Carbon dioxide radical reducing nitrate to nitrogen gas in a UV/Fe(III)-oxalate system

Jialin Chen,Ruina Zhang,Dong Chen,Jianyong Liu,Shanping Chen

The generation process for the highly reductive carbon dioxide radical ( CO 2 − ) in the Fe(III)-oxalate system is enhanced under UV irradiation and used in nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction with improved product selectivity to nitrogen (N 2 ). The combination of Fe(III) and residual oxalate forms Fe(III)-oxalate complexes again for an Fe(II)/Fe(III) species cycle and achieves generation of CO 2 − radical continually. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum demonstrates the existence of CO 2 − radicals in this process. Some of the important control factors, such as initial concentrations of ferric ions (Fe(III)) (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mM), NO 3 − (14, 21, and 42 mg N/L), oxalate (3, 7, and 10 mM), and pH values (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6), are systematically assessed for NO 3 − reduction efficiency and N-species selectivity. Among all the control factors mentioned, pH is a key parameter with an important role in the NO 3 − reduction process. Excellent NO 3 − reduction efficiency (∼90 %) was achieved at pH 3 in the presence of 1 mM Fe(III) and 10 mM oxalate under UV irradiation for 120 min. High Fe(III) and oxalate concentrations promote NO 3 − removal. In addition, there was an increase in the NO 3 − removal amount with a greater initial NO 3 − concentration. About 60 % of NO 3 − can be selectively reduced to N 2 with low selectivity to NO 2 − (∼3.4 % of total N) and NH 4 + (∼15.7 % of total N). In general, the UV/Fe(III)-oxalate system provided an alternative way to improve NO 3 − removal performance and selectivity to form N 2 in water and wastewater remediation processes.

Mechanism study of CoS2/Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate catalysis system: The vital role of sulfur vacancies

Liyuan Wu,Pengpeng Guo,Xin Wang,Haiyan Li,Angzhen Li,Kaiyu Chen

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation methods have attractive advantages in advanced oxidation process (AOPs) due to their powerful ability of directly or indirectly generating various reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, trace amount of Fe(III) ions were added into the commercial-CoS 2 /PMS system to improve the CoS 2 /PMS decomposition for organics removal. The organics removal efficiency could reach >90% towards methylene blue (MB), diclofenac sodium (DCF), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and bisphenol A (BPA) in the CoS 2 /Fe(III)/PMS system, with the kinetic apparent rate constant k obs of 0.141, 0.206, 0.247 and 0.091 min −1 , respectively. The synergistic effect between Fe(III) ions and sulfur-vacancies on CoS 2 for PMS degradation were revealed for the first time in cobalt sulfides/PMS system. Quenching experiments and ESR analysis proved that 1 O 2 was the major ROS and was produced mainly by the hydrolysis of SO 5 • – . Besides, the high degradation efficiency was obtained by the contribution of SO 4 • – and • OH. Electron spin–resonance spectroscopy (ESR), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Raman spectrum data revealed that the addition of Fe(III) ions could optimize the intensity of sulfur vacancies on the CoS 2 surface, which hindered the PMS reduction ability of Co(II), but accelerated the PMS oxidation to form 1 O 2 . The degradation path of MB was analyzed by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS). The mechanism studies speculated that the sulfur vacancies of CoS 2 provided the binding sites for Fe(III) ions with Co(II), which facilitated the PMS activation by Co(III).

Clothianidin loaded TA/Fe (III) controlled-release granules: improve pesticide bioavailability and alleviate oxidative stress

Tingting Liu,Jian Luo,Shangke Liu,Tongtong Li,Haolin Li,Lingyan Zhang,Wei Mu,Nan Zou

Neonicotinoid insecticides have been widely used due to their excellent systemic activity and high insecticidal activity, but the problems of low utilization rate and environmental risk have attracted widespread attention. Controlled-release technology is an approach to realize the efficient utilization of pesticides and reduce environmental pressure. In this study, clothianidin (CLO) controlled-release granules ( [email protected] TA (tannic acid)/Fe (III)) were prepared with TA/Fe (III) coordination chelate as the coating material. These granules exhibited the core-shell structure with 500–1200 µm of particle size, and had obvious release performance and hydrolysis behavior of coating materials. Pot experiments by root application showed that the [email protected] /Fe (III) showed balanced and lasting control efficacy to broad bean aphids. The plants have a stronger capacity for absorption and enrichment and a higher utilization rate of CLO for [email protected] /Fe (III), than those for 10% suspension concentrate (SC). One of the hydrolysates of coating materials, TA, a polyphenolic antioxidant, could improve the bioaccumulation amount and alleviating the oxidative stress response of CLO in plants. Our study illustrates that the controlled-release granules base on TA have efficient controlled-release properties and free radical scavenging performance that may eventually be used as pesticide carriers and antioxidants in the field of plant protection.

Tumor Microenvironment-Responsive Fe(III)–Porphyrin Nanotheranostics for Tumor Imaging and Targeted Chemodynamic–Photodynamic Therapy

Bing Wang,Yeneng Dai,Yingjie Kong,Wenyu Du,Haiyang Ni,Honghai Zhao,Zhiquan Sun,Qingming Shen,Meixing Li,Quli Fan

The development of effective and safe tumor nanotheranostics remains a research imperative. Herein, tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive Fe(III)–porphyrin (TCPP) coordination nanoparticles (FT@HA NPs) were prepared using a simple one-pot method followed by modification with hyaluronic acid (HA). FT@HA NPs specifically accumulated in CD44 receptor-overexpressed tumor tissues through the targeting property of HA and upon endocytosis by tumor cells. After cell internalization, intracellular acidic microenvironments and high levels of glutathione (GSH) triggered the rapid decomposition of FT@HA NPs to release free TCPP molecules and Fe(III) ions. The released Fe(III) ions could trigger GSH depletion and Fenton reaction, activating chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, the fluorescence and photodynamic effects of the TCPP could be also activated, achieving controlled reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and avoiding side effects on normal tissues. Moreover, the rapid consumption of GSH further enhanced the efficacy of CDT and photodynamic therapy (PDT). The in vivo experiments further demonstrated that the antitumor effect of these nanotheranostics was significantly enhanced and that their toxicity and side effects against normal tissues were effectively suppressed. The FT@HA NPs can be applied for activated tumor combination therapy under the guidance of dual-mode imaging including fluorescence imaging and magnetic resonance imaging, providing an effective strategy for the design and preparation of TME-responsive multifunctional nanotheranostics for precise tumor imaging and combination therapy.

Shewanella Drive Fe(III) Reduction to Promote Electro-Fenton Reactions and Enhance Fe Inner-Cycle

Mingyue Zhao,Zhicheng Cui,Liang Fu,Fabrice Ndayisenga,Dandan Zhou

The slow reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in electro-Fenton technology limits pollutant removal and causes Fe sludge production. This study hypothesizes that Shewanella, a dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria, can accelerate the iron reduction of the Fenton reaction. A Shewanella biofilm coupled with Fe2O3 coated electrode (F/S) was used to drive the electro-Fenton reaction, and compared the results with the singlet Fe2O3 (F) anode and Shewanella biofilm anode (S). Meanwhile, dissolved oxygen (DO) is studied as an important influencing factor. The suitable DO was verified at ∼2 mg/L, phenol removal of F/S was 67% higher than that of the sum of three other singlet systems. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 72% and 50% higher than that of F and S, respectively. F/S corrosion current (Icorr) was 6.3 times higher than F, and induced hematite to transform into Fe2PO5 and FeOOH on the anode. Long-term operation showed that phenol was almost 100% removed for F/S; COD removal was generally 20% higher than F; thus, the toxicity of the effluent could be significantly decreased. The total Fe loss did not exceed 10% at the end of operation. This paper provides a feasibly novel method for electro-Fenton reaction, by employing Fe-reducing bacteria.

Fe(III) Mixed IP6@Au NPs with Enhanced SERS Activity for Detection of 4-ATP

Zhang Lei,Weng Yi-jin,Liu Xiao,Gu Wen,Zhang Xia,Han Lei

Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has been widely applied in many research fields such as biological detection and chemical analysis. However, for the common Au nanoparticles, it’s too hard to guarante the three aspects: the great enhanced effect, the controllable aggregation and the uniformity of nanoparticles, the environmental friendliness and biocompatibility of nanoparticles. In this paper, phytate acid (IP6)-coated Au nanoparticles (IP6@Au NPs) are more stable and have a higher enhancement factor than Au nanoparticles. In order to achieve the uniformity of the spherical IP6-coated@Au nanoparticles (IP6@Au NPs), IP6 was used as a soft template. In the presence of IP6, IP6@Ag nanoparticles were first synthesized by reducing AgNO 3 with trisodium citrate, then IP6@Au NPs were obtained by reducing HAuCl 4 with Ag nanoparticles. The IP6@Au NPs exhibit excellent Raman signal enhancement by using p-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the probe molecules. The effects of Fe 3+ on the performance of IP6@Au NPs SERS substrates were also studied. The results show that SERS has the best enhancement effect when adding proper amount of Fe 3+ (0.56 PPM), and the limit of detection was 10 −7  M 4-ATP.

Homogeneous photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethazine induced by Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes: Kinetics, mechanism and products

Zhuozhi Ouyang,Chen Yang,Junheng He,Qian Yao,Bijie Zhang,Hanming Wang,Yu Jiang,Jini Zhou,Yurong Deng,Yanjun Liu,Jingjing Yang,Guining Lu,Zhi Dang

Sulfamethazine (SMT), taken as model compound, have been exposed to a photocatalytic system driven by ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation with Fe(III) and three carboxylic acids (citric, tartaric and malic acid). The kinetic experiments, quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), species model theoretical calculation, density functional theory (DFT) and intermediates analyses, were conducted to analyze the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and underlying mechanism of Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes on photocatalytic degradation of SMT. The results indicated the complexes easily induced the degradation under UV irradiation. Enough hydroxyl radicals ( · OH) were produced and the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) originated from the self-sensitized oxidation. An interaction among ROS, Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes and SMT was firstly proposed. The active sites and groups were characterized through Frontier electron densities (FEDs), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) and Two-dimensional correlation FTIR spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-CoS) analyses. The transformation pathway mainly included four reactions: hydroxylation, SO 2 extrusion, Smiles-type rearrangement and S-N bond cleavage. The system also had an application potential for removing SMT from practical water.

Removal of Fe(III) from Ni-Co-Fe chloride solutions using solvent extraction with TBP

Xintao Yi,Guangsheng Huo,Wei Tang

The extraction of Fe(III), Ni(II) and Co(II) from a Ni(II)-Co(II) solution containing Fe(III) was analyzed in a chloride medium using a mixed extractant consisting of 50% ( v /v) tributyl phosphate (TBP), 20% (v/v) 2-octanol and 30% (v/v) kerosene. The extraction of 0.5 mol/L Fe(III) in 4 mol/L hydrochloric acid reached 97%, and the consumption of chloride ions was investigated. Nickel(II) ions were not detectably extracted by TBP, with an inclusion of <1.1%. Compared with Fe(III), TBP extracted only a small amount of Co(II). The iron complexes formed by TBP and 2-octanol were [H 2 FeCl 4 · 2TBP] and [H 2 FeCl 4 · 5(2-octanol)], and the possible compositions of Co-containing extracts were [H 2 CoCl 4 · 2TBP] and [H 2 CoCl 4 ] · n[2-octanol]. An industrial process consisting of two-step extraction was designed to achieve the separation of Co(II) and Fe(III), resulting in a decrease in the Fe/Co mass ratio from 0.46 to <3.5 × 10 −4 in the raffinate.

A fluorescent polyurethane foam based on rhodamine derivative as Fe(III) sensor in pure water

Yinyan Chen,Yiban Wu,Yifan Zhu,Saiqi Tian

Rhodamine salicylaldehyde was synthesized, and its structure was determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H NMR analysis as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Then a fluorescent polyurethane foam was obtained via incorporation of the prepared rhodamine salicylaldehyde, and the fluorescence sensing behavior for Fe 3+ was systematically investigated. Results showed that the fluorescent polyurethane foam produced higher fluorescence in the presence of Fe 3+ in pure water, due to the coordination for Fe 3+ binding leading to ring-opened amide form. The limit of detection was calculated to be 1.64 × 10 −6 mol L –1 . This fluorescent polyurethane foam can also recognize Fe 3+ with good selectivity. © 2021 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Stabilizing Reactive Fe(III) Clusters by Freeze-Dry/Solvent-Exchange To Benchmark Iron Hydrolysis Pathways

Wei Wang,Mehran Amiri,Tao Huang,Lev N. Zakharov,Yining Zhang,May Nyman

Isolating Fe(III) clusters from water without stabilizing ligands is significantly challenged by the high acidity of Fe3+-bound water, leading to uncontrolled precipitation of iron oxyhydroxides. Here we demonstrate a freeze-drying solvent-exchange method that enabled the isolation of a metastable Fe(III) sulfate decameric cluster formulated [Fe10O2(SO4)12(OCH3)2]·14CH3OH (Fe10). Without stabilization by solvent-exchange, the aqueous species undergoes rapid conversion to the iron sulfate mineral schwertmannite. Monitoring the hydrolysis process from cluster intermediates to schertmannite by small-angle X-ray scattering, we observe the progression from Fe10 to 37 Å soluble nanoparticles prior to the precipitation process. This condensation behavior of Fe10 is further exploited to develop a simple laboratory synthesis of schwetmannite. In addition, we demonstrate the versatility of the freeze-drying solvent-exchange method by isolating Al(III), Zn(II), and Cd(II) substituted Fe(III) sulfate clusters. The freeze-drying solvent-exchange method provides a unique opportunity to isolate cluster intermediates and models to aid in our understanding of metal-ion hydrolysis processes in environmental, material science, and geological studies.

A New Insight of Graphene oxide-Fe(III) Complex Photochemical Behaviors under Visible Light Irradiation

Liu Renlan,Zhu Xiaoying,Chen Baoliang

Graphene oxide (GO) contains not only aromatic carbon lattice but also carboxyl groups which enhanced the aqueous solubility of GO. To study the transformation of GO nanosheets in natural environments, GO aqueous dispersion was mixed with Fe 3+ ions to form photoactive complex. Under visible light irradiation, Fe(III) of the complex would be reduced to Fe(II) which could subsequently reduce highly toxic Cr(VI) to Cr 3+ . The electron of the reduction was contributed by the decarboxylation of carboxyl groups on GO and iron was acting as a catalyst during the photoreduction. On the other hand, the consumption of carboxyl groups may convert GO to rGO which are tend to aggregate since the decreased electrostatic repulsion and the increased π-π attraction. The formed Cr 3+ may be electrostatically adsorbed by the rGO sheets and simultaneously precipitated with the aggregated rGO sheets, resulting the effective removal of chromium and GO nanosheets from the aqueous environment. This study may shed a light on understanding the environmental transformation of GO and guide the treatment of Cr(VI).

H2O2-Responsive MB–BSA–Fe(III) Nanoparticles as Oxygen Generators for MRI-Guided Photodynamic Therapy

Zhen Wen-Yao,Bai Jing,Jia Xiao-Dan,Wu Lie,Jiang Xiu-E

The local tumor hypoxia has become one of the main obstacles for photodynamic therapy (PDT).To break through this barrier, the fabrication of O 2 -evolving nanoplatform has been more significant. Herein, the uniform methylene blue (MB)–bovine serum albumin (BSA)–Fe(III) nanoparticles (MB–BSA–Fe(III) NPs) were successfully synthesized by biomineralization approach. MB–BSA–Fe(III) NPs show high loading capacity of MB, and Fe(ΙΙΙ) has excellent catalytic performance towards abundant H 2 O 2 in cancer cells to generate O 2 , overcoming tumor hypoxia. All these combination effects remarkably increase the therapeutic efficiency of PDT, resulting in almost complete destruction of cancer cells. Most importantly, MB–BSA–Fe(III) NPs exhibit T 2- magnetic resonance imaging, which have the potential for precise visualization of the tumor location. Our results demonstrate that MB–BSA–Fe(III) is a novel H 2 O 2 -responsive and O 2 -evolving nanoplatform and it has great potential for clinical applications such as cancer diagnosis, treatment or drug delivery.
