Prussian blue analogue assisted construction of hierarchical CoS2@(Fe,Ni)S2 heterostructures for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Chenyu Song,Jishuang Yang,Chinnadurai Ayappan,Shree Kesavan Kannan,Haitang Yang,Ruimin Xing,Hongxun Yang,Shanhu Liu

The large-scale application of water electrolysis technology is limited by the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that cause vast energy loss. Rational design and construction of hierarchical heterostructures are helpful for developing efficient OER electrocatalysts due to their interesting morphological features and electrochemical properties. Herein, we prepared hierarchical CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 heterostructures on carbon fiber paper (CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 /CFP) with particle-on-wire morphology using prussian blue analogue as template and precursor. The unique hierarchical heterostructure maximizes accessible active sites and the synergistic effect between different components significantly improves electrocatalytic activity. Impressively, CoS 2 @(Fe,Ni)S 2 /CFP electrocatalyst requires a small overpotential of 237 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm −2 with a low Tafel slope of 54 mV dec −1 and the corresponding voltage has no obvious change after 60 h stability test under a constant current density of 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient and stable non-noble metal-based OER electrocatalysts.

Facile synthesis of Fe/Ni bimetallic oxide solid-solution nanoparticles with superior electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction

Wang Lingxiao,Geng Jing,Wang Wenhai,Yuan Chao,Kuai Long,Geng Baoyou

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important half-reaction of the electrochemical water-splitting reaction. Amorphous Fe/Ni composite oxides have high activity. In this work, we modified the aerosol spray-assisted approach and obtained amorphous Fe-Ni-O x solid-solution nanoparticles (Fe-Ni-O x -NPs) approximately 20 nm in size by choosing iron/nickel acetylacetonates as raw materials instead of inorganic salts. The small-sized Fe-Ni-O x -NPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, an investigation of electrochemical OER performance suggests that the small-sized Fe-Ni-O x -NPs have higher activity than the large-sized Fe-Ni-O x -MPs. A small overpotential of 0.315 V was demanded to obtain a working current density of 50 mA/cm 2 , and the Tafel slope was as low as 38 mV/dec.

Enhancing the activity and stability of RuO2-based catalyst via nano-confinement effect for O2 evolution reaction in acid electrolyte

Shukai Liu,Huang Tan,Gaole Dai,Shiyun Xiong,Yu Zhao,Benxia Li

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as a pivotal process in electrochemical water splitting, directly determines energy conversion efficiency. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts have gained considerable attention in recent years due to their decent intrinsic activity in acidic media. Previous studies have demonstrated that while Ru exhibits superior OER activity compared to RuO2 in acidic environments, its operational stability remains markedly inferior. This performance dichotomy, coupled with the persistent challenges of active species dissolution and catalyst particle aggregation during prolonged operation, significantly hinders their practical implementation in electrochemical systems. To address these challenges, this study develops a carbon nanotube (CNT)/Fe-Ni@RuO2@PANI-350 composite catalyst composed of RuO2 nanoparticles supported on bimetallic Fe-Ni modified CNTs (CNT/Fe-Ni) and encapsulated with polyaniline (PANI). This catalyst utilizes the anchoring effect of bimetallic Fe-Ni sites and the spatial confinement effect of PANI coating layer, effectively inhibiting the dissolution and agglomeration of RuO2 during both high-temperature processing and electrochemical operation, thereby significantly enhancing electrochemical stability. The anchoring strength of RuO2 nanoparticles on CNT/Fe-Ni support via the nano-confinement effect, as well as the microscopic mechanisms underlying the performance enhancement, are revealed by density functional theory calculations and experimental characterizations. The composite catalyst demonstrates fascinating OER performance in 0.5 M H2SO4, exhibiting a low Tafel slope of 39.1 mV dec-1 as well as low overpotentials of 188 and 225 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively. Remarkably, the composite catalyst demonstrates significantly enhanced stability, exhibiting only ~30 mV overpotential increase during 150 h continuous operation at 10 mA cm-2. This study highlights a simple yet effective nano-confinement strategy to address the challenges of Ru-based catalysts, and provides a practical paradigm for designing and preparing highly efficient OER electrocatalysts with enhanced stability.

Defect-Rich, Rose-Shaped Fe2Ni1-Metal–Organic Framework Nanoarrays for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Qianqian Wang,Xiaoyan Ma,Pengcheng Ma,Ran Bi,Senyang Song

This article reports an important improvement of the design of high-efficiency and economical catalysts to accelerate the four-electron-proton-coupled oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is a critical half-reaction in renewable electrolytic water systems. Herein, the Fe2Ni1-MOF nanoarrays with various morphologies were in situ-grown on the surface of nickel foam (NF) based on the acetic acid-assisted strategy for oxygen evolution reaction. Under the control of a regulator, the optimized 3A-TDC-MOF nanosheets in OER exhibit superior catalytic activity with an overpotential of 211 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 40.3 mV dec–1, attributing to the rose-shaped nanoarray, abundant defect sites, and Fe-Ni bimetallic synergistic effect. Further analysis shows that the superior electrocatalytic performance depends on the formation of active intermediate metal-oxyhydroxide after the ligand chain 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic is replaced partially by OH–. The proposed strategy provides further insights into the design of desirable MOF-based electrocatalytic materials.

Ultrathin MCo2O4(M = Fe, Ni, Cu and Cr) Nanosheets/Carbon heterostructures for highly efficient thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Jiayuan Zhang,Zhenlong Liu,Yu Liu,Liping Jiang,Caixia Ma,Lei Yang,Zunyuan Xie,Jizhen Li,Guofang Zhang

Transition metal oxides exhibit inherent catalytic activity for ammonium perchlorate (AP) decomposition; however, their performance is limited by the scarcity of accessible active sites and low conductivity. Therefore, morphology-directed structural design and interfacial engineering are highly desirable. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) MCo 2 O 4 nanosheets ( M = Fe, Ni, Cu, and Cr) were synthesized via a thermal expansion method and subsequently combined with three types of carbon materials C x (C x = rGO, CNTs, and g-C 3 N 4 ) to construct 2D MCo 2 O 4 /C x composites. Structural analyses demonstrate that the intimate interfacial coupling between 2D MCo 2 O 4 nanosheets and carbon materials effectively suppresses restacking and establishes a continuous conductive network. More importantly, strong interfacial coupling enables effective electronic modulation at the heterojunction, resulting in an optimized charge distribution and enhanced interfacial electron transfer. Among all catalysts, 5 wt. % FeCo 2 O 4 /rGO-1 demonstrates the most notable catalytic activity for AP decomposition, reducing its peak temperature in the high-temperature decomposition stage by 137.4 °C and increasing its heat release by 736.33 J·g⁻ 1 . Electrochemical tests confirm that accelerated interfacial charge transfer enhances AP pyrolysis. Kinetic modelling, TG-FTIR-MS, and DFT calculations indicate that the 2D-2D heterointerface boosts the adsorption of the AP intermediate NH 3 and promotes its conversion into higher-valence NO 2 , while also accelerating electron transport and lowering the decomposition barrier. The synergistic effect between interfacial electron transport and the heterojunction promotes the rapid AP degradation. Based on these findings, a plausible catalytic mechanism for AP decomposition is proposed.

Screening for the action mechanisms of Fe and Ni in the reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe/Ni nanoparticles

Xia Ruan,Hong Liu,Xiaoyong Ning,Dongye Zhao,Xianyuan Fan

Zero-valent iron (ZVI), Fe 2+ and H 2 are possible electron donors in the reduction of Cr(VI) by nanoscale ZVI (n-ZVI). However, it is often ambiguous about the roles of these electron donors in the reductive removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater and wastewater. This study investigated the action mechanisms of Fe and Ni in Cr(VI) reduction by Fe/Ni nanoparticles (n-Fe/Ni). Among the three possible reduction mechanisms of ZVI, direct electron transfer from ZVI and its corrosion product, Fe 2+ , were confirmed to be responsible for the reduction removal of Cr(VI). H 2 , another product of ZVI corrosion, was found incapable of reducing Cr(VI). In addition, the secondary metal Ni in n-Fe/Ni was found to facilitate the direct electron transfer from ZVI owing to its ability to inhibit the passivation of ZVI and to enhance the production of Fe 2+ due to the formation of Fe Ni galvanic cells . The results of characterizations on n-Fe/Ni before and after the reaction with Cr(VI) demonstrated that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), which existed as FeCr 2 O 4 precipitates on the surface of n-Fe/Ni, resulting in effective sequestration of Cr(VI). These findings are important for understanding the main mechanisms of bimetallic nanoparticles or nanomaterials for reductive immobilization of Cr(VI), and may guide further ZVI-based technology development for remediation of contaminated water or soil with redox-active contaminants.

Effect of Pd doping in (Fe/Ni)/CeO2 catalyst for the reaction path in CO2 oxidative ethane dehydrogenation/reforming

Xiuquan Li,Zhongqing Yang,Li Zhang,Ziqiang He,Ruiming Fang,Ziqi Wang,Yunfei Yan,Jingyu Ran

The catalytic reaction of C 2 H 6 with CO 2 provides an opportunity to use shale gas and the greenhouse gas as source materials to produce ethylene through oxidative dehydrogenation or produce syngas through dry reforming . In this work, the reaction characteristics of ethane with CO 2 on Fe/Co/Ni/Cu monometallic catalysts and Pd-doped bimetallic catalysts were studied through activity test, kinetic analysis , catalyst characterization and DFT calculation. It is found that Pd–Fe 6 /CeO 2 has a high and stable C 2 H 4 selectivity of 80.4%, which is suitable for oxidative dehydrogenation reaction, while Ni 6 /CeO 2 has a large ethane/CO 2 conversion and a high CO selectivity of 96.5%, which is suitable for dry reforming reaction. For Fe-based catalyst, the doping of Pd form double active component structure. It only reduces the energy barrier of ethylene formation and CO 2 direct activation to provide O∗, but also increases the energy barrier of ethylene deep dehydrogenation, thus increasing the conversion of reactants and selectivity of C 2 H 4 . For Ni-based catalysts, the doping of Pd forms the alloy structure, which reduces the energy barrier of O∗-assisted dehydrogenation reaction and increases the conversion of reactants, but increases the energy barrier of C–C bond cleavage and CO 2 activation reaction, which reduces the selectivity of reforming to syngas.

Metal Doping Effect of the M–Co2P/Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) Hydrogen Evolution Hybrid Catalysts

Yuan Pan,Yunqi Liu,Yan Lin,Chenguang Liu

The enhancement of catalytic performance of cobalt phosphide-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still challenging. In this work, the doping effect of some transition metal (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) on the electrocatalytic performance of the M–Co2P/NCNTs (NCNTs, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes) hybrid catalysts for the HER was studied systematically. The M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts were synthesized via a simple in situ thermal decomposition process. A series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 sorption were used to characterize the as-synthesized M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts. Electrochemical measurements showed the catalytic performance according to the following order of Fe–Co2P/NCNTs > Ni–Co2P/NCNTs > Cu–Co2P/NCNTs, which can be ascribed to the difference of structure, morphology, and electronic property after doping. The doping of Fe atoms promote the growth of the [111] crystal plane, resulting in a large specific area and exposing more catalytic active sites. Meanwhile, the Feδ+ has the highest positive charge among all the M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts after doping. All these changes can be used to contribute the highest electrocatalytic activity of the Fe–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalyst for HER. Furthermore, an optimal HER electrocatalytic activity was obtained by adjusting the doping ratio of Fe atoms. Our current research indicates that the doping of metal is also an important strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity for the HER.

Composite of Double Transition Metals (Fe, Ni) and N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as Cathode Catalysts for Zinc–Air Batteries

Junjie Qiao,Yuyang Han,Lanyang Feng,Yanting Li,Jianning Ding,Fei Xu,Bencai Lin

This paper reports the low-cost fabrication of high-performance double transition metals (Fe, Ni) and N-doped carbon nanotubes (FexNiy-N-CNT) to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in zinc–air batteries (ZABs). The target active sites and appropriate carbon substrates of the designed catalysts facilitated charge transfer kinetics. The carbon nanotube (CNT)-based catalysts underwent electrochemical testing using the rotating ring–disk electrode method, and the results revealed that the Fe2Ni1-N-CNT catalyst exhibited both an exceptional ORR performance (E1/2 = 0.86 V) and excellent stability. Furthermore, the ZABs with the Fe2Ni1-N-CNT catalyst exhibited a high power density (169.5 mW cm–2) and an open-circuit voltage (1.46 V). These findings can provide insights into the development of efficient and sustainable CNT-based cathode catalysts for ZABs.

In situ exsolved Fe-Ni nanoparticles on Pr0.8La0.2FexNi1-xO3-δ perovskite as high-performance anode for solid oxide fuel cells

Meijing Lu,Junling Meng,Jingxuan Cao,Xiaotong Wang,Xiaoxue Han,Siqi Li,Jian Ren,Na Xu

Nanoarchitectures in catalyst design have garnered significant attention due to their ability to enhance performance, durability, and resistance against undesirable side reactions. In this work, an in situ exsolution method was employed to decorate the electrode surface with nanoparticles, aiming to enhance the electrochemical performance and long-term stability of the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) anode. Initially, the Pr 0.8 La 0.2 Fe x Ni 1- x O 3- δ (PLFN, x  = 0.4, 0.5) powders were synthesized and subsequently processed by in situ hydrogen reduction. Following the exsolution, characterization by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirmed the formation of Fe-Ni alloy and LaFeO 3 particles. Correlation with electrochemical measurements revealed that the enhanced anode performance is primarily due to the surface Fe-Ni alloy nanoparticles. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis verified the metallic state of the exsolved Fe and Ni species after reduction. Finally, the PLFN material was applied as an anode in an electrolyte-supported single cell, and Pr 0.8 La 0.2 Fe 0.4 Ni 0.6 O 3- δ (PLF 0.4 N 0.6 ) demonstrated superior output performance under different reduction temperatures. Meanwhile, the peak power densities with PLF 0.4 N 0.6 anode after in situ exsolution reached 1.04, 0.64, and 0.56 W cm −2 at 850 °C when using H 2 , NH 3 , and CH 4 as fuels, respectively, exhibiting remarkable fuel flexibility. Moreover, the single cell with PLF 0.4 N 0.6 as the anode exhibited excellent operational stability, showing a performance degradation rate of only 0.01% per hour over a 100-hour test. These results offer valuable insights into the rational design of next-generation SOFCs anodes possessing exceptional activity and durability.

Nano Fe and Mg2Ni derived from TMA-TM (TM = Fe, Ni) MOFs as synergetic catalysts for hydrogen storage in MgH2

Zhewen Ma,Qiuyu Zhang,Wen Zhu,Darvaish Khan,Chuanzhu Hu,Tianping Huang,Wenjiang Ding,Jianxin Zou

TMA-TM (TM = Fe, Ni) MOFs were synthesized successfully by a facile method. A MgH2-TM MOF (TM = Fe, Ni) composite was obtained via ball milling and the corresponding hydrogen storage performance was investigated. Particularly, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was performed to in situ characterize the dehydrogenation behavior of the MgH2-TM MOF composite. The results reveal that nano α-Fe and Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni derived from the TMA-TM MOFs display a synergetic improving effect on the de/hydrogenation of MgH2. During the hydrogen desorption process, Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni works as a “hydrogen pump” to quickly deliver hydrogen and facilitates hydrogen diffusion. Meanwhile, α-Fe accelerates the nucleation and growth of Mg by reducing the nucleation energy of Mg from MgH2. The hydriding activation energy of the MgH2-TM MOF declines to 45.3 kJ mol−1 H2. Meanwhile, the peak dehydriding temperature of the MgH2-TM MOF is 530.9 K, which is much lower compared with the MgH2–Fe MOF composite (541.7 K) and as-milled MgH2 (685.2 K). Therefore, nano Mg2Ni and α-Fe derived from the TMA-TM MOFs can remarkably improve the hydrogen storage properties of the MgH2/Mg system due to their synergetic catalytic effects.

Fe-Ni Bimetallic Modified HZSM-5 for Efficient Preparation of Monocyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons via Co-Pyrolysis of PET and LDPE

Haijian Yang,Changsen Zhang,Lianfeng Shang,Hanfang Feng,Na Xiao

Plastic waste has become a serious global issue. Thermal treatment of waste PET faces critical drawbacks including severe reactor clogging and low-value oxygen-rich bio-oil, restricting large-scale chemical recycling. Co-pyrolysis with hydrogen-rich low-density polyethylene (LDPE) over modified zeolite provides a viable route to overcome these barriers. In this study, reaction parameters including temperature, plastic/catalyst ratio and PET/LDPE ratio were optimized, and Fe-Ni bimetallic modified HZSM-5 was fabricated via impregnation to boost monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) production. LDPE served as a hydrogen donor to facilitate PET deoxygenation via synergistic effects. At 550 °C with a plastic/catalyst ratio of 1:4 and PET/LDPE ratio of 2:3, the liquid yield hit 80.2%, and all detectable organic compounds in the liquid phase identified by GC–MS were aromatic hydrocarbons. Among all prepared mono- and bimetallic zeolites, 3Fe7Ni/HZ delivered optimal MAHs selectivity at 80.5%. This 20% promotion over unmodified HZSM-5 stems from balanced metal dispersion and tuned acid sites unique to Fe–Ni co-loading. This work offers a feasible strategy for converting waste plastics into high-value aromatics and further trials with varied metal contents will be needed to extend industrial applicability.
