Statistically Enriched Adjacent Cationic–Aromatic Motifs Enable Reversible Shear-Induced Gelation in Aqueous Polymer Solutions

Chen Yin An,Wang Xiaoyuan,Liao Hongguang,Fang Lulin,Li Xiang,Zhu Caizhen,Fan Hailong

Protein mechanical responses are governed not only by dynamic noncovalent interactions but also by their local sequence organization. Inspired by this principle, we study a hydrophobic polyelectrolyte with a statistically enriched neighboring distribution of cationic and aromatic monomers. In water, concentrated solutions of this polymer undergo reversible shear-induced gelation, transforming from viscous liquids into transient gel-like states under shear and recovering fluidity after the removal of stress. This transition depends strongly on concentration and shear rate, indicating a concentration-dependent entangled state that becomes increasingly susceptible to network formation under flow. A nonaromatic control polymer does not exhibit this behavior. In saline media, electrostatic screening drives the system into a salt-induced associated state, yet the reversible shear-induced transient gel-like transition persists. The gelation transition and the dimensions of rodlike aggregates both depend on the identity of the added alkali metal cation. Because this ion dependence follows the known aqueous cation−π competition trend, the results identify cation−π interactions as the dominant sequence-specific driving force. These findings show that statistical enrichment of neighboring cation–arene motifs can encode protein-like force responsiveness in synthetic polymers.

A copolymer binder with balanced mechanical properties for high-capacity Si/C anodes in lithium−Ion batteries

Meng Tian,Shijie Zhou,Yi Tian,Xuan Luo,Luhan Wang,Miaomiao Xu,Linlin Hu

Silicon-carbon composite material (Si/C) with high specific capacity is regarded as the most promising alternative to graphite and has been commercialized gradually. However, the practical implementation of Si/C anodes remains challenging due to electrode structure disintegration and interfacial instability induced by the substantial volume change of the internal Si-based particles. Herein, we synthesized a hydro-soluble binder with modulated mechanical properties by radical polymerization between acrylic acid (AA) as hard monomer and 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) as soft monomer simply for Si/C anodes. The as-developed binder exhibits the trade-off mechanical properties between elasticity and rigidness, excellent adhesivity and enhanced lithium-ion diffusion compared with PAA, which is conducive to accommodate the significant volume variation of Si/C during cycling and keeping the integrity of electrode structure. The Si/C anode with P(AA-co-MEA) binder manifests the improved cycling stability (502 mAh g −1 and 82.6% capacity retention rate after 500 cycles at 0.5C) and rate capability compared to that with PAA binder. This work offers valuable insights into the pursuit of high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with enhanced cycling stability.

A study on the multiscale mass transfer and desorption mechanisms of CO₂ capture using composite amine solutions under low-concentration flue gas conditions

Yuhan Guo,Zebiao Jiang,Yu Zheng,Bohan Xiao,Yunxia Zhao

This study evaluates the CO₂ capture performance and multiscale mechanisms of three tertiary amine–promoter blends: DEEA + PZ, DMEA + PZ, and DEEA + AMP. Spectroscopic characterization at 12 vol% CO₂ identified dominant reaction pathways, while cyclic performance was evaluated under simulated gas-fired power plant flue gas conditions (4 vol% CO₂, 95 °C regeneration). DMEA + PZ achieves a cyclic working capacity of 8.49 g CO₂/kg solvent—1.92 times that of the 30 wt% MEA benchmark—with a 48% reduction in relative regeneration energy consumption. In situ Raman and quantitative ¹H qNMR analyses show that all three systems operate predominantly via the bicarbonate pathway, with the PZ-carbamate decomposition rate considerably higher for DMEA + PZ (∼22%) than for DEEA + PZ (∼17%). AMP forms no detectable carbamate, relying exclusively on the bicarbonate pathway and exhibiting a discernible solvent volatilization trend. DFT calculations reveal that the stronger basicity of DEEA, arising from the inductive effect of its ethyl groups, yields higher absorption capacity but greater regeneration energy, whereas the narrower HOMO–LUMO gap of PZ enables rapid nucleophilic kinetics and the steric shielding of AMP precludes stable carbamate formation. Classical MD simulations show that compact PZ diffuses considerably faster than the sterically encumbered tertiary amines, while AMP-containing systems exhibit restricted diffusion; RDF analyses indicate steric shielding between the N centers of the main amine and promoter, with –OH-mediated hydrogen-bonding networks providing potential proton relay pathways. These insights offer a theoretical foundation for designing blended amine solvents for low-partial-pressure, waste-heat-driven CCUS applications.

Water-triggered microphase reconstruction enables anti-swelling ion transport in amphiphilic ionogels for adaptive multimodal sensing

Yu Zhang,Ruobing Tian,Xueming Tang,Zengguang Ji,Jiahao Liu,Xinli Wang,Guojun Deng,Bin Miao,Yuanna Sun,Hongyang Chen,Yongxing Wang

Water-triggered dynamic reconstruction overcomes conductivity-stability trade-off in ionogels. • Hydrophobic MEA chains form a protective surface barrier while ATU retains bulk ion channels. • The ionogel achieves 8.79 mS/cm conductivity, >4-month water stability, and 85 kPa wet adhesion. • It provides rapid thermal response (−2.54%/°C, 0.1 °C, 510 ms) and quantitative smoke sensing. • Wireless and underwater capabilities enable real-time physiological monitoring and Morse code. Ionogels are promising soft ionic conductors for flexible electronics, yet their operation in wet and underwater environments remains limited by a persistent trade-off between ionic conductivity and aqueous stability. Hydrophilic networks facilitate ion transport and interfacial adhesion but are prone to swelling and ion leakage, whereas hydrophobic networks resist water ingress at the cost of reduced ion mobility and poor compatibility with wet interfaces. Here, we report a water-triggered microphase reconstruction strategy for amphiphilic ionogels that converts water from a destructive medium into an active structural trigger. The ionogel is prepared by copolymerizing hydrophilic N-allylthiourea (ATU) and hydrophobic 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid matrix of [BMIm][TFSI]. Upon water exposure, hydration of ATU-rich regions strengthens hydrophilic-hydrophobic phase incompatibility, driving the rearrangement of PMEA segments toward the outer interface while retaining ionic-liquid-rich domains within the reconstructed network. This adaptive architecture forms a hydrophobic anti-swelling surface layer without sacrificing internal ion-conducting pathways. As a result, the reconstructed ionogel simultaneously achieves high ionic conductivity of 8.79 mS cm −1 , long-term stability for more than 4 months in water, and wet adhesion strength up to 85 kPa. Spectroscopic analysis, surface characterization, Raman mapping, density functional theory calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations collectively reveal the coupling between water-induced phase reconstruction, polymer-ion interactions, and enhanced ion mobility. Benefiting from these integrated properties, the ionogel functions as a robust multimodal sensing platform for underwater strain monitoring, Morse-code communication, high-resolution temperature sensing, wireless physiological monitoring, and smoke detection. This work establishes water-triggered microphase reconstruction as a molecular design principle for adaptive ionogels that require stable ion transport in complex aqueous and biointerfacial environments. Water-Triggered segmental reconstruction in the amphiphilic ionogel concurrently imparts anti-swelling capability and markedly enhanced conductivity. These integrated properties facilitate its application as a multimodal sensor for underwater communication, temperature, and smoke concentration detection. A novel ternary amine blend for efficient post-combustion CO2 capture: experimental screening and energy assessment

Huilin Li,Xuechong Ding,Teng Zhou

Reducing regeneration energy remains a central challenge in post-combustion CO 2 capture by chemical absorption. In this work, nine aqueous MDEA/DMEA/PZ blends were systematically screened using thermodynamic performance indicators, including the heat of absorption, heat capacity, and equilibrium CO 2 absorption capacity. Two formulations, D30P10 (30% DMEA +10% PZ) and M5D25P10 (5% MDEA +25% DMEA +10% PZ), were identified as the most promising candidates for achieving low regeneration energy. These two solvents were further evaluated against two benchmarks, 30 wt% MEA and M30P10 (30% MDEA +10% PZ), in cyclic absorption–desorption experiments. Among them, M5D25P10 delivered the best overall balance of stable cyclic performance and a cyclic capacity about 0.55 mol CO 2 /mol amine. Benefiting from its high cyclic capacity and low heat of absorption, this solvent achieved a regeneration energy of 2.98 GJ/t CO 2 , which was 21.2% and 4.5% lower than those of 30 wt% MEA and M30P10, respectively. Kinetic performance indicators, including the initial absorption rate ( r abs ini ) and the overall mass transfer coefficient ( K G ), were also evaluated, and M5D25P10 exhibited the highest mass transfer coefficient among all tested solvents. These results collectively confirm that M5D25P10 is a highly promising solvent for post-combustion CO 2 capture. Moreover, a robust empirical correlation between r abs ini and K G was established for the first time, providing a rapid and solvent-efficient means of estimating mass-transfer performance.

Rapid fabrication of stretchable, ultratough, and rigid polymer materials

Yuxuan Qiao,Kai Guo,Dongzhao Hao,Na Li,Xiaojiao Shi,Boyao Wang,Ya Liang,Tifeng Jiao,Junjie Li,Zhihui Qin

Polymer materials hold great promise for various applications but face trade-offs among stiffness, toughness, stretchability, and scalable fabrication. Here, we report a strategy that integrates dense side-chain hydrogen-bonding motifs capable of conformational transitions into a highly entangled flexible polymer network through photocuring copolymerization of acrylamide-based and hydroxyl-terminated acrylate monomers, enabling the rapid fabrication of stiff, tough, and stretchable polymers. The densely cross-linked structure restricts chain mobility, while hierarchical hydrogen bonds with partially low rotational energy barriers reversibly dissociate under strain, allowing the extensibility of the entangled network and continuous energy dissipation. The resulting polymers exhibit high Young’s modulus (515.0 ± 100.9 megapascals) and yield strength (57.8 ± 1.8 megapascals) while maintaining exceptional toughness (135.7 ± 10.7 megajoules per cubic meter) and fracture strain (400.1 ± 46.1%) and full strain recovery upon heating. These polymers can be fabricated into complex structures via three-dimensional printing and exhibit shape-memory, impact-resistant, and adhesive properties. This work establishes a generalizable strategy for designing high-performance polymer materials through simple photopolymerization.

The influence of TBAC additive on performance of electrochemically mediated amine regeneration

Zhengxiong Jiang,Zhitao Han

Electrochemical-mediated amine regeneration (EMAR) is a promising carbon capture technology. It uses an electrochemical process to regenerate amine solutions, replacing conventional thermal methods. This substitution significantly reduces the energy consumption and cost of amine-based CO 2 capture. However, challenges such as slow reaction kinetics and relatively high energy requirements have hindered its commercial adoption. In this work, these limitations are overcome for the first time by introducing additives into the EMAR electrolyte. The amine regeneration performance of mixed solutions incorporating five different additives including β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD), Trisodium phosphate (TSP), Glycine (Gly), 3-Mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (MPS), Tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) was systematically evaluated, and the mechanistic role of these additives in the electrochemical regeneration process was thoroughly investigated. Results indicate that TBAC serves as an effective additive that enhances the overall performance of monoethanolamine (MEA) solution within the EMAR system. In terms of CO 2 absorption, the MEA solution with TBAC outperformed those with other additives, achieving higher CO 2 loading capacity and faster absorption kinetics. Furthermore, electrochemical analyses revealed that the reduction of Cu 2+ is facilitated in the TBAC-modified MEA solution compared to other additive systems, while the anodic oxidation of metallic copper to Cu 2+ is also enhanced. Notably, the TBAC-modified MEA solution exhibited significantly improved CO 2 desorption performance. The measured desorption energy consumption for the TBAC system was lower, coupled with higher Faradaic efficiency. Specifically, at a current density of 100 A/m 2 , the desorption energy consumption was determined to be 19.48 kJ/mol CO 2 , demonstrating strong potential for industrial implementation of the EMAR process.

Ionic and adhesive triboelectric elastomer for normalizing charge polarity and density of contact electrification with general material

Siyao Qin,Xucong Wang,Hao Gong,Xiaoliang Li,Zifei Meng,Long Zheng,Ning Li,Zhong Lin Wang,Xiangyu Chen

Contact electrification (CE) is widely applied in microscale energy harvesting and active sensing. However, the CE results vary in charge density and polarity between different materials, while the preexisted charges on the surface make the CE process more unpredictable. Here, an adhesive triboelectric elastomer (ATE) is synthesized by combining the ionic liquids (ILs) and pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) to generate normalized charge polarity and density by CE. The ILs neutralize the preexisted charges on the targeted surface. Then, the adhesion groups of PSA bond to targeted surface and trigger the heterolytic cleavage, leaving negatively charged fragments on the targeted surface. This ATE is capable of generating stable charge density (−50 to −70 microcoulombs per square meter) on almost all the commonly used triboelectric materials, irrespective of the preexisted charges on the surface. The stable and normalized CE effect benefits all the triboelectric sensors and enables special functions, and this ATE design also deepens the understanding of CE and interface science.

Integrated Extraction and Structural Engineering of Chitin from Crayfish Shell Waste Using Alkaline Deep Eutectic Solvents Toward Facile Enzymatic Deacetylation

Shengyu Yang,Qingqing Xiao,Kaige Chen,Haojie Zhang,Jun Cai,Zexin Zhao

Development of green and efficient technologies for valorizing crayfish shell waste is crucial for enhancing industrial value. This study presents an integrated strategy for the extraction and structural engineering of chitin using a novel alkaline deep eutectic solvent (DES) system composed of lysine and monoethanolamine (LysMEA), which enables the simultaneous deproteinization and architectural modification of chitin. Following mild demineralization, the optimized process yielded chitin with 97.1% purity and a high molecular weight of 209.3 kDa. DES demonstrated considerable reusability and decolorization capability. Structural characterization revealed that the LysMEA system effectively engineered the chitin architecture, resulting in lower crystallinity and a larger surface area compared to conventional methods. This engineered structure rendered the chitin highly accessible to enzymes. Consequently, the chitin extracted by LysMEA exhibited superior reactivity, achieving a deacetylation degree of 63.7% when catalyzed byBacillus aryabhattaichitin deacetylase, significantly outperforming chitin obtained via acid-alkali or acidic DES methods. Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the mechanism, showing that lysine and monoethanolamine molecules penetrated the chitin fiber bundles at high temperatures, weakening interchain hydrogen bonds and partially separating the chains. This work provides a green route for producing enzymatically reactive chitin, demonstrating the potential of solvent-based structural engineering in biocatalytic valorization.

Enhancing energy efficiency in CO2-rich amine solution regeneration using a Cu-modified attapulgite catalysts

Dong Liu,Zelu Zhou,Zhitao Han,Mengjing Zhang,Aicheng Song,Xi Wu,Xiao Yang,Dong Ma

In recent years, significant attention has been drawn to the advancement of high-performance solid acid catalysts, which enhance the CO 2 desorption efficiency and concurrently lower energy requirements. Although solid acid catalysts show promise in reducing regeneration energy for amine-based CO 2 capture, achieving an optimal balance between activity, cost, and stability remains a major challenge. Herein a series of solid acid catalysts were prepared by modifying attapulgite (ATP) with various CuO x loading, and the effect of Cu modification on CO 2 desorption performance was compared systematically. The results showed that CO 2 desorption performance of the as-prepared catalysts was in an order of 2/1-CuO x /ATP >1/1-CuO x /ATP >3/1-CuO x /ATP > CuO > ATP. The CO 2 desorption capacity and rate were increased by 194 % and 205 %, respectively, the relative heat duty could be reduced by about 64.5 % by using 2/1-CuO x /ATP to regenerate the rich MEA solution. ATR-FTIR technique was employed to confirm the catalytic effect and a possible catalytic CO 2 desorption mechanism was suggested. Additionally, the catalyst maintained 81 % of its initial CO 2 desorption capacity after seven consecutive absorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent recoverability. This study provides a practical strategy for utilizing efficient, affordable and environmentally benign solid acid catalysts for CO 2 desorption, thereby advancing energy-efficient CO 2 capture technology.

Photothermal dual-cure 3D printing of mechanically robust microphase-separated hydrophobic ionic conductive elastomers

Shuqiang Peng,Yifan Xu,Yuheng Wang,Laiwen Cai,Zesheng Guo,Xianmei Huang,Weiqiang Chen,Longhui Zheng,Xiangfang Peng,Lixin Wu

Vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing has emerged as a transformative method for fabricating structurally tailored stretchable ionic conductors. However, developing hydrophobic ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) that simultaneously achieve high electrical performance, mechanical robustness, and environmental stability remains challenging. Herein, we present a photothermal dual-curing strategy to overcome this limitation by integrating a dynamic hindered urea bond-functionalized blocked polyurethane acrylate with a hydrophobic ionic liquid. The photocuring process induces microphase separation, forming continuous ion-conductive pathways that achieve high ionic conductivity (5.30 mS m −1 ) at a low ionic liquid loading of 30 wt%. Subsequent thermal annealing drives the formation of high-molecular-weight polyurethane/polyurea chains, creating a dynamic crosslinking-interpenetrating network that synergistically enhances tensile properties and resilience (tensile strength of 3.0 MPa, elongation of 1036 %, and 0.5 % residual strain at 50 % deformation). The resulting ICEs exhibit outstanding hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 112.3°) and anti-swelling stability. Using VPP 3D printing, we fabricate high-resolution architectured ICEs as sensors for real-time monitoring of finger movements and as soft actuators for underwater applications. Additionally, ICEs-based triboelectric nanogenerators with microstructured surfaces demonstrate stable and enhanced voltage output. This work establishes a universal paradigm for designing high-performance ICEs via additive manufacturing, advancing their applications in aquatic sensors and self-powered systems.

Pilot test and process modification of CO2 chemical absorption for top gas recycling-oxygen blast furnace

Ying Xie,Zhixiang Xia,Chao Li,Man Mou,Ximing Hu,Wei Chen,Xiaoming Xu,Yang Xia,Zihao Liu,Mengxiang Fang

The steel industry contributes approximately 7–9 % of global anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. Chemical absorption is a promising strategy for reducing steel industry carbon emissions. MAA, a novel amine blend primarily composed of methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and 2-(Piperazin-1-yl) ethanamine (AEP), exhibits potential but lacks industrial-scale validation. Focusing on the blast furnace (BF)-basic oxygen furnace steelmaking process, this study conducted pilot tests with MAA and 30 wt% MEA for BF gas (20 vol% CO 2 ) and top gas recycling-oxygen blast furnace (TGR-OBF) gas (35 vol% CO 2 ) and studied process modifications. The results showed that after 200 h of stable operation, MAA achieved optimal CO 2 capture from BF gas at a liquid-to-gas ratio of 8 L/Nm 3 , with a regeneration energy of 2.47 GJ/t CO 2 , compared to 3.78 GJ/t CO 2 for 30 wt% MEA. MAA achieved a regeneration energy of 1.81 GJ/t CO 2 for TGR-OBF gas, 26.72 % lower than that for BF gas. Absorber intercooling reduced regeneration energy by 8.86 %. Among the process modifications, directing 10 % of the rich solution to a flash evaporator for semi-lean solution recycling back to the middle of the absorber, with the remaining 90 % undergoing thermal regeneration in the stripper, demonstrated the lowest regeneration energy for TGR-OBF. This modification reduced MAA regeneration energy by 5.52 %. Additionally, two-stage water scrubbing effectively controlled amine emissions from the 10 Nm 3 /h pilot plant, reducing MAA emissions to 17.83 mg/Nm 3 after the second stage. MAA exhibited excellent adaptability to BF and TGR-OBF gases, achieving 90 % CO 2 removal efficiency with a minimum regeneration energy of 1.71 GJ/t CO 2 . The findings highlight the potential for the large-scale application of MAA in the steel industry to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions.
