Carbaryl, a broad-spectrum carbamate insecticide, is widely used to enhance agricultural productivity; however, its hazardous residues pose significant food safety risks. In this study, dual-emission nanohybrids (CD@AuNCs) were synthesized by leveraging the active groups on CDs and BSA-AuNCs. The nanohybrids facilitated the ratiometric fluorescence detection of Carbaryl based on an aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIE) mechanism. The sensor exhibited a linear range of 1–100 mg/kg and a detection limit of 0.95 mg/kg, which is below the maximum residue limit for Carbaryl (5 mg/kg, Chinese National Standard GB 2763–2021). The method was validated through recovery experiments in actual food samples, yielding results consistent with those obtained by LC-MS analysis. This sensitive, stable, and ratiometric fluorescence method thus offers a reliable analytical strategy for detecting Carbaryl in food matrices, demonstrating significant potential for applications in food safety monitoring and pesticide residue analysis.

V6O13 nanobelts with good crystallinity and distinct facets were prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and were first found to possess the peroxidase-mimicking activity. A simple colorimetric sensor using V6O13 nanobelts as catalyst was established for detecting Cd(II) and Pb(II) simultaneously in actual water samples. It was confirmed that V6O13 nanobelts could generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) from H2O2 to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce a blue product. Heavy metals such as Cd(II) or Pb(II) could inhibit the peroxidase-mimicking activity of V6O13 nanobelts, making the sensing solution light blue or even colorless. The catalytic reaction of V6O13 nanobelts was exhibited to be a ping-pong mechanism, and the effect of heavy metals on V6O13 nanobelts was consistent with noncompetitive inhibition. The absorbance variation of a colorimetric sensor is relevant to the amount of heavy metals, which enabled us to easily discriminate whether Cd(II) or Pb(II) exceeded the maximum permissible quantity within 20 min. The limit of detection (LOD) of the constructed colorimetric sensor was determined to be 1.89 μg·L–1 for Cd(II) and 2.11 μg·L–1 for Pb(II). The colorimetric sensor showed distinguished selectivity for other competitive metal ions and was validated for detecting heavy metals in several types of actual water samples.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) serves as the core cathodic reaction for fuel cells. However, the sluggish ORR kinetics and high cost of Pt-based catalysts severely restrict the commercialization of fuel cell devices. Herein, a facile in-situ synthetic strategy is developed to fabricate carbon dot-supported cobalt (CD@Co) electrocatalysts, in which carbon dots (CDs) act as both reducing agent and structural modulator. With the aim of optimizing catalytic activity and stability, the effects of CDs dosage on Co dispersion, nitrogen configuration and ORR performance are systematically investigated. The optimized CD@Co-0.12 exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.89 V (vs. RHE) and a limiting current density of 4.47 mA·cm − 2 , outperforming commercial 20% Pt/C (E 1/2 = 0.85 V). Kinetic analysis reveals a Tafel slope of 90.65 mV·dec − 1 and a near-four-electron transfer pathway ( n ≈ 3.78). After 5000 CV cycles, only negligible potential decay is observed, demonstrating excellent stability. This work provides a low-cost and scalable strategy for designing high-performance non-precious metal ORR catalysts. Cadmium (Cd) soil contamination poses a particularly acute threat to public health. While synthetic zeolites have shown promise in immobilizing Cd, their widespread application is hindered by high material costs, energy-intensive synthesis, and reliance on high-pressure reactors. To date, no study has reported the successful transformation of natural kaolinite-rich soil into sodalite zeolite under normal pressure conditions. This study bridges that critical gap by developing a novel, low-cost, and energy-efficient route to synthesize sodalite from kaolinite-rich soil using only a household electric cooker at ambient pressure. Superior to the conventional high-pressure hydrothermal route, it offers significant advantages in terms of material costs, equipment expenses, synthesis efficiency, and energy consumption. Remarkably, this soil-derived sodalite demonstrates exceptional Cd-contaminated soil remediation efficacy. With only 0.3 % sodalite additions (w/w), the proportion of exchangeable Cd species in the soil decreases from 43.2 % to 22.6 %, converting into Fe-Mn oxide-bound and residual forms, effectively diminishing Cd's mobility. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Cd 2+ is primarily locked into the framework of sodalite through ion exchange reactions and partially captured on the surface via chemisorption effects. In the state of Cd adsorption saturation, the contribution ratios of ion exchange and chemisorption by sodalite are approximately 78.7% and 21.3%, respectively. Overall, this study develops an innovative normal-pressure sodalite synthesis route using natural soil and further reveals the huge potential of soil resources for zeolite synthesis and contaminated soil remediation.

Here, we combined Cd and In codoping with a simple hydrothermal synthesis method to prepare SnSe powders composed of nanorod-like flowers. After spark plasma sintering, its internal grains inherited well the morphological features of the precursor, and the multiscale microstructure included nanorod-shaped grains, high-density dislocations, and stacking faults, as well as abundant nanoprecipitates, resulting in an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.15 W m–1 K–1 for the synthesized material. At the same time, Cd and In synergistically regulated the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of SnSe, leading to an enhanced power factor. Among them, Sn0.94Cd0.03In0.03Se achieved a peak ZT of 1.50 parallel to the pressing direction, representing an 87.5% improvement compared with pure SnSe. Notably, the material possesses isotropic ZT values parallel and perpendicular to the pressing direction, overcoming the characteristic anisotropy in thermal performance observed in previous polycrystalline SnSe-based materials. Our results provide a new strategy for optimizing the performance of thermoelectric materials through structural engineering.

Long-root Eichhornia crassipes (L.R.E. crassipes), as a new kind of macrophyte, was used in Dianchi Lake in recent years, but its comparison in eliminating metals with traditional Eichhornia crassipes was never conducted. In this article, a comparative study on the removal of toxic metals from aqueous solutions by L.R.E. crassipes and E. crassipes was first studied. In total, the removal percentage of toxic metals followed the order of Pb>Cd>Cu>Zn, and L.R.E. crassipes was better than that with E. crassipes. Meanwhile, L.R.E. crassipes had a higher relative growth rate than E. crassipes, and solutions had a better physicochemical property after dealing with L.R.E. crassipes. Results also showed that maximum removal capacity for Zn, Cu, and Cd with L.R.E. crassipes was reached at pH 5. An orthogonal of L16 (44) in the multimetal system was designed to study the effects of cometals on removal of a single metal. Metal removal from the solution involves two stages: adsorption and absorption. Removal mainly occurred in the roots, and the main removal process was adsorption. Adsorption percentages of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd were 75%, 43%, 29%, and 61% in the root surface, respectively. Bioconcentration factors of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd were 267, 102, 230, and 173 with L.R.E. crassipes, respectively. Based on these results, L.R.E. crassipes could be used as a biodegradable absorbent to purify polluted water bodies fast and effectively.

Nanoplastics (NPs) have extensively accumulated in aquatic environments and coexist with various contaminants including heavy metals. While the adverse effects of NPs and Cd on aquatic organisms have been widely reported, most studies focus on co-exposure scenarios, leaving the effect of different exposure sequences poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the combined toxicity of NPs and Cd to Daphnia magna under different exposure scenarios (single exposure, pre-exposure, and co-exposure). The bioaccumulation of NPs and Cd, intestinal histology, and gut microbiota were further analyzed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of combined toxicity. Our findings reveal that environmentally relevant concentrations of NPs stimulated D. magna reproduction, increasing total number of offspring (hormesis). Pre-exposure to NPs enhanced tolerance to subsequent stressors, thus reducing the combined toxicity of NPs and Cd. In contrast, slow toxicological recovery of Cd caused persistent residual effects that amplified the toxicity of subsequent combined exposure to NPs and Cd. Specifically, compared to single-exposure groups, Cd pre-exposure led to a 5-fold and 3-fold increase in the bioaccumulation of NPs and Cd, respectively, accompanied by exacerbated intestinal damage and disruption of the gut microbiota. Our results highlighted the importance of evaluating combined toxicity under different exposure scenarios in natural environments, providing new insight into the potential risks of NPs in aquatic environments.

Aims To address the limitations of Phytoextraction and Phytostabilization, this study introduced a novel "root accumulation" strategy by synergizing the advantages of phytoextraction and immobilization techniques for Cd-contaminated soil remediation. Methods A pot experiment was conducted to screen nine plant species using microbial inoculation, and Lolium multiflorum was selected. Foliar application of control agents was applied, and NO was identified as the most effective. An integrated remediation system was established, and soil microbial communities were preliminarily analyzed. Results Lolium multiflorum exhibited the highest root biomass (3.96 g pot –1 ) and root Cd content (82.60 mg kg –1 ), significantly exceeding other species ( P < 0.05), along with a high Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) (2.75) and low Transfer Factor (TF). Under 5 mg kg –1 Cd, TF increased by up to 41.25%. Foliar application of NO, Se, and Si effectively suppressed Cd translocation to shoots, with NO showing the strongest inhibition and simultaneously enhancing uptake of Ca, Mg, Cu, and Zn. The combination of foliar NO (30 mg L –1 ) and microbial consortium achieved the highest root BCQ (0.294) under 10 mg L –1 Cd, while improving plant tolerance and soil microbial diversity. Conclusions This study successfully developed an efficient root accumulation system within a single plant framework, enabling simultaneous reduction of shoot Cd levels and enhancement of root Cd sequestration. These findings offer critical insights and technical advancements for sustainable precision agriculture and environmentally sound soil remediation strategies. Graphical

Noncentrosymmetric salt-inclusion chalcogenides (SICs) are a burgeoning class of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials distinguished by their exceptional optical properties. These materials often exhibit robust second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses and possess wide band gaps that typically correspond to their impressive laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). In this study, we present two isostructural salt-inclusion chalcogenides, namely [K4Cl][Zn11In9S26] (1) and [K4Cl][Cd11In9S26] (2), which consist of highly parallel-oriented host [MII11In9S26]3− frameworks, with guest [K4Cl]3+ ions incorporated to enhance structural stability and maintain charge balance. Notably, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit favorable NLO properties, including strong nonphase matching SHG intensities (1.9 and 5.7 × AgGaS2 for particle sizes of 30–50 μm) under 1910 nm laser irradiation. Furthermore, compounds 1 and 2 demonstrate suitable band gaps (2.48 and 2.61 eV) and exhibit minimal anisotropy in their thermal expansion coefficients (ranging from 0.09 to 1.01), contributing to their significant LIDT (7.0 and 4.6 × AgGaS2@1064 nm), respectively.

To improve the thermoelectric properties of a material, the carrier concentration needs to be optimized first. But the increase of carrier concentration usually results in degraded carrier mobility , which restricts the enhancement in thermoelectric performance. Herein, we report the Cd doped Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 which overcomes such a trade-off between carrier concentration and mobility. The doping of Cd results in significantly increased hole concentration, which successfully suppresses the bipolar diffusion. Meanwhile, magnetic measurements indicate that the Hall mobility increases with the doping of Cd owing to the decrease of anti-site defects. Thus, simultaneous increase of carrier concentration and mobility is realized in p-type Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 through Cd doping, resulting in significantly enhanced power factor. In addition, the lattice disorder induced by the substitution of Cd for Sb/Bi leads to an obvious reduction in lattice thermal conductivity . As a result, a zT value of 1.2 at 120 °C is achieved for the 2 at% Cd doped sample. The peak zT of the 4 at% Cd doped sample is shifted to 185 °C due to the effectively suppressed bipolar effect and an average zT value of ∼1.0 is obtained in the temperature range of 50–300 °C. Our achievement demonstrates that there is still a significant room to improve the thermoelectric properties of the intensively investigated BiSbTe system by simply doping a properly selected element.

Cadmium pollution in the soil induces significant hazards to agricultural growth and public health. Therefore, new routes are needed to develop low-cost soil amendments that can effectively stabilize cadmium and improve soil fertility. This study introduces modified illite (MIT) with the enhanced ability to stabilize heavy metal Cd through the mixing of illite with calcium carbonate, silicate and sulfate in specific proportions by using the well-known calcination-hydrothermal process. The characterization findings revealed that the modified MIT is predominantly composed of gehlenite and akermanite, with greatly improved specific surface area, pore structure and cation exchange capacity. The main purpose of the present study is to unravel a plausible mechanism on how MIT can stabilize Cd(II) in the soil and to investigate the effect of MIT on the fertility of the contaminated soil. Experiments on soil remediation revealed that MIT has a more profound stabilizing impact on Cd(II) compared to natural illite, resulting in a 22.84% reduction in acid-soluble Cd of the soil when MIT was dosed at 0.5%. The potential mechanism of Cd(II) immobilization by MIT involves the ionic exchange of Cd2+with the exchangeable Ca2+and Mg2+. In addition, the hydrolysis products of gehlenite and akermanite are prone to form silicate precipitates with free Cd, leading to soil pH increment. The pot experiments showed that MIT significantly reduces the cadmium content of soil and improves the growth of water spinach organs. Meanwhile, enhancement of the indicators in rhizosphere soil further proved that MIT effectively increases the nutrient content, improves the soil structure and promotes microorganism growth. Keywords:modified illite;clay mineral;heavy metal;immobilization;soil fertility

Cadmium has been classified as a kind of human carcinogens, and has a strong mobility in the water environment and this can result in serious harm to human health and environmental safety. Here, a new selective and efficient extraction-recovery strategy for Cd purification is provided by using C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 as the green extractant. Due to the high compatibility between C 6 MimT and [C 6 Mim]PF 6 , C 6 MimT-Cd was efficiently separated from the aqueous phase. When the concentration of Cd(II) was 1000 mg/L, the extraction rate could reached 99.9 %. By comparing [C 6 MIm]BF 4 with [C 6 MIm]PF 6 , the hydrophobicity restrained the ion exchange between cation and Cd and significantly reduced the loss of extractant. The extracted Cd(II) was separated in the form of precipitation after stripping. The extraction system of C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 was stable after several extraction-stripping cycles. The extraction of Cd(II) by C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 system mainly realized by forming a neutral and extractable cadmium complexes between Cd(II) and thione. Based on the natural complexation mechanism between metal and C 6 MImT, Cd exists as obvious competitive advantage in coordination with C 6 MimT compare to Pb, Zn, Mg, Cr, Fe. This work overcomes the problems of extractant loss and organic pollution caused by volatile or ion exchange, which can only reduce environmental hazards, but also promote the recovery of cadmium and other valuable resources.
