Hollow N-doped carbon-encapsulated Cu2Se/CoSe2 heterostructure with functionalized separator for fast and stable rechargeable aluminum batteries

Yonghong Lu,Siping Li,Zhi Li,Zhaodi Wang,Huilong Song,Zhifang Chen,Yangyang Chen,Gangyong Li,Zhaohui Hou

A dual-protection strategy suppresses polyselenide shuttling and volume expansion for stable Al batteries. • Cu 2 Se/CoSe 2 heterointerfaces accelerate redox kinetics and optimize electronic structure for Al storage. • Hollow carbon nanotubes buffer mechanical strain and confine active species during cycling. • Achieving 274.2 mAh g −1 over 1000 cycles and high-rate performance up to 3.2 A g −1 . Transition metal selenides (TMSs) hold great promise as high-capacity cathode materials for rechargeable aluminum batteries (RABs) owing to their cost-effectiveness and favorable redox activity. However, their practical implementation is severely plagued by the structural collapse induced by volume expansion and the rapid capacity decay caused by polyselenide dissolution in acidic ionic liquid electrolytes. Herein, a dual-protection strategy is proposed by rationally constructing a hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube-encapsulated Cu 2 Se/CoSe 2 heterostructure (NC@Cu 2 Se/CoSe 2 ), coupled with an acetylene black-modified separator (AB/GF/A). In this integrated architecture, the hollow conductive carbon skeleton physically confines the active species and buffers mechanical strain, while the bimetallic selenide heterojunction accelerates reaction kinetics. Synergistically, the functionalized separator further suppresses the shuttle effect by intercepting dissolved species. Benefiting from these multidimensional merits, the assembled RABs manifest superior electrochemical performance, delivering a high reversible capacity of 274.2 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , and 250 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 3.2 A g −1 . This work offers a comprehensive perspective on integrating heterostructure engineering with separator modification to unlock the potential of advanced RABs. Se-vacancy engineered CoSe2/MoS2 heterojunction with DFT revealed dual charge transfer pathways for accelerated antibiotic photocatalytic degradation

Ning Fu,Zhao Liu,Xiangyu Li,Fan Zhu,Jie He,Guixiang Teng,Xingang Li,Chun Zhang

To address the challenge of antibiotic-contaminated water remediation, we designed a defect-engineered CoSe2@MoS2 photocatalyst by integrating selenium-deficient CoSe2 dodecahedra (derived from ZIF-67) with vertically aligned MoS2 nanosheets. The catalyst achieved 90.4% visible-light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation within 60 minutes, demonstrating a 3.1-fold performance enhancement over pristine MoS2 due to the synergistic effects of atomic-scale defect engineering and heterostructure design. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a dual enhancement mechanism: selenium vacancies introduced localized mid-gap states, increasing the photogenerated electron density by 2.8-fold, while the CoSe2/MoS2 heterojunction formed a type II band alignment, facilitating interfacial electron transfer via a built-in electric field. In situ spectroscopic analysis confirmed the vacancy-mediated enhancement of reactive oxygen species (·OH/·O2−) generation, showing a 2.8-fold increase in yield. DFT-guided quantitative analysis further demonstrated that the improved activity resulted from the synergistic interaction between heterojunction formation and vacancy modulation. The catalyst exhibited excellent environmental stability, maintaining >88% efficiency over 10 cycles with minimal metal leaching (<0.2 ppm). These findings advance the development of photocatalysts for visible-light-driven wastewater treatment, addressing the critical trade-offs between catalytic efficiency, operational stability, and ecological compatibility.

Cubic CoSe2@carbon as polysulfides adsorption-catalytic mediator for fast redox kinetics and advanced stability lithium-sulfur batteries

Chaojiang Fan,Rong Yang,Yun Yang,Yuanyuan Yang,Yong Huang,Yinglin Yan,Lisheng Zhong,Yunhua Xu

Although lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are an attractive next-generation rechargeable battery with high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg −1 ) and specific capacity (1675 mA h g −1 ), the shuttle of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is still the protruding obstacle to accelerate the redox reaction of LSBs. Here, cubic cobalt diselenide@carbon (CoSe 2 @C) derived from zeolite imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) was employed as the functional coating of polypropylene (PP) separator to efficiently adsorb and catalyze polysulfides, inhibit “shuttle effect” and improve the electrochemical reaction kinetics of LSBs. The CoSe 2 @C offers larger mesopore proportion of 77.19 % and abundant active sites to ensure space as a secondary reaction region, and infiltration of electrolyte and rapid transport of Li + . The involved adsorption and catalysis effect are discussed by static adsorption experiment, XPS, and Li 2 S nucleation kinetics analysis. The results show that CoSe 2 @C exhibits strong adsorption effect and catalytic activity on LiPSs, and CoSe 2 @C/PP cells display fast Li + diffusion and improved redox kinetics (high Li 2 S nucleation peak current of 0.27 mA and deposition capacity of 148.46 mA h g −1 ). Ascribe to these advantages, the CoSe 2 @C/PP cell provides an initial discharge specific capacity of 1335.01 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C and a fine reversible capacity at 5.0 C, and achieves stable and durable lifespan with an average capacity decay rate of 0.12 % over 400 cycles at 0.5 C. This work could promote the practical application of metal selenides in the key components and devices for LSBs.

Crystal Structure Regulation of CoSe2 Induced by Fe Dopant for Promoted Surface Reconstitution toward Energetic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Shuo Chen,Kaiqin Yue,Jiawei Shi,Zhicheng Zheng,Yuanqing He,Hao Wan,Gen Chen,Ning Zhang,Xiaohe Liu,Renzhi Ma

Most nonoxide catalysts based on transition metal elements will inevitably change their primitive phases under anodic oxidation conditions in alkaline media. Establishing a relationship between the bulk phase and surface evolution is imperative to reveal the intrinsic catalytic active sites. In this work, it is demonstrated that the introduction of Fe facilitates the phase transition of orthorhombic CoSe2 into its cubic counterpart and then accelerates the Co–Fe hydroxide layer generation on the surface during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, the Fe-doped cubic CoSe2 catalyst exhibits a significantly enhanced activity with a considerable overpotential decrease of 79.9 and 66.9 mV to deliver 10 mA·cm–2 accompanied by a Tafel slope of 48.0 mV·dec–1 toward OER when compared to orthorhombic CoSe2 and Fe-doped orthorhombic CoSe2, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduction of Fe on the surface hydroxide layers will tune electron density around Co atoms and raise the d-band center. These findings will provide deep insights into the surface reconstitution of the OER electrocatalysts based on transition metal elements.

Flower-like CoSe2/N, P-doped carbon microspheres accommodated on carbon nanosheets for high-performance potassium-ion batteries

Qinlian Liu,Xiaojie Tan,Xudong Li,Yiwen Li,Xuan Han,Shihao Cui,Dejian Xu,Yachao Liu,Rui Wang,Qingshan Zhao,Mingbo Wu

Transition metal selenides (TMSs) have emerged as promising electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), whereas the large volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics have seriously hindered the cycle life and rate performance. Herein, a hierarchical composite of flower-like CoSe 2 /N, P-doped carbon microspheres accommodated on carbon nanosheets (CoSe 2 -NPC@CNS) was rationally fabricated as the anode for PIBs through a one-pot hydrothermal and subsequent selenization method. The intimate hybridization of CoSe 2 /N, P-doped carbon microspheres can effectively alleviate the volume expansion of CoSe 2 during charge-discharge cycles, and the ultrathin carbon nanosheets derived from fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry serves as a highly conductive and buffered substrate. By robustly merging them together, the interconnected hierarchical nanoarchitecture with exposed active sites achieves promoted potassium storage capacity, electrochemical reaction kinetics, and structural stability. As a result, the PIBs with CoSe 2 -NPC@CNS anode deliver high reversible capacities of 320.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and 213.9 mAh g −1 after 850 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , excellent rate capability (188.8 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), and enhanced pseudo-capacitive contribution rate of 88.7 %. This work offers valuable insight into the rational design and development of hierarchical anode materials with high performance for PIBs and beyond.

High-Density CoSe2 Sites Embedded within 2D Porous N-Doped Carbon for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysis

Wangyi Chen,Jing Wu,Zhongyu Li,Yu Chen,Huaisheng Ao,Xudong Zheng,Yuzhe Zhang,Jian Rong,Fengxian Qiu

Designing and fabricating efficient and stable nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is a pressing and challenging task for the pursuit of sustainable new energy devices. Herein, porous P–CoSe2@NC electrocatalysts with high-density carbon-coated CoSe2 sites were successfully fabricated based on a pyridyl-porphyrinic metal–organic framework (Co-TPyP MOF) via a molten salt-assisted synthesis method. The hierarchical pore and N-doping carbon substrate of P–CoSe2@NC promotes mass transfer and electron-transfer efficiency, which is beneficial to maximize CoSe2 site utilization. Well-designed P–CoSe2@NC exhibits efficient ORR catalytic activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.863 V and excellent catalytic stability. Meanwhile, rechargeable aqueous primary/quasi-solid-state ZABs based on a P–CoSe2@NC air cathode show a high peak power density and exceptional operating stability, catering to the demands of practical applications. The qualified performance and structure stability of the electrocatalytic system may be mainly attributed to the protection of the CoSe2 nanoparticle by the coated carbon layer. Given the rational design of the structure and the component of the electrocatalyst with enhanced ORR activity, we believe that this work has provided a reliable pathway to the development of high-performance transition-metal chalcogenides for energy-storage and -conversion devices.

Metallic Octahedral CoSe2 Threaded by N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes: A Flexible Framework for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Batteries

Qiyao Yu,Bo Jiang,Jun Hu,Cheng-Yen Lao,Yunzhi Gao,Peihao Li,Zhiwei Liu,Guoquan Suo,Donglin He,Wei (Alex) Wang,Geping Yin

Due to the abundant and low-cost K resources, the exploration of suitable materials for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) is advancing as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, the large-sized and sluggish-kinetic K ions cause poor battery behavior. This work reports a metallic octahedral CoSe 2 threaded by N-doped carbon nanotubes as a flexible framework for a high-performance KIBs anode. The metallic property of CoSe 2 together with the highly conductive N-doped carbon nanotubes greatly accelerates the electron transfer and improves the rate performance. The carbon nanotube framework serves as a backbone to inhibit the agglomeration, anchor the active materials, and stabilize the integral structure. Every octahedral CoSe 2 particle arranges along the carbon nanotubes in sequence, and the zigzag void space can accommodate the volume expansion during cycling, therefore boosting the cycling stability. Density functional theory is also employed to study the K-ion intercalation/deintercalation process. This unique structure delivers a high capacity (253 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 over 100 cycles) and enhanced rate performance (173 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 over 600 cycles) as an advanced anode material for KIBs.

Nano-Coral-Like Ni3S2/CoSe2 Composite with p–n Heterojunction to Boost Urea Oxidation in Direct Urea Fuel Cells

Liu Lunrong,Li Wenjing,Teng Mingyue,Yin Chengri,Yin Zhenxing

Direct urea fuel cells (DUFCs), as an emerging power generation technology, can efficiently convert the chemical energy stored in urea into electrical energy. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) at the DUFC anode is the key reaction determining its power output. In particular, when wastewater containing urea is used as fuel, the slow kinetics of the UOR severely limit the power output. Here, a Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF p–n heterojunction with a nano-coral structure was fabricated by in situ growing n-type Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets onto p-type CoSe 2 nanoneedle arrays on nickel foam (NF). Mott–Schottky analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that the p–n heterostructure facilitates charge transfer from Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets to CoSe 2 nanoneedles. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations indicate that the p–n heterostructure modulates the electronic states, significantly optimizes the d-band center, and promotes the adsorption of urea molecules on the catalyst surface. Compared to Ni 3 S 2 and CoSe 2 , the p–n heterojunction alters the rate-determining step (RDS) of UOR from the *CO(NH 2 )NH → *CO(NH)N pathway to the *CO(NH)N → *CONN pathway, significantly lowering the Gibbs free energy of the RDS and enhancing the UOR kinetics. Therefore, the Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF composite electrode achieves a current density of 100 mA cm –2 at only 1.33 V vs RHE, and at 1.35 V vs RHE with human urine as the electrolyte. Notably, the DUFC employing the Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF composite electrode delivers a maximum power density ( P max ) of 27.52 mW cm –2 , and retains a P max of 19.68 mW cm –2 even with human urine as the fuel.

Metal-organic framework-derived heterostructured CoSe2-ZnSe nanorods coupled with carbon polyhedron supported carbon paper for oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

Shuaiqiang Liu,Yu Li,Yan Yue,Huazhao Yang,Chuanmin Ding,Junwen Wang,Donghong Duan,Qinbo Yuan,Xiaogang Hao,Shibin Liu

Development of low-cost, efficient, and stable oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is crucial for the conversion and storage of renewable energy. Therefore, an effective integrated heterostructure catalyst is needed to achieve a lower overpotential during oxygen evolution process. In this paper, cobalt-zinc bimetallic MOF precursors are used as templates to prepare bimetallic cobalt-based selenides with good oxygen evolution catalytic activity and stability on carbon fiber paper. Due to the high specific surface area and porous structure of the coupling structure of nanorods and polyhedra, and the strong electronic coupling between CoSe 2 and ZnSe on nanorods. CoSe 2 -ZnSe/CP exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity in 1 M KOH solution. It only requires an overpotential of 275 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm -2 , and the Tafel slope is 68.9 mV dec -1 . In addition, after 12 h of continuous operation of CoSe 2 -ZnSe/CP, the activity decay of the catalyst is negligible. This work provides a method for the design of heterogeneous bimetallic selenide integrated oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.

Dual Confinement of CoSe2 Nanorods with Polyphosphazene-Derived Heteroatom-Doped Carbon and Reduced Graphene Oxide for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Zhongshu Zhao,Chenqi Gao,Jinchen Fan,Penghui Shi,Qunjie Xu,Yulin Min

High-capacity and highly stable anode materials are some of the keys to the realization of the application of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Cobalt diselenide (CoSe2) has been regarded as a high-potential anode material for PIBs. However, solving the problems of sluggish kinetics and large volumetric expansion during intercalation/deintercalation of K+ ions is always very challenging in terms of cobalt diselenide-based anode materials. Herein, reduced graphene oxide-encapsulated polyphosphazene-derived S, P, and N codoped carbon (SPNC)-coated CoSe2 nanorods (CoSe2⊂SPNC⊂rGO) were designed as PIB anode materials. CoSe2⊂SPNC⊂rGO delivers an excellent reversible capacity of 287.2 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1. Benefiting from the coating of heteroatom-doped carbon and encapsulation of rGO, the CoSe2⊂SPNC⊂rGO anodes exhibit a remarkable rate capability (100–1500 mA g–1 current density) and high stability (208.8 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at 500 mA g–1). The results demonstrate that S, P, and N codoping in carbon layers provides active sites for K+ ion storage and increases the electrical conductivity. More importantly, the dual confinement of CoSe2 nanorods with carbon layers and rGO significantly reduced the volume expansion and kept the electrode structural integrity with repeating intercalation/deintercalation of K+ ions.

Heterostructured CoSe2/FeSe2 Nanoparticles with Abundant Vacancies and Strong Electronic Coupling Supported on Carbon Nanorods for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Wei Li,Yanli Niu,Xiuju Wu,Fawang Wu,Tianhao Li,Weihua Hu

Metal selenides attract great research interest as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we report heterostructured bimetallic cobalt–iron diselenide nanoparticles with abundant vacancies and strong electronic coupling supported on carbon nanorod (CoSe2/FeSe2@C) as a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst. It is synthesized with a facile templating-engaged synthetic strategy and exhibits outstanding OER catalytic performance including high activity and good durability in alkaline medium. It affords a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 291 mV with small Tafel slope of 62 mV dec–1, which significantly outperforms the benchmarking RuO2 catalyst. The outstanding OER performance is found to be arising from its integrated advantages of the modulated electronic structure, abundant active sites, high electric conductivity, and large surface area endowed by its unique heterostructure and composition. This work exemplifies a feasible route to designing heterogeneous nanomaterials and enriches the OER electrocatalytic application of transition metal selenide-based hybrid materials.

Co-Co LDH-derived CoSe2 anchored on N-doped carbon nanospheres as high-performance anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Qifeng Lin,Zeyu Yuan,Dongyi Wang,Wei Wei,Xibin Wang,Wei Han,Lili Wang

The growing problem of limited lithium resource reserves has resulted in increased attention and a corresponding surge in sodium-ion battery (SIB) research. However, SIBs have disadvantages, such as a short cycle life and low energy density. The lack of high capacity and long-cycle stability anode materials are important factors hindering the development of SIBs. In this study, hollow carbon nanospheres were nitrogen-doped, and the zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 was used as a precursor to synthesize cobalt-based layered double hydroxide using the hydrothermal method followed by synthesizing an NHCNS@CoSe 2 @C complex using calcination and carbon coating. In this design concept, the hollow-cavity structure of the carbon nanospheres provided shorter electron diffusion paths and increased stability; the introduction of nitrogen increased the number of defect sites and charge density of the porous carbon materials, which, with the transition metal selenide, enhanced the conductivity of the final product. The resulting carbon-supported anode material, NHCNS@CoSe 2 @C, had an initial stable discharge capacity of 465.6 mAh g   −   1 at a current density of 0.1 A g   −   1 and maintained a high capacity of 373.8 mAh g   −   1 after 100 cycles. Moreover, it exhibited a high rate performance of 285.6 mAh g   −   1 at a current density of 5 A g   −   1 .
