Layered MXene-based magnetoelectric composites have been extensively investigated and applied as microwave absorbing (MA) materials. Although multicomponent composite strategies have been proven to significantly improve the MA performance of materials, the fine structural design and optimization of the functional synergy of absorbers at intricate environments remain scientific issues worthy of further exploration. In this study, FeCo@C/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites were synthesized through a combination of chemical vapor deposition and electrostatic self-assembly techniques. The core–shell structure of ultrafine FeCo@C nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 13.51 nm, has effectively mitigated the adverse effects of harsh environmental conditions due to chemical stability of the carbon layer. Furthermore, the integration of ultrafine FeCo@C nanoparticles with a low filler loading contributed to the overall lightweight characteristic. Notably, the FeCo@C/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites with a 20 wt % filling ratio exhibit a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −31.6 dB at 1.7 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.76 GHz at 2.4 mm. The corresponding absorbing coating achieves a maximum reduction in the radar cross-section of 18.86 dBm2. The FeCo@C/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites exhibit the potential for applications in challenging environments, including high-temperature and humid conditions.

Formaldehyde is a significant indoor pollutant that poses serious risks to human health. Developing efficient, green, and renewable photocatalysts is considered one of the most promising strategies for indoor formaldehyde removal. In this work, we employed wood as a catalytic platform and successfully immobilized FeCo Prussian blue analogue nanoparticles (FeCo-PBA NPs) onto its surface. Subsequently, Fe-Co alloy-incorporated and N-doped wood-based carbonaceous photocatalysts (FeCoN@WC) were fabricated via pyrolysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the physico-chemical properties of the as-prepared FeCoN@WC. The results confirmed that FeCo-PBA NPs were successfully loaded onto the vessel walls of the wood, facilitating the formation of Fe-Co alloy and its incorporation into the carbon matrix during pyrolysis. Pyrolyzed FeCo-PBAs produced FeCo alloys and altered Fe/Co oxidation states. FTIR and XPS indicated that FeCoN@WC treated at 600°C had a stable structure with abundant catalytic sites, while XRD confirmed formation of intermediates favorable for photocatalysis. Moreover, FeCoN@WC showed excellent adsorption under dark conditions, with efficiency enhanced by 226.081 %. Meanwhile, the formaldehyde degradation under LED light was 6.796 % higher than in dark conditions. Furthermore, the first-order kinetic constant (k) was highest for FeCoN@WC prepared at 600°C, indicating optimal catalytic activity. Additionally, the FeCoN@WC demonstrated outstanding cycling stability, maintaining performance over multiple uses. This study presents a promising strategy for designing reusable wood-derived, PBA-based photocatalysts for sustainable indoor air purification.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising candidate for solid-state hydrogen storage due to its high theoretical capacity, but its application is limited by high desorption temperatures and sluggish sorption kinetics. In this work, we developed leaf-carbon-supported FeCo bimetallic nanocatalysts (FeCo/C(b)) via a facile impregnation–pyrolysis route and incorporated them into MgH 2 through high-energy ball milling. The resulting MgH 2 +10 wt% FeCo/C(b) composite exhibited a dramatically reduced onset desorption temperature of 200 °C and delivered 6.46 wt% H2 within 20 min at 300 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a desorption peak shift of ∼101 °C and a ∼19 % reduction in apparent activation energy compared with pristine MgH 2 , highlighting the pronounced kinetic improvement. Remarkably, rehydrogenation initiated at only 60 °C, with rapid uptake of ∼6.37 wt% at 175 °C under 3 MPa H 2 , and the composite maintained >99 % capacity retention after 10 cycles. Microstructural characterizations confirmed the homogeneous dispersion and stability of FeCo/C(b) in the MgH 2 matrix, while interfacial mismatch and defect engineering were identified as the key factors facilitating hydrogen diffusion. This study demonstrates that biomass-derived carbon supports, combined with Fe–Co synergistic catalysis, offer an effective and sustainable strategy to achieve low-temperature, reversible hydrogen storage in MgH 2 .

The magnetic component is crucial for achieving a high absorption bandwidth within the microwave absorbing materials, while a high loading rate of magnetic particles often leads to agglomeration, which can degrade the absorption performance. The utilization of short-chain ligands generally enhances the constrained growth effect of carbon materials on magnetic particles in metal-organic framework (MOF) derived materials. In this study, a CoFe/C nanorod derived from a MOF composed of nitrilotriacetic acid and cobalt-iron metal ions has been successfully prepared. The MOF-derived method with constrained growth is employed to suppress the aggregation of alloy microparticles and maintaining a high magnetic particles. The optimized composite exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.88 GHz that could cover the Ku-band. The excellent dispersion structure and high loading rates endowed by CoFe/C nanorods with constrained strategy, would contributed to the enhanced wideband microwave absorbing properties. These findings might provide new guidance for the fabrication of noval broadband microwave absorbing materials with high loading of magnetic nanoparticles.

In advanced oxidation processes, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is a very effective method to degrade pollutants. In this study, a high-efficient PMS activation catalyst Fe Co bimetallic organic framework nanocluster (FeCo-BMOF) was constructed to rapidly degrade pollutants. FeCo-BMOF achieved 100 % degradation efficiency for sulfamethazole (SMX) within 90 s with kinetic constant of 2.659 min −1 . This rate is significantly higher than monometallic MOFs (Fe-MOF and Co-MOF), being 379.9 and 5.6 times greater respectively. Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that, during SMX degradation, non-radical oxidation (singlet oxygen 1 O 2 ) dominated the process. Theoretical calculations indicate that FeCo-BMOF preferred for adsorbing the terminal oxygen of PMS, which enhances the oxidation to PMS, leading to the formation of SO 5 − . Furthermore, the presence of dual active sites (Fe site and Co site) in FeCo-BMOF can working together, helping reduce the energy barrier required to break the O O bond in PMS. This study establishes a theoretical basis for further demonstrating the high efficiency of bimetallic organic frameworks for PMS activation and the development of PMS-based wastewater treatment technologies.

Caffeic acid is a key indicator of wine quality, but its sensitive and accurate detection remains challenging due to the lack of high-performance sensing materials. Metal/N-doped porous carbon (M/NPC) electrocatalysts with abundant catalytic sites are promising to address this issue. Herein, a FeCo nanoalloy encapsulated in NPC (FeCo@NPC) was designed and synthesized via a “covalent organic framework (COF) adsorption–pyrolysis” strategy. The COF template enabled homogeneous dispersion and stabilization of FeCo. The resulting FeCo@NPC exhibited hierarchical porosity, abundant metal–N x sites, and strong bimetallic synergetic effects, leading to exceptional electrocatalytic activity towards caffeic acid oxidation. The constructed sensor achieved high sensitivity (5.195 and 0.895 μA μM −1 ) and selectivity. It was successfully applied for caffeic acid detection in commercial tablets and wines, and further tracked changes in caffeic acid concentration in red wine over post-opening time. This work provides a general design strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for food quality control.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in seawater is notoriously hindered by slow kinetics and high overpotential, compounded by chloride-induced corrosion, which impedes efficient hydrogen production via seawater electrolysis. A key challenge is to devise an OER catalyst that not only mitigates chlorine oxidation and corrosion but is also cost-effective. In this work, the bimetallic iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanoparticles are swiftly encapsulated within N-doped carbon shells in mere seconds using the Joule-heating technique, a process significantly faster than the several hours required by traditional furnace heating. Meanwhile, the high temperature could offer the necessary activation energy for Fe/Co atom redispersion on the carbon shell via forming abundant metal-nitrogen (Co/Fe-N-C) active sites. These Co/Fe-N-C sites exhibit exceptional activity for OER catalysis. Consequently, the sample prepared by Joule-heating at 800 °C for 5 seconds (FeCo@CN-J-5) demonstrates superior OER performance, achieving a current density that is 35 times greater than that prepared without N doping and 6 times higher than that prepared via furnace heating. Moreover, FeCo@CN-J-5 operates stably for 100 hours at 200 mA cm-2 with negligible degradation in the highly corrosive electrolyte of 0.1 M KOH + 0.6 M NaCl, demonstrating its promising potential for practical seawater splitting.

In this study, we successfully synthesized N-doped porous carbon material derived from mango peel, decorated with Co/FeCo nanoparticles, using a hydrothermal method followed by high-temperature carbonization. The resulting Co/FeCo/NPC nanocomposites achieved optimal reflection loss of − 48.4 dB and effective absorption bandwidth of 5.23 GHz in the X band, at 10% filling ratio and matching thickness of 3.4 mm. Furthermore, by optimizing the thickness, the absorption peaks facilitate lower frequencies of C-band, with optimal reflection loss of − 40.30 dB at 5.68 GHz. These remarkable EMW attenuation characteristics are attributed to strong magnetic loss, multiple heterogeneous interface polarization, dipole polarization, and optimal impedance matching. Moreover, coatings based on the Co/FeCo/NPC-3 nanocomposite demonstrated that the radar cross-section was decreased by up to 20.82 dBm 2 , indicating possible radar-absorbing application.

Due to their multiple dissipation mechanisms, low density and easily tailored impedance matching, heterogeneous hollow structures are promising candidates for microwave absorbents towards wideband absorption and lightweight design. In this work, a new type of hollow microspheres with a porous carbon shell embedded with crystalline FeCo alloy nanoparticles have been prepared via a stepwise spray drying–calcination strategy. The effects of both the FeCo/C molar ratio and the calcination temperature on the structure and property of the porous hollow microspheres (PHMs) have been studied. It is found that the effective absorption bandwidth of the as-prepared FeCo/C PHMs surpassed 7.44 GHz at a matching thickness of 2.64 mm, which covers the full Ku-band. Moreover, with an elevated calcination temperature, high microwave absorbing performance can be achieved at a much reduced matching thickness. A probable absorbing mechanism has been proposed involving the synergistic effect of the hollow interior, the porous shell structure, and the electric and magnetic dissipation due to the coexistence of carbon and magnetic metals. This work opens a new pathway to synthesize microwave absorbents with a heterogeneous hollow structure, and may shed some light on the design and controlled preparation of other hollow structures with various shell compositions.

MXene , an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, is widely used as a microwave absorber to defense the electromagnetic pollution in the high-frequency communication. However, how to reasonably reduce the excessive conductivity of the single-layer MXene itself remains a challenge. Herein, via vacuum-assisted filtration, a flexible MXene/FeCo film was prepared by the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged MXene and positively charged FeCo alloy. The continuous layered structure composed of single-layered MXene stacking was destroyed due to the intercalation of the magnetic nanoparticles , resulting in the reduced conductivity and proper impedance matching. Because of the anisotropy associated with different morphologies, the rough surface of nanoflower-like FeCo alloy has better interfacial polarization and magnetic loss capabilities that induced by the more active response sites, confirming by electron holography. The MXene-FeCo nanoflower-like film demonstrated better microwave absorption (MA) performance with the maximum RL value of −43.7 dB at 3.76 GHz, while the RL max reached −36.2 dB at 10.16 GHz of MXene-FeCo nanoplate-like film. Thus this effective frequency adjustment also expands the practical applications of absorbers to deal with different frequency of the outer microwave changes. It is expected that regulating morphology might shed new light on the absorbers designing with tunable MA performance.

Designing readily available and highly active electrocatalysts for water splitting is essential for renewable energy technologies. Here we present the construction of FeCo-FeCoP@C hollow nanocubes encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (FeCo-FeCoP@C@NCCs) through controlled carbonization and subsequent phosphorization of a Prussian blue analogue. With stronger electronic interaction and hollow structure, the as-obtained FeCo-FeCoP@C@NCCs material requires small overpotentials of 91 mV and 280 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH toward hydrogen and oxygen evolution, respectively. More importantly, applying this material for overall water splitting, it only requires 1.64 V to afford 10 mA cm −2 and exhibits impressively durability over 40 h without obvious performance decay. The present approach inspires potentials for the controllable synthesis of multi-component catalysts for practical applications.

In this work, FeCo nanoparticles encapsulated in graphitic carbon layers are derived by direct pyrolysis of Prussian blue/ZIF-67. First, the Prussian blue nanocubes with size of 100–150 nm are selected as cores for growth of ZIF-67 metal organic frameworks . Subsequent direct pyrolysis of Prussian blue/ZIF-67 in nitrogen atmosphere enables the formation of carbon nanospheres with FeCo nanoparticles embedded into the nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon layers. The encapsulation of FeCo nanoparticles into the nitrogen-doped carbon layers favors the electron penetration from the underlying FeCo nanoparticles to the nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon layers, tuning the electron density and the electronic properties at the carbon overlayers and then promoting the both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction activity. By optimizing the ratio between the Prussian blue and ZIF-67, the active and inexpensive carbon layers-encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles achieve high activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction, exhibiting a low overpotential of 106 mV at 10 mA cm −2 as well as a low Tafel slope of 90.0 mV dec −1 . As oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts , the carbon layers-encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles deliver an overpotential of 312 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 40.6 mV dec −1 . Severing as both anode and cathode, the carbon layers-encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles show a potential of 1.495 V at 10 mA cm −2 for water splitting, which is close to the noble metal benchmarks of Pt/C and RuO 2 counterparts. The carbon layers-encapsulated FeCo nanoparticles can be used as an attractive replacement for electrocatalytic water splitting.
