A ferric citrate derived Fe-N-C electrocatalyst with stepwise pyrolysis for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Min Zhang,Bolong Yang,Ting Yang,Yahui Yang,Zhonghua Xiang

Unremitting and intensive researches about efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts are necessary for large-scale commercial applications of fuel cells, while iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon (Fe-N-C) materials has become one of the most promising electrocatalysts to replace Pt-based noble metal catalysts . However, the traditional Fe-doped ZIF with rhomb dodecahedron morphology limits the exposure of active sites and the utilization of atoms, even affecting the performance of the catalyst. Herein, a Fe/N co-doped catalyst with a flower-like morphology was prepared using ferric citrate source along with secondary NH 3 heat treatment. The optimal catalyst (termed as 4Fe citrate -N-C-3) showed distinguished oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with a half-wave potential of 0.8 and 0.9 V ( vs . RHE) in acid and alkaline media, respectively. In addition, 4Fe citrate -N-C-3 maintained more than 80% of original activity even after 50,000 s which is superior to the benchmark Pt/C. The strategy of controlling morphology and composition is meaningful for the optimization of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for ORR in fuel cells or metal-air batteries .

S-Doped Fe–N–C Single-Atom Nanozyme with Enhanced Oxidase-Like Activity for Colorimetric Detection of Serotonin

Haoqiang Zhang,Fuying Zhu,Tao Song,Yisong Ju,Congzhong Yang,Tianshu Zhang,Jiang Du,Liang Shi,Qiuling Yue,Hui Wei,Xiaozhi Zhao

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a crucial neurotransmitter, the abnormal levels of which are closely associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders and male reproductive dysfunctions. In this study, a sulfur-doped Fe–N–C single-atom nanozyme (S@Fe-CNx) was successfully synthesized, and its oxidase-like activity and catalytic mechanism were systematically investigated. The experimental results indicate that sulfur doping significantly enhanced Fe-CNx oxygen activation capacity and catalytic kinetics by effectively optimizing the electronic structure of the FeNx active centers. Leveraging its superior oxidase-like activity, we developed a H2O2-free colorimetric sensing method for the highly sensitive and selective detection of 5-HT. The method exhibited a good linear relationship between absorbance and 5-HT concentration in the range of 40 ng/mL to 10 μg/mL, achieving a low limit of detection of 6.0 ng/mL. The successful application of this method for detecting 5-HT in human serum samples demonstrates its great potential for practical use. Furthermore, we established a smartphone-based colorimetric detection platform that quantified 5-HT by correlating its concentration with the grayscale intensity of standard solution images captured by a smartphone. This approach provides a facile strategy for developing point-of-care testing platforms.

A Facile Strategy to Boost the Active Sites of Fe–N–C Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Shuiyun Shen,Lin Li,Cehuang Fu,Guanghua Wei,Xiaojing Cheng,Jiewei Yin,Xiaohui Yan,Gang Wu,Junliang Zhang

A highly active Fe/N doped porous carbon electrocatalyst is constructed benefiting from the elaborate employment of benzimidazole (BIm) as nitrogen precursor. Compared with 2-methylimidazole (2-MIm), BIm can strongly capture Fe ions and strengthen the Fe–N bond, thus more Fe–N4 active sites form in the electrocatalyst with an enhanced catalytic activity towards oxygen reduction. The optimal sample exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.80 V vs RHE in acidic media.

Construction of schiff base-structured cobalt coordination polymers on Fe-N-C surfaces for high-efficiency ORR catalysts

Ruite Gu,Tingyu Yan,Zeyu Hao,Huanlu Tu,Shansheng Yu,Xiaoying Hu,Hongwei Tian

The preparation of highly efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts to address the complex oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in zinc-air batteries remains a significant challenge. Herein, a surface modification strategy is employed to uniformly encapsulate an Fe-N-C matrix with cobalt-coordinated conjugated organic polymers containing Schiff base structures, successfully yielding a highly active CB(cobalt-coordinated Schiff-base polymer)@Fe-N-C composite catalyst with coexisting cobalt coordination polymers and iron-nitrogen-carbon structures. In alkaline electrolytes, the CB@Fe-N-C catalyst exhibits outstanding catalytic activity (E 1/2  = 0.93 V) and stability, which are attributed to its highly conductive, structurally stable composite architecture with abundant active sites. In a zinc-air battery (ZAB), CB@Fe-N-C exhibits remarkable power density, surpassing the Pt/C benchmark. This work offers an effective synthetic strategy for preparing electrocatalysts with excellent ORR performance in zinc-air batteries.

Fe-N/C prepared by a two-step process as an efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for TC degradation

Zahid Iqbal,Jia-Yao Gao,Meng-Meng Wang,Wen-Fang Cai,Yun-Hai Wang

BACKGROUND The environmental persistence and resistance-promoting potential of tetracycline demands an efficient catalytic system capable of its complete oxidation. Herein, a bamboo derived Fe-N co-doped activated biochar (designated as Fe-N/C-A-2P) was engineered by two-step synthesis strategy to activate H 2 O 2 in a heterogeneous Fenton system for efficient tetracycline (TC) degradation. RESULTS The catalyst under optimized conditions (catalyst dosage = 0.5 g L −1 , pH = 3, H 2 O 2 concentration = 300 mg L −1 , temperature = 25 °C, and TC = 70 mg L −1 ) achieved about 90% TC removal within 60 min. It exhibited significantly enhanced reaction kinetics and sustained performance over multiple cycles with minimal iron leaching, indicating strong Fe retention and preserved stability. Radical quenching analysis confirmed a dual oxidative route, involving both radical (·OH and O 2 · − ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) mechanism for TC degradation. The catalyst displayed strong resistance to common inorganic anions and humic substances, highlighting its applicability beyond idealized conditions. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate that Fe-N/C-A-2P catalyst serves as an efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for removal of TC, providing a feasible approach for mitigating antibiotic contamination in aqueous media. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Rational fabrication of S-modified Fe–N–C nanosheet electrocatalysts for efficient and stable pH-universal oxygen reduction

Yaqian Dong,Zhi Fang,Deliu Ou,Qing Shi,Yu Ma,Weiyou Yang,Bin Tang,Qiao Liu

Constructing inexpensive, efficient, and stable pH-universal oxygen reduction electrocatalysts with controlled distribution of active species is of great importance for the exploration of green energy conversion devices. Herein, we demonstrated the rational preparation of S-modified Fe–N–C nanosheet catalysts with hierarchical porous architecture, large specific surface area (up to 1471 m 2 g −1 ) and controlled S doping (up to 12.3 at.%) by the co-pyrolysis of cysteine, FeCl 3 with Zn-mediated MgO template. Merited from rich and accessible active sites, the catalysts display outstanding oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in terms of very small E j3 (potential@3 mA cm −2 , 0.87 V in 0.1 M KOH, 0.66 V in 0.1 M PBS (pH7.4) and 0.64 V in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ) and overwhelming diffusion-limited current density (9.8, 6.1, 10.3 mA cm −2 in alkaline, neutral, acidic media, respectively), along with extremely respectable stability (∼90% activity retention for 53200, 26728, 43200 s in alkaline, neutral, acidic media, respectively), which underscore comparable or even better overall performance than commercial Pt/C and advanced pH-universal ORR catalysts ever reported. The as-assembled primary alkaline zinc–air battery delivers considerately large peak power density of 205 mW cm −2 and energy density up to 990.6 Wh kg Zn −1 at 10 mA cm −2 (115 mW cm −2 and 676.7 Wh kg Zn −1 for Pt/C-based battery), implying its highly promising application in practical energy conversion devices.

Iron Atom-Cluster Strategy Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Fe–N–C Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Qiu Wenhao,Han Qing,Yu Xiaogang,Xiang Zhonghua

Developing nonprecious metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (M–N–C) catalysts with high activity and stability is critical to their widespread use in fuel cells; however, these catalysts still face considerable challenges. Herein, a novel iron atom-cluster strategy for the synthesis of iron-based N–C catalyst comprising Fe nanoparticles (Fe NPs) surrounded by Fe-N x sites is developed for oxygen reduction reactions in an acidic fuel cell. Iron oxide NPs were incorporated into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-derived carbon materials and pyrolyzed at high temperatures using NaCl as a modifier to produce Fe NPs and Fe-N x composite active sites. The half-wave potential of the optimized Fe NP /FeNC-NaCl material was substantially improved to 0.81 V. Furthermore, even after 15,000 cycles, the half-wave potential of the catalyst remained essentially unchanged. As a cathode catalyst for fuel cells, it realized a high peak power density of 436 mW/cm 2 under a practical H 2 -air atmosphere. Therefore, this study presents a new approach for designing and synthesizing electrocatalytic materials with high catalytic activity and stability.

MOF-derived methanol-tolerant Fe–N–C catalyst for efficient oxygen reduction reaction in direct methanol fuel cell

Guo Shiquan,Wang Le,Chen Fei,Liu Wei,Li Congju

Pt-based electrocatalysts are recognized as the most effective materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, their widespread application is hindered by high cost, insufficient stability, and susceptibility to methanol and CO poisoning. Therefore, it is crucial to develop non-precious metal catalysts that are efficient, durable, and tolerant to fuel crossover. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of Fe–N–C catalysts derived from transition metal-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks via thermal treatment. In alkaline electrolyte, the obtained catalyst exhibited a half-wave potential of 0.79 V (vs. RHE) for the ORR, only 10 mV lower than that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, it demonstrated excellent stability with 86.7% current retention after 35,000 s, along with outstanding methanol tolerance. In addition, no significant change in current response was observed upon the addition of 1 M methanol during linear sweep voltammetry. Notably, a direct methanol fuel cell incorporating the Fe–N–C catalyst delivered a peak power density of 13.3 mW cm −2 at 65 ℃. This work highlights the critical role of Fe single atoms in enhancing both ORR activity and methanol tolerance, underscoring the significance in advancing the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications. MOF-derived Fe–N–C electrocatalyst via a dual ligand strategy for efficient oxygen reduction in acidic media

Yi Sheng,Hongmei Zheng,Jingting Hou,Wanying Zhang,Hong Chen,Luanjie Nie,Jing Zheng,Qingxue Lai

Fe–N–C materials as popular non-Pt group metal (non-PGM) electrocatalysts demonstrated huge potential for replacing Pt-based materials for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis in acidic media. Herein, a metal–organic-framework (MOF)-based dual ligand strategy is proposed to develop advanced Fe–N–C materials with a controllable density of Fe-Nx sites and electrochemically active surface area, attributed to the synergistic effect from secondary ligand manipulation and Zn evaporation during pyrolysis. As a result, the optimized catalyst exhibits an ORR half-wave potential of 0.747 V vs. RHE and long-term stability with only a 29 mV negative shift after 3000 potential cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. More far-reaching, this MOF-based dual ligand strategy opens a novel avenue to the precise fabrication of efficient catalysts.

Degradation of enrofloxacin by a novel Fe–N–C@ZnO material in freshwater and seawater: Performance and mechanism

Chuanhui Geng,Qingguo Chen,Zhenzhen Li,Mei Liu,Zhi Chen,Hengcong Tao,Qiao Yang,Baikang Zhu,Lijuan Feng

In this study, we investigated the doping of Fe–N–C with ZnO (Fe–N–C@ZnO) to enhance its performance in the reduction of biological toxicity and degradation of enrofloxacin (ENR) in seawater. The steady-state/transient fluorescence analysis and free radical quenching test indicated an extremely low electron–hole recombination rate and the generation of reactive oxygen species in Fe–N–C@ZnO, leading to an improvement in the energy efficiency. We compared the ENR degradation efficiencies of Fe–N–C@ZnO and ZnO using both freshwater and seawater. In freshwater, Fe–N–C@ZnO exhibited a slightly higher degradation efficiency (95.00%) than ZnO (90.30%). However, the performance of Fe–N–C@ZnO was significantly improved in seawater compared to that of ZnO. The ENR degradation efficiency of Fe–N–C@ZnO (58.87%) in seawater was 68.39% higher than that of ZnO (34.96%). Furthermore, the reaction rate constant for ENR degradation by Fe–N–C@ZnO in seawater (7.31 × 10 −3 min −1 ) was more than twice that of ZnO (3.58 × 10 −3 min −1 ). Response surface analysis showed that the optimal reaction conditions were a pH of 7.42, a photocatalyst amount of 1.26 g L −1 , and an initial ENR concentration of 6.56 mg L −1 . Fe–N–C@ZnO prepared at a hydrothermal temperature of 128 °C and heating temperature of 300 °C exhibited the optimal performance for the photocatalytic degradation of ENR. Based on liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, the degradation processes of ENR were proposed as three pathways: two piperazine routes and one quinolone route.

Development of Fe-N-C single-atom nanozymes assisted aptasensor for the detection of acetamiprid in water samples

Hong Yu,Chen Wang,Xinhe Xiong,Bitao Dai,Yang Wang,Zhijie Feng,Hao luo,Jiangxiong Zhu,Guoqing Shen,Yun Deng,Xueqing Geng,Danfeng Wang,Lumei Wang

Acetamiprid (Ace), extensively employed in agricultural production as a substitute for organophosphorus pesticides, poses a potential threat to the environment and human health due to excessive residues. Hence, the development of reliable and convenient techniques to determine Ace levels in the environment holds significant importance. Among various assay methods, nanomaterial-based aptamer-based biosensors (aptasensors) have emerged as efficient and promising tools. In this study, we successfully developed a novel aptasensor for monitoring Ace in the environmental water, utilizing advanced nanomaterials known as Fe-N-C single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes). Fe-N-C SAzymes exhibited excellent catalytic activity, high stability, and complete atom utilization. A facile dual-confinement route was employed for the synthesis of Fe-N-C SAzymes, and their performance as oxidase-like nanozymes was investigated. The synthesized Fe-N-C SAzymes presented distinct oxidase-like activity and demonstrated the capability to interact with a chromogenic indicator-TMB, serving as the signal transduction element in our assay. Furthermore, we found that thiol-modified aptamers could effectively dampen the oxidase-like activity of Fe-N-C SAzymes. Therefore, we successfully developed a Fe-N-C SAzymes assisted detection method for Ace, which exhibited high sensitivity (LOD = 16.9 nM) and selectivity. Overall, this work provides new insights into the design of multifunctional Fe-N-C SAzymes for environmental and biological applications.

Hemin-assisted synthesis of peroxidase-like Fe-N-C nanozymes for detection of ascorbic acid-generating bio-enzymes

Wendong Liu,Lin Chu,Chenghui Zhang,Pengjuan Ni,Yuanyuan Jiang,Bo Wang,Yizhong Lu,Chuanxia Chen

Revealing the relationship between composition and enzyme-like activities is essential for the rational designs of nanozymes and related assays with improved performances. Here, a series of Fe-N co-doped porous carbon (Fe-N-C) nanozymes containing different Fe contents have been successfully prepared by facilely pyrolyzing hemin trapped zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks (Hemin@ZIF-8). The special doping agent hemin will endow Fe-N-C with exceptionally high peroxidase-mimetic activities due to the hierarchically porous structure, high specific surface area, and high dispersed Fe-N x sites. Notably, the optimal Fe 55 -N-C nanozymes are used to detect bio-enzymes, by taking alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as a model, based on the inhibition of nanozymatic activity by ascorbic acid (AA). A linear activity range of 0.05–20 U/L is obtained with a low detection limit of 0.03 U/L, which is superior to the most published optical ALP assays. This work provides not only a new method for the design of the transition metal-N-C nanozyme with enhanced peroxidase-like activity but also a promising strategy for the detection of ascorbic acid-generating bio-enzymes with the assistance of specific substrates.
