Wood-derived pore-rich carbon: A green catalyst for counter electrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells

Yaling Chai,Caichao Wan,Wenjie Cheng,Qi Zeng,Xuanze Li,Yiqiang Wu

Common Pt-based electrocatalysts have the disadvantages of high cost and easy deactivation. The research focus will be the development of carbon-based counter electrodes (CEs) due to the high conductivity and stability in the electrolytes. This paper prepares a kind of CE with wood-derived pore-rich carbon (WDPRC), which uses poplar as the precursor and activates with KOH at different temperatures (700, 800, and 900 °C). 800-WDPRC (800 represents temperature) had a large specific surface area of 1234.30 m 2 /g, which shows that it has a rich pore structure, and provides more active sites for the reaction. And the DSSCs’ PCE with 800-WDPRC (5.99%) is higher than the wood-derived carbon (WDC) (carbonize at 800 °C and without activation) (2.32%). As for the CEs’ materials, the WDPRCs’ manufacturing process is simple (only two steps), and the materials used are environment-friendly and low in price. Therefore, this paper provides a new idea for preparing clean and efficient DSSCs’ CEs.

Shell-like hierarchical porous carbons for high-rate performance supercapacitors

Xiaojun He,Zide Liu,Hao Ma,Nan Zhang,Moxin Yu,Mingbo Wu

Shell-like hierarchical porous carbons (SHPCs) were prepared from petroleum pitch by a nano-ZnO-template strategy coupled with in-situ KOH activation technique. The as-made SHPCs feature interconnected thin carbon shells and abundant short hierarchical pores, which are favorable for both the rapid transfer of electrons and ions during the charge-discharge process. The SHPCs made under optimal conditions show a specific surface area up to 2646 m 2  g −1 . As electrodes for supercapacitors , SHPCs exhibit a high specific capacitance up to 296 F g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte, good rate performance remaining at 237 F g −1  at 20 A g −1 and a good cycle stability with over 96.5% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. This work suggests a facile strategy for high-efficiency synthesis of SHPCs from petroleum pitch as electrode materials for supercapacitors and other energy stotage devices.

Synthesis of porous graphene-like carbon materials for high-performance supercapacitors from petroleum pitch using nano-CaCO3 as a template

Ming-jie Liu,Feng Wei,Xue-mei Yang,Shi-an Dong,Ying-jie Li,Xiao-jun He

Porous graphene-like carbon materials (PGCMs) for supercapacitors were synthesized from petroleum pitch by a nano-CaCO 3 template strategy combined with KOH activation. The PGCMs were characterized by TEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy and N 2 adsorption. Results show that their specific surface areas are 1542-2305 m 2 ·g −1 , depending on the template/pitch ratio, KOH/pitch ratio and activation temperature. The PGCMs feature interconnected graphene-like carbon layers with abundant small pores. The optimum supercapacitor electrode is produced when the PGCM is synthesized with a template/pitch ratio of 1.5, a KOH/pitch ratio of 1.5 at 850 °C for 1h. It has a specific capacitance of 293 F·g −1 at a current density of 0.05 A·g −1 , an excellent rate capability with a capacitance of 231 F·g −1 at a current density of 20 A·g −1 and an outstanding cycling stability with a 97.4% capacitance retention after 7000 cycles in a 6 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. It also exhibits a high specific capacitance of 267 F·g −1 at a current density of 0.05 A·g −1 , and a high energy density of 148.3 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 204.2 W·kg −1 in a BMIMPF6 ionic liquid electrolyte. This is a possible method for the synthesis of PGCMs for high-performance supercapacitors.

Removal of PFOA from water by activated carbon adsorption: Influence of pore structure

Zhiyuan Liu,Fan Yang,Tingting Zhai,Jianwei Yu,Chunmiao Wang,Zhengang Liu,Zhixue Liu,Yingxin Gao,Min Yang

Activated carbon (AC) adsorption is a practical process for the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in aquatic environments, but the relationship between its pore structure and adsorption performance is not well understood. In this study, the KOH-activated carbons (KACs) with different tailored pore structures were prepared, and presented a 2.61-fold higher adsorption capacity and a 2.21-fold higher adsorption rate than the raw AC. An in situ characterization method and a modified adsorption model were introduced to investigate the impact of pore size, which demonstrated that the ultra-micropores (<1.2 nm) and small mesopores (2.0–3.0 nm) contributed significantly to the adsorption of PFOA, with the highest mean contribution factor ( k ) of 0.45 and the second highest of 0.39, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that PFOA molecules tend to attach to the pore walls at various pore sizes. The adsorption of PFOA in the ultra-micropores was dominated by enhanced interactions due to the overlapping potentials of the bilateral pore walls (maximum of −567.32 Kcal·mol −1 ) and hydrophobic interactions. PFOA micelles or hemi-micelles could be formed in the small mesopores, allowing them to function as both the molecule transportation channels and strong adsorption sites. This study would guide the development of activated carbon tailored for the selective adsorption of PFOA from water.

Carbon dioxide adsorption performance of KOH-activated potato straw hydrochar: RSM and ML optimization, and mechanism insights

Huo Zhanpeng,Sui Zifeng,Zhang Zifeng,Lyu Qianmei,Hu Wenjie,Wu Yongfu,Li Ke

KOH-activated hydrochar (HC) prepared using biomass straw serves as a promising carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) adsorbent. However, numerous factors influence its preparation process, leading to significant variability in the adsorption performance of the resulting products. However, thoroughly understanding and optimizing this process remains challenging. In this study, a response surface method (RSM) and machine learning model were applied to predict the CO 2 adsorption capacity of potato straw active HC and analyze the influence of multiple factors on the CO 2 adsorption capacity. The results showed that the random forest (RF) model had a good predictive effect on the CO 2 adsorption effect of active HC, compared with the RSM model, based on the central composite design experimental dataset and additional experimental data. In addition, the hydrothermal carbonization temperature had the most significant influence on the CO 2 adsorption performance among various preparation factors, based on analysis of the RSM and RF models. Through experimental characterization and analysis, we found that with an increase in hydrothermal carbonization temperature, more biomass components would be decomposed, with the degree of carbonization increasing accordingly, forming a stable aromatic structure. Subsequently, more micropores would be generated following KOH activation, thus increasing the CO 2 adsorption performance of active HC.

Tobacco stem-derived activated carbon via KOH-ZnCl2 dual activation: hierarchical pore structure and enhanced supercapacitive performance

Hong Gu,Dekai Pan,Yiyang Li,Yuhan Bian,Yunjun Ruan

With the growing demand for sustainable energy storage devices, biomass-derived carbon materials have emerged as promising electrode candidates for supercapacitors due to their renewability, low cost, and environmental benignity. Tobacco stems, an abundant agricultural waste, are often underutilized, making their conversion into high-value carbon materials a critical focus for waste recycling and energy storage applications. Herein, a synergistic KOH-ZnCl 2 dual activation strategy was proposed to synthesize tobacco stem-derived activated carbons (TSACs), which precisely tailors the pore structure and defect density for enhanced electrochemical performance. Specifically, high-temperature KOH activation can etch the carbon framework to create numerous micropores, whereas ZnCl 2 has a weaker etching effect and produces only a limited number of micropores. Leveraging the synergistic etching effect of the KOH-ZnCl 2 dual-activator system, a hierarchically porous structure comprising both micropores and mesopores can be generated within the carbon material. The optimized TSAC-1 (with a mass ratio of TSC:KOH:ZnCl 2  = 1:4:1) possesses a well-developed honeycomb-like interconnected porous network, a high BET specific surface area of 3257 m 2 g −1 , and appropriate proportions of micropores (72.3%) and mesopores (26.7%), thus offering abundant active sites and efficient ion transport channels. Electrochemical tests show that the TSAC-1 electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 334 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , retains 218 F g −1 at 20 A g −1 (corresponding to a rate capability of 65.3%), and maintains 91.4% capacitance after 5000 cycles, demonstrating excellent performance and stability. The symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) based on TSAC-1 and 6 M KOH operates stably at 1.3 V, achieving a maximum energy density of 13.3 Wh kg −1 at 162.5 W kg −1 , retaining 6.4 Wh kg −1 at 3250 W kg −1 , and maintaining 95.76% capacitance after 11,000 cycles with Coulombic efficiency above 99%. These results validate that tobacco stem-derived activated carbons prepared by dual activation are high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, offering a sustainable approach to waste valorization and advancing the development of green energy storage systems.

Flexible and low temperature resistant double network alkaline gel polymer electrolyte with dual-role KOH for supercapacitor

Xiaoyi Hu,Lidan Fan,Gang Qin,Zhongshuo Shen,Juan Chen,Mengxiao Wang,Jia Yang,Qiang Chen

A green physical route for producing novel multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol/kappa-carrageenan alkaline gel polymer electrolyte is developed, which is based on double-network physical cross-linked hydrogel. The alkaline gel polymer electrolyte has excellent tensile stress (2.22 MPa), stretchability (12.43 mm/mm) and ionic conductivity (0.21 S/cm). In this study, KOH is served as not only ionic donator but also cross-linking agent. A supercapacitor is assembled from polyvinyl alcohol/kappa-carrageenan alkaline gel polymer electrolyte and activated carbon electrodes, which exhibits ideal electrochemistry behavior. The electrode specific capacitance is 470 F/g at 0.5 A/g, and retains above 95% after 2000 charge/discharge cycles. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor under different tensile deformations (≤200%), bending angles (0–230°) and temperatures (≥-40 °C) displays a slightly reduction, indicating that the supercapacitor possesses good flexibility and low temperature resistance. These findings are desirable for applications in supercapacitor devices of flexibility or low working temperature.

A high-performance KOH-modified steel slag adsorbent for efficient simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification: Mechanism and performance

Zifeng Xia,Ruiyang Li,Junhong Zhang,Lihua Gao,Zhijun He

To address the dual challenges of industrial steel slag disposal and flue gas pollution, a novel high-performance KOH-modified steel slag (KOH-SS) adsorbent was developed for the simultaneous removal of SO 2 and NOx. The adsorbent was synthesized via a thermal activation process, with the optimal performance achieved at a calcination temperature of 700 °C for 2 h with a 10% KOH loading. Under microwave-assisted adsorption conditions at 200 °C, the KOH-SS adsorbent exhibited exceptional efficiency, with breakthrough times (T 80% and T 50% ) of 31.88 min and 74.36 min for desulfurization and 16.88 min and 86.01 min for denitrification, respectively, significantly outperforming traditional calcium-based materials. Mechanistic analysis revealed that superior performance is rooted in a unique “destruction–reconstruction” process during preparation. The molten K 2 O derived from KOH dehydration aggressively erodes the inert silicate matrix, triggering the depolymerization of mineral phases and the subsequent regeneration of highly reactive “newborn” CaO active sites within a robust crystalline K 2 CaSiO 4 and amorphous gel framework. This structural metamorphosis creates a hierarchically porous architecture that facilitates strong synergy between rapid physical diffusion and intense chemisorption via acid–base neutralization and catalytic–oxidative pathways. This research demonstrates a sustainable “waste-to-wealth” strategy, providing a low-cost and highly efficient solution for the synergistic control of multiple pollutants in industrial flue gas.

Synergistic regulation of pore structure and oxygen functionalities in EtOH-KOH Co-activated biochar for I2 capture

Xuan Li,Yuchao Guo,Peifen Wang,Xiaowei An,Xuli Ma,Xin Chen,Yongguo Li,Xiaogang Hao,Abuliti Abudula,Guoqing Guan

Ethanol evaporation and KOH were firstly applied to co-activated biochar for Iodine Capture. • The obtained EKBC-200 had a high-surface-area and carboxyl-rich architecture. • I₂ capture of 2300 mg g⁻¹ with high stability was achieved at 200 ℃. • DFT analysis confirmed the key role of -COOH in stabilizing iodine molecules. In this study, a synergistic ethanol impregnation-KOH activation strategy was proposed to fabricate hierarchically porous biochar from pine cones, applied for the efficient capture of gaseous radioactive iodine. Systematic optimization of ethanol evaporation temperature as well as the KOH ratio revealed that EKBC-200 exhibited the highest surface area of 1285 m 2 g −1 with a micropore volume of 0.51 cm 3 g −1 , achieving an excellent I 2 uptake of 2300 mg g −1 . The desorption rate remained as low as 13%, and the capacity exceeded 1500 mg g −1 after five regeneration cycles, outperforming most reported sorbents. FTIR spectral changes (e.g., peak shifts or broadening) may provide supportive evidence for interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that ethanol pretreatment could effectively open blocked pores and introduce oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., -OH and -COOH). Subsequently, KOH activation generated abundant micro/mesopores and stabilized these oxygenated sites, resulting in a high-surface-area, carboxyl-rich structure favorable for I 2 adsorption. The grey relational analysis revealed that higher total and micropore volumes enhanced I 2 uptake, while the oxygenated surface groups strengthened I 2 retention. This work could offer an efficient and safe sorbent for radioactive I 2 capture from nuclear off-gas and provide a promising pathway for the high-value utilization of biomass. From lignite to supercapacitor carbon: tracking the role of ammonolysis atmosphere in stepwise carbonization and KOH activation

Wei Deng,Wei Yang,Linjing Hao,Daoguang Teng,Guixia Fan,Baolin Xing,Hongyan Nan,Peng Li,Yijun Cao

Ammonolysis atmosphere dictates N configuration beyond total N content. • N 2 atmosphere enriches active N-6/N-5 species while suppressing inert N-X species. • Stepwise synergy of N-engineering and KOH etching unlocks hierarchical pores. • Hierarchical porosity and active N species synergistically boost capacitance. Transforming low-grade lignite into functional carbon materials for energy storage is challenging because it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high nitrogen doping efficiency, well-developed porosity, and favorable nitrogen configurations. Here, we investigate the atmosphere-dependent mechanism of ammonolysis under N 2 , air, and O 2 and its synergistic coupling with subsequent carbonization and KOH activation for the preparation of nitrogen-doped porous carbon from Zhaotong lignite. Although O2 and air atmospheres produce higher total nitrogen contents, N 2 ammonolysis preferentially preserves electrochemically active N-6 and N-5 species, with relative contents of 19.64% and 20.64%, respectively, while suppressing the formation of electrochemically inactive N-X species to 6.22%. This chemical preconditioning is retained during carbonization and amplified by KOH activation, which exposes nitrogen sites, removes mineral impurities, and generates a hierarchical pore network containing ultra-micropores, micropores, mesopores, and macropores. The resulting KCZR N exhibits a high defect density ( I D /I G  = 1.0094), a specific surface area of 1003.8 m 2 /g, and abundant N-6/N-5 active sites. Consequently, the KCZR N electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 340.5 F/g at 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode system, with a rate capability of 55.3% retention and a cycling stability of 85.9% after 10,000 cycles. A symmetric supercapacitor assembled with KCZR N achieves an energy density of 12.1 Wh/kg at 249.9 W/kg. This work demonstrates the coupled effect between ammonolysis atmosphere and KOH activation, and provides a strategy for upgrading low-grade lignite into carbon electrodes for energy storage applications. High-performance symmetrical supercapacitor based on coal-derived porous carbon materials prepared via pyrolysis and KOH activation

Ren Fuyang,Zhu Hongze,Pan Haoran,Tian Lu,Wang Tao,Yu Jianglong,Dou Jinxiao,Wu Dongling,Chen Xingxing

The high value-added utilization of traditional coal resources is one of the important ways to achieve the strategic goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Simultaneously, coal-based carbon materials, noted for their cost-effectiveness, superior conductivity, and inherent stability, are emerging as promising candidates for next-generation capacitor technologies. This research presents a series of coal-derived porous carbon by pyrolysis using low rank lignite as raw material and KOH as activator, which are employed in symmetrical supercapacitors filled with liquid electrolytes. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared electrode materials are characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and their supercapacitive performance are evaluated through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge tests. The coal-based porous carbon electrode prepared at an activation temperature of 800 °C (KOH-800) exhibits a specific capacitance of 142.2 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , and retaining 80% of its capacitance (114.0 F g −1 ) even at 10 A g −1 . The fabricated liquid supercapacitor displays a power density of 999.8 W kg −1 and an energy density of 19.4 Wh kg −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Undergoing 10,000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , the supercapacitor maintains near-perfect capacitance retention and coulombic efficiency close to 100%, demonstrating its excellent durability and stability for supercapacitor applications.

FeCl3/KOH-modified digestate biochar for ciprofloxacin removal: Fe-O coordination-promoted adsorption mechanism and sustainability assessment

Zihao Wei,Qian Wu,Shiyu Fang,Xiang Zou,Ran Yu,Jiashun Cao,Lianghu Su,Weijing Liu,Song Cheng,Jingyang Luo

Digestate-derived biochar (BC) and an FeCl 3 /KOH-modified biochar (FKBC) were evaluated for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from nutrient-rich wastewater. FeCl 3 /KOH modification increased the specific surface area from 76.3 to 176.1 m 2 /g and introduced abundant oxygen-containing functional groups with dispersed Fe O coordination sites. Consequently, FKBC exhibited a Langmuir adsorption capacity of 117.93 mg/g, representing a 91.1% enhancement over pristine BC. Adsorption kinetics of FKBC were well described by the pseudo-second-order model (R 2  ≈ 0.99), with higher rate constants and initial adsorption rates, indicating accelerated chemisorption. FKBC further enabled simultaneous removal of ammonium and phosphate (∼60% at 20–120 mg/L). Adsorption was pH-dependent, favoring acidic conditions. XPS/FTIR analyses combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that CIP adsorption is primarily governed by inner-sphere Fe O coordination and carboxylate complexation, with carbonyl anchoring and π-π interactions contributing at higher surface coverage. Stable Fe 2p features before and after adsorption indicate reversible surface coordination without alteration of iron chemical states, supporting low iron-leaching risk. A ranking efficiency product (REP) analysis yielded an overall sustainability score of 85%, highlighting FKBC as an efficient and sustainable adsorbent for antibiotic remediation and resource-oriented digestate valorization.
