Developing inexpensive and efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline mediums is of great significance to the hydrogen energy industry. Hereby, we prepared a mixture of precursors with homogeneous composition by using the chelating ability of soybean protein isolate (C and N source) and phytic acid (dopant and phosphating agent) with cobalt ions , and achieved one-step synthesis and construction of Co 2 P/N–P co-doped porous carbon composite by carbonization at 800 °C. The as-synthesized Co 2 P/NPPC-800 electrocatalyst exhibits low HER overpotentials of 121 and 125 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH, which are close to those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, the NPPC substrate surrounding the Co 2 P could diminish the corrosion during the HER, and Co 2 P/NPPC-800 displays good stability and durability. Furthermore, this work offers a convenient synthesis strategy for phosphide/doped porous carbon composites in other electrochemical energy technologies.

Photo-assisted uranium reduction from uranium mine wastewater is expected to overcome the competition between impurity ions and U(VI) in the traditional process. Here, B-TiO 2 @Co 2 P-X S-scheme heterojunction with metal-oxygen-hydrogen (M-O-H) is developed insitu modification for photo-assisted U(VI) (hexavalent uranium) reduction. Relying on the DFT calculation and Hard-Soft-Acid-Base (HSAB) theory, the introduction of metal-oxygen-hydrogen (M-O-H, hard base) metallic bonds in the B-TiO 2 @Co 2 P-X is found to enhance the hydrophilicity and the capture capability for uranyl ion (hard acid). Accordingly, B-TiO 2 @Co 2 P-500 hybrid nanosheets exhibit excellent U(VI) reduction ability (>98%) in the presence of competing ions. By self-consistent energy band calculations and in-situ KPFM spectral analysis, the formation of the internal electric field between B-TiO 2 and Co 2 P at the heterojunction is proven, offering a strong driving force and atomic transportation highway for accelerating the S-scheme charge carriers directed migration and promoting the photocatalytic reduction of uranium. This work provides a valuable route to explore the functionally modified photocatalyst with high-efficiency photoelectron separation for U(VI) reduction.

The interfacial electron modulation of electrocatalysts is a useful technique for promoting catalyst performance for the water-related dissociation reactions. Herein, a high-efficient Fe-doped allotropic Co 2 P/CoP heterojunction nanoparticles embedded in N, P co-doped carbon matrix was constructed. The intense electrical interfacial contacts between the allotropic heterojunction optimized the reaction kinetics by boosting efficient charged active centers, regulating the intermediate adsorption/desorption. The incorporation of Fe atoms further enhancing the heterointerface contact between CoP and Co 2 P by providing favorable electronic properties and special coordination environment, causing the interfacial coupling enhancement. Therefore, Fe-Co 2 P/CoP possesses outstanding performance in both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, with small overpotentials of 174 mV and 286 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline medium, respectively. And only 1.71 V battery voltage is needed for the Fe-Co 2 P/CoP (+, −) cell device with satisfactory durability. This finding provides valuable insights into the engineering of electronic structures of well-designed metal phosphides for water electrolysis.

It is still a challenge to design an efficient and low-cost electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Herein, ultra-low amount Pt-doped Co2P/Ni2P on nickel foam (Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF) was facilely synthesized via an in situ controlled growth and used as an efficient electrocatalyst for electrolytic water splitting into hydrogen. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF was achieved by a two-step procedure that was conducted by the hydrothermal approach to obtain the precursor, followed by a subsequent in situ phosphorization procedure. Due to the NF substrate being supermacroporous, more active sites of Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF could be exposed, improving electron transport and providing open-channels for the rapid release of H2. Pt/Co2P/Ni2P/NF exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards HER with an overpotential of 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in an alkaline electrolyte and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV dec−1. This work provided a facile and reliable synthetic approach to improve transition metal phosphides (TMPs) for electrocatalytic HER performance in alkaline electrolytes.

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted extensive attention in energy-related fields, especially for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is imperative to develop a facile and time-consuming approach to prepare metal phosphides with satisfactory catalytic performance. Herein, nitrogen-doped CoP-Co2P decorated with Ru (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) is synthesized (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) through a hydrothermal route and following an ultrafast and simple microwave avenue within 20 s. The achieved Ru/N-CoP-Co2P possesses an interconnected porous morphology to expose abundant active sites and accelerate the mass transport. Moreover, N doping and Ru-supported decorated Ru/N-CoP-Co2P also play a key role in promoting the electrocatalytic activity. Therefore, the as-designed Ru/N-CoP-Co2P presents good catalytic performance for the HER in a wide pH range. Ru/N-CoP-Co2P merely needs overpotentials of 63, 100, and 65 mV to obtain 10 mA cm–2 in acidic, alkaline, and seawater electrolytes. This research provides a novel and efficient strategy for the synthesis of TMPs with highly efficient catalytic activity.

The development of active, robust, and nonprecious electrocatalysts for both the oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER and HER) is highly crucial and challenging. Herein, ultrafine Co2P nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped porous carbon nanosheet/carbon nanotube hybrids are prepared via a straightforward pyrolysis method. Impressively, the hybrids exhibit remarkable catalytic performance for both the OER and HER in 1.0 M KOH solution, with a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low over-potentials of 280 mV for the OER and 154 mV for the HER, respectively. More importantly, when fabricated as an alkaline electrolyzer, the hybrids afford 10 mA cm−2 at a cell voltage of 1.64 V with strong stability, rivalling the integrated performance of a commercial IrO2 and Pt catalyst couple. The achieved ultrahigh catalytic performance can be attributed to the nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped carbon nanosheets, carbon-encapsulated ultrafine Co2P NPs, high conductivity of incorporated carbon nanotubes, large surface area (199.94 m2 g−1), interpenetrated macro-/mesoporous structure, and the strong synergistic effect among these factors.

Developing efficient active transition metal phosphide (TMP) bifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for alleviating the future energy crisis is crucial and challenging. Herein, we developed a facile self-assembly strategy for the one-step fabrication of core–shell Co2P nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen and phosphorus codoped porous carbon (Co2P@NPPC) via in situ carbonization and phosphorization. Due to the collaborative effect between NPPC and Co2P, the obtained Co2P@NPPC hybrid revealed robust electrocatalytic performance toward the HER and OER. Impressively, it exhibited a lower overpotential of 147 mV for HER and 316 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2. Remarkably, it only required a low cell voltage of 1.65 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, with long-time reliable stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the introduction of phosphorus into cobalt can weaken the H-adsorption free energy and increase the electronic states of Co2P.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with high electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are reckoned as a substitution of precious group metals catalysts in rechargeable Zn-air battery. In this work, Co/Co 2 P heterojunction nanoparticles supported N,P-doped carbon nanosheets (Co/Co 2 P@NPCNS) were designed and prepared via a facile one-step molten salt-assisted pyrolysis process. Density function theory calculations reveal that the heterogeneous interactions of Co/Co 2 P effectively enhance the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and OER. The synergistic interaction between the Co/Co 2 P heterojunction nanoparticles with highly exposed active sites and excellent catalytic activity and the two-dimensional doped carbon nanosheets with high conductivity contributes to Co/Co 2 P@NPCNS exhibiting preeminent bifunctional ORR/OER activity and stability with a high half-wave potential for ORR (0.87 V), a low overpotential for OER (302 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and a low potential gap (0.66 V). The homemade rechargeable Zn-air battery performs high peak power density (187 mW cm −2 ) and exceptional endurance. This heterogeneous interface tactic of integrating TMPs with heteroatom-doped carbon materials may shed light on the research and development of non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

A major significance persists in the construction of cost-effective electrocatalysts possessing both outstanding activity and robust durability for water and urea electrolysis, which is essential for realizing energy-saving hydrogen evolution. However, it is still challenging to explore bifunctional electrocatalysts under ampere-level current density. Herein, we report the construction of a three-phase heterojunction electrocatalyst with bifunctional activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR), achieved through the deliberate tuning of morphological features and electronic configurations. Through local bonding environment engineering at the heterointerface, the unique heterostructure effectively accelerates electron transfer and interfacial interactions, leading to significantly improved reaction kinetics and intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the multi-heterostructure promotes electron migration and interfacial coupling via the concerted regulation of the electronic configuration, d-band center position, and density of states (DOS). These modifications collectively lower the chemisorption free energies of reaction intermediates, thereby accelerating the dissociation of both water and urea molecules. As a result, the heterojunction electrocatalyst exhibits ultralow potentials of −0.198 and 1.41 V to reach 1000 mA cm −2 for HER and UOR, respectively. Notably, when employed as a urea-assisted electrolyzer, the system achieves a cell voltage of 1.58 V at 500 mA cm −2 , which is 200 mV less than that required for conventional water electrolysis. Furthermore, the UOR-HER electrolyzer exhibits robust operational stability, sustaining 500 mA cm −2 for 100 h without significant degradation. Collectively, this study establishes a novel and practically viable route toward low-energy-consumption hydrogen production. Developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts requires adequate exposure of catalyst active sites and improved interfacial bonding between the catalyst and collector. Here in, we fabricated a self-supporting catalyst electrode (Co 2 P/NPC/CC) by high-temperature carbonization of carbon cloth (CC) coated with a precursor mixture and subsequent phosphating. Co 2 P nanoparticles were uniformly anchored to resin-derived N-doped porous carbon (NPC) on the CC fibers. The precursor mixture included phenolic resin, 1,3,5-Tris(2-hydroxyethyl) cyanuric acid (Theic) and cobalt nitrate. The NPC formed by in-situ carbonization played a domain-limiting and anchoring role for nano Co 2 P, ensuring good interfacial bonding among CC, NPC and Co 2 P. The Co 2 P/NPC/CC catalyst required overpotentials of 94.5 and 96.4 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for alkaline artificial seawater and acidic HER, respectively. An alkaline artificial seawater cell with Co 2 P/NPC/CC and RuO 2 electrodes exhibited a voltage of 1.69 V to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , comparable to a commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 electrolyzer (1.68 V). Chronopotentiometry stability tests for 60 h at varying current densities (10–100 mA cm −2 ) demonstrated the outstanding stability of Co 2 P/NPC/CC. This work offers new insights for designing low-resistance, high-stability self-supporting nanocomposite electrodes for electrocatalytic water splitting.

Co 2 P has been widely applied in a variety of applications yet still faces challenges in implementing hypotoxic and large-scale synthesis. We here report a scalable synthetic route to produce tussock-like nanostructured Co 2 P (t-Nano Co 2 P), which exhibits high-performance electrocatalytic properties toward acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Such t-Nano Co 2 P can evolve to CoOOH nanoplates that show excellent electrocatalytic activity for sulfite oxidation reaction (SOR) in alkaline solution. The findings encourage us to construct a hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzer with t-Nano Co 2 P and its CoOOH derivative as catalysts of acidic cathode for HER and alkaline anode for SOR, respectively, which performs excellently with capability of synchronous generation of H 2 and sulfate in an industrial-level rate at a relatively low applied voltage. The proof-of-concept electrolyzer, by virtue of the viability of scalable synthesis and high-production yield, holds great promise for co-production of H 2 and sulfate in an energy-effective and environmentally-friendly manner.

A kind of Co 2 P embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanoframework (Co 2 PNC-NF) synthesized from directly carbonized Co-based metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) combined with phosphorus was utilized in the microbial fuel cell (MFC) to modify the active carbon air-cathode for the first time. Various techniques involving XRD, FESEM, TEM/EDS, BET and XPS were used to characterize the microstructure, morphology and surface chemical composition belonging to as-synthesized Co 2 PNC-NF. The electrochemical measurements revealed that the active carbon cathode modified by Co 2 PNC-NF got reduced resistance and optimized catalytic behavior in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. The optimized MFC had a high maximum power density reaching 2001 mW m −2 , increasing by 123% compared with the bare active carbon cathode MFC. This result showed that combination between transition-metals phosphide and heteroatom-doped carbon matrices was beneficial to the improvement of MFC performance. Moreover, density functional theory calculations indicated that the special structure of double Co site of 001 face of Co 2 P can accelerate the ORR by boosting the cracking of OOH* group. Therefore, the Co 2 PNC-NF could be applied as an economical and efficient electrocatalyst in MFC to replace noble metal catalyst.
