 O/BiOI hybrid electrode exhibited boosted photoelectrochemical (PEC) H 2 O 2 non-enzymatic sensing performance under visible light illumination, with a phenomenally broad linear range (1.99 µM ~ 17.54 mM), a high sensitivity of 213.87 µA mM −1  cm −2 , as well as a low detection limit of 0.44 µM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the sensor presented satisfying selectivity, repeatability, stability and its feasibility in real samples was corroborated. The photoelectrochemical sensing mechanism was clarified in the view of band structure and p-p heterojunction. Our work would enlighten the perspective research on the application of isotype heterojunction in PEC bio-sensing and provide a promising non-enzymatic biosensor platform for effective detection of H 2 O 2 in food, biomedical and environment analysis.

Porous two-dimensional CuSe@BiOI isotype heterojunction with highly exposed (1 0 2) facets for efficient photoelectrocatalytic CO2 reduction and photodetection

Xiu Gong,Shuhan Fan,Qu Yang,Jing-Liang Yang,Yanli chen,Xiaosi Qi,Hui Shen,Dan Ren,Mingkui Wang

Using photoelectrochemical technology to construct efficient photoelectric materials has aroused extensive research interest. In this study, we propose a two-dimensional porous CuSe@BiOI isotype heterojunction photocathode for CO 2 reduction to formic acid. The heterojunction was constructed by the epitaxial growth of high-quality oriented BiOI nanosheets onto the porous CuSe framework. The CuSe framework as a template to ensure the formation of the (1   0   2) facets of BiOI and the isotropic charge transport characteristics of the (1   0   2) surface greatly improve the efficiency of charge separation and transfer. This CuSe@BiOI isotype heterojunction electrode can efficiently reduce CO 2 to formic acid with a selectivity of up to 80.5 % in 0.5 M potassium bicarbonate aqueous solution. Meanwhile,   the performance of the photodetector based on CuSe@BiOI heterostructure is 6.97 × 10 11 Jones and a response rate of 87.13 mA W −1 . This finding provides a new approach to designing stable heterojunction photoelectrocatalysts with isotropy.

Study on Photocatalytic Activity of Ag2O Modified BiOI/g-C3N4 Composite Photocatalyst for Degradation of RhB

Wang Yan,Zheng Zhanshen,Li Yuanliang,Jia Pengwei,Liu Tong

Degradation of harmful pollutants is the key to water pollution control. Herein, a series of BiOI/g-C 3 N 4 -Ag 2 O (BCNA) heterojunction photocatalysts were prepared by a simple liquid-phase synthesis method for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible light. The crystal structure, morphology, and elemental composition of the synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by x-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental results showed that compared with g-C 3 N 4 and BiOI, BiOI/g-C 3 N 4 -Ag 2 O composite showed the best photocatalytic activity when the Ag 2 O loading was 14.68 wt.%, and the removal rate of rhodamine B (RhB) could reach 98% after 30 min, and the photodegradation showed good stability through the cycle tests. In addition, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence excitation spectrum (PL), and photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed that the enhanced photoactivity of BiOI/ g-C 3 N 4 -Ag 2 O is due to the formation of ternary heterojunction, which not only amplifies the visible light response of g-C 3 N 4 but also improves the separation and migration rate of photoinduced carriers. Finally, a possible mechanism of charge separation and transfer for ternary heterojunction photocatalysts was proposed. This study extends the application range of g-C 3 N 4 for RhB degradation and provided a new opportunity for environmental remediation.

Photocatalytic Enhancement and Recyclability in Visible-Light-Responsive 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n Heterojunctions via a Z-Scheme Charge Transfer Mechanism

Shuo Yang,Tianna Wu,Kaiyue Li,Ping Huang,Wenhui Li,Yuquan Zhuo,Keyan Liu,Ziwen Yang,Donglai Han

With the intensification of the energy crisis and the growing concern over environmental pollution, particularly the discharge of organic dye pollutants in industrial wastewater, photocatalytic degradation of these contaminants using solar energy has emerged as an effective, eco-friendly solution. In this study, we successfully synthesized 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions via a simple precipitation method and a high-temperature calcination method. The unique 2D structures of g-C3N4nanosheets (NSs) and BiOI NSs, coupled with the synergistic effect between the two materials, significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation performance of the heterojunctions under simulated sunlight. The band structures, as determined by Tauc curves, Mott–Schottky curves and XPS-VB analysis, revealed a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism that efficiently reduced charge carrier recombination and improved electron–hole separation. The photocatalytic activity of 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions for rhodamine B (Rh B) degradation reached 99.7% efficiency within 60 min, a 2.37-fold and 1.27-fold improvement over pristine BiOI NSs and g-C3N4NSs, respectively. Furthermore, the heterojunction exhibited excellent recyclability stability, with the degradation efficiency decreasing by only 1.2% after five cycles. Radical scavenging experiments confirmed the involvement of superoxide radicals (∙O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) as the primary reactive species in the degradation process. This work highlights the potential of 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic applications in environmental remediation.
