Cu/Ti co-doping boosting P2-type Fe/Mn-based layered oxide cathodes for high-performance sodium storage

Mengmeng Yan,Kang Xu,Yu-Xin Chang,Zhi-Yu Xie,Sailong Xu

Environmentally friendly P2-type layered iron manganese oxides appear to be one of the most potential cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their practical application is hindered by the unfavorable phase transitions, dissolution of transition metals, and poor air stability. One effective strategy by either single-cation doping or high-cost Li involved co-doping is used to alleviate the problems. Here, low-cost Cu/Ti co-doping is introduced to boost P2-Na 0.7 Cu 0.2 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.5 Ti 0.1 O 2 as an air and electrochemical stable cathode material for SIBs. The resulting electrode delivers an initial capacity of 130 mAh g −1 at 0.1C within 2.0–4.2 V, a reversible discharge capacity of 61.0 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 5C and a capacity retention ratio exceeding 71.1% after 300 cycles. In particular, the co-doped crystal structure is well-maintained after 1 month of exposure to air, and even 3 days of soaking in water. Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated by the effectively mitigated P2–Z and the completely suppressed P2–P′2 phase transitions, the decreased volume variation proved by in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as the lowered transition-metal dissolution evidenced by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The low-lost Cu/Ti doping strategy could thus be effective for designing and preparing environmentally friendly and high-performance cathode materials for SIBs.

Improvement of the catalytic performance of Fe/Mn Co-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) via homojunction generation

Shilong Teng,Qiang Le,Zhaodong Nan

The rational design and fabrication of high-efficiency catalysts for Fenton-like reactions have become a central research direction. As a recently emerging catalyst of great interest, the catalytic performance of bimetal-doped g-C 3 N 4 (graphitic carbon nitride) is still limited by the electron transfer. In this study, Fe and Mn co-doped g-C 3 N 4 (designated as Fe/Mn-CCN) was prepared via a co-sintering method, which an internal electric field was formed via a homojunction generation from the introduction of cyano groups (-C N) in Fe/Mn-CCN, enhancing electron transfer and catalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) through the Fenton-like reaction. Simultaneously, it modulated the electronic density of metal active sites to enhance the adsorption capacity for TC and PMS. The rate constant of the reaction is 4.34 times higher than that of the pristine bimetallic catalyst (Fe/Mn-CN). The turnover number (TON) of Fe/Mn-CCN reaches as high as 32 × 10 −4 (g/L min) −1 , outperforming most reported graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 )-based catalytic systems with a significant enhancement in catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency retains 90% after continuous cyclic reactions for 12 h, demonstrating its excellent structural stability. This study provides a new perspective for the development of environmentally friendly materials used in pollutant degradation.

Fabricating Spinel-Type High-Entropy Oxides of (Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr)3O4 for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xiaofei Hao,Ran Wang,Xiumin Tan,Xiufeng Zhang,Xupo Liu,Zhaoyang Wu,Dongli Yuan

Fabricating efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial for water electrocatalysis. Herein, the spinel-type high-entropy oxides of (Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) 3 O 4 were synthesized through the high-temperature calcination approach. The influences of calcination temperatures on structures and electrochemical properties were investigated. The optimized catalyst of HEO-900 contains the hybrid structure of regular polyhedrons and irregular nanoparticles, which is beneficial for the exposure of electrochemically active sites. It was identified that the abundant high-valence metal species of Ni 3+ , Co 3+ , Fe 3+ , Mn 4+ , and Cr 3+ are formed during the OER process, which is generally regarded as the electrochemically active sites for OER. Because of the synergistic effect of multi-metal active sites, the optimized HEO-900 catalyst indicates excellent OER activity, which needs the overpotential of 366 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, HEO-900 reveals the prominent durability of running for 24 h at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 without clear delay. Therefore, this work supplies a promising route for preparing high-performance multi-metal OER electrocatalysts for water electrocatalysis application.

The Efficient Degradation of Oxytetracycline in Wastewater Using Fe/Mn-Modified Magnetic Oak Biochar: Pathways and Mechanistic Investigation

Yujie Zhou,Yuzhe Fu,Xiaoxue Niu,Bohan Wu,Xinghan Liu,Fu Hao,Zichuan Ma,Hao Cai,Yuheng Liu

Antibiotic resistance has been recognized as a global threat to human health. Therefore, it is urgent to develop effective strategies to address the contamination of water environments caused by antibiotics. In this study, Fe/Mn bimetallic-modified biochar (FMBC) was synthesized through a one-pot oxidation/reduction-hydrothermal co-precipitation method, demonstrating an exceptional photocatalytic-Fenton degradation performance for oxytetracycline (OTC). Characterization techniques including FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, and N2adsorption–desorption analysis confirmed that the Fe/Mn bimetals were successfully loaded onto the surface of biochar in the form of Fe3O4and MnFe2O4mixed crystals and exhibited favorable paramagnetic properties that facilitate magnetic recovery. A key innovation is the utilization of biochar’s inherent phenol/quinone structures as reactive sites and electron transfer mediators, which synergistically interact with the loaded bimetallic oxides to significantly enhance the generation of highly reactive ·OH radicals, thereby boosting catalytic activity. Even after five recycling cycles, the material exhibited minimal changes in degradation efficiency and bimetallic crystal structure, indicating its notable stability and reusability. The photocatalytic degradation experiment conducted in a Fenton-like reaction system demonstrates that, under the conditions of pH 4.0, a H2O2concentration of 5.16 mmol/L, a catalyst dosage of 0.20 g/L, and an OTC concentration of 100 mg/L, the optimal degradation efficiency of 98.3% can be achieved. Additionally, the pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant was determined to be 4.88 min−1. Furthermore, this study elucidated the detailed degradation mechanisms, pathways, and the influence of various ions, providing valuable theoretical insights and technical support for the degradation of antibiotics in real wastewater.

Enhanced removal of As(III)/(V) from water by simultaneously supported and stabilized Fe-Mn binary oxide nanohybrids

Zimo Lou,Zhen Cao,Jiang Xu,Xiaoxin Zhou,Jin Zhu,Xue Liu,Shams Ali Baig,Junliang Zhou,Xinhua Xu

In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and different stabilizers (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, starch, and carboxymethyl cellulose) were applied to simultaneously support and stabilize Fe-Mn binary oxide (FeMnO x ) nanohybrids, and enhanced removal of As(III)/(V) from water was achieved. TEM images shows that the aggregation of FeMnO x on RGO was effectively inhibited after the starch stabilization, meanwhile, the loading of FeMnO x on RGO was also increased. The adsorption capacity of As(III) and As(V) on starch-FeMnO x /RGO via Langmuir isotherm model was 78.74   mg   g −1 and 55.56   mg   g −1 , respectively, which was 1.99 and 2.39 times higher than bare FeMnO x . The adsorption kinetics was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. The effects of initial pH and coexisted anions were investigated. Over 90% of As(III) and As(V) could be removed by starch-FeMnO x /RGO during the five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The results revealed the potential of the RGO supported and starch stabilized FeMnO x as an efficient adsorbent for arsenic removal from water.

Constructing P2/O3 biphasic structure of Fe/Mn-based layered oxide cathode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Ping Zhang,Guohua Zhang,Yukun Liu,Yuxin Fan,Xinyue Shi,Yiming Dai,Shiwen Gong,Jingrong Hou,Jiwei Ma,Yunhui Huang,Renyuan Zhang

Fe/Mn-based layered oxide cathode is regarded as a competitive candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its high theoretical capacity, earth abundance and low cost. However, its poor cycling stability still remains a major bottleneck. Herein, P 2/O3 biphasic Na 0.67 Fe 0.425 Mn 0.425 Cu 0.15 O 2 layered oxide is successfully synthesized via a sol–gel method. It is observed that Cu substitution can facilitate the conversion of P 2 to O3 phase, and the P 2/O3 composite structure can be obtained with an appropriate amount of Cu. Meanwhile, in-situ XRD reveals that constructing P 2/O3 composite structure can realize the highly reversible phase transition process of P 2/O3– P 2/ P 3–OP4/OP2 and decrease the lattice mismatch during Na + insertion/extraction. Consequently, the biphasic P 2/O3-Na 0.67 Fe 0.425 Mn 0.425 Cu 0.15 O 2 electrode exhibits 87.1 % capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1C, while the single phase P 2-Na 0.67 Fe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 electrode has only 36.4 %. Therefore, the constructing biphasic structure is proved to be an effective strategy for designing high-performance Fe/Mn-based layered oxide cathodes.

Orbital Modulation and Coupled Redox Cycling in Fe–Mn Dual-Atom Catalysts for Efficient Fenton-like Water Purification

Jianing Xu,Yangyang Wang,Qianqian Chen,H. Zheng

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer ideal active sites for advanced oxidation processes, yet their practical applications are hindered by synthetic complexity, isolated centers, and limited redox and charge-transfer dynamics. Here, we report a scalable synthesis of a Fe–Mn dual-atom catalyst (Fe–Mn/N–C) featuring a symmetric Fe–Mn–N6 coordination structure. This unique configuration establishes a sustainable bimetallic redox cycle that enables efficient activation of peracetic acid (PAA) for pollutant degradation. The catalyst achieves nearly complete removal of sulfamethoxazole (99.9%) with an apparent rate constant of 0.3226 min–1—7.7 and 8.5 times higher than those of Fe/N–C and Mn/N–C counterparts, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Mn–N coordination promotes electronic delocalization and fine-tunes the electronic structure of adjacent Fe centers, leading to distinct PAA adsorption geometries on Mn and Fe sites that favor the selective formation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) species. The optimized Mn d-band center further lowers the energy barrier for 1O2 generation. Moreover, the Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox cycles are coupled through electron transfer between Fe and Mn centers, ensuring self-regeneration of active sites and sustained catalytic stability. The Fe–Mn/N–C catalyst exhibits outstanding activity across a wide pH range, strong tolerance to competing inorganic ions, excellent recyclability, and broad substrate applicability. Collectively, this work establishes a durable bimetallic redox-coupling strategy that leverages electronic structure modulation to realize synergistic oxidation and provides insights for the rational design of robust Fenton-like catalysts for complex environments.

Effect of Mischmetal Introduction on Hydrogen Storage Properties in Impure Hydrogen Gas of Ti-Fe-Mn-Co Alloys

Ruochen Shen,Chaohui Pu,Xiaoou Xu,Youpeng Xu,Zhilin Li,Zhu Wu

The research aims to study the effect of adding mischmetal (Mm) to the TiFe0.86Mn0.07Co0.07alloy on its hydrogen storage performance and cyclic stability. The results show that TiFe0.86Mn0.07Co0.07+ x% Mm (x = 0,4,6,8) alloys can be easily activated. The hydrogen absorption capacity of TiFe0.86Mn0.07Co0.07+ 4% Mm reaches 1.76 wt% (mass fraction) at 298 K. With the increase of Mm addition, the hydrogen storage capacity decreases slightly. Furthermore, after 40 absorption and desorption cycles in hydrogen containing 250 ppm O2, the alloy still has 36% of its initial hydrogen storage capacity, and the alloy can recover 93% of its hydrogen storage capacity through heat treatment. Keywords:TiFe hydrogen storage alloys;life test;impure hydrogen gas;cyclic stability

Elucidating the effect of Nb doping on the electrochemical performance of Fe–Mn based Li-rich cathode materials

Chen Hou,Yi-Ran Xing,Le-Le Yu,Yong-Heng Si,Han Lu,Yu-Juan Zhao

Fe–Mn based Li-rich cathode materials are regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials for their low cost and high energy density but possess drawbacks such as high oxygen release, low conductivity, and slow kinetics for lithium-ion transport. To address these issues, herein, we proposed a high-valance cations Nb 5+ doping strategy and synthesized a series of Li 1.26 [Fe 0.22 Mn 0.52 ] 1−x Nb 0.74x O 2 ( x  = 0, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) cathode materials. Using a combination of experimental approaches and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we found that the doped samples presented expanded interlayer spacing for Li-ion migration and better structural stability due to the large ionic radius of Nb 5+ and the strengthened Nb–O bond. Moreover, Nb doping could not only decrease the band gap and the density of states of the O 2p band but also contribute extra electrons to surrounding O atoms, thereby enhancing electronic conductivity and stabilizing lattice oxygen. Benefit from the underlying mechanisms mentioned above, the Nb 0.022 sample possessed a higher Coulombic efficiency (71.1 vs 65.0%) at 0.2 C, showing more stable cycling performance (90.4 vs 67.7 mAh g −1 ) at 0.5 C and rate capability. These favorable results can assist in the development of Fe–Mn based Li-rich cathode materials with excellent electrochemical properties.

Toward green nano adsorbents and catalysts: Highly active Fe/Mn nanoparticles for enhanced oxidation of oxytetracycline and levofloxacin

Jing Wu,Jiabing Li,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

The widespread use of antibiotics, such as oxytetracycline (OTC) and levofloxacin (LEV), has led to dangerous levels of environmental contamination. In this study, functionalized iron/manganese nanoparticles (Fe/Mn NPs), which act as both adsorbent and Fenton catalyst, were green-synthesized using a reducing agent derived from a tea extract. The resulting pre-sorption/Fenton-like oxidation system effectively removed both OTC and LEV from the aqueous solution with adsorption capacities of Fe/Mn NPs for OTC and LEV of 58.8 and 192.3 mg·g −1 , respectively. In addition, Fe/Mn NPs also showed high catalytic activity, oxidizing more than 99.9 % of both OTC and LEV, while sodium persulfate (PDS) removed only 26.6 and 29.0 % of OTC and LEV, respectively. Mechanisms of PDS activation typically involve either catalyst-initiated or mediated electron transfer reactions. Fe/Mn NPs through heterogeneous catalytic and metal leaching-induced homogeneous Fenton reactions, which generated various reactive oxygen species (ROS) including 1 O 2 , ·OH, SO 4 - · and ·O 2 – . Characterization of Fe/Mn NPs before and after reaction, and the identification of specific OTC and LEV degradation products by LC-MS, helped to elucidate a potential degradation pathway, as well as the removal mechanism. Finally, the practicality of using this system for wastewater treatment was demonstrated using real wastewater samples indicating that the system has great potential for simultaneously degrading both OTC and LEV in contaminated wastewater.

Effect of Al Content on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of the Sintered Fe–Mn–Al Porous Steel

Kai Wang,Hengtai Zhang,Jinrong Liang,Zhigang Xu,Shangyu Huang,Jian Peng,Chao Yang,Wenjun Li,Qiang Shen,Chuanbin Wang

Al content is of great importance for the evolution of the microstructure and compressive performance of the high-Mn and high-Al porous steels. Herein, Fe–Mn–Al porous steels with different Al contents are prepared via powder sintering at different temperatures. The results show that the main phases of the sintered samples at 640 °C are α-Fe, α-Mn, and Al, while a small amount of Fe 2 Al 5 and Al 8 Mn 5 exists in the samples with 15 and 20 wt% Al. At 1200 °C, the sintered sample with 5 wt% Al is composed of γ-Fe, while those with 15 and 20 wt% Al are mainly α-Fe. The length of Mn depletion region and porosity of the samples increase with the increase of Al content. The largest total and open porosity are observed in the 1200 °C-sintered sample with 20 wt% Al, which are 63.1 and 60.7 vol%, respectively. The compressive strength decreases sharply from 770 MPa for the sample with 5 wt% Al to 7.5 MPa with 15 wt% Al, after sintering at 1200 °C. Ductile fracture occurs in the sample with 5 wt% Al, while brittle fracture is the main fracture mode in those with 15 and 20 wt% Al.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by metal (Fe, Mn, Cu and Ni) doping ordered mesoporous Co3O4 for the degradation of enrofloxacin

Jing Deng,Chen Ya,Yongjian Ge,Yongqing Cheng,Yijing Chen,Mengyuan Xu,Hongyu Wang

Various transition metals (Fe, Mn, Cu and Ni) were doped into ordered mesoporous Co3O4 to synthesize Co3O4-composite spinels. Their formation was evidenced by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. It was found that Co3O4-composite spinels could efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove enrofloxacin (ENR) and the catalytic activity followed the order Co3O4–CuCo2O4 > Co3O4–CoMn2O4 > Co3O4–CoFe2O4 > Co3O4–NiCo2O4. Moreover, through the calculation of the specific apparent rate constant (ksapp), it can be proved that the Co and Cu ions had the best synergistic effect for PMS activation. The Co3O4-composite spinels presented a wide pH range for the activation of PMS, but strong acidic and alkaline conditions were detrimental to ENR removal. Higher reaction temperature could promote the PMS activation process. Sulfate radical was identified as the dominating reactive species in Co3O4-composite spinel/PMS systems through radical quenching experiments. Meanwhile, the probable mechanisms concerning Co3O4-composite spinel activated PMS were proposed.
