High performance and low process cost are two contradictory issues, which limited the commercial application of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO). Here, defects and TiO 2 co-enhanced LTO have been synthesized by a simple solid-state method. The crystal structure and morphology of the as-synthesized samples were characterized. The results show that the uniform nanoparticles with spinel structure contained defects and TiO 2 . Defects and TiO 2 co-enhanced LTO shows outstanding reversible discharge capacity of 168.2 mAh g −1 at 1 C after 500 cycles. Further, it presents a stability discharge ability of 155 mAh g −1 at 55 °C at 1 C after 500 cycles. The advanced electrochemical performance could be attributed to the defects and TiO 2 in LTO, which enhance conductivity and produce rich reaction interface, facilitating Li + ion diffusion kinetics. The as-synthesized LTO shows high performance in conjunction with low process cost.

Owing to their excellent structural superiorities of large storage space, high specific surface area and reduced volume expansion during battery charge and discharge cycles, 3D porous current collectors have received much concern in the anode of lithium-ion batteries. However, reasonable designing and efficient manufacturing of 3D porous copper foils as current collectors (PCFCCs) remain a great challenge due to the small thickness, soft texture, and variability of copper foils. These material characteristics make it hard to manufacture 3D micro-structure on copper foils and impede the practical application of lithium-ion batteries in more fields. Herein, an efficient and effective strategy is reported to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) electrodes via rationally designing and manufacturing 3D porous copper foils as current collectors. As a result, the 3D PCFCCs based LTO electrode displays low electrode polarization, excellent-cycle performance and ultra-high rate capacity. Moreover, the structures of various 3D PCFCCs are systematically studied for the first time, the design of 3D PCFCCs is optimized, and the mechanism of improving battery performance is explored. In addition, the proper micro-nano-pore-structures can facilitate electrolyte penetration and the solvated Li + transport, and the excellent Li + transmission ability of 3D PCFCCs is verified by simulation.

The in-situ carbon coated LTO composite (LTO/C-PR) is synthesized via a wet chemical method from the phenolic resin coated TiO 2 (TiO 2 /PR) and Li 2 CO 3 . The results indicate that the coated carbon layer pyrolyzing from phenolic resin exhibits higher degree of graphitization than that of pyrolyzing from glucose. The LTO/C-PR composite shows better rate capability and cyclic performance than the LTO/C-G composite using glucose as pyrolytic carbon source. Furthermore, it is found that the higher graphitization of carbon layer can more efficiently suppress the interfacial reactions between the LTO and the electrolyte at the cut-off voltages of 1–3 V. Moreover, the higher graphitization of carbon layer is also favorable to impede the deeper reduction decomposition of the electrolyte below 1.0 V by forming a more successive and thinner SEI film on the LTO electrode. These results indicate that coating the LTO with higher graphitization of carbon layer should be more preferable to solve both the rate capability and the gas generation behavior of the LTO anode material.

Robust hybrid porous bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with ultrafine Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded, are synthesized by a facile sol–gel process, combined with subsequent heat treatment. The nanohybrids exhibit a reversible capacity as high as 582.4 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 after 500 cycles, together with excellent rate capability and long-term cycling stability at high current densities. A high discharge capacity of 114.2 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1 is attained for up to 3000 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance of the nanohybrids is attributed to their structure rather than their composition. Their exceptional electrochemical performance benefits from the high electrical conductivity of the porous carbon matrix, which not only provides continuous three-dimensional electron transportation routes but also simultaneously solves the major problems of pulverization, loss of electrical contact, and particle aggregation of Li4Ti5O12 anode. In addition, the highly dispersive, ultrafine Li4Ti5O12 nanoparticles greatly shorten the diffusion paths for both electrons and ions. Such a structure not only preserves all the advantages of one-dimensional nanostructures, but also offers potential for a high packing density of electrode materials. Surely, this strategy can be widely extended to other anode materials.

The state-of-the-art water-in-salt electrolytes exhibit a wider electrochemical window than conventional dilute aqueous electrolytes. However, the extended electrochemical stability window via increasing the salt concentration has reached a bottleneck. An alternative approach is to effectively suppress H2O activity using multi-functional components. Here, we design an isolated water-in-salt solvation structure in aqueous electrolytes with the “hydrotropic” ionic liquid 1-methyl-1-propylpiperidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (PP13FSI). The addition of PP13FSI suppresses H2O clusters via the hydrophobic PP13+ cations and lithium-philic FSI− anions, showing a greatly extended electrochemical stability window up to 4.9 V. A robust alkaline-based organic–inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interface is achieved on a low-voltage Li4Ti5O12 anode, which further extends kinetics stability of aqueous electrolytes. Aqueous Li4Ti5O12‖LiMn2O4 full cells demonstrate stable cycling over 1000 cycles at 2C rate and a capacity retention of 70% with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.7%. This work provides new avenues to explore effective approaches for the development of next-generation highly stable aqueous lithium-ion batteries.

Currently, the development of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with improved areal capacity is still challenging. The common strategy to improve areal capacity is to increase the thickness of electrode materials. However, the application of thick electrodes remains challenge due to poor mechanical properties , slow charge and ion transport, and poor electrolyte infiltration . In this study, thick electrodes are constructed by 3D printing a Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 @VSe 2 -based ink. The highly electrical conductor VSe 2 on the Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 surface improves the ion and charge transport and eases the internal resistance of the 3D-printed electrode during charge and discharge. As a result, LIBs employing these thick electrodes show a high-rate capability of 128.9 mAh/g at 10 C, improved areal capacities up to 6.2 mAh/cm 2 , and ultrastable cycling capability (84.5% of capacity retention after 1700 cycles). Moreover, full cells utilizing 3D-Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 @VSe 2 as the anode and 3D-LiFePO 4 @AC/rGO as the cathode with 1.81 V potential yield a high specific capacity of 152.5 mAh/g at 0.1C, a high specific energy density of 276.025 Wh/kg, and a power density of 30.5 W/kg at 0.1C. This work paves the way to designing thick electrodes for high-performance LIBs.

Gel electrolyte composite with high areal capacity cathode effectively improves battery energy density and safety. Still, the insufficient interface contact between electrolyte and electrode limits the capacity release inside the thick cathode. Here, we rationally design a self-supporting cathode and use the in-situ polymerization method to integrate the gel electrolyte with the cathode. This cathode can effectively reduce the content of inactive electrode components. Meanwhile, the design of the regularly-arranged pore structure of the cathode introduced by laser texturing facilitates the penetration of the prepolymer solution and enables outstanding lithium-ion transport. Notably, the quasi-solid LiFePO 4 /Li half-cell with active material loading of 8 mg cm −2 exhibits good electrochemical performance (118.5 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2C at room temperature). Moreover, when the loading of active materials increases to 30 mg cm −2 , the LiFePO 4 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full-cell can still have a relatively high discharge capacity (105.9 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 0.2C at room temperature). It is worth noting that the quasi-solid pouch cell prepared by in-situ polymerization has a certain flexibility, indicating that this strategy has application potential in flexible electronic devices.
