Asymmetrical alternating current electrochemically-mediated washing method for sustainable remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil

Yunhao Xie,Lun Lu,Baoliang Chen

The demands for genuine remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil have triggered extensive studies in the soil washing method. However, numerous soil washing methods show poor sustainability for target soil, due to the tremendous cost, hidden secondary pollution and severe soil deterioration. Here, an asymmetrical alternating current electrochemically-mediated remediation platform (ACRP) is developed by fabricating an amidoxime-functionalized electrode (Ami-electrode). The real soil contaminated with 1200 mg/kg Cr(VI) is remediated efficiently to less than safety level (30 mg/kg), meanwhile no exorbitant soil nutrient loss is observed and no secondary pollution occurs. Furthermore, the consumption of washing effluents for the ACRP method is 24 times lower than the traditional washing method. Ami-electrode with asymmetrical alternating current promote the electrocatalytic efficiency by inhibiting the Coulomb repulsion between Cr(VI) species and cathode. With the aid of Ami-electrode and positive bias, Cr(VI) species in effluents are adsorbed on chelating site. By subsequent negative bias, Cr element is reduced and recycled in the less hazardous form of amorphous Cr(III) hydroxide, and effluents are regenerate concurrently in a cyclic system. Durability experiment and cost calculation verify the exceptional sustainability and feasibility for remediation practices. This work provides a sustainable remediation method for Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, and then paves the way to develop electrochemically soil remediation platform for practical applications.

SnS2 nanoplates/SnO2 nanotubes composites as efficient visible light-driven photocatalysts for Cr(VI) reduction

Qin Na,Jing Kaiqiang,Chen Rui,Xiong Jinhua,Liang Ruowen,Li Zhaohui,Wu Ling

Abstract SnS 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites have been successfully prepared via a hydrothermal method using electrospun SnO 2 nanotubes as both substrates and reactants. The ratios of the nanocomposites are controlled by varying the concentration of thioacetamide during the solvothermal synthesis processes. The as-prepared SnS 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites exhibit considerable improvement on the photocatalytic activities for the reduction of aqueous Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation. Their photoactivities are also much higher than that of SnS 2 nanoplates and a physical mixture of SnO 2 and SnS 2 . In particular, the SnS 2 /SnO 2 -B sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity. After visible light irradiation for 60 min, the reduction rate has reached about 100%. The photoelectrochemical analyses further show that the high photocatalytic activity of the SnS 2 /SnO 2 -B sample can be ascribed to the unique structural features and the intimate interfacial contact between SnS 2 and SnO 2 , which is more effective separation of the photo-generated carriers. Modeling rapidly discriminative strategies of Cr contaminated soils through machine learning

Jianle Wang,Huiqun Zhang,Xiaoyao Wang,Xueming Liu,Hong Deng

Soil washing is employed to prevent the issue of Cr re-oxidation following the remediation of Cr-contaminated soil by transferring contaminants from the soil to the wash solution through the dissolving action. Nevertheless, rapidly screening effective washing agents remains challenging. This study conducted batch experiments to gather dataset on key factors (soil properties, Cr sequential extraction and type of washing agent) and Cr content after washing with 250 experimental data points. We developed 12 machine learning models, among which the light gradient boosting machine model excelled in predicting Cr content after washing, determining soil suitability for washing. Furthermore, the adaptive boosting and random forest models preferably predicted Cr content after various washing agents treatments, facilitating optimal detergent identification. Based on the feature analysis, soil pH, exchangeable potassium , reactive iron oxides , and Cr sequential extraction can account for most of the differences in washing treatment. To further validate our model, we used an additional 60 experimental data points, including soil properties with pH values beyond the range of the initial 250 data points. The R 2 value of the predicted fit to the actual results was 0.801. This study provides the feasibility of improving the efficiency of technical remediation of Cr-contaminated soils.

Three dimensional BC/rGA aerogel: preparation, characterization, and adsorption of Cr(VI)

Che Naiju,Liu Na,Li Yinhui,Li Chao,Liu Yanli,Li Chengliang

Graphene-based composite aerogel doped with other low-cost materials can reduce the cost and promote the use in water treatment. This work prepared ball-milled biochar/reduced graphene oxide aerogel (BC/rGA) using GO and low-cost ball-milled biochar (BC) in a certain proportion with the freeze-thawing technique and sol–gel method, and applied BC/rGA on the Cr(VI) removal from aquatic environments. The characterization results showed that aerogel had a honeycomb briquette three-dimension (3D) and mesoporous structure with interconnected pores, and proved the preparation progress of aerogel in principle. Compared with GO, rGA and BC/rGA had better adsorption performance with 3D structure and well-developed pores, and BC/rGA with the mixture ratio of BC and GO of 1:4 was more appropriate. The adsorption kinetics data of rGA and BC/rGA (1:4) were fitting well with the pseudo-second-order model ( R 2  > 0.951), and the isotherm adsorption results were fitting the Langmuir model well ( R 2  > 0.974). The results demonstrated that the adsorption process was monolayer and endothermic adsorption involving chemisorption. Additionally, the adsorption capacities of rGA and BC/rGA (1:4) at solution pH 2 were 3.71 and 3.89 times greater than those at solution pH 8, respectively. High background ion strength and low temperature slightly inhibited the adsorption of Cr(VI) by both rGA and BC/rGA (1:4) . The adsorption mechanisms of Cr(VI) on rGA and BC/rGA (1:4) were electrostatic interaction, reduction and ion exchange. The use of BC/rGA could reduce the cost and promote the green reuse of agricultural waste. Overall, BC/rGA could be used as a promising green adsorbent alternative for the feasible treatment of heavy metal contaminated water. Graphical Abstract

Highly efficient immobilization of NZVI onto bio-inspired reagents functionalized polyacrylonitrile membrane for Cr(VI) reduction

Peng Liu,Xiangyu Wang,Jun Ma,Huiling Liu,Ping Ning

To provide superior substrates and determine the specific species of immobilized nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) system, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane was functionalized by bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and poly( l -DOPA) (PDOPA) for efficient immobilization of NZVI. The synthesized composites were denoted as PAN/PDA-NZVI (PPN) and PAN/PDOPA-NZVI (PON), respectively. Analyses of XRD, SEM/EDS and XPS show that the aggregation and release of iron nanoparticles had been successfully controlled by improving membrane hydrophilcity and iron-chelating capacity via the graft of functionalized groups (i.e. OH and COOH) of PDA and PDOPA on PAN membrane. Both PPN and PON composites exhibited superior reactivity for Cr(VI) removal (Cr(VI) removal efficiency and reaction rate were 2.21–2.22 and 9.90–10.14 times higher than that of bare NZVI, respectively). The stability and recyclability of PPN and PON composites could be maintained over repeated cycles. Further analyses indicate that PON is more capable for Cr(VI) elimination than PPN due to the proprietary carboxyl of l -DOPA. With the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline, membrane-chelated Fe(II) was determined to be the major species in Cr(VI) removal system, accounting for 56.9% and 53.8% with regard to PPN and PON composites, and Fe 0 was responsible for the reduction of residual Cr(VI). Analyse of reacted composites revealed that Cr(VI) was completely converted into Cr(III), followed by formation of dominant Cr(III)/Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides and partial desorption from NZVI reactive sites. This study suggested that both synthesized PPN and PON composites have potentials for Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater treatment .

Unraveling the promotive mechanism of nitrogen-doped porous carbon from wasted lignin for Cr (VI) removal

Huirong Zhang,Yi Shen,Xiaokai Shi,Jinlei Cui,Baofeng Wang,Yanxia Guo,Dongke Zhang,Fangqin Cheng

Persistent environmental pollution by heavy metals, particularly Cr (VI), poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. The development of high-performance, cost-effective adsorbents from sustainable materials remains a critical challenge in the field of Cr (VI) remediation. This study investigates the influence of pyrrolic-N (N-5) within nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon (N-HPC) on its adsorption capacity. Results indicate that N-HPC variants with a higher N-5 content exhibit superior adsorption abilities. The optimal sample demonstrated an exceptional adsorption capacity of 386.2 mg/g for Cr (VI). Even after seven regeneration cycles, this N-HPC variant maintained a remarkable 77.8 % removal efficiency for Cr (VI), highlighting its robust stability and selectivity. The relationship between the physicochemical properties of N-5 and N-HPC was thoroughly examined, revealing that N-5 plays a crucial role in the adsorption process. Due to its high electronegativity, nitrogen-doping into the carbon framework generates a dipole moment, enhancing the electronegativity of N-HPC, altering its local electron density and polarity, increasing specific surface area, carbon defect density, and ion exchange capacity. These factors collectively contribute to significant improvements in pore filling, ion exchange efficiency, and electrostatic adsorption by N-HPC. The reduction complexation mechanism emerges as the dominant factor in the adsorption process. N-5 not only provides reducing electrons as an electron donor, facilitating the continuous conversion of Cr (VI) to Cr (III), but also acts as an adsorption active site, complexing Cr to the surface of N-HPC. This synergistic effect strengthens the reduction complexation, enhances adsorption performance, and improves the regeneration cycle and adsorption selectivity for Cr.

Enhancing Cr(VI) removal performance of Ti3C2Tx through structural modification by using a spray freezing method

Linjie Yi,Hongwei Wang,Xianliang Ren,GaoBin Liu,Hongen Nian,Zhiqin Zheng,Fang Wu

Structural modification is expected to be a facile way to enhance the adsorption performance of MXene. In this work, the structural modification of Ti3C2Tx was carried out by a spray freezing method, and two kinds of nano-structure (spherical and flaky) of Ti3C2Tx were prepared by adjusting the solution concentration of Ti3C2Tx. Then the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of the spherical and flaky Ti3C2Tx was investigated, respectively. It is found that flaky Ti3C2Tx was produced with a Ti3C2Tx concentration of 3 mg mL−1, while spherical Ti3C2Tx was obtained with a concentration of 6 mg mL−1. The long diameter of flaky Ti3C2Tx is about 8–10 μm, and the specific surface area is 17.81 m2 g−1. While spherical Ti3C2Tx had a diameter of about 1–4 μm and a specific surface area of 17.07 m2 g−1. The optimized structure of flaky and spherical Ti3C2Tx improves the maximum adsorption capacity by 97% and 33%, respectively, compared with the few-layer Ti3C2Tx. The maximum adsorption capacity of flaky Ti3C2Tx was 928 mg g−1, while that of spherical Ti3C2Tx was 626 mg g−1. The adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures decreased with the increase of pH, and reached the maximum value at pH = 2; meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on flaky Ti3C2Tx was very fast, reaching equilibrium in 3 min, while spherical Ti3C2Tx took 5 min. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on both Ti3C2Tx structures belonged to the monolayers, heat-absorbing chemical adsorption, and the diffusion process of Cr(VI) was regulated by the external diffusion and internal diffusion of particles. Its adsorption mechanism was the combination of reductive adsorption and electrostatic adsorption.

Urea-modified metal-organic framework of type MIL-101(Cr) for the preconcentration of phosphorylated peptides

Yang Xiaoqing,Xia Yan

Mass spectrometry (MS) is the most powerful tool in phosphoproteomics research. However, phosphopeptides usually are present in low concentrations and their preconcentration therefore is highly desired. We describe a two-step method for the synthesis of a metal organic framework of the type MIL-101(Cr) that is modified with urea (then designated as MIL-101(Cr)-UR 2 ). It possesses large surface area, good solvent stability and high affinity for some phosphates. Due to the presence of modified urea functions, this material allows for selective and effective enrichment of phosphorylated peptides. It was successfully applied to the enrichment of phosphopeptides from non-fat-milk. The method was applied to the detection of phosphopeptides in a tryptic digest of β-casein where is showed a detection sensitivity as low as 10 −10  M. A two step method was designed to synthesis MIL-101(Cr)-UR 2 and the prepared green solid was successfully applied to recognize phosphopeptides. Cr-Doped CeO2 Nanocrystals Supported on Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Xiaodong Hao,Tingting Wei,Qiheng Ma,Yuhao Zhou,Yang Yang,Yunxiang Jing,Xinyi Feng,Xishuo Zhang,Jin Zhang,Deqiang Yin,Zhen-Hong He,Shufang Ma,Bingshe Xu

The advancement of cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is pivotal in fostering the progress of clean energy technologies. In this study, we present a reforming approach aimed at facile fabrication of the Cr-CeO2/rGO electrocatalyst. This involves incorporating a limited quantity of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to serve as a conductive scaffold for CeO2 nanocrystals (NCs) while also introducing Cr, a transition metal, as an active dopant. It is found that the introduction of Cr and rGO induces charge transfer, leading to enhanced electrical conductivity and the creation of additional active sites on the nanocomposite surface. The synergy between rGO and CeO2, along with Cr doping in CeO2, significantly improves HER performance. The representative sample of the Cr(5%)-CeO2/rGO catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential of 83 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, a low Tafel slope of 81 mV dec–1, and excellent stability under alkaline conditions. Significantly, this value of overpotential is reduced by 81 and 127 mV compared to those of the CeO2/rGO nanocomposites and the pristine CeO2 NCs. Theoretical density functional theory calculations additionally validate the phenomenon of charge transfer and improved HER properties, with Cr-CeO2 displaying a favorable Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) for H* adsorption. This study offers novel insights into the design of precious metal electrocatalysts featuring functional interfaces and a wealth of active sites, holding great promise for industrial applications in clean energy conversion and storage.

Wei Zhao,Yuxiang Yang,Yanbin Li,Yimin Liu,Yuezhou Wei,Xinpeng Wang,Deqian Zeng

The advancement of efficient photocatalysts is essential for tackling global energy and environmental issues. In this work, a unique sheet-on-sheet Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solution strategy, demonstrating significantly improved photocatalytic performance for H2 generation and Cr(VI) reduction. The optimal 5% Cd(OH)2/CdS obtained an impressive H2 production rate of 3475 μmol·g-1·h-1 under visible light, marking a 6.3 times increase compared to CdS. Additionally, the kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction were markedly accelerated, with a rate constant of 0.2803 min-1, representing a 5.7 times improvement over pure CdS. Moreover, the 2D/2D Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst exhibited exceptional stability, maintaining high photocatalytic activity over multiple reaction cycles. Experimental findings and DFT calculations revealed the charge transfer mechanism between CdS nanosheets and Cd(OH)2 cocatalyst. This work provides insights into designing high-performance CdS-based nanophotocatalysts for water splitting and environmental remediation.

Poly(ionic liquids-acrylic acid)-modified MIL-101(Cr) metal−organic frameworks: Preparation and efficient adsorption of europium☆

Xiayu Liang,Aylin M. Deliormanlı,Qingle Zeng

A novel composite material, Poly(IL-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), combining metal-organic framework, polymeric ionic liquid and acrylic acid, was synthesized for the selective and efficient adsorption of rare earths europium(III) (Eu 3+ ). Characterization of the materials was carried out using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The results demonstrate successful incorporation of the polymeric ionic liquid onto the material surface while preserving the crystal structure and morphology of MIL-101(Cr). Adsorption experiments were conducted to explore parameters including solution pH, initial Eu 3+ concentration, and duration, with comprehensive analyses of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms. Findings reveal that Poly(IL1-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), Poly(IL3-AA)@MIL-101(Cr), and Poly(IL5-AA)@MIL-101(Cr) achieve adsorption equilibrium for Eu 3+ at approximately 9 h with an equilibrium pH of 6.2. The adsorption of Eu 3+ predominantly follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Moreover, the prepared composite material exhibits superior adsorption selectivity for Eu 3+ over other metal ions in the mixture (K + , Mg 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , La 3+ , and Nd 3+ ). Even after five adsorption-desorption cycles, the composite material maintains satisfactory adsorption performance.

Algae decorated TiO2/Ag hybrid nanofiber membrane with enhanced photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) removal under visible light

Lei Wang,Changbo Zhang,Feng Gao,Gilles Mailhot,Gang Pan

Algae as an abundant natural biomass, more attention has been paid to explore its potential application in environmental pollutants treatment. This work prepared the algae-TiO 2 /Ag bionano hybrid material by loading algae cells on the ultrafine TiO 2 /Ag chitosan hybrid nanofiber mat. For the first time, the synergistic photocatalytic effect of fresh algae and TiO 2 /Ag nanomaterial was investigated by removal of Cr(VI). The addition of algae significantly improved the photo-removal of Cr(VI) in the system with TiO 2 /Ag hybrid nanomaterial under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic mechanism was studied. The photogenerated reactive oxygen species were quantified and the addition of algae apparently decreased the yields of OH to 31.0   μM, while improved the yields of 1 O 2 and O 2 − in the reaction system with TiO 2 /Ag hybrid nanofiber mats. The change of superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde content in algae indicated that TiO 2 /Ag could impose oxidative stress and cause lipid peroxidation in algae cells. During the course of irradiation, algae released substances could act as scavenger for holes, thus inhibited the recombination of hole/electron and enhanced the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by electrons on TiO 2 surface. Algae was simultaneously photodegraded in the system and the resulting O 2 − , organic free radicals could promote the reduction of Cr(VI). This functional hybrid nanofiber mat was easily recovered and maintained a great photocatalytic activity on the five successive cycles. This algae-photocatalyst hybrid material has promising applications potential in heavy metal removal and organic pollutants treatment.
