In this study, a MgH 2 –Ru composite is prepared by mechanical ball milling of MgH 2 and Ru powders. The microstructural analysis revealed the uniform distribution of Ru nanoparticles in the MgH 2 matrix and the formation of intermetallic compounds (i.e. Mg 6.2 Ru and Mg 1.5 Ru) after dehydrogenation of the composite. The substantial improvements in the de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 are due to the adjustable catalytic role of Ru under low temperature and pressure conditions. MgH 2 –Ru composite started to release hydrogen at an onset temperature of 300 °C, much lower than the mechanically milled pure MgH 2 (350 °C). Hydrogen absorption of the MgH 2 –Ru composite is relatively fast at 350 °C and stored 6.1 wt% in 5 min. At the same temperature, the hydrogenated MgH 2 –Ru composite released all stored hydrogen in less than 5 min. Compared with the catalyst-free MgH 2 , the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activation energies of the MgH 2 –Ru composite are reduced to 65.12 ± 2.4 kJ/mol H 2 , and 97.46 ± 4.15 kJ/mol H 2 , respectively. In addition, it further demonstrated how the reversible transformation of Mg–Ru intermetallic phases induces the thermodynamic destabilization of the MgH 2 system. The presence of Ru not only facilitated the breaking of the Mg–H bond but also provided very good catalytic interfaces for enhanced de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 .

In the present work, three kinds of γ-MnS with different morphologies were prepared by solvothermal method and employed to improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . It was found that spherical γ-MnS had the best catalytic activity. The influences of γ-MnS content and milling time on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 were investigated. The initial hydrogen release of MgH 2 -5(γ-MnS)-5 h composite started at 241 ℃, 4.61 wt% of hydrogen was desorbed within 20 min at 270 ℃, and 4.24 wt% of hydrogen was absorbed within 10 min at 150 ℃. The apparent activation energies of hydrogen absorption and desorption of MgH 2 -5(γ-MnS)-5 h composite decreased to 45.1 and 63.6 kJ/mol, respectively. In addition, the composite also exhibited good cycle performance, which could keep stable in 60 cycles. The results of SEM and TEM declared that the catalyst was uniformly distributed on the matrix during the cycling process, and the worm-like morphology of the sample also had a positive effect on the stability of kinetics. XPS analysis of Mn 2p in the samples showed that only characteristic peaks of γ-MnS 2p were observed in the ball-milled samples, but the characteristic peaks of Mn 2p and α-MnS 2p were observed in the first and tenth hydrogenated samples, while only the peaks of Mn 2p were observed in the sixtieth hydrogenated sample. The formation of Mn not only greatly weakened the Mg-H bond, but also led to a slight increase in cycle capacity. Therefore, γ-MnS-doped MgH 2 manifested a good comprehensive hydrogen storage performance.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ), which possesses high hydrogen density of 7.6 wt%, abundant resource and non-toxicity, has captured intense attention as one of the potential hydrogen storage materials. However, the practical application of Mg/MgH 2 system is suffering from high thermal stability, sluggish absorption and desorption kinetics. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) vanadium nanosheets (V NS ) were successfully prepared via a facile wet chemical ball milling method and proved to be highly effective on improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . For instance, the MgH 2 + 7 wt% V NS composite began to release hydrogen at 187.2 °C, 152 °C lower than that of additive-free MgH 2 . At 300 °C, 6.3 wt% hydrogen was released from the MgH 2 + 7 wt% V NS composite within 10 min. In addition, the fully dehydrogenated sample could absorb hydrogen even at room temperature under hydrogen pressure of 3.2 MPa. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed metallic vanadium served as catalytic unit for facilitating the de/rehydrogenation reaction of MgH 2 . This finding presents an example of facile synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) vanadium with excellent catalysis, which may shed light on future design and preparation of highly effective layered catalysts for hydrogen storage and other energy-related areas.

Two-dimensional vanadium carbide (V2C) and titanium carbide (Ti3C2) MXenes were first synthesized by exfoliating V2AlC or Ti3AlC2 and then introduced jointly into magnesium hydride (MgH2) to tailor the hydrogen desorption/absorption performances of MgH2. The as-prepared MgH2–V2C–Ti3C2 composites show much better hydrogen storage performances than pure MgH2. MgH2 with addition of 10 wt % of 2V2C/Ti3C2 initiates hydrogen desorption at around 180 °C; 5.1 wt % of hydrogen was desorbed within 60 min at 225 °C, while 5.8 wt % was desorbed within 2 min at 300 °C. Under 6 MPa H2, the dehydrided MgH2–2V2C/Ti3C2 can start to recover hydrogen at room temperature, and 5.1 wt % of H2 is obtained within 20 s at a constant temperature of 40 °C. The reversible capacity (6.3 wt %) does not decline for up to 10 cycles, which shows excellent cycling stability. The addition of 2V2C/Ti3C2 can remarkably lower the activation energy for the hydrogen desorption reaction of MgH2 by 37% and slightly reduce the hydrogen desorption reaction enthalpy by 2 kJ mol–1 H2. It was demonstrated that the combination of V2C and Ti3C2 promotes the hydrogen-releasing process of MgH2 compared with addition of only V2C or Ti3C2, while Ti3C2 impacts MgH2 more significantly than V2C in the hydrogen absorption process of MgH2 at ambient temperatures. A possible mechanism in the hydrogen release and uptake of the MgH2–V2C–Ti3C2 system was proposed as follows: hydrogen atoms or molecules may preferentially transfer through the MgH2/V2C/Ti3C2 triple-grain boundaries during the desorption process and through the Mg/Ti3C2 interfaces during the absorption process. Microstructure studies indicated that V2C and Ti3C2 mainly act as efficient catalysts for MgH2. This work provides an insight into the hydrogen storage behaviors and mechanisms of MgH2 boosted by a combination of two MXenes.

2LiBH 4 −MgH 2 (Li-RHC) is a potential hydrogen storage candidate with a capacity of 11.5 wt.%. However, its further application is severely limited by the long nucleation induction period and poor reversibility of end-product. Unlike the traditional focus on the catalytical role of cation, herein, a new perspective of previously ignored anion tuning has been proposed, in which S 2− bridges the reversible conversion between Li 2 S and MgS during de-/hydrogenation cycling of Li-RHC. Such conversion not only enhances the migration of Li + , leading to the rapid destabilization of B─H bonds without obvious nucleation period of MgB 2 , but also improves the cycling stability of Li-RHC with capacity retention over 90% even after 50 cycles. The universal of this anion modulation has been verified, along with the matching criteria of the corresponding transition metal cation. The results highlight the contribution of anion, push anion modulation from back to stage and eventually broaden the selection of catalysts for Li-RHC.

Ni-loaded Ce/Nb oxide catalysts (CeNb-x%Ni) were prepared and ball-milled with MgH 2 under H 2 to investigate the effects of Ni loading on sorption kinetics. The results reveal that the 40%Ni catalyst featured the most balanced behavior. MgH 2 -10%(CeNb-40%Ni) absorbed 5.516 wt% H 2 within 1 min at 350 °C and released approximately 5.6 wt% H 2 within 30 min after hydrogenation. At 150 °C, it still absorbed 3.54 wt% H 2 in 6.5 min and reached 4.921 wt% after 30 min. TPD and DSC curves suggest that the onset and main release temperatures moved to lower values, while kinetic analysis presented a much smaller apparent dehydrogenation barrier. XPS indicates the presence of Mg-H-related species, metallic/interfacial and oxidized Ni species, Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ surface states, and Nb 5+ /Nb δ⁺ -related components. These surface states, together with the refined particles and crack/pore-rich surface produced during milling and cycling, may facilitate hydrogen transfer across the MgH 2 /catalyst interface. Thus, an appropriate Ni amount in a Ce/Nb oxide matrix is important for accelerating MgH 2 absorption and desorption.

Magnesium-based biomaterials show great potential in bone regeneration due to their inherent biocompatibility, osteogenic activity, and ability to modulate the immune microenvironment. However, their rapid degradation rate remains a critical barrier to clinical translation. To address these challenges, we developed a magnesium hydride-gelatin methacryloyl (MgH 2 -GelMA) composite with sustained release of hydrogen gas and magnesium ions, featuring a bone-mimetic organic–inorganic hybrid network. First, magnesium hydride microcrystals were coated with an inorganic silica layer to mitigate degradation; subsequently, the coated particles were embedded within an organic GelMA hydrogel matrix. The composite achieves controlled co-release of magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) and hydrogen gas (H 2 ). The released Mg 2+ directly stimulates the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into osteoblasts, accelerating osteogenesis. Concurrently, Mg 2+ and H 2 synergistically induce polarization of bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype. During the active inflammatory phase, this polarization modulates the immune microenvironment and establishes a pro-regenerative local niche. This study not only elucidates a novel ion-gas synergistic mechanism but also provides innovative insights and theoretical foundations for advancing artificial bone materials from passive biomimetic replacement to active regenerative modulation.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising hydrogen storage material for high hydrogen density, but its application is hindered by sluggish kinetics. Herein, a NiCo alloy was synthesized via hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . The MgH 2 +7 wt% NiCo system exhibits a starting desorption temperature of 211 °C and a dehydrogenation activation energy of 82.47 kJ/mol, and the dehydrogenated product absorbs 5.49 wt% H 2 in 1 min at 120 °C. Moreover, this system shows a 6.9 wt% hydrogen with 95.2% retention after 20 cycles, exhibiting exceptional cycling stability. The enhanced hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 stems from the synergistic effects of structural regulation and electronic modulation. In-situ formed Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 acts as a “hydrogen pump” to provide hydrogen transport pathways, while electronic interactions between Ni and Co facilitate H 2 dissociation and diffusion. This research offers valuable perspectives for designing transition metal-based additives for solid-state hydrogen storage.

MgH 2 is widely considered a great potential solid hydrogen storage material along with hydrogen energy and is recognized as a kind of renewable energy. However, its poor hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics and high thermodynamic stability limit its application. In this work, CeO 2 @NC (Nano-Carbon supported CeO 2 particles) nanosphere catalysts were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method, and the particle size of CeO 2 was about 7 nm and MgH 2 + x wt.% CeO 2 @NC ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) composites were prepared by ball milling. It was found that the generation of oxygen vacancy defects and the multivalent environment of carbon-supported Ce can play the role of hydrogen pump and synergistically catalyze MgH 2 . Adding a carbon layer prevents nano-effect generation to a certain extent, which makes H atoms diffuse rapidly. The results show that MgH 2 + 6 wt.% CeO 2 @NC can release 5.89 wt.% H 2 in 50 min at 593 K, and MgH 2 without catalyst can only release 0.31 wt.% H 2 . As the amount of catalyst added increases, the dehydrogenation activation energy of the composite material decreases by 31.11 kJ/mol H 2 . Through density functional theory calculation, it was found that the adsorption energy of the material increased by 1.21 eV after the addition of the catalyst, and the Fermi level of the density of states of the composite increased, which accelerated the electron transfer rate. This study can help workers catalytically modify the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Introducing oxygen vacancy defects in carbon-based supported multivalent transition metal oxide catalysts gives them a unique electronic structure and excellent catalytic activity.

MgH 2 shows promise for solid-state hydrogen storage because of its high gravimetric capacity (7.6%) and ecofriendliness but cannot be easily commercialized because of its sluggish dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation kinetics and high thermodynamic stability. Herein, Ce/N–codoped TiO 2 (CN-T) synthesized using a solvothermal/calcination method was composited with MgH 2 to enhance its hydrogen storage performance. The composite with a CN-T loading of 7 wt% started releasing H 2 at 187.2 °C and released 6.45 wt.% H 2 in 180 s at 301 °C, which corresponded to nearly complete dehydrogenation. The residue could be rapidly rehydrogenated, with hydrogen contents of 3.24 and 5.45 wt% achieved in 1 min at 100 °C/20 bar H 2 and 5 min at 200 °C/20 bar H 2 , respectively. This performance enhancement was attributed to the combined effects of doped N, multivalent Ti, and Ce. The doped N weakened Mg–H bonds via charge transfer and modified the electronic state density of MgH 2 . Ti catalyzed H 2 dissociation/recombination through dynamic valence cycling and D-electron injection, and the introduction of Ce 3+ created O vacancies, which lowered the electron density of Mg–H bonds, generated strain fields for hydrogen release, provided diffusion pathways, and introduced bandgap states to strengthen electron–hydrogen coupling. Thus, this study paves the way for the commercialization of MgH 2 as a green high-capacity hydrogen carrier for diverse applications.

Magnesium hydride has been seen as a potential material for solid state hydrogen storage , but the kinetics and thermodynamics obstacles have hindered its development and application. Three-dimensional flower-like TiO 2 @C and TiO 2 were synthesized as the catalyst for MgH 2 system and great catalytic activities are acquired in the hydrogen sorption properties. Experiments also show that the flower-like TiO 2 @C is superior to flower-like TiO 2 in improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The hydrogen desorption onset and peak temperatures of flower-like TiO 2 doped MgH 2 is reduced to 199.2 °C and 245.4 °C, while the primitive MgH 2 starts to release hydrogen at 294.6 °C and the rapid dehydrogenation temperature is even as high as 362.6 °C. The onset and peak temperatures of flower-like TiO 2 @C doped MgH 2 are further reduced to 180.3 °C and 233.0 °C. The flower-like TiO 2 @C doped MgH 2 composite can release 6.0 wt% hydrogen at 250 °C within 7 min, and 4.86 wt% hydrogen at 225 °C within 60 min, while flower-like TiO 2 doped MgH 2 can release 6.0 wt% hydrogen at 250 °C within 8 min, and 3.89 wt% hydrogen at 225 °C within 60 min. Hydrogen absorption kinetics is also improved dramatically. Moreover, compared with primitive MgH 2 and the flower-like TiO 2 doped MgH 2 , the activation energy of flower-like TiO 2 @C doped MgH 2 is significantly decreased to 67.10 kJ/mol. All the improvement of hydrogen sorption properties can be ascribed to the flower-like structure and the two-phase coexistence of TiO 2 and amorphous carbon . Such phase composition and unique structure are proved to be the critical factor to improve the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH 2 , which can be considered as the new prospect for improving the kinetics of light-metal hydrogen storage materials.

Magnesium hydride serves as a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material owing to its high potential. However, its practical applications are constrained by the high enthalpy of hydrogen absorption and slow kinetics. In this study, we prepared a Ni/Ti 3 O 5 @graphene oxide (GO) dual-heterojunction composite material via solvent heating, electrostatic adsorption, and calcination to improve the hydrogen storage capabilities of MgH 2 . Adding Ni/Ti 3 O 5 @GO to MgH 2 lowered the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 183 °C; at a dehydrogenation temperature of 275 °C, 6.4 wt.% of H 2 escaped from the MgH 2 bulk. In addition, the hydrogen storage material absorbed 1.8 wt.% H 2 at 30 °C for 30 min. The calculated activation energy of dehydrogenation was 48.221 ± 0.141 kJ·mol −1 , which was significantly lower than that of the ball-milled MgH 2 (112.63 ± 1.44 kJ·mol −1 ). Mechanistic analysis results revealed that the heterojunction constructed from the multiphase compound system provided a large number of active sites and hydrogen diffusion routes, resulting in a synergistic catalytic effect that enhanced the hydrogen storage capacity of MgH 2 . In this work, we clarified the compositions of fuzzy interfaces in heterostructured materials by conducting ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy tests and identified key composite materials for the formation of heterojunctions.
