Antibiotics pose significant risks to human health and ecosystems due to their environmental persistence and high hydrophilicity. In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was selected as a target contaminant, and a molten copper chloride-modified sludge-derived biochar (Cu-SBC) was developed to activate periodate (PI) for the efficient removal of antibiotics from water. The results indicated that the introduction of copper significantly altered the surface chemistry of the biochar, thereby simultaneously enhancing its adsorption capacity for SMX and its activation performance toward PI. The Cu-SBC/PI system achieved complete degradation of SMX within 50 min and exhibited strong environmental adaptability and good reusability. Quenching experiments and electrochemical analyses revealed that SMX degradation predominantly occurred via a non-radical pathway facilitated by an electron transfer mechanism. Moreover, seed germination tests confirmed the effective detoxification capability of the Cu-SBC/PI system toward SMX degradation. This study provides a novel strategy for designing sludge-based biochar catalysts and offers a promising technical approach for the efficient degradation of antibiotics in aquatic environments.

Molten salt method was effective to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (CN). Nevertheless, various complex reactions took place in flux, leading to the complicated CN molecular structure. Therefore, besides high photoactivity, it was necessary to illustrate the structure-function relationship. Herein, CN nanosheets (CN-S) were prepared. After post-treated by LiCl molten salts, the photocatalytic H 2 O 2 rate over as-obtained CN-S-LiCl- x was dramatically increased from 22.3 to 81.4 mM·g −1 ·h −1 , much higher than the sample post-treated by NaCl and KCl molten salts. Compared to the initial CN-S, the -C N groups, bulk N-defects and surface N-defects were controllably introduced in CN-S-LiCl- x. These critical structural factors on photocatalytic H 2 O 2 performance were quantitatively studied, and the bulk N-defects displayed the correlation of linear relationship as high as 0.945. Electrochemical tests and DFT calculation indicated bulk N-defects were served as the main O 2 adsorption sites with adsorption energy of −4.33 eV, which not only accelerated surface reaction, but also extended light harvest and improved separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers. In photocatalytic H 2 O 2 mechanism study, one-step two-electron reduction and two-step single-electron reduction performed simultaneously, while the latter was primary. Our work has conducted a detailed analysis on the relationship between various structural factors and H 2 O 2 yield, and identified the key role of bulk N-defects. This provides new ideas to investigate photocatalytic H 2 O 2 evolution mechanism and design efficient CN-based photocatalysts.

Antibiotics (e.g., ofloxacin) pollution is an emerging environmental concern due to its persistence and potential health risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) offer promising solutions, yet their practical application is often limited by catalyst cost and stability. Here, we report the use of natural vivianite—a low-cost iron phosphate mineral—as an efficient peroxymonosulphate (PMS) activator for ofloxacin degradation. Under the optimised conditions, 97 % of ofloxacin was effectively degraded within 60 min. The ofloxacin degradation ratio could still reach 76 % after three consecutive cycles. Mechanistic investigations revealed Mn 2+ and Co 2+ isomorphic substitutions within the vivianite lattice, which induced electron cloud redistribution and promoted the formation of metal–oxygen–metal and metal–oxygen bonds. These structural changes enhanced charge transfer and facilitated PMS adsorption and activation via both surface-bound sites and leached phosphate species. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that degradation proceeded through synergistic radical (·OH, SO 4 · - , O 2 · - ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways. Importantly, the degradation products exhibited significantly lower toxicity than ofloxacin itself, underscoring the environmental relevance of this process. These findings highlight the potential of natural vivianite as a cost-effective and sustainable PMS activator for antibiotic removal in water treatment applications.

It is important yet challenging to enhance immunotherapy responses using biosafe agents due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. To address this challenge, BD3PP was constructed by encapsulating black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs), a synthesized thioredoxin reductase inhibitor 3c, and Dir (the fluorescent dye) into PLGA nanoparticles, followed by conjugation with a PDL1 antagonist for synergistic multimodal therapy and imaging. The mechanism and efficiency of BD3PP were investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular docking, and in vitro and in vivo experiments. The PDL1 antagonist served as a targeting moiety that binds PDL1 on the tumor cell surface, enabling the controlled intracellular release of the three therapeutic agents. Self-passivated bilayer BPQDs converted optical energy into heat for photothermal therapy and generated singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) from O 2 for type Ⅱ photodynamic therapy, showing far superior to non-passivated bilayer BPQDs or bulk BP. Meanwhile, 3c selectively inhibited thioredoxin reductase, leading to the production of · and H 2 O 2 . These effects synergistically induced immunogenic cell death (ICD), promoted macrophage polarization toward the M1 phenotype, and remodeled the tumor microenvironment to facilitate tumor clearance. The near-infrared fluorescent dye Dir enabled real-time imaging both in vitro and in vivo . DFT calculation revealed that BPQDs were ultimately degraded into biocompatible phosphoric acid. Along with the other biocompatible components in BD3PP, biosafety was guaranteed. This research introduces an efficient and biosafe nanoplatform based on self-passivated bilayer BPQDs, which exhibits prolonged blood circulation and enhanced multimodal real-time photothermal and near-infrared imaging. Importantly, this nanoplatform enables integrated photothermal, photodynamic, and targeted therapies, demonstrating promising potential for anti-tumor preclinical and clinical applications.

Densification of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membrane typically requires sintering temperatures above 2000 °C, resulting in high energy consumption and substantial fabrication costs, and conventional SiC membrane exhibit limited removal efficiency for small molecules. To address these challenges, a co-sintering method was employed to fabricate cobaltic oxide (Co 2 O 3 ) loaded SiC catalytic membrane, with the Co 2 O 3 content systematically optimized. Co 2 O 3 functions as both a sintering temperature-lowering aid and an active site for catalytic ozonation of pollutants. Compared to pure SiC membrane (water permeability: 1200 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ; flexural strength: 10.5 MPa), the Co@SiC membrane demonstrated significant improvements in both water permeability (1400 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and mechanical strength (13.0 MPa). Numerical simulation further elucidated the neck formation dynamics. Moreover, Co@SiC membrane effectively degrades 95 % Congo red within 20 min, attributed to the generation of superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations illustrated Co sites can effectively absorb ozone molecules and break O-O bond in ozone to generate •O 2 − . Fukui index analysis further indicated •O 2 − tend to attack N=N double bonds in dye molecules. This study proposes a comprehensive understanding of low-temperature sintering behavior and catalytic ozonation performance of Co 2 O 3 modified composite membrane, offering a sustainable strategy for membrane fabrication and wastewater treatment.

Recent studies highlight piezocatalytic therapy (PCT) as a superior curative strategy owing to its stable dynamic control compared to sonoluminescence-activated sonodynamic therapy (SDT). However, most nano-piezoelectric catalysts' catalytic efficiency in biosafety and biocompatibility is unsatisfactory. Herein, this study modifies the typical piezoelectric material tetragonal barium titanate (T-BTO). It introduces novel manganese (Mn) -coated T-BTO nanoparticles (MCTB) that possess magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability and enhanced PCT effects. The encapsulation of Mn masks the piezoelectric effect of the nanoparticles, and the acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) triggers the stripping of Mn and restoration of the piezoelectric effect of T-BTO, which produces ROS under ultrasonic irradiation. The presence of Mn ions also enhances the MRI property of the tumor site as a contrast agent. Additionally, ultrasonic irradiation promotes the conversion of low-valence Mn into a high-valence state, further stimulating ROS production. The biosafety, therapeutic effects, T1-weighted MRI, and piezoresponse of MCTB are investigated in vitro. Animal studies also indicate that the nanoparticles display good treatment performance when activated by ultrasound and guided by MRI. Therefore, this study develops an MCTB particle that boosts ROS generation, enables tumor-specific ROS release, and enhances T1-weighted MRI, offering a safe PCT approach for tumors.

Antibiotics have become an integral part of human life and production. The presence of sulfachloropyridazine (SCP), one of the most ubiquitous antibiotics, in water has been a growing concern owing to its long persistence and the difficulty in removing it by conventional water treatment processes. This study introduced ozone (O 3 )-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) as an innovative technique of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and the degradation of SCP from water by this method was thoroughly investigated. The impact of a variety of parameters, such as the dosage of SPC, the dosage of O 3 , the pH value, and water matrix constituents, on the removal of SCP was evaluated with regard to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. It was found that the removal effectiveness of SCP improved initially and then decreased with the rising dosage of SPC, with an optimal SPC dose achieved at 20 mg/L. Moreover, •OH, O 2 • − and 1 O 2 played important roles during SCP degradation based on radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. The SCP degradation pathways were predicted using density functional theory (DFT), which primarily involves the cleavage of S-C or S-N bonds and Smiles-type rearrangements, accompanied by hydroxylation. Furthermore, the toxicity of degradation intermediates was evaluated by the ECOSAR 1.1 software in terms of acute toxicity and chronic toxicity, and most of them exhibited lower levels of toxicity. The results can expand the research scope of SPC and reveal significant insights for SPC’s application in controlling antibiotic contamination.

Value-added utilization of biowastes has been a research hot spot in waste-to-resource field. However, the roles of the self-confined trace elements in biowaste-derived carbon have been frequently neglected. Herein, using mango seeds-derived carbon (MSC) as a proof of concept, the pivotal roles of self-confined trace elements in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward Rhodamine B (RhB) removal were rectified. The selected mesoporous MSC 1000 (carbonization at 1000 °C), with more than 10 trace elements (Ca, O, K, Mg, Si, Fe, Cu, etc.), had an ultrahigh BET specific surface area of 1903 m 2 /g. It presented outstanding adsorption capacity, which, in combination with remarkable activity for PMS activation, facilitated total RhB removal within 60 min. Quenching experiments, EPR tests and chemical probes collectively revealed that high-valent metal-oxo species, e.g., Fe(IV) O, generated from self-confined trace metal/metal oxides, dominated RhB mineralization. Furthermore, the secondary 1 O 2 was also produced at pyridinic N and graphite N active sites. In addition, MSC 1000 had prominent adaptability to complicated water matrices. Surprisingly, regeneration by recalcination can improve catalyst’s performances. This study help recognize the critical roles of trace components in carbonaceous catalysts in Fenton-like oxidation toward wastewater decontamination.

Biomass-derived non-metallic electrocatalysis offers a sustainable strategy for pollutant degradation; however, its practical implementation is often hindered by unclear activation mechanisms, limited selectivity, and weak catalytic activity. In this study, we developed an innovative approach to transform common biomass waste into amyloid-like fibrils process (ANFs), thereby maximizing the electrocatalytic performance of metal-free manner. The distinctive ultra-high aspect ratio of ANFs facilitates extensive exposure of active sites, while abundant amino acid-derived N/O-doped defects synergistically enhance the three-electron oxygen reduction pathway, enabling efficient generation of reactive oxygen species. When applied to real high-salinity aquaculture wastewater containing tetracycline (TC), the resulting ANF-based catalysts (ANFCs) demonstrated outstanding degradation efficiency (>85 %) across a wide pH range (3–9), achieving a TC oxidation rate three times higher than that of conventional carbon cloth. The ANFCs delivered a catalytic performance of 22.0 g TC g −1 catalyst A −1 h −1 , on par with many metal-based catalysts. Furthermore, compared to traditional electro-Fenton systems, the ANFC-enabled electro-assisted oxidation processes (ANFC-EAOPs) supported continuous treatment of marine aquaculture wastewater while reducing sludge generation by 90 %. A comprehensive life cycle assessment confirmed the system scalability and environmental sustainability, underscoring its potential as a robust, versatile, and metal-free solution for advanced wastewater treatment and diverse application.

Advanced oxidation processes utilizing peracetic acid (PAA) have garnered significant interest for the removal of micropollutants, while the mechanisms of employing both the light and thermal energy of solar radiation to activate PAA have not been explored. This study adopted the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a photothermal material under solar radiation to synergistically activate PAA for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). The temperature notably increased to a maximum of 63.0 °C under the rGO concentration of 5 mg/L, and an optimal removal efficiency of 92.45 % with a k obs of 0.014 min −1 was achieved. The primary mechanism for CBZ removal was the generation of reactive species through the photoactivation and thermal activation of PAA under solar irradiation. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance analysis identified CH 3 C(O)OO· as the principal contributor to CBZ degradation. Seven potential transformation products of CBZ were identified, and three possible degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of CBZ polluted water was effectively reduced after photothermal-activated PAA treatment. The removal efficiency of CBZ remained above 90 % after four consecutive cycles of rGO reuse. This study comprehensively elucidates the mechanism of photothermal activation of PAA and thus contributes to the degradation of micropollutants.

Developing stable and efficient catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is of critical significance for the remediation of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater, as conventional catalytic systems often suffer from insufficient activity, poor stability, or a narrow pH adaptation range. Herein, sulfur-doped metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived catalysts (Co-BDC@S) were successfully synthesized via a one-step pyrolysis of cobalt(II) 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (Co-BDC) and sulfur powder. Systematic optimization of the synthesis parameters revealed that the Co-BDC@S-700–4 catalyst (where the subscripts "700" and "4" denote the calcination temperature and sulfur doping amount, respectively) exhibits superior PMS activation performance. Specifically, it achieves 97 % removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP, 20 mg/L) within 30 min, accompanied by an ultrahigh initial apparent rate constant of 0.268 min⁻¹ . The system has excellent pH tolerance (3–10) and maintains > 73 % efficiency after 5 cycles (Co leaching <1.0 mg/L), meeting wastewater discharge standards. Mechanistic studies confirm singlet oxygen (¹O₂) as the dominant reactive species, whose high steady-state concentration (5.24 ×10⁻¹² M) is attributed to the synergistic effect of Co₄S₃ and sulfur vacancies facilitating electron transfer and non-radical pathways. Furthermore, ultra-performance Liquid Chromatography Triple Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS) identified 22 transformation intermediates during CIP degradation, and ecological toxicity assessment via the ECOSAR model confirms their significantly reduced environmental risks. This work provides a stable, eco-friendly catalyst and valuable mechanistic insights for designing advanced oxidation systems.

Fe-doped carbon matrices have garnered significant attention as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators for the removal of refractory organic pollutants. However, the role of Fe dopant in PMS activation remains unclear, especially concerning the relative contributions and reaction pathways of high-valent iron oxidations. In this study, a series of Fe-doped carbon nitride (CN) catalysts with varying iron contents was synthesized and utilized for the catalytic degradation of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Results showed that Fe doping significantly enhanced PMS activation, with the highest TCDD degradation rate achieved by Fe-CN-3, exhibiting a 4.6-fold improvement. Quenching experiment revealed that increasing Fe content shifted the degradation mechanism from a radical-dominated process (76.1%) to a Fe V =O-driven nonradical pathway (55.8%); consequently, the Fe-CN-3/PMS system exhibited significant resistance to common environmental interferents. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the Fe(III)-PMS interaction weakened both the O 2 -O 3 and O 3 -H bonds, thereby enabling their thermodynamically feasible cleavage and the subsequent generation of Fe V =O via a coupled electron-proton transfer pathway, which ultimately enhanced the electrophilic σ-attack on TCDD. These findings highlight the criticality of the metal dopant's local coordination environment in steering persulfate activation pathways, guiding the rational design of catalysts for selective oxidant generation.
