In this work, we present core/shell Au@MnO 2 nanoparticles-based visual sensing strategy for mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) detection. The MnO 2 shell of Au@MnO 2 nanoparticles catalyzes the oxidation reaction between tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and oxygen in the air, generating blue derivative (oxTMB) with an absorption peak at 650 nm. Glutathione (GSH) inhibits the formation of oxTMB, reversing the reaction and turning it back into colorless TMB molecules. While in the existence of Hg 2+ , GSH binds to Hg 2+ due to the strong affinity between the Hg 2+ and the -SH, and in this situation, Au@MnO 2 catalyzes the oxidation of TMB to make the solution become blue. Using the colorimetric sensor, the detection limit of Hg 2+ reached as low as 0.473 nM by UV–vis spectroscopy and 1 nM under the naked eye observation, which is lower than toxicity level of Hg 2+ (10 nM) formulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Rapid and simple determination of mercury ion (Hg2+) in pharmaceuticals and soil samples is vital for human health and the environmental monitoring. Vertically-ordered mesoporous silica films (VMSF) supported by the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode surface were prepared by electrochemically assisted self-assembly method and utilized for electrochemical detection of Hg2+. Owing to the negatively charged channel walls and ultrasmall pore diameter, VMSF displays obvious cationic selectivity and has highly electrostatic interaction for Hg2+, giving rise to the strong electrochemical signals. By recording the anodic stripping signals of adsorbed Hg2+ using differential pulse voltammetry, quantitative detection of Hg2+ was achieved with a wide linear range (0.2 μM–20 μM) and a low limit of detection (3 nM). Furthermore, considering the anti-fouling and anti-interference capacity of VMSF, the proposed VMSF/ITO sensor has been successfully applied to detect Hg2+ in pharmaceuticals and soil samples without tedious pretreatment processes of samples.

A homogeneous membrane enabled Hg(II) capture and trace-level Hg(II) determination. • S- and N-containing groups dominated Hg(II) binding with a capacity of 639.12 mg/g. • The assembled DGT achieved superior performance with additional correction. • Field trials in coastal aquaculture area yielded Hg(II) concentrations of 1.24–2.62 ng/L. Background Mercury is highly toxic. Hg(II) methylation produces methylmercury, which biomagnifies in aquatic food webs and poses neurological risks. Grab sampling may not represent average labile Hg(II) concentrations during deployment in estuarine and coastal aquaculture waters. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) provides time-integrated measurements, but matrix interference and ion-dependent corrections limit some binding phases. Reliable monitoring requires a matrix-tolerant binding phase. Results A homogeneous thiol-functionalized chitosan membrane (CS-MSA/PVA) was fabricated as a DGT binding layer. The membrane exhibited a maximum Hg(II) capacity of 639.12 mg/g and high affinity at trace levels, with S- and N-containing sites jointly participating in binding. CS-MSA/PVA@DGT achieved 99.0–100.5% elution within 20 min using HCl-thiourea. Hg(II) was measured by hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS). The method blank and LOD were 0.45 ± 0.094 ng and 0.28 ng/disc. Hg(II) accumulated linearly in ultrapure water, river water and seawater, with effective diffusion coefficients of 17.9, 16.8 and 16.2 × 10 −6 cm 2 /s, respectively. C DGT /C SOL remained within 0.90–1.10 across pH 3.6–9.6, ionic strength 0–800 mmol/L, fulvic acid below 25 mg/L, major seawater ions, and Mg 2+ /Cl − gradients, requiring no Mg 2+ or Cl − correction. Static and stepwise dynamic spike-recovery tests confirmed time-weighted average Hg(II) determination in river water and seawater ( C DGT /C SOL = 0.91–1.08). After temperature and diffusive boundary layer correction, field DGT-labile Hg(II) concentrations were 1.24–2.62 ng/L, agreeing with purge-trap HG-AFS measurements within 10% deviation. Significance The homogeneous membrane combines efficient Hg(II) capture and quantitative elution with tolerance to coastal water matrices. CS-MSA/PVA@DGT supports labile Hg(II) monitoring and assessment of Hg exposure and aquaculture water quality. Download: Download high-res image (455KB) Download: Download full-size image

Mercury (Hg) contamination in water and soil poses severe ecological and human health risks, yet conventional sorbents often suffer from limited capacity, selectivity, and stability. Here, we report a bifunctional porous organic polymer (AMTD-TCT) rationally constructed by covalently crosslinking 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole with trichlorotriazine, thereby integrating abundant sulfur and nitrogen coordination sites within a stable mesoporous framework. AMTD-TCT exhibits an ultrahigh Hg(II) adsorption capacity of 1257.7 mg g−1, far exceeding most reported porous sorbents. Adsorption follows monolayer chemisorption, governed by strong S–Hg and N–Hg coordination and Na+/Hg2+ion exchange, while hierarchical porosity ensures rapid diffusion and efficient utilization of active sites. The polymer maintains robust performance over a wide pH range and demonstrates strong retention with minimal desorption, underscoring its environmental durability. These findings highlight AMTD-TCT as a highly effective and scalable platform for Hg(II) remediation in complex aqueous–soil systems and illustrate a generalizable molecular design strategy for developing multifunctional porous polymers in advanced separation and purification technologies.

In this work, a new paper-based device (PAD) was developed for the colorimetric detection of multiple heavy metals. The sensing principle of this PAD is based on the analyte-regulated photocatalytic activity of quantum dots (QDs) to certain substrates. The PAD consisted of three filter paper layers, defining a sample area, three channels, and three testing areas. Three photocatalytic reactions between different QDs and their corresponding substrates could be performed in one device, achieving the simultaneous detection of Cu(II), Mn(II), and Hg(II). The detection limits are 7.3 nM for Cu(II), 5.4 nM for Mn(II), and 8.1 nM for Hg(II), respectively. This PAD was applied to analyze real samples and the results were consistent with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer. This approach may provide a promising colorimetric sensing platform for multi-target analysis.

In this work, we developed a cheap and effective magnetic composite adsorbent ( MSP ) by introducing starch/polyethyleneimine to the surface of magnetic mesoporous silica. The prepared material was characterized by FT-IR, TG, XRD, SEM and TEM to determine its composition and morphology. Adsorption experiment showed that the removal rate of mercury(II) and adsorption capacity could reach 97.87% and 244.87 mg/g after 150 min. The kinetic study indicated that the adsorption data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption equilibrium data belonged to the Langmuir model. Meanwhile, the study of coexisting ions showed that MSP had a highly selective adsorption of mercury(II), and the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent after five times accounted for 91.27% of the initial adsorption capacity, which indicated magnetic nanomaterial manifested excellent selectivity and reutilization for mercury(II) adsorption. All in all, a feasible methods and cheap materials were implied to prepare a new magnetic composite adsorbent, and it will be a candidate for uptake of mercury(II) ions from industrial wastewater.

The presented voltammetric mercury(II) sensor is based on the specific interaction between Hg(II) ion and thymine-thymine base pairs. Reduced graphene oxide is functionalized with gold nanorods and then loaded with thionine and streptavidin (RGO@AuNR-TH-SA). A T-rich thiolated DNA (S1) is firstly immobilized on a gold electrode. In the presence of Hg (II), the T-rich biotin-DNA (biotin-S2) binds to S1 via T-Hg(II)-T interaction. Then, the RGO@AuNR-TH-SA is linked to the gold electrode by specific binding between SA and biotin-S2. This produces an electrochemical signal (at −0.208 V vs. Ag/AgCl) of TH that depends on the concentration of Hg (II). The peak current increases linearly in the 1 to 200 nM Hg (II) concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.24 nM. The sensor is highly selective for Hg (II) over other environmentally relevant metal ions, even at concentration ratios of >1000.
Schematic representation of a voltammetric biosensor for mercury(II) using reduced graphene oxide@gold nanorods (RGO@AuNRs) and thymine-Hg(II)-thymine interaction. It is based on the fact that RGO@AuNR can strongly adsorb thionine (TH) and streptavidin to realize the signal amplification.

Adsorption technique is considered to be an effective way to remove heavy metal species from aqueous solutions and cellulose based materials are widely used as good candidates of adsorbents. However, low grafting efficiency of functional groups has been a major challenge reducing the heavy metal adsorption capacity of cellulose based adsorbents. In this work, a diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid modified cellulose is synthesized by an efficient catalyzed approach on the basis of glycidyl methacrylate pre-grafting (G-DMC). As a contrast, epichlorohydrin is employed as coupling side chain to react with the same polyacid (DMC) to evaluate the effect of pre-grafting. It is verified that “pre-grafting technique” significantly improves the load efficiency of polyacid and enhances the adsorption performance that the as-prepared adsorbent using pre-grafting technique shows much higher adsorption capacity ( Q m ) towards mercury in aqueous solutions with Q m of 443.8 mg/g, which is 3.5 folds of the epichlorohydrin grafted one. In addition, the kinetic adsorption experiments confirm that G-DMC achieves its adsorption equilibrium in a shorter time of 10 min. After five cycles of regeneration process, G-DMC could maintain 88.13% of its original adsorption capacity. Moreover, the live/dead cell fluorescence staining demonstrates the good biological safety of the material that the cell viability of murine L929 fibroblasts could retain close to 100% after 24 h of cultivation with G-DMC. Thus, this pre-grafting strategy is expected to provide an environmentally friendly method to amplify the adsorption capacity of the designed receptor for guest species.

An ultrasensitive methodology was successfully developed for the quantitative detection of picomolar Hg2+ based on the combination of thymine–Hg2+–thymine (T–Hg2+–T) coordination chemistry and exonuclease III-aided recycling signal amplification. Single-strand probe DNA was immobilized on an Au electrode via an Au–S bond. In the presence of Hg2+, the probe DNA hybridized with the target DNA containing four thymine–thymine (T–T) mismatches via the Hg2+-mediated coordination of T–Hg2+–T base pairs. Then the probe DNA in the DNA duplex was specifically recognized and selectively digested by exonuclease III; in contrast the target DNA was safely dissociated from the DNA duplexes to subsequently hybridize with a new signal probe, leading to target recycling and signal amplification. As a result, the peak current caused by the electrostatic interactions of [Ru(NH3)6]3+ cations with the backbone of the probe DNA decreased by different degrees, corresponding to the Hg2+ concentrations. Under the optimum conditions, the proposed electrochemical DNA biosensor showed a robust detection limit as low as 1 pM (S/N = 3), with a wide linear range from 0.01 to 500 nM and good selectivity. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied to assay Hg2+ in real environmental samples.

Mercury pollution poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and public health due to its high toxicity and persistence, but there is still a lack of rapid and effective Hg(II) removal technology, especially emergency response of Hg(II) leakage. Herein, an effective metal-organic framework adsorbent, MOF-808-SH, was fabricated by grafting thioglycollic acid on MOF-808 for Hg(II) removal. The MOF-808-SH demonstrated high adsorption capacity of 977.5 mg/g, impressively ultrafast adsorption kinetics (C 0 = 10 mg/L, removal > 99 % in 10 s) with a rate constant k of 36.89 g mg −1 min −1 , which is dozens of times faster than that of ever reported Hg(II) adsorbents. Batch experiments show that MOF-808-SH exhibits high selectivity toward Hg(II) with a distribution coefficient K d as high as 5.0×10 6 mL/g. Moreover, MOF-808-SH exhibits excellent recyclability with a negligible loss of capacity after 6 adsorption-regeneration cycles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) unveil that the –SH groups in MOF-808-SH are the key adsorption sites, and specific inner-sphere coordination with Hg(II) is responsible for the high selectivity. In addition, large surface area, well-developed porous structures and high –SH loading of MOF-808-SH reasonably explains ultrafast kinetics and high adsorption capacity for Hg(II). This study indicates the potential of MOF-808-SH to remove Hg(II) from wastewater.

A simple and green method for the synthesis of fluorescent carbon nanospheres (CNs) was proposed using chrysanthemum as a natural precursor and ethylenediamine as the co-reagent. The prepared CNs show strong blue fluorescence in water with quantum yield of 13.7 %, and distinguished fluorescent stability against photobleaching and ion strength. Meanwhile, the fluorescence signal of CNs is reversible and sensitive to temperature in the range of 20–80 °C, which makes CNs useful as a temperature sensor. More importantly, the CNs can serve as excellent fluorescent sensors for detecting MnO 4 − and Hg 2+ with the detection limit of 0.72 and 0.26 μM, respectively. MnO 4 − quenches the fluorescence of CNs through inner filter effect and static quenching mechanism, while Hg 2+ forms a stable complex with the amino group on the surface of CNs, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of CNs. However, the stronger affinity between Hg 2+ and captopril (Cap) results in the fluorescence quenched by Hg 2+ recovery after the addition of Cap. Thus, the CNs-Hg 2+ system is employed as a novel sensitive and selective fluorescence “turn-on” sensor for Cap in the range of 0–75 μM. Inspired by the sensing results, the developed sensors were successfully used for the determination of MnO 4 − , Hg 2+ in river water samples and Cap in the pharmaceutical and urine samples.

Conjugated microporous poly(aniline)s (CMPAs) are an intriguing material platform for the selective capture of toxic heavy metal ions from water. However, the hydrophobic, monotonous N heteroatom and microporous properties limit their application scopes, particularly for the in-depth treatment requiring to a parts per billion (ppb) level. Herein, we report a novel chitosan-anchored CMPA (CMPA-CS), as designed through delicately exploiting the chitosan as either adsorption sites or pore templates for CMPA to acquire highly functionalized mesopores that could considerably facilitate Hg(II) adsorption. The CMPA-CS thus displayed excellently wide pH suitability (1.0–13.0), large capacity (862.1 mg g −1 ), ultrafast removal rate ( k 2 = 0.163 mg g −1 min −1 ), high affinity ( K d = 7.1 × 10 6 ), and strong anti-interference performance (selectivity of minimum 94.5% under the extreme influence of 100-fold-concentration cations). Besides, the Hg(II) concentration could be decreased from 0.578 ppm to less than 1.106 ppb in Minjiang river water substrates, below the EPR drinking water standards of 2 ppb. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the removal mechanism of Hg (II) was primarily a synergetic chelation reaction from the unique nitrogen ligands and O-containing groups, with the following features intensified: (i) good wettability to increase the interaction between CMPA and Hg(II) as contributed by the plentiful oxygen-containing groups; (ii) hierarchical mesopores that would promote ions transport efficiency as created by the chitosan. The new insight in this work can offer valuable guidelines for the design and structure optimization of CMPAs, facilitating its real-world commercial implementation.
