Botrytis cinerea causes gray mold in many fruit and vegetable crops. We previously found that Seselin (SL) displayed antifungal activity against B. cinerea (EC50 = 6.1 μg·mL–1), and this study investigated the effects of Ca2+ and the Ca2+/CN signaling pathway on its antifungal activity against B. cinerea. The results indicated that exogenous Ca2+, Cyclosporine A, and Verapamil reduced the sensitivity of SL against B. cinerea; SL significantly reduced the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in the hyphae; the sensitivity of strains ΔbcCCH1 and ΔbcMID1 to SL were significantly increased; and the expressions of CCH1, MID1, CNA, PMC1, and PMR1 genes of the Ca2+/CN signaling pathway were significantly downregulated by SL treatment. Hence, SL is a potential compound for developing fungicides against B. cinerea. SL dramatically reduces intracellular Ca2+ concentration and disturbs Ca2+ homeostasis, leading to cell death. The Ca2+/CN signaling pathway plays an important role in the antifungal activity of SL against B. cinerea.

Organic dye detection requires high sensitivity, low-cost equipment, simplified procedures, and real-time capabilities; thus, electrochemical methods are gradually emerging in this field instead of chromatography. However, much attention has been paid to toxic and complex metal or noble-metal hybrid materials for constructing electrochemical sensors, which is extremely limiting for practical applications. In this study, a metal-free electrocatalyst, MWNTs with carboxylic groups (MWNTs–COOH), was prepared through surface oxidation in a piranha solution and a simple hydrothermal treatment. The obtained MWNTs–COOH possessed superior hydrophilicity, increased conductivity and substantial active carbon or carboxylic group sites, as determined by characterization using Raman spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, electrochemical surface area analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The above advantages enabled MWNTs–COOH to exhibit excellent electrochemical activities, with a satisfactory utilization for determining trace Rhodamine B (RhB), showing a lower calculated detection limitation of 2.66 nM and a wider linear range from 0.05 to 850 μM with outstanding specificity and reproducibility. Furthermore, it was found that the carboxyl group on the MWNTs would probably have triggered the electron redistribution and exposed more adjacent active carbon sites, which facilitate the electrocatalytic function to CN on the RhB directly.

A bacterial strain , CN-3, was isolated from petroleum-contaminated sediment in Bohai Bay, China. Morphological, physiological and phylogenetic analyses indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Dietzia . It was capable of utilizing a wide range of alkanes (C 14 –C 31 ), aromatic compounds and crude oil as the sole carbon and energy sources. The bacterium showed high degradation rate (>80%) of the saturated hydrocarbons of crude oil in the pH range of 6–9. The degradation rate was hardly affected at a NaCl concentration up to 85 g L −1 , indicating that the strain can tolerate high salinities . The real-time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results showed that the CYP153 genes could be significantly induced by C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 26 and pristane, whereas the transcription level of alk B gene was increased moderately with C 14 , C 15 , C 16 , C 26 and pristane induction condition. A high degradation extent, wide substrate range and facile conditions enhanced the potential for this bacterial strain to be used in the bioremediation of crude oil pollution.

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have recently attracted extensive interests as a new class of cathode materials for rechargeable batteries. Copper hexacyanoferrate, a typical Prussian blue analogue with the chemical formula Cu 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 , has been synthesized by solution precipitation method and investigated as a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. The galvanostatic cycling tests show a specific capacity of 44 mA h g −1 at a current density of 20 mA g −1 , and the capacity retention can be 57.1% after 50 cycles. The material can also deliver a specific capacity of 37 mA h g −1 and 25 mA h g −1 at a rate of 50 mA g −1 and 100 mA g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the material exhibits a high reduction peak at 3.32 V vs. Na + /Na, which brings more power to sodium-ion batteries. The data indicate the as-prepared material is capable of realizing the single electron redox capacity due to the reduction of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . All of the findings suggest a possible use of Cu 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 nanoparticles as environmental friendly and cost-effective cathode material, which also open new perspectives to develop cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

A novel and sustainable synthesis of a Pd/CN@MgO catalyst is presented here, offering a bifunctional catalyst with high catalytic activity towards a tandem aldol condensation–hydrogenation reaction of furfural with acetone in a one-pot reactor. The incorporation of biomass based hydrophilic N-containing carbon (CN) in the catalyst provides a subtle but elegant method to control the good water dispersibility, the reaction stability, and the ultrafine dispersion of palladium particles (2.2 nm in average size) in the bifunctional catalyst Pd/CN@MgO. With such improved features, an impressive 99% furfural conversion and 95% selectivity for the hydrogenated products (saturated ketones) was obtained by using Pd/CN@MgO as a novel bifunctional catalyst in the reported tandem reaction. This catalyst design strategy and the high efficiency of the catalyst in the reported system offer potential for the preparation of bi/multifunctional catalysts and the one-pot synthesis of bioderived intermediates.

Graphical In this study, a straightforward coprecipitation method was employed to synthesize the bimetallic catalyst MnO@Co-CN, which demonstrates high efficiency in catalyzing the direct oxidative esterification of HMF to produce FDMC with a yield reaching 90.3%. The synergistic interactions between the dual metals during the reaction significantly enhance the catalytic performance for optimal oxidative esterification. As a versatile platform molecule derived from biomass, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has the potential to be transformed into a variety of chemicals. Of these, furan-2,5-dimethylcarboxylate (FDMC) stands out as an excellent precursor for the synthesis of poly(ethylene furandicarboxylate) (PEF), a polymer with broad applications in the production of various polymeric materials. However, a majority of studies have focused on the use of noble metal catalysts to achieve the direct oxidative esterification of HMF for the production of FDMC. Given the scarcity and high cost of noble metal catalysts, there is a pressing need to develop non-noble metal catalysts to efficiently facilitate the direct oxidative esterification of HMF. Accordingly, a bimetallic catalyst, MnO@Co-CN, was prepared in this paper by a simple coprecipitation method, and a 90.3% FDMC yield was obtained under optimal conditions. The findings revealed that in the oxidative esterification of HMF, MnO x predominantly adsorbs the reactants onto the catalyst surface, whereas CoO x is primarily responsible for the oxidation. The synergistic interaction between Mn and Co enhances the catalytic performance, leading to the superior oxidative esterification outcomes. This work offers a cost-effective, scalable method for FDMC synthesis, highlighting potential for industrial applications.

Polluted water poses a significant threat to human health and ecological balance, necessitating the development of efficient and cost-effective water purification technologies. This study synthesized a composite photocatalytic material (CMF@Fe x O y -CN) using a microwave radiation synchrotron cooling technique. This material incorporates iron oxide-doped g-C 3 N 4 and in-situ micro-fibrillated cellulose, exhibiting high dispersion stability and magnetic recyclability. The material demonstrates a bandgap energy ( E g ) of 2.69 eV. Remarkably, 25 mg/20 mL of CMF@Fe x O y -CN (with 40 wt% Fe x O y -CN loading) achieved a 97.9 % degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) within 1 h. Even after 10 cycles, the degradation efficiency remained high at 89.4 %. The superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) played a critical role in Rh B degradation, facilitated by the stable dispersion of CMF. The issue of low photocatalytic efficiency, often caused by poor dispersion of photocatalysts, was addressed through the in-situ micro-fibrillation of cellulose, offering a green and economical solution. This study provides a theoretical foundation for applying photocatalysis in water purification.

Mn-based catalysts have been extensively studied in advanced oxidation processes based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidants, demonstrating their significant potential for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater. In this study, an amorphous MnO2-based composite catalyst (MnO2/CN@SiO2) was prepared and used to activate PMS for degrading levofloxacin (LEV). The effects of reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, and solution pH, on LEV degradation were comprehensively investigated. The interference of water components, e.g.,NO3−,SO42−, Cl−,CO32−, and humic acid, on the degradation efficiency of LEV was analyzed, and the stability of the catalysts was explored by cycling experiments. Finally, radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy were employed to elucidate the contribution of active species to the degradation reaction process. A non-radical-based pathway for LEV degradation was proposed based on these results.

Electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3‒) reduction reaction (eNO3RR) is a promising route for ammonia (NH3) synthesis to alternate Haber-Bosch process. It is important to design catalysts with high efficiency and strong selectivity for the preparation of NH3 via the eNO3RR. Herein, a ZIF-derived nitrogen-doped carbon/cobalt sulfide electrocatalyst, CoS@CN, with a hollow cage structure synthesized by vulcanization etching, is presented as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for eNO3RR. CoS@CN shows outstanding selectivity and stability with a large NH3 yield of 4.74 mg h-1 mcat-1 at -0.75 V vs. RHE and a high Faradaic efficiency of 97.88% at -0.35 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M NaOH with 200 ppm NO3‒. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that CoS@CN has a narrower bond gap (0.16 eV) and lower barrier potential determining step (0.71 eV). The S atoms function as bridges connecting the charge repository C atoms to the active site Co atoms, as is more favorable for NH3 synthesis through the eNO3RR. It was demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically that the S element plays an important role. The introduction of the S element could not only modulate the electronic structure of the catalysts, but also modulate the morphology of the catalysts to a hollow cage structure, as facilitates the proceeding of eNO3RR. This work offers a promising strategy for designing high-performance eNO3RR catalysts for electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis and the waste water treatment.

Cheap and advanced electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are vitally significant but challenging for seawater electrolysis. Herein, a glow discharge N2 plasma is used to etch the [Fe(CN)6]4– group of the NiCoFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) framework by highly reactive nitrogen radicals (the catalyst named N2-NiCoFe-PBA). Abundant CN vacancies (VCN) generated by this etching effectively suppress the Fe loss from N2-NiCoFe-PBA, while the lack of VCN results in the Fe leaching from the NiCoFe-PBA precursor during the anodic process. Consequently, N2-NiCoFe-PBA and NiCoFe-PBA are transformed into real active phases of NiCoFeOOH and NiCoOOH during the OER process, respectively. Theoretical calculations display that NiCoFeOOH has superior adsorption capacity toward OH– over Cl– to NiCoOOH, which is beneficial to excellent OER activity and anticorrosion performance in alkaline seawaters. In alkaline simulated and natural seawater, N2-NiCoFe-PBA exhibits much better OER performance with smaller η100 (293 and 323 mV) than NiCoFe-PBA (405 and 434 mV). N2-NiCoFe-PBA can run stably over 110 h in an alkaline high-salty electrolyte (1 M KOH + 2.0 M NaCl) at 250 mA cm–2. This study provides a modification method without destroying the structure to develop efficient and stable OER catalysts for seawater electrolysis.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) photosynthesis coupled with biomass upgrading is a promising alternative to traditional oxidative routes, yet its efficiency is fundamentally constrained by slow water oxidation kinetics and reliance on sacrificial agents. Herein, a Ni-doped Bi 2 WO 6 /graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-BWO/CN) heterojunction is developed to investigate the coupling of H 2 O 2 photosynthesis and glucose oxidation, with an H 2 O 2 production rate of 2.275 mM h − 1 (2.5 times higher than BWO), alongside a glucose conversion rate of 27 % and 82 % selectivity toward arabinose. The enhanced performance is attributed to the Ni doping in the BWO lattice, which modulates the electronic structure and suppresses charge recombination. In situ FT-IR spectra reveal a superoxide-mediated two-electron reduction pathway for H 2 O 2 synthesis as well as glucose oxidation via ·O 2 − -mediated and ·OH-driven intermediate mechanisms. This strategy advances the sustainable production of H 2 O 2 and high-value chemicals through rational photocatalyst design.

Cyanide (CN − ) is a highly toxic compound that exists in many substances and is harmful to the environment and human health. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop excellent CN − ion probes, especially solvent-induced on–off fluorescent probes. Based on the condensation reaction of indolo[2,1-b][1,3]oxazine molecules with aldehydes, probes ( E )-13a-(2-(9-ethyl-9 H -carbazol-3-yl)vinyl)-14,14-dimethyl-10-nitro-13a,14-dihydro-8 H -benzo[e]benzo[5,6][1,3]oxazino[3,2-a]indole (NCO) and ( E )-13a-(2-(9-benzyl-9 H -carbazol-3-yl)vinyl)-14,14-dimethyl-10-nitro-13a,14-dihydro-8 H -benzo[e]benzo[5,6][1,3]oxazino[3,2-a]indole (NBO) were synthesized to detect CN − . Compared with other cyanogen ion probes, NCO and NBO have special carbazole ring structures and large conjugate systems. When CN − is added to the probe-detection solution, color changes that are visible to the naked eye can occur. The UV–vis spectrum test using differential spectroscopy shows that the probe (i) has excellent solvent-induced switching characteristics and stability (CH 3 OH–H 2 O) and (ii) high selectivity, anti-interference ability, and sensitivity for the detection of CN − . The fluorescence limit of detections (LODs) are 1.05 µM for NCO and 1.34 µM for NBO. The UV LODs are 0.83 µM for NCO and 0.87 µM for NBO. Fluorescence spectroscopy shows that the probe has remarkable fluorescence properties. Fluorescence titration experiments, liver cancer cell (Hep G2) imaging, and cytotoxicity experiments all show that the probes have high biocompatibility, low toxicity, high cell permeability, and high sensitivity for the detection of CN − in cells. In addition, NCO and NBO have been successfully used for the detection of cyanogenic glycosides in the seeds of ginkgo, crabapple, apple, and cherry. Test strips were fabricated to detect CN − . After adding CN − , the color of the test strip changed significantly—from brown to light yellow; thus, the test strips have a high application value in the fields of drug quality control, drug safety testing, and pharmacological research.
