Schottky Barrier-Mediated Charge Separation in an MXene/ZnIn2S4 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic HMF-to-DFF Conversion

Chu Sun,Rui Bi,Chunhui Song,Deyang Zhao,Zhiguo Zhu,Kaixuan Yang,Christophe Len,Hongying Lü,Ting Su

2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is an important biomass-derived platform chemical, widely recognized as a key intermediate building block in the synthesis of biodegradable polymers and pharmaceutical compounds. The mild and sustainable nature of photocatalysis has attracted considerable attention for such valorization processes, highlighting the need for in-depth exploration of heterostructure-based photocatalysts to enhance catalytic performance. In this study, we report the fabrication and photocatalytic application of a Nb2CTx MXene/ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) Schottky heterojunction with intimate interfacial contact. This heterostructure significantly enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers while prolonging their lifetime. The observed enhancement is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the n-type ZIS semiconductor and the two-dimensional metallic conductor MXene, which induces favorable band bending in ZIS and facilitates the formation of a Schottky barrier at the MXene–ZIS interface. This barrier effectively inhibits electron backflow, thereby promoting charge carrier separation and enhancing interfacial charge dynamics. Compared to pristine ZIS, the Nb2CTx/ZIS heterojunction catalyst achieves a significantly higher DFF yield under ambient temperature and pressure, without the need for additional oxidants. This finding not only demonstrates a highly efficient route for DFF production under mild conditions but also offers a new design strategy for MXene-based Schottky heterojunctions in biomass valorization via photocatalysis.

Unveiling Cation-Dependent Electrocatalytic Behavior in HMF Oxidation over Organic-Ligand-Tailored Charged Cu-Ni(OH)2

Liang Wan,Shaoyan Wang,Can Lei,Chuqian Xiao,Sheng Hu,Yikai Yang,Xingchen Ye,Dongqi Liu,Xiuming Bu,Ming Gong,Xiulan Hu,Xianying Wang

Electrocatalytic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation (HMFOR) is a sustainable route for biomass valorization to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), yet balancing the competitive adsorption of HMF and OH− at the electrode−electrolyte interface is pivotal for boosting catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, we report a terephthalic acid (PTA) modification strategy to tailor Cu-Ni(OH)2 with tunable metal valence and controllable surface charge, fabricating positively charged Cu-Ni(OH)2 and negatively charged Cu-Ni(OH)2-PTA. PTA functionalization elevates the Ni oxidation state and reinforces HMF adsorption on the catalyst surface. In situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirm that the negatively charged surface of Cu-Ni(OH)2-PTA efficiently mitigates the steric hindrance of hydrated ions and preserves a fully hydrated Cs+ interfacial microenvironment. This synergy optimizes the adsorption equilibrium of HMF and OH− via efficient and persistent HMF capture, enabling continuous enhancement of HMFOR activity. Consequently, Cu-Ni(OH)2-PTA delivers superior HMFOR performance in CsOH electrolyte, including a high FDCA Faradaic efficiency (98.2%), large current density, excellent cycling stability over 10 cycles, and stable operation for 120 h in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) system. Notably, a high FDCA Faradaic efficiency of ∼86% is retained even in a pH 13 electrolyte with 1 M Cs+. This work elucidates the coupled effects of metal valence, surface charge, cation hydration, and interfacial water structure on HMFOR, providing a universal interfacial engineering principle for designing advanced electrocatalysts for efficient biomass electrooxidation.

Controllable self-assembled AuNRs array with dual signal amplification for SERS detection of 5-HMF in honey

Jia Bin Zhang,Wan Hui Guo,Hao Zhang,Wen Pan,Ye Min Guo,Fan-Li Zhang,Cheng Wang,Sheng Hong Liu

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a toxic compound formed during the improper processing or storage of honey, endangering human health. Thus, rapid and accurate detection of 5-HMF is essential. In this study, we fabricated uniform gold nanorod (AuNR) array surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with high-density plasmonic hot spots by optimizing the AuNR aspect ratio and employing a novel three-phase self-assembly technique, significantly enhancing detection sensitivity and reproducibility. The AuNR array (aspect ratio of 3.5) showed the strongest signals due to the close match between its 781 nm longitudinal LSPR wavelength and the 785 nm excitation laser wavelength, enabling efficient resonant coupling. Leveraging the dual-resonance of the AuNR arrays, tip-induced field focusing and nanogap-mediated plasmon coupling synergistically produced ultrahigh electromagnetic enhancement for SERS detection. Using AuNR array-3.5 as the SERS substrate, the signal intensity demonstrated a positive correlation with a concentration of 5-HMF in the range of 1–50 mg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.093 mg/L. The substrate revealed excellent uniformity (relative standard deviation, RSD = 3.86%), reproducibility (inter-batch RSD = 2.51%), reusability (RSD = 13.2%) and stability (stored at 4 °C for 30 days). In spiked honey samples, this method achieved an LOD of 35.4 mg/kg, well below the international maximum residue limit (40 mg/kg), and recovery values ranging from 73.32% to 95.92%, confirming its high sensitivity and accuracy. This work provided a rapid, efficient approach for detection of 5-HMF in honey and highlights its application potential in SERS-based food safety monitoring technologies.

Jahn-Teller distortion lowers the kinetic barrier for Co3+/Co4+ redox: A pathway to ultrafast HMF electrooxidation

Dan Liu,Yudong Li,Jian Li,Chengyu Wang,Jingwei Li,Rong Wang,Xiaohui Yang

Mn incorporation into Co 3 O 4 induces Jahn–Teller distortion and Co 3+ spin-state transition ( t 2 g 6 e g 0  →  t 2 g 5 e g 1 ). • Such electronic modulation weakens Co O bonding and lowers Co 3+  → Co 4+ kinetic barrier. • Mn-Co 3 O 4 achieves ∼100% HMF conversion, 97.8% FDCA yield, and 96.0% Faradaic efficiency at 1.4 V vs. RHE. • DFT reveals that Mn incorporation reduces the PDS free energy from 4.05 eV to 2.11 eV by facilitating α-C–H cleavage. The electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a key transformation for sustainable polymer production, yet its efficiency is hampered by the kinetically demanding cleavage of the α-C–H bonding in the hydroxymethyl group. Herein, we demonstrate that Jahn–Teller distortion serves as an effective strategy to overcome this limitation. By incorporating Mn 3+ ( t 2g 3 e g 1 ) into Co 3 O 4 , we induce a spin-state transition of Co 3+ from low-spin ( t 2g 6 e g 0 ) to intermediate-spin ( t 2g 5 e g 1 ), which weakens Co O bonding and lowers the kinetic barrier for Co 3+  → Co 4+ oxidation. Compared with that of Co 3 O 4 , Mn-Co 3 O 4 achieves a complete HMF conversion with 97.8% of FDCA yield and 96.0% of Faradaic efficiency at 1.4 V vs. RHE, representing a 3.72-fold enhancement in intrinsic activity. Computational and theoretical analysis corroborates that Mn-induced Jahn–Teller electronic modulation not only benefits the adsorption and activation of HMF molecules but also facilitates the cleavage of α-C–H bonding, thereby lowering the reaction barrier. This work establishes Jahn–Teller-distortion-mediated Co 3+ /Co 4+ redox regulation as a focused electronic-structure strategy for promoting high-valence-Co-driven HMF electrooxidation. The Jahn-Teller-driven generation of high-valence Co 4+ species in pristine Co 3 O 4 by the incorporation of Mn 3+ ( t 2g 3 e g 1 ) accelerate the rate-determining initial oxidation of hydroxymethyl groups, markedly enhancing reaction kinetics of HMF to FDCA. Efficient conversion of chitin to HMF under the co-catalytic system of formic acid and silicotungstic acid

Zhou Luxiao,Gao Kun,He Peng,Yu Huahua,Xing Ronge,Liu Song,Qin Yukun

The conversion process of chitin, one of the abundant biomass resources on the earth, not only follows the principles of green chemistry, but also has significant value in industrial applications. However, it is a great challenge to directly convert insoluble and rigid structured chitin to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). To address this issue, we developed a green conversion process combining pretreatment and catalytic system. Chitin was first pretreated by hexafluoro isopropanol (HFIP), which somewhat disrupted the hydrogen bonding network within the chitin structure. Subsequently, formic acid (FA) and silicotungstic acid (STA) synergistically catalyzed the conversion to HMF in a biphasic system of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-Me-THF)/H 2 O, and high yields (40.2%) HMF was obtained under the optimism conditions. The product distribution was analyzed by HPLC-MS and the co-catalysis of FA with STA was evidenced. A dual-function catalytic system with both Lewis and Brønsted acids was created, the catalytic system that significantly improved the efficiency of complex tandem catalytic reactions with chitin. Based on the experimental results, a possible pathway for chitin conversion was deduced, providing a new catalytic idea for the efficient conversion of chitin to HMF.

Synergistic inhibitory effects of EGCG and chitosan or sodium alginate on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) formation in biscuits

Yilun Huang,Yuwei Liu,Wenting Liu,Huiyu Hu,Daoxue Zhou,Xiaoxiang Peng,Chang Li,Yi Chen,Qiang Yu,Yuting Wang

5 Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a heat-induced hazard that common in baked goods. Although bioactive compounds such as catechins and polysaccharides could inhibit 5-HMF, their inhibition efficiency was limited when used alone. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the synergistic inhibitory impact of catechins and polysaccharides on 5-HMF in biscuits. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), chitosan, and sodium alginate were screened out due to their high maximum inhibition rates (55.90, 67.20 and 66.62%, respectively), and their synergistic inhibitory effects on 5-HMF were investigated by isobologram analysis. The interaction index (γ) varies inversely with the synergism. When γ < 1 or >1, it represented synergism or antagonism, respectively. The results showed the EGCG/chitosan ratios of 1:1 (γ = 0.221) had better synergism than that of 1:2 (γ = 0.671) and 1:3 (γ = 0.523). Moreover, EGCG and sodium alginate only showed a synergistic effect at ratio of 1:1 (γ = 0.358), while an antagonistic effect was observed at ratios of 1:2 and 1:3 (γ = 1.12 and 1.25, respectively). The optimal inhibitory effect (54.57%) was achieved when EGCG-sodium alginate (1:1) at 0.2 g/kg. Compared with those used alone, the co-addition of EGCG and chitosan could decrease the dosage of EGCG to 1/5 and that of chitosan to 1/7, indicating a significant improvement of inhibit efficiency. Finally, Inhibitors’ concentration correlated negatively with 5-HMF content and browning index, suggesting they might inhibit 5-HMF by hindering Maillard or caramelization reactions. This study provided an efficient and cost-effective solution for 5-HMF control in baking products.

Hierarchical Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Catalyst by the Pickering HIPE Technique: Synthesis and Application in HMF Production

Bing Li,Yao Chen,Wen Guan,Yanan Wei,Yunlei Zhang,Yongsheng Yan

In this paper, water-in-oil (W/O)-type Pickering high-internal phase emulsions (Pickering HIPEs) were stabilized using the modified SBA-15 with appropriate wettability as the stable particle. After thermal polymerization and subsequent sulfonation, we obtained hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts (SNCs) with acid–base bifunctional active sites. The as-prepared catalysts have hierarchical porous structures, and acidic and basic catalytic activity centers, which can significantly improve the catalytic activity of the conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The results showed that the highest HMF yield of 61.3% can be obtained, and the recovered catalyst still has a significant catalytic activity after four consecutive cycles. This work offers a versatile strategy for developing nitrogen-doped carbonaceous catalysts for a wide range of biomass transformation to platform chemicals.

Highly efficient electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by Cu regulated Co carbonate hydroxides boosting hydrogen evolution reaction

Huimin Li,Xinyuan Huang,Ye Lv,Jinli Zhang,Wei Li

The biomass electrochemical oxidation has attracted worldwide attention owning to its carbon-neutral and sustainable nature. Here, different morphologies of CoCu-carbonate hydroxides (CH) electrodes are prepared through one-step hydrothermal method for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrocatalytic oxidation (HMF-ECO) to high-valued 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) for the first time. The results illustrate that Cu can regulate CoCu–CH morphologies from 1D nanorods to 2D ultra-thin nanosheets besides modulating the catalytic compositions . The optimal Co 1 Cu 1 –CH exhibits hybrid nanostructures containing the 1D nanorods and 2D ultra-thin nanosheets , which has the largest ECSA and specific surface area, as well as the smallest Tafel slope and impedance. The oxidation potential of HMF-ECO is 1.42 V vs RHE with the conversion of HMF 99.57%, the selectivity for FDCA 99.91%, and the FE 98.88%. In addition, Cu can promote the conversion of Co 2+ to the favorable Co 3+ for HMF-ECO on the catalyst surface . Density functional theory calculation indicates that Cu can improve charges transfer to HMF and lower its adsorption energy . In situ Raman spectra tests indicate that cobalt species is the active site for HMF-ECO. Furthermore, at 1.42 V vs RHE, the coupling of HMF-ECO and hydrogen evolution reaction shows that the cathodic hydrogen evolution rate is 92.33 L h −1  m −2 , which is 3.69 times more than water splitting. This work provides a special structures material to process intensification of HMF electrooxidation coupling hydrogen production .

Enhancing Carbonization of Microcrystalline Cellulose through Ball Milling under Decoupled Temperature and Pressure Hydrothermal Conditions

Kaile Li,Jiahui Hu,Zhiqiang Xu,Shijie Yu,Qinghai Li,Yanguo Zhang,Hui Zhou

Hydrothermal treatment of cellulose is a promising green route for bioenergy and biochemical production, yet requiring investigations of the mechanisms. In this study, the effects of cellulose crystallinity and decoupled temperature and pressure conditions on cellulose conversion and product distribution were investigated. Microcrystalline cellulose was ball-milled for varying durations, leading to a reduction in crystallinity, with 4 h of milling sufficient to achieve near-complete amorphization. Unlike concurrent recrystallization and hydrolysis observed under autogenous pressure, decoupled conditions significantly accelerated hydrolysis of cellulose. Notably, lower crystallinity cellulose exhibited significant improvements in glucose and 5-HMF yields, with 4-hour ball milling showing optimal performance among all samples. Furthermore, carbon sub-micron spheres were largely produced, which were confirmed via PTFE encapsulation experiments to primarily consist of secondary char deriving from re-polymerization and condensation reactions of the liquid phase. Overall, this study demonstrates that lower crystallinity not only facilitates hydrolysis but also accelerates the carbonization processes under decoupled pressure conditions, highlighting its potential for efficient biomass conversion into valuable products.

A mutually beneficial waste-to-biochar strategy: Mn-mediated dual enhancement of 5-HMF production and catalytic performance

Yan Sun,Ranxin Li,Qiubo Wang,Wen-da Oh,Mingjie Huang,Xiaohui Wu,Tao Zhou

The concept of converting biowaste to energy is popular worldwide; however, overcoming the trade-off between bio-oil recovery and obtaining functional biochar remains challenging. This study investigated the effects of three transition metal ions (Mn 2+ , Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ ) throughout the entire process of recovering 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from forestry waste and on the catalytic abilities of biochar derived from the oil-extracted residue. The Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , and Mn 2+ ions significantly increased 5-HMF yields by 93- to 158-fold compared to the metal-free control. However, only marginal improvements in the catalytic ability of the residue-derived biochar for persulfate activation were observed for Cu- or Fe-doped biochar, despite the general benefit of transition metal doping for biochar functionalization. Interestingly, a dual Mn-mediated promotion was achieved beyond enhancing 5-HMF production. The Mn-doped biochar (Mn-Biochar) exhibited excellent peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation capability, enhancing the degradation of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by 6.6- to 15.0-fold. Characterizations revealed that incorporated nitrogen was responsible for this enhancement. N-doping transformed the Mn species into MnO, which tripled the Mn loading capacity and enhanced the electrical conductivity of the biochar. The formed Mn-N x structure in the biochar (Mn-N-FBBC) facilitated polarization of the O O bond and cleavage of the S O bond in PDS, generating 1 O 2 for SMX degradation. Life cycle assessment (LCA) indicated that this dual Mn-mediated process for 5-HMF recovery and biochar production offers synergistic benefits, realizing the “waste-resource-material-treatment” paradigm in biomass conversion.

ZIF-67 derived hollow carbon with embedded Co nanoparticles for highly selective hydrogenation of HMF to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran

Xiangyu Jia,Xiaoming Li,Shiying Li,Kai Yuan,Xiaoqing Gao,Shanhui Zhu,Mei Dong,Weibin Fan

Metals embedded nitrogen-doped carbon (M/NC) materials have garnered substantial attention due to the catalytic active centers provided by their transition metals. Here, the ZIF-67 derived Co/NC hollow structure catalyst (Co/NHC-4) exhibited remarkable performance in the hydrogenation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to valuable 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF). Under mild conditions of 60 °C and 2 MPa H 2 , the conversion of HMF reached nearly 100 %, with DHMF selectivity >99 %. Through the integration of advanced characterization techniques, such as TEM, XPS, XAFS, Raman spectroscopy, vapor adsorption curve, H 2 -TPD and in situ FTIR spectroscopy, it was demonstrated that the superior hydrogenation performance of hollow-structured catalysts primarily stems from unique morphology. Specifically, the hollow morphology facilitates the adsorption and diffusion of HMF on Co surface, which substantially enhances the hydrogenation efficiency. DFT calculation reveals the preferential parallel adsorption geometry of HMF and the energetically favorable hydrogenation pathway.

Effectively enhancing conversion of cellulose to HMF by combining in-situ carbonic acid from CO2 and metal oxides

Shuangshuang Jing,Xuefei Cao,Linxin Zhong,Xinwen Peng,Runcang Sun,Jinchao Liu

Efficient valorization of cellulose is a sustainable route yet a challenging topic to solve the crisis of fossil resources. Although heterogeneous catalysts such as metal oxides have various advantages, the low surface contact area between metal oxides and cellulose is unfavourable for the hydrolysis of cellulose and thus restricts the application of metal oxides in direct conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This work presented the utilization of in-situ carbonic acid from CO 2 as a green acid to enhance the conversion of cellulose to HMF in the presence of ZrO 2 and TiO 2 . Combination of in-situ carbonic acid, ZrO 2 and TiO 2 exhibited a distinctive catalysis on the hydrolysis of cellulose and monosaccharide , isomerization of glucose and monosaccharide conversion in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H 2 O/NaCl system. Especially, in-situ carbonic acid played a significant role in cellulose degradation and accelerated transforming insoluble polysaccharide into soluble oligosaccharide or monosaccharide, and thus promoted the cellulose conversion catalyzed by metal oxides. A high yield of HMF from cellulose (48.4%) was achieved by physically mixing commercial TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , and CO 2 . Due to the significant effects on cellulose degradation and HMF selectivity improvement, in-situ carbonic acid offers a green, low-cost and environmentally friendly co-catalyst for highly effective converting cellulose into HMF.
