Photostriction of ilmenite-type ceramics ATiO3 (A = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni and Mn) under visible light

Xiu Li,Zhanheng Yan,Yanglin Shen,Wanjin Liu,Jun Ding

Oxides with the ABO 3 chemical formula play a crucial role in studying photostriction in inorganic materials. In this study, the photostrictive behavior of ilmenite-type ceramics ATiO 3 (where A = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, and Mn) was investigated under visible light irradiation. Among the ceramics investigated, CoTiO 3 showed the highest photostriction of approximately 0.1 % under 405, 520, and 650 nm light irradiation. The photostrictive response decreased successively in FeTiO 3 , MnTiO 3 , NiTiO 3 , and MgTiO 3 . Temperature and thermal expansion tests revealed that the deformation of the ceramics caused by the photothermal effect accounted for approximately half of their photostriction. Raman and charge transfer analyses indicated that the photostriction of the ceramics depended significantly on their crystal structure. Thus, the ceramics exhibited distinct photostrictive performances. This study highlights the connection between the crystal structure and photostrictive performance of ilmenite-type ceramics, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanism of photostriction in inorganic materials.

Preparation and Photocatalytic Reduction Performance of Cr(VI) by NH2-MIL-101(Fe, Co) Composite Catalyst

Tongxin Xiao,Kangyue Qiao,Guodong Hao,Songyao Du,Yue Wang,Chao Sui

This study employed a solvothermal method to prepare an NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe, Co) bimetallic organic framework composite catalyst aimed at enhancing the photocatalytic reduction performance of Cr(VI). The experimental results show that introducing Co into the single-metal NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) does not alter the material's octahedral structure. However, the bimetallic synergistic effect shifts the light absorption range to the red end of the spectrum, reduces the bandgap, and significantly improves carrier separation efficiency. Under visible light irradiation, the NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe, 0.15Co) catalyst exhibited outstanding photocatalytic performance, achieving a reduction efficiency of 94.7% for Cr(VI) within 40 minutes and 100% within 50 minutes, with a reaction rate constant 4.7 times that of the single-metal NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe). Free radical capture experiments further revealed that ·O 2 - is the key active species in the Cr(VI) reduction process, while photo-generated holes in the valence band can oxidise OH - to ·OH, synergistically participating in the reaction. Additionally, cyclic stability experiments showed that the catalyst maintained 85.8% reduction efficiency after five cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and practical application potential.

Magnetic CoFe2O4 nanocrystals derived from MIL-101 (Fe/Co) for peroxymonosulfate activation toward degradation of chloramphenicol

Liu-Xi Yang,Jia-Cheng E. Yang,Ming-Lai Fu

In this study, porous magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanocrystals (NCs) were successfully synthesized by using bimetal-organic framework (MOF) as a precursor, and used as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of chloramphenicol (CAP) in the solution. The structure and physicochemical properties of CoFe 2 O 4 NCs were thoroughly examined by a series of characterization techniques. The results revealed as-synthesized CoFe 2 O 4 had a nanorod-shaped structure with high specific surface area (83.00 m 2  g −1 ) and pore volume (0.31 cm 3  g −1 ). Furthermore, the degradation efficiency (100%) and the removal of total organic carbon (68.09%) were achieved after 120 min with 0.1 g/L CoFe 2 O 4 NCs, 2 mM PMS and 10 mg/L CAP at pH of 8.20. In addition, effects of catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, initial pH values, CAP concentration and co-existing anions as well as natural organic matters in the solution on the degradation efficiencies were studied and all the removal can be well fitted with pseudo-first-order kinetic model (R 2  > 0.96). Sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) were proved to be two main reactive species for CAP removal in CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system based on quenching experiments. CAP was degraded by the main pathways of dichlorination, denitration, decarboxylation , hydroxylation, ring cleavage and chain cleavage on CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system through high performance liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry analysis. We believe that this study would be very meaningful to promote the applications of MOFs-derived catalysts on the SO 4 •− based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) for the environmental remediation.

OCNTs encapsulating Fe-Co PBA as efficient chainmail-like electrocatalyst for enhanced heterogeneous electro-Fenton reaction

Song Cheng,Chen Shen,Hao Zheng,Fuqiang Liu,Aimin Li

Preparing heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) catalysts without sacrificing activity towards the two-electron (2e − ) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a challenge, since Fenton-like active sites consist mainly of transition metals that prefer the 4e − ORR pathway. In this study, oxidized carbon nanotubes (OCNTs), which are promising ORR catalysts for the 2e − ORR, were uniformly attached to the surface of Prussian blue analogue (PBA) microcubes, forming a unique chainmail-like catalyst (OCNTs/PBA). 50 mg/L of sulfamethazine (SMZ) was completely removed within 30 min over OCNTs/PBA HEF process, with the first-order kinetic constant increased by 287.2 % compared with that PBA alone. To reveal the mechanism behind the enhanced catalytic activity, several possible interactions between the OCNTs and PBA were proposed and investigated further. This study not only offers a facile method to prepare a chainmail-like HEF catalyst, but also provides valuable insights into the rational design of HEF electrocatalysts with dual Fenton-like and ORR activity.

Perovskite oxide LaMO3-δ (M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) cathode for efficient electroreduction of nitrate

Wen-Jian Yang,Li-Hui Yang,Han-Jun Peng,Si-Hao Lv,Hafiz Muhammad Adeel Sharif,Wei Sun,Wei Li,Cao Yang,Hui Lin

Electroreduction removal of nitrate (NO 3 – -N) is considered as a promising approach to solve its adverse effects on environment and human health, where efficient and cheap catalysts are required. Perovskite-based catalysts showed a versatile catalytic ability for wide range of redox reactions, but seldom applied for NO 3 – -N reduction. Herein, four perovskite oxide cathodes, LaMO 3-δ (M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) were prepared and used for the reduction of NO 3 – -N. The Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type La 2 CuO 4 exhibited the best NO 3 – -N catalytic activity among the four perovskite oxide cathodes, with a removal rate of 11.7 × 10 -3 min −1 . The high selectivity of NH 4 + -N (82.4 ± 2.2%) indicated that NH 4 + -N was the main final product for NO 3 – -N electroreduction at La 2 CuO 4 cathode, but 100% of N 2 selectivity could be obtained with addition of 1000 and 1500 mg/L Cl - as the electro-assisted chlorination process. The mechanism of NO 3 – -N electroreduction occurred by both electron- and H*-mediated pathway, and the oxygen vacancies and redox cycle of Cu(I)-Cu(II)-Cu(I) were proposed as the accommodation sties and direct electron sources for NO 3 – -N reduction. Generally, this study opens a novel avenue for the development of earth-abundant, cost-effective catalyst with effective NO 3 – -N electroreduction.

Carbon-quantum-dots-involved Fe/Co/Ni phosphide open nanotubes for high effective seawater electrocatalytic decomposition

Shujuan Lv,Ying Deng,Qian Liu,Ziqi Fu,Xiaobin Liu,Minghui Wang,Zhenyu Xiao,Bin Li,Lei Wang

The hollow materials with open structure can accelerate the mass transfer and bubble release rate, which have attracted tremendous attention for electrocatalytic water splitting. In this work, a unique tri-metal phosphide open nanotube structure [FeCoNiP@carbon quantum dots, FCNP@CQDs] is firstly fabricated by a selected etching and phosphating process with a MIL-88A@CQDs (MIL stands for Material of Institute Lavoisier) as the precursor. Benefiting from their open structure, FCNP@CQDs exhibit excellent catalytic performance. In alkaline seawater solution, a low overpotential of 268 mV is required to reach 20 mA cm −2 current density for oxygen evolution reaction, while the η 20 of hydrogen evolution reaction is 150 mV. The FCNP@CQDs//FCNP@CQDs electrolyzer requires a voltage of 1.61 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 . The integrated strategy of CQDs-doping and construction of hollow open structures may open a new and relatively unexplored path for fabricating high-performance seawater splitting catalysis.

Dandelion-like P-Doped Fe-Co-Se Grown on Carbon Cloths for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Zheng Yingping,Yu Dehua,Zhang Ke,Xu Wei,Ma Kaili,Wang Yuhang,Lou Yongbing

As a representative anodic reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is often combined with hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, and other cathodic reactions. Bimetallic selenides can satisfy the requirement of efficiency and economy for OER. However, the OER performance of Fe-Co-Se is less than satisfactory, restricted by the limited inherent active sites. Therefore, by doping P into Fe-Co-Se, the electron density and mass transfer were successfully adjusted. The 3D dandelion-like flower Fe-Co-Se-P/CC showed η 10 of 210 mV and the 45.3 mV dec −1 Tafel slope better than Fe-Co-Se/CC and RuO 2 . Experimental investigations demonstrated that outstanding OER activity was ascribed to the double modulation influences of P dopant both in electron environment and morphology which could not only improve conductivity but also enrich catalytic reactive sites. This work presents another choice for the design of a transition metal OER catalyzer and propels the development of electrocatalytic oxygen production to higher efficiency and lower cost. Graphical Abstract 3D dandelion-like flowers Fe - Co-Se-P structure anchored on carbon cloth has been firstly synthesized as economy and efficient OER electrocatalyst, which displays outstanding catalytic perform ance (equipped with 210 mV low overpotential at η 10 ) and stability benefited from the double modulation effect of P doping on the electronic environment and morphology.

Pt-Fe-Co Ternary Metal Single Atom Catalyst for toward High Efficiency Alkaline Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ruimin Zhang,Ke Wang,Peng Wang,Yan He,Zhiming Liu

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) within carbon matrix became one of the most promising alternatives to noble metal-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although SACs have significant benefits in reducing the total catalyst cost, it also has the disadvantages of weak interaction between atoms and poor stability. Hence, there is still much room for improvement for the catalyst activity. In response, we designed a Fe-Co-Pt ternary metal single atom catalyst anchored on covalent organic framework (COF)-derived N-doped carbon nanospheres (Pt, Fe, Co/N-C). Due to effective charge transfer between Pt single atom and neighboring Fe-Co components, an intense electron interaction can be established within the Pt, Fe, Co/N-C catalyst. This is beneficial for enhancing charge transfer efficiency, modulating d electronic structure of Pt center and weakening oxygen intermediate adsorption, thus distinctly accelerating ORR catalytic kinetics. As expected, the half-wave potential of Pt, Fe, Co/N-C was 0.845 V, much higher than those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (0.835 V), Pt/N-C (0.79 V) and Fe, Co/N-C (0.81 V) counterparts. Moreover, the Pt, Fe, Co/N-C catalyst demonstrated much-improved cycling stability and methanol tolerance. Keywords:oxygen reduction reaction;electrocatalysts;single atom;ternary metal;kinetics

CeO2-supported Fe, Co and Ni toward CO2 hydrogenation: Tuning catalytic performance via metal-support interaction

Bolang Li,Fei Wang,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Min Chen,Changbin Zhang

The chemical transformation of CO 2 produces carbon compounds that can be used as precursors for the production of chemicals and fuels. Here, we investigated the activity and selectivity of the transition metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) supported on CeO 2 catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation at atmospheric pressure. We found that Ni/CeO 2 shows the highest CO 2 conversion compared with Fe/CeO 2 and Co/CeO 2 . Besides, Co/CeO 2 and Ni/CeO 2 exhibit nearly 100% CH 4 selectivity while Fe/CeO 2 inclines to produce CO. The characterization results show that the metal-support interaction order is Fe/CeO 2  > Co/CeO 2  > Ni/CeO 2 , the weak metal-support interaction over Ni/CeO 2 benefits the activation of H 2 and then promotes the activity of CO 2 hydrogenation. Additionally, in situ DRIFTS results demonstrate that monodentate formate species rather than bidentate formate are the active intermediates. The main route of CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 is that CO 2 is firstly transformed to m-HCOO∗ and then direct hydrogenation of the m-HCOO∗ to CH 4 . This study provides insights into the understanding of the mechanisms of CO 2 hydrogenation on CeO 2 based catalysts.

Antibacterial Activity of M-MOF Nanomaterials (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn): Impact of Metal Centers

Ao Ding,Yupeng He,Fei-Fei Chen,Yan Yu

Bacterial infections result in significant burdens on public health, especially with the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance owing to the overuse of antibiotics. The development of the next-generation nanoantibacterial materials as alternatives to antibiotics is urgently needed. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been emerging as promising antibacterial materials. However, the impact of metal centers on the properties and antibacterial activity of MOFs has not been clarified to date. In this work, five M-MOF nanomaterials (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) are synthesized with 2-methylimidazole as an organic ligand. Subsequently, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration, and time-kill curves are studied to evaluate their antibacterial activity. In addition, the destruction of the bacterial cells after treatment with M-MOFs is observed via scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the Co-MOF and Zn-MOF polyhedra exhibit optimal antibacterial activity. They can effectively inhibit the growth of both Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus at a low concentration. On the other hand, the Fe-MOF irregular particles show the weakest antibacterial activity among five M-MOFs and the antibacterial activity of the Ni-MOF and Cu-MOF nanosheets are comparable to each other. The huge difference in antibacterial activity of M-MOFs is attributed to the difference in the shape and size, specific surface area, surface charge, ion release, and production of reactive oxygen species. Overall, this study clarifies the relationship between metal centers in M-MOFs and their antibacterial activity.

Divergent Performances of ZIF-67-Derived Fe, Co, and FeCo Catalysts in Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Ciprofloxacin Degradation

Li Huanxuan,Wei Xueheng,Gao Xing,Liu Chen,Li Ning,Xu Chen,Huang Jingang,Liu Xiuyan,Xu Shaodan

The degradation of antibiotics remains a major and persistent challenge in wastewater treatment. This study reports the synthesis of three distinct catalysts from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) precursor through pyrolysis at 800 °C, namely ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800. Comprehensive characterization (e.g., X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy analyses) confirmed their graphitic carbon matrix, specific metallic phases, and unique polyhedral morphologies. These catalysts were employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Strikingly divergent catalytic performances were observed, with CIP degradation rate constants of 0.0027, 0.0731, and 0.0504 min –1 for ZIF-67(Fe)-800, ZIF-67(Co)-800, and ZIF-67(FeCo)-800, respectively. Furthermore, the bimetallic ZIF-67(FeCo)-800 demonstrated consistently inferior performance in activating both peroxydisulfate and sodium percarbonate compared to PMS, resulting in significantly lower CIP degradation rates of 52% and 87%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations using electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests revealed that hydroxyl radical ( · OH), sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the dominant reactive species in both the ZIF-67(Fe)-800/PMS and ZIF-67(Co)-800/PMS systems. In contrast, the ZIF-67(FeCo)-800/PMS system operated via a distinct pathway, primarily generating SO 4 •− , accompanied by · OH, 1 O 2 , and superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ). Notably, H 2 PO 4 − and HCO 3 − exhibited strong inhibitory effects on CIP degradation, while SO 4 2− and CH 3 COO − led to modest rate enhancements. Overall, this work provides a rational framework for designing MOF-derived catalysts and highlights their potential for application in advanced oxidation processes aimed at removing pharmaceutical pollutants.

Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Carbon Nanofiber Supported Fe/Co Bimetallic MOFs for Efficient Degradation of Ceftiofur Sodium

Pei Liu,Ao-Tian Gu,Jian Chen,Jun Chen,Zi-Rui Tian,Lei-Lei Gu,Yi Yang

With the rapid development of the pharmaceutical industry and animal husbandry, conventional wastewater treatment plants have difficulty effectively degrading the widely occurring ceftiofur sodium (CEF) in aquatic environments. To address this issue, this study successfully loaded Fe/Co-ZIF onto carbon nanofibers (CNF), thereby preparing Fe/Co-ZIF@CNF composites with well-dispersed supported materials and a stable structure. The as-prepared Fe/Co-ZIF@CNF was further applied in a persulfate-based advanced oxidation system (SR-AOPs) for CEF degradation and exhibited good catalytic performance. When the Fe/Co molar ratio was 1.25:1, the Fe/Co-ZIF1.25material achieved a CEF degradation efficiency, kobsvalue, and TOC removal rate of 94.0%, 0.135 min−1, and 43.8%, respectively. Radical quenching experiments preliminarily indicated that SO4•−played a dominant role in the reaction system, while •OH and1O2also made non-negligible contributions to CEF degradation. This work provides a new strategy for constructing composite catalysts based on carbon nanofiber-supported polymetallic MOFs.
