NiMo-Based Nanorod Arrays Supported on Ni Foams for Efficient Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Yunfang Yan,Xuejie Cao,Liangmin Ning,Fei Lin,Wenzhuo Qin,Xin Liu,Wen Gu

The construction of low-cost electrocatalysts with good conductivity, excellent intrinsic activity, and superior stability is crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report an outstanding catalyst (Ni0.2Mo0.8N/NiMoP2/MoO2@NC) consisting of NiMo-based nanorod arrays supported on Ni foams for the efficient alkaline HER. It shows an ultralow overpotential of 48 mV and remarkable longevity for over 145 h at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH. The integration of ample compositions is favorable to the formation of heterointerfaces, accelerating electron transfer. The assembly of transition metal nitrides and phosphides fully develops the electrical conductivity of metal materials, which paves the way for superstability. The superior electrocatalytic activities can be attributed to the vital features, including the synergistic effect of Ni0.2Mo0.8N and NiMoP2, good electrical conductivity of MoO2, and corrosion resistance of NC basement. The present work proposes that regulating compositions and hierarchical nanostructures are of significance in developing electrode materials for the HER.

Engineering electron redistribution in NiCoP/Ti3C2Tx MXene through CeO2 coupling to boost HER and OER performance

Junhao Lu,Jun Wang,Yaojin Duan,Lan Ma,Dongfeng Zhai,Ihar Razanau,Kunming Pan,Yaru Li,Saifei Pan

Designing transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with remarkable performance and high stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a significant role in the commercial application of water splitting. Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) exhibits favorable electrocatalytic activity; however, it still suffers from intrinsic limitations such as insufficient intrinsic activity, inferior electrical conductivity, and a tendency toward particle agglomeration. To address these issues, a CeO 2 modified NiCoP particle catalyst (referred to as CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x ) loaded on a few layers of Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene was synthesized using an HCl/LiF etching and hydrothermal phosphorization method. The CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibits significantly lower overpotentials (287 mV for OER and 147 mV for HER) to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding durability, with 93.6% and 84.6% retention of its activity after 27 h of OER and 25 h of HER, respectively. The favorable performance of CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x in HER and OER can be attributed to several advantages. Few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x enhances the electrical conductivity of the material, and its large specific surface area prevents particle agglomeration, thus improving the material stability. The -O/-OH functional groups on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x endow the material with strong hydrophilicity, which facilitates the full contact between active sites and the electrolyte and accelerates the mass transfer and charge transfer kinetics. CeO 2 effectively optimizes the adsorption energy of NiCoP toward hydrogen intermediates by regulating the microelectronic structure of NiCoP, thereby boosting the HER kinetics.

In-situ construct Ni2P/Ni5P4 heterostructured electrocatalyst through controllable Ni2P phase transition for enhanced HER performance

Linyin Huang,Xinyue Wei,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Yanning Qu,Jianlong Wen,Xiaoya Yuan,Qingmei Su,Fangyou Meng,Gaohui Du,Youqing Wang,Bingshe Xu,Kai Wang

In NiP-based catalysts, although Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 have relatively high catalytic activity, the catalytic performance of single-phase Ni 2 P or Ni 5 P 4 is still far from that of noble metal catalysts. The dual-phase heterojunction has better catalytic performance than single-phase materials due to its faster interface charge transfer rate and more active sites. The Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalyst with oriented porous nanosheet arrays grown on carbon cloth (CC), was in-situ constructed through the controllable phase transition of Ni 2 P. By modulating the amount of P source (P-dependent) or the phosphating reaction time (Time-dependent), the degree of the Ni 2 P phase transition could be modulated, thus obtaining the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalyst with the required component ratio of Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 . When the ratio of Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 was 15.7:84.3, the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC catalyst had the best catalytic performance. Its hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials were only 139 and 87 mV overpotentials reaching −10 mA/cm 2 in 1 mol/L KOH and 0.5 mol/L H 2 SO 4 , respectively, which was much lower than that of the single-phase Ni 2 P@CC (base: 278 mV; acid: 123 mV) and Ni 5 P 4 @CC (base: 166 mV; acid: 106 mV) catalysts. Specially, in acidic electrolyte, HER overpotential at a higher current density of −100 mA/cm 2 of the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC catalyst was 270 mV, which was even lower than that of the Pt/C catalyst (328 mV), indicating that the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalysts had promising prospects for commercial applications. The mechanism of catalytic performance enhancement was investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

In-plane intergrowth CoS2/MoS2 nanosheets: binary metal–organic framework evolution and efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysis

Peng Liu,Jianyue Yan,Jianxin Mao,Jiawen Li,Dongxue Liang,Wenbo Song

The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an extremely important reaction in energy conversion and electrolytic industries. Pristine MoS2 exhibits poor alkaline HER activity due to weak water adsorption and dissociation. Precisely manipulating active water dissociation components to form a functional interface with MoS2 would be an effective strategy. Herein, in-plane intergrowth CoS2/MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets have been achieved via a one-step pyrolytic sulfurization of a small-sized Co/Mo-MOF precursor. The in-plane intergrowth structure produced abundant interfaces and modulated the interfacial electronic structure, demonstrating an accelerated water dissociation process. Ultralow overpotentials at both onset (16 mV) and 10 mA cm−2 (75 mV) have been obtained, which surpass those of most top-rated MoS2-based materials and are even proximate to those of commercial Pt/C (0 mV at onset and 60 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively). Under a large current density of 400 mA cm−2, the intergrowth nanosheet exhibited long-term stability, showing potential for applications in alkaline water splitting devices.

Facet-Tailored Co3O4 as Electronic Regulator and Stabilizing Support for Ru Nanocluster: Toward Efficient Alkaline HER

Jia Wang,De Wang,Zhenyu He,Mengyu Yan,Yinyu Xiang,Huipeng Li,Lina Xu,Junsheng Li

Ruthenium-based catalysts are promising alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their comparable activity and lower cost. However, their widespread application in alkaline water electrolysis is limited by insufficient stability and excessive hydrogen binding. Herein, the Ru@Co 3 O 4 nanosheets (Ru@Co 3 O 4 NSs) featuring dominant exposure of the Co 3 O 4 (111) facets and precise anchoring of Ru nanoclusters onto these planes were constructed. The interaction between Ru nanoclusters and the Co 3 O 4 (111) facets induces a downshift of the Ru d -band center, optimizes the interfacial water network, and simultaneously prevents the leaching of Ru species. Ru@Co 3 O 4 NSs deliver exceptional alkaline HER performance, with an overpotential of 9.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and robust durability over 1000 h at 1 A cm −2 . The catalyst also achieves a price-normalized activity of 145.9 A $ −1 , nearly nine times that of commercial Pt/C. When applied in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), Ru@Co 3 O 4 NSs reveal a low cell voltage of 1.93 V at 1 A cm −2 and operate stably for 60 h with a minimal degradation rate of 0.67 mV h −1 . This work provides a promising approach for designing low-cost, high-performance Ru-based catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production.

Activating Ni via heterostructure-induced electron deficiency and spatial intermediate coupling for enhanced alkaline HER/HOR

Wanli Liang,Zixuan Dan,Xiyu Gong,Jinchang Xu,Hongjuan Wang,Yonghai Cao,Hao Yu,Yanshuo Jin,Hao-Fan Wang

The development of hydrogen energy conversion technology offers a solution to the global energy crisis. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) are essential for hydrogen production and utilization. Ni-based catalysts are promising alternatives to Pt-group catalysts under alkaline conditions. However, pure Ni exhibits low activity due to H 2 O dissociation/formation limitations in the rate-determining Volmer step. To overcome this bottleneck, we present a heterostructure-induced electron modulation strategy to regulate the spatial proximity of key intermediates within the inner Helmholtz plane, thereby facilitating Volmer step kinetics. Electron depletion at the Ni site shifts its d -band center upward, enhancing the adsorption of *H, *OH, and *H 2 O. This electronic tuning brings *H and *OH closer and elongates the H–OH bonds in *H 2 O, effectively reducing the Volmer barrier, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We demonstrate this concept using a representative heterostructure of nickel and tungsten nitride on nickel foam (Ni/WN@NF), which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity, requiring only 20 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for HER and reaching an exchange current density of 3.99 mA cm −2 for HOR. This work offers a generalizable interfacial approach for modulating local chemical environments in alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis.

Fe-doped promotes phosphorization and dispersibility of Ni catalysts for efficient and stable HER and OER

Shaojun Sun,Chunyan Zhang,Mingxin Ran,Yujie Zheng,Chuanhua Li,Yu Jiang,Xuemin Yan

Developing efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts is crucial for hydrogen production through electrolysis of water. In this study, a comprehensive work was conducted on the electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution performance of nickel-based phosphides doped with metallic iron. The Ni 5 P 4 /Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P catalysts with heterostructure were synthesized via a simple two-step synthetic route: (i) NaBH 4 pretreatment and in situ hydrolysis, (ii) low-temperature phosphating. It was found that iron doping not only improves the dispersibility but also increases the valence state of nickel in phosphating products. The Ni 5 P 4 /Ni 2 P/Fe 2 P-2 catalyst prepared with a molar ratio of 3 between Ni and Fe exhibits the best performance for HER and OER. In detail, only 185 and 190 mV overpotentials in acidic and alkaline electrolytes are required when the current density of hydrogen production is 10 mA cm −1 , respectively. To achieve the same current density under alkaline conditions, an overpotential of 215 mV is required for oxygen evolution, which is superior to IrO 2 . This work would enlighten the construction of more advanced bifunctional catalysts (HER and OER) via metal Fe doping.

Magnetic reinforcement of electrocatalytic HER performance on Keplerate polyoxomolybdate-derived multi-interfacial FeMo/Mo2C@C catalyst

Hongyu Li,Ting Wang,Ming Xu,Ping Wang,Ze Gao,Wenjing Zhang,Mei Liu,Ming Feng

Electrocatalysis is a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen generation, and the exploration of effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is of great significance for exploiting and utilizing renewable energy. Herein, the magnetic FeMo/Mo 2 C@C composites with multi-heterostructure interfaces and hierarchical structure are first designed and fabricated via molybdenum blue preassembly strategy by using Keplerate polyoxomolybdate {Mo 72 Fe 30 } and melamine as precursors. Benefiting from its unique characteristics, FeMo/Mo 2 C@C catalyst exhibits superior HER electrocatalytic activity than pure Mo 2 C@C. Interestingly, the optimized FeMo/Mo 2 C@C presents the HER magnetic reinforcement by simply applying an magnetic field, characteristic of 97 mV@10 mA cm –2 , 201 mV@50 mA cm –2 , and a robust durability for more than 18 h, which are 120 and 85 mV less than that of FeMo/Mo 2 C@C without magnetization, and greatly lower than comparative Mo 2 C@C catalyst (272 mV@10 mA cm –2 and 396 mV@50 mA cm –2 ). This may be attributed to that the FeMo/Mo 2 C@C can afford fast electrons transmitting from electrode to active sites during HER process when imposing an external magnetic field. This work offers a novel design direction to develop magnetic transition metal based-materials for electrochemical applications and paves a new way to utilize the magnetic enhancement to further improve the hydrogen evolution performance.

Synthesis of S-doped AuPbPt alloy nanowire-networks as superior catalysts towards the ORR and HER

Xiang Zhang,Shibin Wang,Chenshuo Wu,Hong Li,Yi Cao,Shenggang Li,Haibing Xia

In this work, S-doped AuPbPt alloy nanowire-networks (NWNs) are synthesized by conformal growth of Pt onto S-doped AuPb NWNs as templates, which are obtained by NaBH4 reduction of an extended network of 2 nm Au nanoclusters resulting from Pb2+ ion-directed self-assembly. The contents of Pb and S in the S-doped AuPb NWNs are optimized in order to create the appropriate content of PtS in the resulting S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs because Pb in both AuPb3 and PbS is involved with the formation of PtS and PbPtx during the conversion of S-doped AuPb NWNs to S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs. Moreover, the formation of an optimal content of PtS in the resulting S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs remarkably downshifts the d-band center of Pt, on the basis of results from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and then improves the resistance of active Pt sites against oxidation and in turn renders the Pt surfaces more catalytically active for the ORR and more structurally stable. Furthermore, the as-prepared S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs indeed exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards both the ORR (e.g., Eonset = 1.047 V and E1/2 = 0.921 V) and HER (Eonset = −2 mV and overpotential of 12 mV at 10 mA cm−2) in acidic media with excellent durability because of the presence of an optimal amount of PtS, based on the results of control experiments and DFT calculations.

MoS2 Nanoplates Embedded in Co–N-Doped Carbon Nanocages as Efficient Catalyst for HER and OER

Xuebin Hou,Huimin Zhou,Min Zhao,Yibing Cai,Qufu Wei

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), although it has shown great potential use in electrocatalysis, owns inert basal planes and the low electrical conductivity that limit its effective application. In this work, a MoS2/carbon nanocage hybrid catalyst (MoS2/Co–N–CN2) with a higher density of exposed edge sites and conductivity was developed for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The hybrid catalyst was successfully prepared via confined growth of MoS2 in the porous carbon matrix derived from the metal organic framework ZIF-67. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the hybrid catalyst contained a significantly higher density of terminal sulfur edges than bulk MoS2. The hybrid catalyst exhibited a high catalytic activity for HER and OER, with low onset overpotentials and small Tafel slopes. This enhanced catalytic performance is a direct result of the increased exposed sulfur edge sites, high surface area, and unique synergic effects between MoS2 nanoplates and Co–N-doped porous carbon matrix. Therefore, the hybrid (MoS2/Co–N–CN2) catalyst serves as a highly promising bifunctional catalyst for HER and OER.

Improvement of HER activity for MoS2: insight into the effect and mechanism of phosphorus post-doping

Xianpei Ren,Fan Yang,Rong Chen,Pinyun Ren,Yonghua Wang

MoS2-Based materials are considered to be excellent alternative catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), where doping engineering has proven to be an effective way to tune their HER activity. Herein, a novel and facile approach was developed to prepare a phosphorus-doped molybdenum sulfide (P-MoS2) electrocatalyst by a post-doping method. After phosphorus doping, the P-MoS2 catalyst accomplished high HER catalytic activity with a low onset overpotential of −118 mV and a small Tafel slope of 52 mV dec−1, making it a promising HER electrocatalyst for practical applications.

“Novel UiO-66/MoS2 hybrid materials: Dual-functionality as battery/supercapacitor electrodes and electrocatalysts for HER”

Bahaaudin M. Raffah,Haseebul Hassan,Muhammad Waqas Iqbal,Yas Al-Hadeethi,Bassim Arkook

The precisely defined nanostructures are used to develop highly efficient catalysts for processes like the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and energy storage. However, this endeavor remains a formidable challenge. The porous Zr-MOF and its composite with molybdenum disulfide were prepared using a straightforward hydrothermal technique. These materials were evaluated for their supercapacitor and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. The capacitance experiments indicated a noteworthy increase in the specific capacitances to 1392C/g for UiO-66/MoS 2 . The supercapattery was also formed using UiO-66/MoS 2 and activated carbon. The UiO-66/MoS 2 device demonstrates 66.87 Wh/kg energy density at a power density of 1100 W/kg. The findings revealed that UiO-66/MoS 2 exhibited a lower overpotential of 132 mV for HER. The superior HER catalytic performance of UiO-66/MoS 2 was due to the enhanced availability of active sites at the edges and vertices of nanocubes in the nanoflower architecture. This study highlights the UiO-66/MoS 2 can substantially enhance the storage and catalytic activity.
