Properties of Guar Gum/Pullulan/Loquat Leaf Extract Green Composite Packaging in Enhancing the Preservation of Chinese Water Chestnut Fresh-Cut Fruit

Kok Bing Tan,Meixia Zheng,Junyan Lin,Yujing Zhu,Guowu Zhan,Jianfu Chen

Loquat leaf extract (LLE) was added to guar gum and pullulan as an environmentally friendly packaging film (GPE) to preserve Chinese water chestnuts (CWCs). The effect of the amount of LLE on the guar gum/pullulan composite film was investigated. The optimal amount of LLE was 4% (GPE4), with lower water vapor permeability (WVP) and greater mechanical strength, antioxidant, and comparable antibacterial performance than many pullulan-based films. Upon packing the CWCs for 4 days, the weight loss rate of GPE4 was only 1.80 ± 0.05%. For GPE4, the POD activity, the soluble solid content, and the vitamin C (Vc) content of the CWCs were 21.61%, 36.16%, and 26.22% higher than those of the control sample, respectively. More importantly, GPE4 was effective in preserving the quality of CWCs after 4 days of storage, better or at least comparable to non-biodegradable plastic wrapping (PE). Therefore, it can be concluded that GPE films hold significant promise as a sustainable alternative packaging material for preserving fruit-based foods like CWCs, potentially replacing PE in the future.

Design of Schiff base modified guar gum supported palladium complex with multiple coordinated sites and its application towards aryl halides cyanation reaction

Yahao Dong,Jie Yang,Yihan Liu,Jie Gao,Zeyu Yang,Xianbin Jia,Jiaojiao Zhang,Zhiguo Hu,Xinjuan Li

As a significant polysaccharide, owing to fascinating properties, ease of availability and biocompatibility, natural guar gum (GG) has received extensive attention in foods, pharmaceuticals and industrial applications. However, the catalytic applications for GG were not fully explored. Additionally, traditional cyanation methods for preparing significant aryl nitriles often rely on highly toxic cyanide sources, prompting the need for greener alternatives. For exploring and extending full potentials of GG, it is essential that the design and study of this polysaccharide is deemed as new bio-support in heterogeneous catalysis through further chemical modification. In this study, a novel 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) modified GG supported Pd catalyst (GG-SB-Pd) was projected and synthesized by using multidentate coordinated functionalized GG as stabilizer agent for immobilizing palladium. The resulting catalyst could be utilized as an efficient catalyst in the construction of aryl nitriles in cyanation reactions with non-toxic cyanide sources. More importantly, dependent on the multiple coordinated sites (hydroxyl, furyl and imine moieties) with palladium on this polysaccharide, this catalyst was able to efficiently enhance catalytic performance and prevent metal leaching (<1%). In addition, it was proved that the Pd composite could be simply recollected by centrifugation for 5 cycles. A possibly cooperative multifunctional structure was also proposed. Accordingly, this study furnishes valuable insights into the design and fabrication of polysaccharides in potential application of organic transformations.

Microwave-assisted guar gum conjugation improvement in stability of pea protein high internal phase Pickering emulsion and its application in zeaxanthin delivery

Jiannan Yan,Zhuo Li,Tongtong Zhang,Xiuying Xu,Yuzhu Wu,Kefei Chang,Jianfu Wu,Chengbin Zhao,Hao Zhang,Jingsheng Liu

Microwave pre-treatment enhanced PPI-GG glycation degree and shortened reaction time. • Conjugate nanoparticles had smaller particle size and higher interfacial stability. • Microwave-assisted GG conjugation synergistically modified PPI nanoparticle structure. • Rheology and stability of conjugate HIPPEs were improved by microwave pre-treatment. • Microwave-conjugation enhanced protection and delivery of zeaxanthin by HIPPEs. Glycation conjugate nanoparticles of pea protein isolate (PPI) and guar gum (GG) were prepared with microwave pre- and post-treatment for 4 and 6 min. Effect of microwave-assisted GG conjugation on stability and delivery function of high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs) constructed by PPI nanoparticles were investigated. Microwave pre-treatment promoted covalent binding of GG to PPI with smaller particle size (99.02 nm) and higher interfacial stability. The secondary structure of conjugate nanoparticles was more flexible, and their tertiary conformation was looser. Microwave pre-treatment improved appearance, microstructure and rheological properties of conjugate HIPPEs, enhancing their physical, thermal, pH and ionic strength stability. Furthermore, encapsulation efficiency of conjugate HIPPEs with microwave pre-treatment for 4 min was 95.88%, and improved its controlled release effect, resulting in the highest bioaccessibility (62.79%). Therefore, microwave-assisted PPI-GG glycation modified physicochemical properties and structure of conjugate nanoparticles, which enhanced stability of HIPPEs and their delivery function for zeaxanthin. Development and characterization of chitosan/guar gum active packaging containing walnut green husk extract and its application on fresh-cut apple preservation

Longwei Jiang,Fenghui Wang,Xinyan Xie,Cancan Xie,Anqi Li,Ning Xia,Xue Gong,Huajiang Zhang

The aim of this work was to develop active packaging film by using chitosan/guar gum (CG) film matrix and walnut green husk extract (WE), for preservation of fresh-cut apple. WE was used as cross-linking agent to improve physicochemical properties, and as active substances to enhance antioxidant activity of CG films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy results showed WE formed intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions with the film matrix, and microstructures of the film were more compact. With the increase of WE content (0–4 wt%), the mechanical properties of composite films were significantly enhanced, while permeability of water vapor and oxygen was significantly decreased ( p  < 0.05). When the amount of extract reached 4 wt%, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of composite film was significantly increased to 94.59%. CG-WE and CG films were used as active packaging materials to preserve fresh-cut apple. When stored at 4 °C for 10 days, CG-WE films showed better performance in reducing firmness, weight loss, total soluble solids and inhibiting browning and microbial growth of fresh-cut apples. Therefore, as a new type of active food packaging material, CG-WE films have good physical properties, and great potential in ensuring food quality and extending shelf life.

Multifunctional Indicator Films of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Guar Gum (Anthocyanins and Houttuynia Essential Oil Pickering Emulsion) Aided by Residual Networks for Monitoring Pork Freshness

Danfei Liu,Yuyang Chen,Xiaoxuan Li,Wenxuan Zhou,Changfan Zhang

This study developed a multifunctional freshness indicator film based on black wolfberry anthocyanins (BWA) and a Houttuynia essential oil Pickering emulsion for monitoring pork freshness. The film was fabricated using a polyvinyl alcohol/guar gum blend system via a casting method, followed by screen-printing of a chitosan-stabilized Houttuynia essential oil Pickering emulsion onto its surface. The film showed improved mechanical strength (tensile strength up to 32.35 MPa) and ammonia-responsive color change from purplish-red to bluish-green during 4 °C pork storage, correlating with TVB-N (17.73 mg/100g) and TVC (5.98 lg CFU/g) by day 6. Structural analyses (SEM, FTIR, XRD) confirmed hydrogen bonding and enhanced film compactness. A ResNet18 model trained on 305 film images achieved 97.3% classification accuracy and was integrated into a PyQt5-based visual platform. This work integrates natural pigments, antibacterial Pickering emulsions, and deep learning for real-time meat freshness monitoring. However, the film's color stability under prolonged storage and its sensitivity to environmental humidity require further optimization. Future studies should focus on scaling up production and validating the system for diverse meat products under varying storage conditions.

Paper substrate designed with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/cationic guar gum hydrogel and its application in a colorimetric biosensor for rapid bacteria detection

Lei Dai,Yijiao Xue,Sihan Tian,Ping He,Pan Xie,Zhu Long,Guiqiang Fei,Zhirong Chen

The monitoring of foodborne bacterial contamination requires simple and convenient biosensors . This work describes a novel paper-based colorimetric biosensor for the rapid and sensitive bacteria detection. The biosensor was constructed via the encapsulation of D-alanyl-D-alanine capped gold nanoparticles (DADA-AuNPs) in a modified paper that was fabricated by the freeze-drying of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/cationic guar gum composite hydrogel-modified filter paper. The results indicated that the size of DADA-AuNPs largely determined the color of their aqueous system and they exhibited light red to dark red as their size increased from around 6 to 36 nm. All these different sized DADA-AuNPs turned into colorless when encountered with either S. aureus or E. coli . In particular, the smaller the DADA-AuNPs size, the faster the discoloration. The encapsulation of DADA-AuNPs into modified paper negligibly changed their responsiveness towards bacteria. In comparison to the original filter paper and oven-dried hydrogel-modified filter paper, the freeze-dried hydrogel-modified paper was demonstrated to be a better substrate for the encapsulation of DADA-AuNPs since they could be loaded with a larger amount of DADA-AuNPs in a faster way and showed a better perceivable color. This work demonstrated a promising paper-based colorimetric biosensor for the facile and rapid detection of bacteria.

Stepwise reinforcement strategy for guar gum/sodium alginate based films: Introduction of carboxylated cellulose nanofibers by different methods and further calcium ion crosslinking

Zitian Liu,Qingrun Liu,Ligang Lin,Qiying Wang,Wensong Ma,Qi Cheng,Jing Yang,Fengling Tang,Meina Xu,Xu Yang,Huiyang Shang,Hao Wu

Insufficient mechanical, barrier and water resistance properties of guar gum (GG) films limit their application in food packaging field. Herein, the properties of GG films were enhanced by a stepwise modification strategy. The mechanical and water vapor barrier properties of GG films were initially reinforced by doping with a different type of polysaccharide (sodium alginate; SA). Next, carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCN) were introduced as a reinforcing agent to improve film properties via two methods (blending and layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method). Finally, the water resistance of composite films was further enhanced by calcium ion cross-linking treatment. GG/SA composite films exhibited better mechanical strength and water vapor barrier capacity compared to pristine GG film. In addition, the introduction of CCN, either by blending or LBL method, improved the light barrier, water vapor barrier and tensile strength . The calcium ion cross-linking treatment further enhanced the water vapor barrier, thermal stability, tensile strength and water resistance capacity. The potential applications of GG/SA/CCN films in real food packaging were also explored. In short, this study presents a simple and feasible performance enhancement strategy for GG and other underperforming polysaccharide matrix films, with potential applications in the development of high-performance bio-based food packaging materials .

A self-crosslinking powder based on carboxymethyl chitosan and guar gum with free radical scavenging for rapid hemostasis and promotion of wound healing

Zheng Chen,Jiawei Shen,Bin Zuo,Shuohua Gu,Kaiyue Xu,Yingping Li,Qun Wang,Yilin Wang,Jiulong Zhao,Shige Wang

Uncontrolled non-compressible visceral hemorrhage and irregular wet wounds remain difficult to manage because many hemostatic powders lack robust wet adhesion and mechanical integrity under continuous blood flow, leading to displacement and rebleeding. Here, a multifunctional, natural-polysaccharide hemostatic powder (CSO) is engineered from carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), dopamine-grafted sodium alginate (SA-DA), and oxidized guar gum (OGM), and the mixture is activated by EDC/NHS to enable rapid, in situ self-crosslinking. Upon contact with wound, the CSO powder rapidly absorbs tissue exudate or blood, concentrates coagulation factors and blood cells, and undergoes in situ self-crosslinking to form a stable, adherent hydrogel that seals the wound for rapid hemostasis. The incorporated dopamine moiety endows the hydrogel with potent free radical scavenging ability, effectively mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation to accelerate wound healing. In addition, the CSO powder exhibits notable antimicrobial activity, helping to prevent post-hemostatic infection. In rat tail-amputation and liver-incision models, CSO achieves rapid hemostasis with markedly reduced blood loss, and further accelerates infected full-thickness skin repair by dampening inflammation and improving collagen remodeling. These features, together with favorable biocompatibility and practical applicability, position CSO as a promising powder-to-hydrogel platform for emergency and surgical hemostasis with improved healing outcomes.

A highly stretchable, self-adhesive, antimicrobial conductive hydrogel with guar gum/acrylic acid/MXene@AgNPs for multifunctional wearable sensors and electromagnetic interference shielding

Tongle Pu,Changgeng Li,Lin Yang,Xiu-zhi Tang,Yunjun Ruan,Tong Guo

Multifunctional conductive hydrogels have attracted extensive attention in the fields of biomedicine and health monitoring. However, integrating excellent stretchability, self-adhesion, sensitive sensing, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and antibacterial properties into conductive hydrogels for wearable sensor applications remains a significant challenge. In this study, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel (GAMA) was prepared by incorporating MXene@Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) as conductive fillers, which were uniformly dispersed within a dual-network structure of guar gum/acrylic acid. Serving as conductive agents, reinforcing fillers, and antibacterial components, MXene@AgNPs enable the GAMA hydrogel to achieve multifunctional integration and balanced performance. The GAMA hydrogel exhibits outstanding mechanical performance with a tensile strength of 97 kPa and elongation at a break of 850%, self-adhesion (21.5 kPa), and high conductivity (14.04 mS cm−1). Additionally, we employed this hydrogel as a flexible strain sensor to monitor human motion, achieving high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) of 6.48 at 300% strain). The in situ synthesis of AgNPs on MXene nanosheets enhances polarization and interfacial losses of electromagnetic waves, endowing the hydrogel with an EMI shielding effectiveness of 34.5 dB. Furthermore, comprehensive biocompatibility evaluations confirm its excellent antibacterial performance, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility. Therefore, these properties endow the multifunctional GAMA hydrogel with great potential for applications in wearable sensors for human motion monitoring and EMI shielding.

Oil-in-water emulsions prepared using high-pressure homogenisation with Dioscorea opposita mucilage and food-grade polysaccharides: guar gum, xanthan gum, and pectin

Zeyue Ren,Xiaojing Li,Fanyi Ma,Yun Zhang,Weiping Hu,Md Zaved Hossain Khan,Xiuhua Liu

In this study, oil-in-water emulsions made of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), mucilage from Dioscorea opposita (DOM), and food-grade polysaccharides (guar gum [GG], xanthan gum [XG] and pectin [Pec]) were prepared using high-pressure homogenisation. The droplet size distributions, microstructure, turbidity, interfacial tension, creaming index, and stability of emulsions were investigated and compared with those of DOM, GG, XG and Pec. The results showed that 0.4 wt% food-grade polysaccharides (GG, XG, and Pec) with 2 wt% DOM contributed more to the stability of the emulsion during storage. In particular, low concentrations of pectin and DOM emulsions presented smaller droplet size distribution, in the range of 86.34–111.30 nm. Hence, DOM has synergistic effects with food-grade polysaccharides, which could improve the stability of emulsions, suggesting that mucilage from Dioscorea opposita has good potential for use as a natural emulsifier.

Tannic acid-copper ion@black phosphorus doped cationic guar gum/polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite hydrogel for burn wound healing with antioxidant and photothermal antibacterial activities

Yanxiang Sang,Jing Wang,Ruiying Wu,Hongjie Zhang,Benyan Zheng,Bibo Wang,Yuan Hu,Lijun Li,Zhonghan Liu

Burn wounds present unique challenges for dressings due to severe vascular damage, irregular wound shapes, and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, we designed a bio-based multifunctional hydrogel dressing possessing antioxidant, antibacterial, and angiogenic properties. The hydrogel matrix was functionalized by embedding black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) coated with a tannic acid-copper ion complex (BPNS@TA-Cu), thereby imparting unique pH-dependent dual functions to the resulting composite. Specifically, under acidic microenvironments, it demonstrates a synergistic combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and peroxidase-like (POD) activity, conferring potent antibacterial efficacy. In contrast, under neutral conditions, the material effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), thereby exhibiting outstanding antioxidant properties. The hydrogel's rapid self-healing and shape adaptability arose from a dynamic cross-linked network formed via borate ester bonds among gelatin (Gel), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cationic guar gum (CG), BPNS@TA-Cu, and borax. This adaptability allowed the dressing to conform to and fill irregular burn wounds, ensuring close contact. The hydrogel promoted full-thickness burn defect wound healing by facilitating granulation tissue formation, epithelial regeneration, and collagen deposition. Collectively, these findings establish the GPC-BTC hydrogel as a viable and promising multifunctional dressing strategy to accelerate burn wound healing.

Synthesis and evaluation of anionic guar gum derivatives as dual-function inhibitors for methane hydrate formation and metal corrosion in oil and gas pipelines

Li Wan,Xiang-Long Ding,Bo Liu,Yue-Fei Zhang,Jin-Rong Zhong,Yi-Min Dai

This study investigated anionic guar gum derivatives as dual-purpose inhibitors for methane hydrate formation and metal corrosion in oil and gas pipelines. Sulfonated guar gum (SHG), phosphorylated guar gum (PGG), and guar gum grafted acrylamide (GG-g-PAM) were synthesized and evaluated for their kinetic hydrate inhibition and corrosion inhibition properties. The results demonstrated that all anionic guar gums exhibited superior inhibition effects compared to native guar gum and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), with GG-g-PAM achieving the highest maximum subcooling of 10.47 °C at the concentration of 0.5 wt%. SHG showed the most pronounced effect during the hydrate growth stage, and exhibited the best corrosion inhibition efficiency as well, with a significant inhibition efficiency (>92 %) at 0.5 wt%, surpassing other additives and a commercial imidazoline inhibitor. The formation of a protective film on carbon steel, enhanced by anionic groups, was confirmed through increased contact angles and reduced corrosion rates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curves and SEM-EDX spectra further substantiated the effectiveness of the anionic guar gums in preventing carbon steel corrosion in CO 2 -saturated environments. The findings underscore the potential of anionic guar gum, particularly SHG, as a sustainable and effective bio-based additive for simultaneous hydrate inhibition and corrosion protection in oil and gas pipelines.
