Sustainable oxygen evolution catalysis: Water-based fabrication of FeNi-MIL-100 on recycled stainless steel substrates

Li Zhong,Ni Wang,Liangkui Sun,Xingchen Xie,Lixiang He,Mingliang Xiang,Wencheng Hu

The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is essential in new technologies such as water electrolysis and metal-air batteries. However, it often exhibits suboptimal efficiency and delayed kinetics. This study presents a novel and new design for the fabrication of homogeneous FeNiBTC/SSM (SSM = stainless steel material) with tunable crystalline properties by a self-sacrificial and in situ synthesis from a recycled stainless steel substrate. The modified stainless steel template enhances the material’s properties compared to the original mesh substrate and its structure can be attributed to the typical MIL-100 (Material of Institute Lavoisier) structure, which is a hierarchically structured, highly chemically stable material formed by FeO6 octahedral clusters around a single shared oxygen anion. The as-synthesized FeNiBTC/SSM4 catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER, as indicated by its small Tafel slope (74.5 mV dec −1 ), low overpotential (η 10 223.7 mV), and high current retention (95.4 %) after a stability test lasting 45 h. The study demonstrates the development of water-based and self-sustaining MOF electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in a simple process, along with a novel method for reusing renewable resources.

Novel B-doped FeNi/C alloy nanofibers electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen evolution reaction from water splitting

Hua Ma,Xiuwen Wu,Xiuli Fu,Zhijian Peng

Industrial-scale water splitting processes will require economical and efficient electrocatalyst materials. Many oxygen evolution electrocatalysts prepared with non-precious metals have been reported. However, transition metal-based nanomaterials experience unavoidable aggregation and low stability in corrosion environments, which substantially reduces their catalytic performance. Herein, we successfully used a simple electrospinning technique followed by carbonation to synthesize a porous B-doped carbon fiber electrocatalyst with embedded B-doped FeNi alloy nanoparticles . To prepare the optimal catalyst sample, 1.05 g PAN, 5.0 mmol H 3 BO 3 , 2.5 mmol Fe(NO 3 ) 3 , and 2.5 mmol Ni(NO 3 ) 2 were used as precursors. The electrospun pristine fibers were annealed for 1 h at 800  ° C in argon. Its overpotential for oxygen evolution at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 was only 231 mV, and a 60.99 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope was achieved. At this current density, this catalyst exhibits good performance for over 24 h or for more than 1000 CV cycles. This is due to the doping of non-metallic B atoms into the alloy nanoparticles , as well as the support and protection on them by carbon nanofibers . Insight This research provides a more thorough understanding of the preparation and practical application of low-cost and high-efficiency transitional metal alloy based water splitting catalysts.

Based on Fe and Ni prepared organic colloidal materials as efficient oxide nanozymes for chemiluminescence detection of GSH and Hg(II) ions

Xiluan Yan,Shiyun Cheng,Yipi Xiao,Shuangbin Wu,Hongyi Mu,Zhiying Shi,Liang Guo,Fanrong Ai,Xiangjuan Zheng

Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are a type of metal-organic colloid material with a large specific surface area, loose porous structure, and open metal active sites. In this work, FeNi-MOGs were synthesized by the simple one-step static method, using Fe(III) and Ni(II) as the central metal ions and terephthalic acid as the organic ligand. The prepared FeNi-MOGs could effectively catalyze the chemiluminescence of luminol without the involvement of H 2 O 2 , which exhibited good catalytic activity. Then, the multifunctional detected platform was constructed for the detection of GSH and Hg 2+ , based on the antioxidant capacity of GSH, and the strong affinity between mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) and GSH which inactivated the antioxidant capacity of GSH. The experimental limits of detection (LOD) for GSH and Hg 2+ were 76 nM and 210 nM, and the detection ranges were 2–100 μM and 8–4000 μM, respectively. The as-proposed sensor had good performance in both detection limit and detection range of GSH and Hg 2+ , which fully met the needs of daily life. Surprisingly, the sensor had low detection limits and an extremely wide detection range for Hg 2+ , spanning five orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the detection of mercury ions in actual lake water and GSH in human serum showed good results, with recovery rates ranging from 90.10 % to 105.37 %, which proved that the method was accurate and reliable. The as-proposed sensor had great potential as the platform for GSH and Hg 2+ detection applications.

NiCo Nanolayered Double Hydroxides on Fe/Ni Metal–Organic Frameworks for Oxygen Evolution

Kang Ji,Junpeng Wang,Ping Yang

Modulation of oxygen intermediates in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) tends to be an effective method for intensifying OER activity. In this paper, NiCo nanolayered double hydroxide (NC-LDH)-decorated FeNi bimetallic metal–organic framework (FN-MIL) heterostructures were constructed for enhanced OER performance. Various characteristics including Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning and transmission electron microscopy images, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra help to explore the composition and microstructure. The band gap of samples was discussed using Mott–Schottky curves and Tauc plots to analyze the interfacial electron transfer driven by the energy level difference, resulting in the formation of electron-rich and electron-deficient regions at the interface and realizing the directed modulation of oxygen intermediates. The as-prepared composite catalyst revealed excellent OER performance, long-term stability, a high faradic efficiency of 97.8%, and a low potential of 244 mV at 10 mA cm–2 (without iR-compensation). Interestingly, the catalyst maintained high OER activity in seawater containing 1 M KOH due to its favorable resistance to chloride ions, suggesting an appealing prospect in practical application.

Maximizing Available Active Hydrogen on FeNi Substitutional Solid-Solution Alloy to Boost Electrosynthesis of Ammonia from Nitrate

Xing Sun,Yanzheng He,Mengfan Wang,Qiyang Cheng,Yunfei Huan,Sisi Liu,Jie Liu,Tao Qian,Chenglin Yan,Jianmei Lu

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) stands out as a promising route for sustainable ammonia synthesis, in which active hydrogen (*H) plays a crucial role in both the deoxygenation and hydrogenation steps. However, the regulation of surface *H is still overlooked, and without intervention, the competing hydrogen evolution reaction is kinetically more favored over the NO3RR, leaving the current system as far from satisfactory. Herein, based on reverse utilization of the Sabatier principle, a series of FexNiy substitutional solid-solution alloys (SSAs) are synthesized to manipulate *H behavior for enhanced NO3RR. Upon precise optimization of the alloy composition, the d-band center of HER-active Ni shifts toward the Fermi level, endowing the catalyst with strong interaction to *H and greatly prolonging its lifetime, which enables abundant supply to facilitate the NO3RR. As expected, a maximum NH3 yield rate of 31.46 mmol h–1 mg–1 is delivered over the optimized Fe3Ni1–SSA, which is considerably higher than most of the extensively reported works. Several in situ characterizations are combined to gain in-depth insight. Especially, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in internal reflection mode directly observes *H enrichment on the catalyst surface, while the accompanied facilitation of the NO3RR process is verified by external reflection mode.

Fabrication of FeNi@PDA Nanozyme-Driven Dual-Mode Platform for Visual and On-Site Monitoring of Ampicillin

Weipeng Teng,Guizhu Wu,Hongwu Wu,Zhaoying Liu,Haining Chen,Zhen Zhang,Ming Li

The widespread accumulation of ampicillin (AMP) poses significant ecological and health risks, demanding rapid and portable monitoring tools. Herein, a Fe-Ni bimetallic-doped polydopamine (FeNi@PDA) nanozyme with exceptional peroxidase-like activity was synthesized for the visual and on-site monitoring of AMP. Optimized through bimetallic electronic coupling, FeNi@PDA exhibited enhanced catalytic efficiency (KM= 0.051 mmol/L for H2O2and 0.049 mmol/L for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine) and generated1O2and ·O2−via H2O2activation. Leveraging the competitive consumption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by electron-rich AMP, a colorimetry detection mode was developed where AMP concentration inversely correlated with oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB) formation. This strategy achieved a good linear relationship of between 0.05 to 100 μg/mL, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.38 ng/mL. Furthermore, a smartphone-integrated paper-based detection mode was fabricated by immobilizing FeNi@PDA on filter paper. The color gradient of test papers, analyzed via smartphone imaging, enabled on-site AMP quantification with a LOD of 340 ng/mL. This work not only developed a novel Fe-Ni bimetallic nanozyme with enhanced peroxidase-like activity and established a competitive ROS-consumption sensing mechanism but also pioneered a dual-mode detection platform for low-cost, user-friendly ampicillin monitoring in environmental samples.

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofiber decorated with FeNi alloy for dendrite-free high-performance lithium metal anode

Zhongxun Yu,Jianwei Zhou,Xujin Lv,Chenxi Li,Xinhua Liu,Shichun Yang,Yong Liu

Lithium metal has garnered increasing attention, and is considered to be the most promising anode material for the next-generation rechargeable batteries with higher energy density such as lithium-sulfur, lithium-air and solid-state batteries. However, several serious challenges limit the commercial application of lithium metal batteries , including uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth, inherent volume expansion, and low Coulombic efficiency. Here, a nitrogen-doped porous nanofiber scaffold decorated with FeNi alloy nanoparticles with high lithophilicity is proposed by the electrospinning technique. The porous structure and the doping of FeNi alloy can expose more lithium nucleation active sites, and effectively reduce the nucleation overpotential of lithium metal to guide the uniform deposition of lithium. The porous structure formed by the sublimation of polymethyl methacrylate can effectively relieve the volume expansion and structural stress during the cycling process. As a result, excellent cycle stability and outstanding rate performance are observed in the tests of symmetric cells, highlighting the feasibility of the designed bimetallic doped carbon fiber scaffold for developing high-performance lithium metal anodes . The present work provides new strategies to solve the formation of lithium dendrites and brings new inspiration for the design and construction of high-efficiency lithium anodes and other secondary batteries anodes.

Regulation engineering of lignin-derived N-doped carbon-supported FeNi alloy particles towards efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Jianglin Liu,Linjun Wu,Dalang Chen,Quanzhou Xu,Liheng Chen,Xuliang Lin,Yanlin Qin

The electrocatalytic hydrogen production technology using green energy can reduce the dependence on traditional fossil fuels and the net emission of carbon dioxide. However, the high overpotential and low efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode limit the overall water splitting. Here, carboxylic acid ligands with coordination function were designed and synthesized by modifying the surface functional groups of lignin. Bimetallic functionally-doped lignin-derived carbon materials (Fe 4 Ni 4 @NC) were synthesized by continuous ion layer adsorption and pyrolysis process using Fe and Ni transition metals as source and template. The catalyst requires only 214 mV of overpotential to produce 10 mA·cm −2 , which has much faster catalytic kinetics. Theoretical calculation shows that the energy barrier of rate-determining step in OER is reduced by appropriate feed ratio and nano-size. The facile strategy opens up an economical and efficient solution for designing OER electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and excellent stability.

Nanoarchitectonics for a long-life and robust Na-ion battery at low temperature with Prussian blue cathode and low-concentration electrolyte

Xiaomei Zhang,Zheng Xu,Jian Xie,Yunhao Lu,Shuangyu Liu,Xiongwen Xu,Jian Tu,Bo Xu,Xinbing Zhao

Na-ion batteries are considered as promising battery systems for large-scale energy storage. Although Na-ion batteries exhibit enhanced low-temperature cycling performance compared with lithium-ion batteries, there is still a great challenge to overcome for practical low-temperature applications. In this work, we propose a low-performance Na-ion battery composed of FeNi co-doped Mn-based Prussian cathode (FeNi-MnHCF) and a low-concentration electrolyte (0.5 mol L −1 ) containing a small amount of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acetate (ETFA, 1 wt%). The introduction of ETFA could decrease the viscosity , increase ionic conductivity and change the solvation structure of the electrolyte at low temperature. ETFA could also participate in constructing a uniform, stable, and Na-ion conductive CEI layer, enabling rapid Na-ion transport and effective protection of FeNi-MnHCF. The cells with the ETFA-contained electrolyte and FeNi-MnHCF cathode exhibit excellent rate capability and long cycle life at low temperature. When being cycled at −20 °C, the cell with ETFA could retain 92.1 % of the capacity after 1120 cycles at 1 C. The cell could also show stable cycling after overcharge to 4.8  V or overdischarge to 1.2 V at −20 °C. This work sheds light on the design of long-life and robust Na-ion batteries for sustainable energy storage at low temperature.

Artificial intelligence-assisted design of FeNi-LDH-NiTe needle-like array for high current density oxygen evolution reaction

Jieyu Zhang,Qianwei Chen,Sichen Wang,Xingyu Bai,Zhongchuang Liu,Jiangxiong Deng,Dongyu Wang,Yanmou Shao,Shu-Juan Bao

Active, stable, and low-cost alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is essential for large-scale hydrogen (H 2 ) production via electrochemical water splitting. Traditional catalyst design often relies on experience-driven, trial-and-error approaches, limits exploration efficiency. To overcome this, we present an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted high-throughput framework combining large language models (LLMs)-based literature mining and Python-driven simulations. LLMs identifies FeNi-layered double hydroxide (FeNi-LDH) has excellent activity for OER while Python-based simulations propose a needle-like facilitate bubble detachment. In our experimental, the as-prepared FeNi-LDH exhibits good OER activity (237 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ). After growing FeNi-LDH on NiTe array, the needle-like FeNi-LDH-NiTe not only delivers enhanced activity (198 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), but also exhibits faster bubble generation and migration, which allow it to stably work at high current density (1 A cm −2 ). The successful AI-guided catalyst design proposes a clear strategy to decouple kinetic and non-kinetic optimization for exploring excellent electrocatalyst.

One-Step Synthesis of 2D Nanosheet-Constructed FeNi-S@NF Nanoflowers for the Electrocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Qitao Wu,Zhenzhen Lin,Yuzhi Zou,Wenxin Huang,Yanshi Li,Xiaosen Huang,Jiankai Wang,Javokhir Toshov,Sardor Donaev,Hengcong Tao,Shunli Li

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to prepare high-value-added chemicals is an effective solution for a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. We report a novel one-step hydrothermal sulfurization strategy to construct hierarchical FeNi-S@NF nanoflower architectures comprising interconnected 2D nanosheets. This catalyst design synergistically integrates high conductivity (i.e., nickel foam (NF) substrate), abundant active sites (i.e., 2D nanosheet), and optimized electronic structure (i.e., sulfur doping), achieving exceptional electrocatalytic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) conversion. By optimizing the classical two-step hydrothermal sulfidation approach through precise control of metal ratios and sulfidation duration, we significantly enhanced the catalytic performance for the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR). Sulfur doping was found to substantially improve the catalyst’s adsorption capability for HMFOR intermediates, thereby enhancing both activity and selectivity toward FDCA production. The optimized FeNi-S@NF nanoflower catalyst demonstrated superior electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH + 50 mM HMF, achieving 98.41% conversion rate, 92.08% FDCA yield, and 89.19% Faradaic efficiency at an applied potential of 1.45 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), surpassing most reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts. This research work provides a new strategy for the rapid and low-cost synthesis of two-dimensional sulfide nanoelectrocatalysts for the efficient electrooxidation process of biomass derivatives.

Research on the Mechanism of Efficient and Sustainable Degradation of Phenolic Wastewater by 3D-printed FeNi Porous Framework

Li Ma,Kun Zhang,Feilong Guo,Tiejun Kuang

The heterogeneous Fenton-like technology has gained attention for its potential in treating refractory organic wastewater. However, traditional nano-catalysts face challenges such as agglomeration, recovery difficulties, and active site deactivation, limiting their practical use. This study proposes a synergistic material-structure design strategy by fabricating a three-dimensional porous FeNi alloy monolithic catalyst via selective laser melting (SLM). Characterization results show that the SLM process yields a dense and uniform solid solution alloy. This structured catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic activity in the Fenton-like degradation of phenol. Experimental results indicate that at a phenol concentration of 50 mg/L, catalyst dosage of 4 g/L, H 2 O 2 concentration of 5 mmol/L, pH value of 3, and temperature of 50°C, up to 99% of phenol was degraded within 9 minutes. The kinetic reaction constant is measured at 0.31 min⁻¹, with the catalyst being reusable for over 33 cycles. This approach shows great potential in treating phenolic wastewater.
