Photosynthetic microbial CO 2 fixation represents an efficient strategy for industrial flue gas mitigation. However, system performance is critically dependent on the gas bubble size within the bioreactor. While large bubbles limit gas-liquid mass transfer, leaving substantial carbon unabsorbed and unconverted, excessively small bubbles can potentially impair microbial viability and activity. In this case, this study systematically investigates the trade-off in flue gas bubble size for carbon fixation by Chlorella pyrenoidosa , specifically elucidating the mechanisms by which fine bubbles impact cellular functions. The use of flue gas bubble with mean diameters of 259, 485, and 653 μm resulted in carbon fixation rates of 0.8651, 1.0175, and 0.7956 g/L/h, respectively. Notably, the peak performance at 485 μm was also associated with the highest levels of protein (59.36 %) and chlorophyll (3.483 %). Mechanistic analysis indicated that 485 μm bubbles provided an optimal balance, enhancing mass transfer compared to larger bubbles while avoiding the severe cell membrane damage and lipid peroxidation induced by exposure to 259 μm bubbles. At this optimal size, carbon metabolism was accelerated through the upregulation of key enzymes (e.g., carbonic anhydrase and RuBisCO) and enhanced energy supply (e.g., NADPH and ATP), whereas 259 μm bubbles caused metabolic suppression. These findings establish bubble size as a decisive factor governing carbon fixation efficiency in photosynthetic biohybrid systems, providing a mechanistic basis for enhancing their efficacy in flue gas mitigation.

Tetracycline (TC)–copper (Cu) co-contamination can impair soil functioning and intensify selection for antibiotic resistance. In a 49-day microcosm experiment, we evaluated the effects ofChlorella pyrenoidosasupplementation on soils treated with TC (0, 30, or 100 mg·kg−1) and Cu (0, 100, or 500 mg·kg−1). TC removal, extractable Cu, soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs), and microbial community composition were assessed. In unamended contaminated microcosms, TC dissipation ranged from 22.7% to 43.5%, whereasC. pyrenoidosaamendment increased TC dissipation to 49.9–73.5%. The addition also reduced extractable Cu by 35.6–50.6%, partially restored dehydrogenase and catalase activities, and altered bacterial community structure. Metagenomic analysis showed thattetXwas the predominant TRG detected and that algal supplementation was associated with lower total TRG signals and reduced relative abundances of several pollution-associated taxa, includingRhodanobacter. Correlation analyses revealed associations among TRGs, microbial taxa, and treatment conditions but did not establish direct host–gene relationships or horizontal gene transfer. Overall,C. pyrenoidosaapplication enhanced TC removal and Cu immobilization and was associated with reduced enrichment of the tetracycline resistome.

Graphical The toxicity of carbon dots synthesized using cholinium bitartrate against Chlorella vulgaris was assessed. The carbon dots with low concentration present low toxicity to microalga. The oxidative stress and cell damage were the main toxic mechanisms of carbon dots to green alga. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are considered as eco-friendly nanomaterials and suitable alternatives for traditional metal quantum dots. However, their high hydrophilicity and nanoscale size of CQDs pose a significant risk to aquatic organisms considering their widespread application. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was selected as a model organism to assess the ecotoxicity of CQDs synthesized using choline bitartrate via a pyrolysis method. The effects of the CQDs on algal growth, antioxidant activity, photosynthetic pigment, and malondialdehyde levels have been extensively studied. Algal growth was inhibited by CQDs with a median effective concentration (EC 50 ) > 271 mg/L. After 4 days of exposure, chlorophyll content, respiratory rate, and protein content of the green alga declined by 14.0–91.75%, 73.4% and 24.4%, respectively. The CQDs caused excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Chlorella vulgaris and induced oxidative stress and physical damage to the algal cells. Our findings contribute to the potential application and risks assessment of the CQDs.

Artemisinin , a novel plant allelochemical , has attracted attention for its potential selective inhibitory effects on algae, yet to be fully explored. This study compares the sensitivity and action targets of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) to artemisinin algaecide (AMA), highlighting their differences. Results indicate that at high concentrations, AMA displaces the natural PQ at the Q B binding site within M. aeruginosa photosynthetic system , impairing the D1 protein repair function. Furthermore, AMA disrupts electron transfer from reduced ferredoxin (Fd) to NADP + by interfering with the iron-sulfur clusters in the ferredoxin-NADP + reductases (FNR) domain of Fd. Moreover, significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation triggers oxidative stress and interrupts the tricarboxylic acid cycle , hindering energy acquisition. Notably, AMA suppresses arginine synthesis in M. aeruginosa , leading to reduced microcystins (MCs) release. Conversely, C. pyrenoidosa counters ROS accumulation via photosynthesis protection, antioxidant defenses, and by regulating intracellular osmotic pressure , accelerating damaged protein degradation , and effectively repairing DNA for cellular detoxification . Additionally, AMA stimulates the expression of DNA replication-related genes, facilitating cell proliferation . Our finding offer a unique approach for selectively eradicating cyanobacteria while preserving beneficial algae, and shed new light on employing eco-friendly algicides with high specificity.

In this study, natural clay-like silicate minerals were used as precursors to prepare highly acid-catalytic hydrophobic catalysts. A series of sulfonic acid-functionalized attapulgite catalysts, SO3H-APG, were fabricated by the ball-milling–oxidation method. The catalytic performance in the co-liquefaction and co-pyrolysis ofChlorellaand oil shale was investigated. The catalysts were analyzed using hydrophobicity evaluation, TEM, BET, FTIR, and other characterization methods. The SO3H-APG catalysts exhibited good hydrophobicity and dispensability. Sulfonation grafting improved their excellent hydrocarbon conversion activity. According to the GC–MS results, the addition of the SO3H-APG catalysts shifted the co-liquefaction products of microalgae and oil shale towards lower carbon numbers, with the majority of the products concentrated between C5 and C12, and a content of 84.9% in the range of C5–C11, while the content of products in the range of C12–C20 was only 15.1%. In the co-pyrolysis experiments, the addition of the catalysts promoted the thermal decomposition reaction. The synergistic effect between oil shale and microalgae facilitated the production of more hydrocarbon compounds with a higher H/C atomic ratio. The development of this type of catalyst provides an economically favorable approach for the co-conversion of algae and oil shale. The oil shale pyrolysis kinetic diagram shows that adding the APG clay-based catalyst significantly reduces the time for achieving the same conversion rate, especially below 300 °C, where the in situ catalytic effect is most pronounced.

Once the skin was damaged, it lost the ability to prevent harmful bacteria from infiltrating into the tissues, leading to wound infection and even serious tissue damage. Although conventional therapies were effective in eradicating pathogenic bacteria, they could not promote the healing of damaged skin, which was easily affected by tissue adhesion and lacked the ability to maintain a moist wound environment. In this study, according to the principle of green chemistry, Chlorella extracellular polysaccharide–selenium nanoparticles (EPS-SeNPs) with high biological activity, high stability, and low toxicity were synthesized for the first time, which could be used to kill wound pathogens and relieve inflammation. EPS-SeNPs were combined with a wound dressing hydrogel, and the hydrogel was cross-linked by a Schiff base reaction between the biocompatible oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and gelatin (Gel) to promote wound healing. At the same time, the pH fluctuation of the wound could be monitored by adding the acid–base indicator litmus to it by the solvent replacement method, thus indirectly predicting the healing process of the wound. The results of in vitro experiments showed that the composite hydrogel had strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory abilities, which could inhibit the growth and reproduction of common pathogens. The experimental results showed that the antibacterial rate of the composite hydrogel could reach 99%, the ability to clear ABTS free radicals was 93.13%, and the ability to clear DPPH free radicals was 82.36%. In the in vivo experiment, SD rats were used to construct an infected wound model, and then wound healing experiments were conducted. The experimental results showed that the composite hydrogel could significantly accelerate the wound healing process, promote new epidermis formation and hair follicle growth, and reduce inflammatory response. This work may open up a way for the clinical management of infected wounds and the simultaneous monitoring of wound healing.

Polyacrylic acid (PAA)-based hydrogels have been widely used in commercial wound dressings. However, they may trigger a series of adverse reactions within biological organisms due to PAA’s nonbiodegradable nature and the difficulty of metabolism in physiological environments. To overcome this issue, a degradable PAA derivative (PLC) containing acrylic acid, α-lipoic acid (LA), and 2-(N-3-sulfopropyl-N,N-dimethylammonium)ethyl methacrylate was synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Then, a multifunctional PLC-based hydrogel (CAPLCT@Chlorella) was developed through a facile mixture of PLC, tannic acid (TA), l-arginine-coupled chitosan (CA), and Chlorella. Chlorella in the hydrogel could constantly generate oxygen (O2) through photosynthesis, relieving hypoxia. CA in the hydrogel endows CAPLCT@Chlorella the release of nitric oxide (NO), which could promote angiogenesis. The hydrogel not only exhibits excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm activities but can also relieve oxidative stress and modulate the inflammatory microenvironment. CAPLCT@Chlorella offers a promising therapeutic option for bacteria-infected wound healing.

This study explores the effect of chlorella peptides (CP) on the physicochemical properties, in vitro digestibility, and glucose metabolism of corn starch after co-gelatinization. Our in vitro digestion results revealed that CP improved the digestibility of corn starch by increasing its resistant starch (RS) content. We found that CP interacts with starch via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, enhancing its short-range ordered structure — a novel mechanism for reducing digestibility. This effect, which is independent of the long-range ordered structure, is further supported by CP's ability to noncompetitively inhibit α-amylase and obstruct starch gelatinization. Further in vivo studies using zebrafish demonstrated that CP significantly increased the alpha and beta diversity of gut microbiota and promoted the enrichment of beneficial bacteria, which played a crucial role in improving glucose metabolism. This research provides significant insights into the mechanisms by which aquatic plant proteins can slow down starch digestion, paving the way for the development of novel slow-digestion functional foods.

Chlorella biochar modified with boron and copper (B/Cu-BC) was created and used to break down the antibiotic metronidazole (MNZ) through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The physicochemical properties of B/Cu-BC were analyzed using SEM, BET, FTIR, XRD and XPS. The results showed that the modified Chlorella biochar, which included several oxygen-containing functional groups, exhibited a rise of 7.1 times in specific surface area and a rise of 8 times in pore volume compared to the unmodified variant. Under the optimal conditions, the B/Cu-BC+PMS system removed 86.6 % of MNZ in 90 min. The reaction mechanism of the system was confirmed by Quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments. The B/Cu-BC+PMS system was accompanied by SO 4 • - , •OH, •O 2 - and 1 O 2 , in which •O 2 - was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS). The intermediates in the degradation process of MNZ were investigated using HPLC-MS, and two potential degradation pathways of MNZ were suggested. Finally, the toxicology of the intermediates from the MNZ degradation process was analyzed by toxicity estimation software tool. The bioconcentration coefficients and mutagenicity coefficients showed a significant decrease, indicating that the system could efficiently degrade the antibiotic MNZ in an environmentally friendly manner.

The degradation and metabolic pathways of sulfamethazine (SMZ) and enrofloxacin (ENR) via microalgal treatment systems were investigated in this study. SMZ and ENR applied at 1–25 mg L −1 did not significantly inhibit the growth of Chlorella vulgaris or Scenedesmus obliquus . SMZ and ENR exposure did not significantly alter the maximum quantum efficiencies of C. vulgaris and S. obliquus . When cultured at light intensities of 45–50 μmol photon m −2 s −1 , the C. vulgaris and S. obliquus treatment systems achieved 24% and 11% degradation, respectively. The greatest removal of ENR was 52% and 43.3%, for C. vulgaris and S. obliquus treatment systems , respectively, after 15 days. The results indicated that the degradation of SMZ and ENR occurred by a combination of biodegradation and photolysis. Kinetic investigations revealed that the removal of SMZ and ENR (5 mg L −1 ) followed a first-order model, with apparent rate constants ( k ) ranging from 0.0141 to 0.0048 day −1 and 0.0132 to 0.0086 day −1 , respectively. Fifteen metabolites of SMZ and five intermediates of ENR were identified by UPLC-MS, and degradation pathways for SMZ and ENR were proposed. SMZ transformation reactions included ring cleavage, hydroxylation, methylation, and oxidation, whereas ENR was degraded by dealkylation, decarboxylation, and defluorination.

Nanoparticles have been reported to induce toxicity to aquatic organisms, however, their potential impacts on phosphorus removal from wastewater by algae are unclear. In this study, the effects of nanoparticle ZnO (nano-ZnO) on phosphate (PO 4 3− ) removal by a green alga Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. We found that PO 4 3− removal efficiency was accelerated with high concentrations of nano-ZnO (0.04–0.15 mM) but reduced with low concentrations of nano-ZnO (0.005–0.04 mM) compared to the control (without nano-ZnO), suggesting that PO 4 3− removal efficiency by C. vulgaris was related to nano-ZnO concentrations. Moreover, we observed changes of nano-ZnO morphology and detected element P on the surface of nano-ZnO by using transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), indicating that PO 4 3− was interacted with nano-ZnO or the dissolved Zn 2+ from nano-ZnO. Furthermore, we confirmed this interaction induced the formation of Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 crystallites sedimentation by employing X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which finally accelerates the removal of PO 4 3− .

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play significant roles in protecting cells against environmental stresses. However, little information is known about the roles of different EPS in these processes. In this study, the productions and physicochemical characterizations of soluble-EPS (S-EPS) and bound-EPS (B-EPS), the two different fractions of EPS from a green alga Chlorella vulgaris under the stress of ZnO nanoparticle (nano-ZnO) were investigated. The contents of S-EPS and B-EPS which described as dissolved organic carbon , polysaccharides and proteins, both increased with the addition of tested nano-ZnO (0.01 and 0.04 mM) in a 72 h cultivation. EPS-Free (EPS-F) cells produced more S-EPS and B-EPS than the EPS-Cover (EPS-C) cells did with the tested nano-ZnO, especially the contents of protein in the S-EPS of EPS-F cells increased by 45.5% with 0.04 mM nano-ZnO compared to the control at 72 h. Tryptophan-like substances of the protein in S-EPS exhibited a stronger chemical static quenching than tyrosine-like substances with nano-ZnO. In addition, the hydroxyl ( OH) as well as carboxyl (C O) group, and C O of amide I, N H/C N of amide II groups in proteins were confirmed that involved in the reaction of S-EPS and B-EPS with nano-ZnO, meanwhile hemiacetal groups in saccharides were oxidized to carboxyl groups. This study could provide a better understanding of EPS in protecting against cells damage with nanoparticles.
