Cell wall disturbance is an important step in the downstream process of improving the efficiency of lipid extraction from microalgae. Surfactants have been proven to be efficient alternatives to organic solvents in the extraction process. In this study, an effective approach involving deep eutectic solvent (DES) (choline chloride and carboxylic acids) treatment supplemented with surfactants has been developed to disrupt the cell walls of microalgae and increase the extraction of lipids suitable for biodiesel production. A combination of polar and non-polar solvents (ethyl acetate and n-butanol) was used for the lipid extraction process. Microalgae biomass pretreated with choline chloride malonic acid supplemented with the surfactant hexadecyl trimethylammonium chloride (HTAC) showed the best results, improving lipid extraction by 12.365%. Further elucidation of the detailed mechanism behind the cell disruption of the microalga wall by DES was achieved using density functional theory (DFT) methods. The DFT calculations revealed that hydrogen bonds between the chloride ion of the DES and hydrogen bond donor (HBD) molecules are key factors dominating the destruction of the cell wall structure ofChlorella pyrenoidosa. The optimization of lipid extraction was performed through a single-factor experiment, which included the effects of different variables (time, temperature, dosage of surfactant, and ratio of n-butanol to ethyl acetate). An extraction period of 60 min at 80 °C with a surfactant concentration of 0.5% at a 1:2 ratio of n-butanol to ethyl acetate was found to produce the maximum lipid yield (16.97%). Transesterification reactions were used to obtain fatty acid methyl esters from the optimized extracted lipids. Thus, it was determined that C16:0 (20.04%), C18:2 (29.95%), and C18:3 (21.21%) were the most prevalent fatty acids. The potential for producing biodiesel fromC. pyrenoidosawas validated by the high yields of C18 fatty acid methyl esters, and the properties of biodiesel are within the European and US standards. Keywords:microalgae;cell wall;lipid extraction;deep eutectic solvent;pretreatment;density functional theory

With the deepening of the research on the conversion of cellulose biomass to furfural, there is no green and efficient method to separate sugars and 5-HMF. This study utilized a thermoreversible aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) coupled with tetrabutylammonium bromide ([N 4444 ]Br)- based deep eutectic solvents (DES) and inorganic salts for separating glucose and 5-HMF. The thermal characteristics of DESs were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermoreversible phase behavior of ATPS was determined by phase diagram. Furthermore, the process factors were optimized, such as the type and concentration of DES and phosphate, the temperature, and the time of ATPS were investigated, to maximize the separation of glucose and 5-HMF. Finally, the ATPS was a successful integrated catalytic reaction of glucose involving CrCl 3 and 5-HMF separation. The results showed that the ATPS consist of 30 wt% [N 4444 ]Br-EG and 25 wt% K 2 HPO 4 had the most efficient extraction rate, 5-HMF reached 96.0 ± 0.6%, and mainly existed in the DES phase, while glucose was enriched in salt phase, and the extraction rate reached 99.9 ± 0.03%. And the 5-HMF yield reached 25.6 ± 1.1% in the production separation integrated platform. This thermoreversible ATPS may provide a guide for the effective extraction of furfural from biomass-derived glucose.

Currently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as an exclusive class of ionic liquid analogs, are extensively employed in various fields. Herein, vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalysts assisted by copper-based deep eutectic solvent (Cu-DES) as an electronic promoter and structure directing agent were ingeniously synthesized and exploited in the selective oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA). The DES is efficient, cost effective and highly green compared to conventionally use metal inorganic modifiers. Cu-DES was prepared from a eutectic mixture of an organic salt (ChCl) and a metal salt hydrate/metal salt of cupric (Cu(NO 3 ) 2 .3H 2 O, CuCl 2 ) and cuprous (CuCl) salt with a molar ratio of 1:1–1:3, which notably improved the catalytic performance compared to that of an unpromoted VPO catalyst. The MA selectivity and n-butane conversion of Cu–DES–VPO increased significantly, while the CO x (CO and CO 2 ) selectivity decreased. FTIR, DSC , XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, Raman, TGA, XPS, and NH 3 -TPD characterization techniques were utilized to fully analyze the DES, precursor and catalyst to explore MA selectivity. This work shifts the significant increase of 13% n-butane conversion, 11% MA selectivity and 16% MA mass yield, which greatly influences low carbon alkane utilization. Importantly, the CO: CO 2 ratio is reduced from 2.02 to 1.62, which is more beneficial for chemical plants as well as green environments.

The production of biodiesel catalyzed by lipase has the advantages of simple process, low energy consumption, and low wastewater treatment requirements. However, low activity, poor stability, and difficulty in recycling still limit the application of lipase in production of biodiesel. Herein, a novel lipase hybrid biocatalyst with superior catalytic activity and stability (lipase from Aspergillus oryzae CJLU-3, AOCL@CaP in DES) was developed by dual activation of Ca 2+ and interfacial effect of deep-eutectic solvents (DES)/water two-phase system. AOCL@CaP in DES exhibited significantly enhanced enzymatic activity with a K cat /K m value of 692 s −1 mM −1 and excellent thermostability, tolerance to chemical denaturants, substrate selectivity, and reusability compared with free lipase. Recovery activity of the prepared hybrid biocatalyst in pure water system (AOCL@CaP) and AOCL@CaP in DES was 195% and 250% using p-NPL as substrate, respectively. AOCL@CaP in DES exhibited about 253% of the original activity after 100 days of storage, while free AOCL, AOCL@CaP almost completely lost activity. The FAME content in product biodiesel catalyzed from soybean oil by AOCL@CaP was only 60%, However, the FAME content catalyzed by AOCL@CaP in DES reached 87%, and could be maintained at 50% even after 10 cycles.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) present a promising pathway for sustainable lignocellulosic biomass fractionation, yet challenges such as solvent recyclability and maintaining product quality over repeated cycles persist, which is largely caused by hemicelluloses. A lactic acid/choline chloride (LA/ChCl) DES was employed to fractionate acid-hydrolyzed poplar chip biomass. After removing ∼96% of hemicellulose via acid hydrolysis pretreatment, the fractionation using fresh DES achieved a delignification degree of 90%, yielding cellulose-rich pulp over 90%. The DES was recycled up to five times, maintaining over 90% recovery in each cycle. However, the delignification degree decreased to 76% after five cycles. Supplementing fresh DES restored the delignification degree to 78%, while activated carbon adsorption further improved it to 88%. Importantly, structural analysis confirmed minimal degradation of DES, and the recycling process maintained the quality of the fractionated products. The lignin fraction exhibited high purity (>85%), stable molecular weight (∼7000 g/mol), low polydispersity index (∼1.70), and the cellulose fraction displayed efficient fiber separation while maintaining its natural crystalline structure (crystallinity index ∼80%). This work provides new process concepts for DES fractionation of biomass, offering a scalable and environmentally sustainable solution for lignocellulosic biomass processing within biorefinery frameworks.

The valorisation of agricultural byproducts into functional biomaterials presents a crucial pathway towards a circular economy and precision agriculture. Herein, we report a closed-loop strategy to synthesise high value-added seed tape by integrating nanolignin from Camellia oleifera shells with chitosan matrices. Lignin is extracted from Camellia oleifera shells using a choline chloride–lactic acid deep eutectic solvent. Subsequently, size-controlled lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are synthesised via an antisolvent method. These LNPs are incorporated into a chitosan (CS) matrix to prepare a film for agricultural seed tape. The lignin extraction demonstrated a high yield of 93.3% with almost-complete cellulose depletion, affording a guaiacyl–syringyl– p -hydroxyphenyl (G–S–H) type. The incorporation of LNPs in CS markedly enhanced the properties of the CS films. Specifically, the tensile strength of the CS/LNPs5 composite film (14 wt% LNPs) increased by 71.85% and its ultraviolet shielding capability reached 99.90%. A germination rate of 85% was achieved with the CS/LNPs4 (11 wt% LNPs) when the seed tape was tested for radish. Compared with treatments without LNPs, the CS/LNPs composites promote root and stem elongation. This study establishes a closed-loop biorefinery framework that converts lignocellulosic agricultural residues into biomass-derived functional materials.

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) can significantly address the heterogeneity of lignin and enhance its application potential. However, the structure activity relationship between the structure of lignin and LNPs has been underexplored. In this study, lignin was extracted using a ternary deep eutectic solvents (DES) of choline chloride (ChCl)/5-sulfosalicylic acid (5Saa)/γ-valerolactone (GVL). The molecular structures of DES Ⅰ-L, DES Ⅱ-L, and DES Ⅲ-L were regulated by varying the temperature (85, 105, and 125 °C). Compared to softwood kraft lignin (SKL), lignin with small molecular weight was obtained. In particular, good homogeneity (PDI 1.55, 1.58, and 1.59) was found. The dispersion stability and pH response of DES Ⅰ-LNPs, DES Ⅱ-LNPs, and DES Ⅲ-LNPs were remarkable. In particular, DES Ⅱ-LNPs was the smallest (32 nm) and exhibited the highest stability (no flocculation within 90 d). DES-LNPs exhibited high shear viscosity, a gentle shear decay trend, low yield stress and shear sensitivity. The phenolic hydroxyl groups rich in lignin promoted the interaction, leading to an increase in the size of LNPs. Fortunately, its smaller molecular weight formed an effective complement. The structure activity relationship between the structure of lignin and LNPs was established, providing theoretical support for the efficient conversion and application of LNPs.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as the novel kind of green solvents have been received widespread attention. After the addition of molecular solvents, a pseudo-binary system is set up with the advantages such as low cost. A kind of DES (1TEAB: 3EG) was prepared and confirmed, and it is mixed with acetonitrile, ethanol and water. Their density, surface tension and refractive index of the DES and its corresponding pseudo-binary mixtures are explored in depth. In addition to the excess molar volumes, the partial molar volumes, partial molar volume at infinite dilution and their excess molar volumes are also investigated. The molar Gibbs free energy and the corresponding molar surface enthalpy could be deduced from the improved Eӧtvӧs equation. It is suggested that the molar Gibbs free energy model is fit for that of DES and its pseudo-binary systems. In addition, the surface tension deviations and refractive index deviations are figured out. This illustrates that there are fairly strong interactions between DES (1TEAB: 3EG) and molecular solvents, which could attribute to mainly two sides: H-bonding and structural effect. Besides, refractive properties such as the molar refraction and free volume are advised that there are ion–dipole interactions between DES and molecular solvents. Graphical abstract

Polyzwitterionic gels with both positively and negatively charged groups have attracted attention because of their excellent biocompatibility and high water absorption. However, insufficient mechanical properties due to fragile cross-linked networks and low stability due to aqueous solvents are still prominent. In this study, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was introduced into the sulfobetaine zwitterionic monomer DMAPS([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulphonatopropyl)ammonium hydroxide) system. Based on the complexation strategy of sodium alginate (SA) polysaccharide, a polyzwitterionic network skeleton was constructed to prepare a composite eutectogel with high strength, environmental resistance, and high conductivity. The presence of DES enables polyzwitterionic gels to obtain excellent environmental stability at high and low temperatures. Notably, the introduction of SA significantly enhanced the tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and toughness of the eutectogel without affecting the high transparency. This is attributed to the network of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions within the matrix–filler constructed by the hydroxyl-rich and charged groups of SA in the presence of calcium ion complexation. At the same time, the polyzwitterionic network skeleton provides abundant binding sites for ion migration, which endows the eutectogels with excellent ionic conductivity (0.13–0.48 S·m–1). Thanks to its internal porous structure, the composite eutectogel can provide a stable piezoionic output and be used for pressure response and powering LED lights. In addition, supercapacitors and strain sensors assembled on the basis of composite eutectogels proved their potential for applications in areas such as energy storage and human motion monitoring. In conclusion, this study provides important guidance for the construction of biomass ionic network skeletons and the development of high-performance ion-conducting materials.

Driven by surging global lithium demand, highly selective lithium separation from magnesium-rich brines is urgently required. This work systematically investigated the structure–performance relationship of four aryl-substituted phosphates (TOP, DPOP, IPPP, TPP). Moderate aryl substitution widened the coordination difference between Li + and Mg 2+ through electron-withdrawing effects, and DPOP exhibited the optimal balance of extraction capacity and selectivity. A ternary synergistic extraction system was fabricated with DPOP as the primary extractant, P204 to immobilize Fe 3+ , and eco-friendly diethyl succinate (DES) as a polar modifier. DES inhibited third-phase formation at DPOP contents of 10–50 vol.% and produced synergistic solvation via carbonyl groups. Under optimized conditions, the single-stage Li + extraction efficiency achieved ∼73%, and the Li/Mg separation factor reached 1630, nearly 80 times that of the traditional TBP–FeCl 3 system. Synergistic coordination of P204 and DES stabilized Fe 3+ in the organic phase, realizing quantitative lithium stripping with deionized water and avoiding concentrated acid and saponification. The organic phase maintained over 80% extraction efficiency after ten cycles. Slope analysis and FT-IR confirmed the extracted complex LiFeCl 4 •2DPOP•0.1DES. This work transforms DPOP into a sustainable, low-cost, closed loop industrial solution for lithium recovery from high Mg/Li brines.

This work establishes a facile and integrated strategy combining deep eutectic solvent (DES) selective extraction and in situ polymerization to upcycle low-value coal tar phenolics into high-performance defective porous carbon for zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs). Benefiting from strong hydrogen-bonding interaction, aldehyde-functionalized DES achieves efficient separation of phenolic components from coal tar with an extraction efficiency up to 94.73%. Eliminating tedious back-extraction procedures, the phenolic-enriched system realizes pH-regulated in situ polymerization to fabricate three types of phenolic resin precursors with distinct molecular architectures. The three-dimensional, oxygen-rich precursor formed under alkaline conditions induces steric hindrance that suppresses aromatic stacking during carbonization, yielding highly defective porous carbon. Combined with rational activation treatment, all derived carbon materials exhibit well-developed pore structures and favorable capacitive performance. Notably, the extraction phase is innovatively reused to fabricate a highly conductive gel electrolyte. The assembled ZIHC using prepared porous carbon and gel electrolyte achieves a favorable specific capacity of 257.9 mAh g −1 , a high energy density of 186.9 Wh kg −1 , and ultra-long cycling durability. This study clarifies the intrinsic correlation between precursor microstructure, carbon defect configuration and electrochemical energy storage behavior, and provides a new strategy for high-value sustainable utilization of coal tar toward advanced energy storage devices. Graphical An integrated “extraction-polymerization-carbonization” strategy is developed to convert coal tar phenolics into porous carbon. pH-controlled phenolic polymerization affords three kinds of precursors. The precursor from alkaline polymerization suppresses graphitization, generating highly defective porous carbon, which enables the assembled ZIHC to achieve high specific capacity and superior energy density.

Facial nerve injury arising from diseases or clinical interventions can cause significant physiological and psychological harm. Continuous monitoring of facial muscle electrophysiology can mitigate these risks by informing surgical procedures and guiding postoperative rehabilitation. However, conventional electrodes are predominantly invasive and fabricated from mechanically stiff metals that mismatch soft tissues, often leading to secondary injury and discomfort. Here, we develop an ultrasoft eutectogel and employ it as a non-invasive electrode material for a surface electromyography (sEMG) monitoring array. The eutectogel is synthesized by random copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and the zwitterionic monomer 3-[N,N-dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]ammonio]propane-1-sulfonate (SBMA) in a deep eutectic solvent (DES), yielding an electrode that integrates ultra-low modulus, strong adhesion, ionic conductivity, and environmental tolerance. The ultra-low modulus and adhesiveness facilitate conformal, dynamic coupling with epidermal tissues, providing an ideal material platform for non-invasive high-quality acquisition of physiological electrical signals, including facial nerve-related activity. We further validate the feasibility of predicting facial nerve functional integrity using this platform. The eutectogel and the flexible multi-electrode array provide a promising strategy for clinical protection and monitoring of facial nerve function.
