To form Microcystis blooms, Microcystis must be competitively dominant to other phytoplankton species to produce enough biomass. The aim of this study was to determine the competition mechanisms between Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus . M. aeruginosa and S. obliquus were separately cultured in the filtrate of mono and mixed cultures of M. aeruginosa and S. obliquus with varying treatments concerning N, P and iron availability. The inhibition rate for M. aeruginosa was 20–31% when cultured in mono and mixed culture filtrates enriched with N and P, but this rate was reduced to −15 to 19% when cultured in filtrates enriched with N, P and iron. The inhibition rate for M. aeruginosa decreased from 80 to 100% to 11–39% in dialytic filtrates. However, there were no differences in inhibition rate for S. obliquus, regardless of filtrate or dialytic filtrate treatments. The potential allelochemical, 2-butyl-octanol (0.144 mg L −1 ), was found to have little inhibitory effect to M. aeruginosa or S. obliquus . Thus, previously reported allelopathy to Microcystis would be overestimated. We also report a new mechanism in phytoplankton competition in this study. The phytoplankton secreted humic acid-like substances that can reduce the bioavailability of iron, resulting in the inhibition of other phytoplankton.

Environment-friendly algaecides based on allelopathy have been extensively studied to control harmful algal blooms (HABs). The inhibitory effects of linoleic acid (LA) sustained-release microspheres on different cell densities of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) at different growth phases were studied. The results showed that the growth of M. aeruginosa could be inhibited within 4 days and the constant inhibitory rate with initial algal density of 8 × 10 5 cells∙mL −1 (exponential phase) was up to 96% compared with control. The chlorophyll-a content in the treatment group had the same change trend with the algal density and declined significantly at day 20th, which suggested that the microspheres could promote the degradation of chlorophyll-a. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) increased gradually within 5 days but then declined sharply, which indicated that LA microspheres could cause oxidative damage to M. aeruginosa during the process of inhibition and reduce the activities of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, the concentration of oxygen free radical (O 2 − ) increased at day 10th and rose constantly, and the content of malodialdehyde (MDA) increased to 2.7 times as much as control at day 20th. Furthermore, the content of protein, nucleic acid and the conductivity in culture solution showed a significant rise. These results showed that algal cell membrane lipid peroxidation occurred and the membrane permeability increased, accompanied by the damage of cell membrane. To sum up, the destruction of algal cell membrane is the main mechanism of LA microspheres inhibiting algal growth.

Cyanobacterial blooms cause serious environmental issues , and plant secondary metabolites are considered as new algaecide for controlling them. Cinnamomum camphora produces a wide spectrum of terpenoids and has 4 main chemotypes, including linalool, camphor , eucalyptol and borneol chemotype. To develop the new cyanobacterial algaecide by using suitable chemotype of Cinnamomum camphora and the main terpenoids, we analyzed the terpenoid composition in the 4 chemotype extracts, evaluated the algicidal effects of the extracts and their typical monoterpenoids on Microcystis aeruginosa , and investigated the algicidal mechanism of the stronger algicidal agents. Among the 4 chemotypes, eucalyptol and borneol chemotype extracts exhibited stronger algicidal effects. In the 4 chemotype extracts, monoterpenoids were the main compounds, of which linalool, camphor, eucalyptol and borneol were the typical components. Among the 4 typical monoterpenoids, eucalyptol and borneol showed stronger algicidal effects, which killed 78.8% and 100% M. aeruginosa cells, respectively, at 1.2 mM after 48 h. In 1.2 mM eucalyptol and borneol treatments, the reactive oxygen species levels markedly increased, and the caspase-3-like activity also raised. With prolonging the treatment time, M. aeruginosa cells gradually shrank and wrinkled, and the cell TUNEL fluorescence intensity and DNA degradation gradually enhanced, indicating that the lethal mechanism is causing apoptosis-like programmed cell death (PCD). Therefore, eucalyptol and borneol chemotype extracts and their typical monoterpenoids have the potential for developing as algaecides to control cyanobacteria through triggering apoptosis-like PCD.

Global warming has increased the frequency of Microcystis aeruginosa blooms, leading to the deterioration of water quality and loss of biodiversity. Therefore, developing effective strategies for controlling M. aeruginosa blooms has become an important research topic. Plant extracts, 4‑tert-butylpyrocatechol (TBC) and tea polyphenol (TP) are commonly used for water purification and to increase fish immunity, which have great potential to inhibit cyanobacterial blooms. The inhibitory effects of TBC and TP on M. aeruginosa were investigated in terms of growth characteristics, cell membrane morphology, physiological, photosynthetic activities, and antioxidant enzymes activities . The results showed that TBC and TP inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa by decreasing the chlorophyll fluorescence transients or increasing the antioxidant enzymes activities of M. aeruginosa . TBC damaged the cell morphology of M. aeruginosa , reduced extracellular polysaccharides and protein contents, and up-regulated the antioxidant activity-related gene ( sod and gsh ) expressions of M. aeruginosa . TP significantly decreased the photosynthetic pigment content, influenced the phycobiliprotein content, and strongly down-regulated the photosynthesis-related gene ( psbA, psaB, and rbcL ) relative expressions of M. aeruginosa . TBC caused significant oxidative stress , dysfunction of physiological metabolic processes, and damaged crucial biomacromolecules (e.g., lipids, proteins and polysaccharides), prompted the loss of cell integrity, ultimately leading to the death of M. aeruginosa . However, TP depressed photosynthetic activities and consequently inhibited the transfer of electrons, affected the electron transfer chain , decreased the photosynthetic efficiency , and eventually caused the death of M. aeruginosa cells. Our study showed the inhibitory effects and algicidal mechanisms of TBC and TP on M. aeruginosa , and provide a theoretical basis for restrain the overgrowth of M. aeruginosa .

Single exposure toxicity tests of herbicides like prometryn are commonly applied in studying ecological and environmental issues, but they are more likely exposed to microalgae through multiple applications of irrigation and water flow. The toxicity of prometryn towards Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) at different growth stages (different exposure period) was determined by single and multiple exposures (different exposure mode) through 39-day batch-experiment comparison study. Inhibition rates showed that M. aeruginosa growth was greatly inhibited by exposure to prometryn in a final concentration of 80 and 160 μg·L −1 ( p < 0.05). Specifically, with the same prometryn exposure periods (lag or exponential phase) and concentrations, a single exposure displayed larger toxicity on M. aeruginosa than repetitive additions of prometryn in general according to inhibition rates. Moreover, with the same prometryn exposure modes and concentrations, inhibitory effect was higher with prometryn exposure in lag phase than that in exponential phase according to M. aeruginosa densities and inhibition rates. In general, variations of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) with time responded negatively to M. aeruginosa growth, and added prometryn inhibits the utilization rate of both P and N. Logistic function was well used to describe algae densities ( R 2 = 0.979 ~ 0.995), growth rates ( R 2 = 0.515 ~ 0.731), specific growth rates ( R 2 = 0.301 ~ 0.648) and inhibition rates ( R 2 = 0.357 ~ 0.946) along with its combination with Monod function. In addition, results showed that shifts of limiting nutrients could be prompted by not only M. aeruginosa growth but also prometryn exposure scenarios. This study provides a basis for studying the potential harm of prometryn to the ecological environment.

Flavonoids , common natural polyphenolic compounds from plants, have been proposed as highly effective and safe algicides. However, the molecular mechanism of flavonoids inhibiting Microcystis aeruginosa remains unclear. This study aims in exploring the global transcriptional changes and molecular docking in cyanobacterial cells in response to flavonoids. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that 5,4′-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) primarily affected the genes transcription of iron and zinc ion transport, resulting in the blockage of transport for iron (II), iron (III) and zinc (II), which eventually led to a decrease in intracellular iron and zinc content. 5,4′-DHF can also interfere with iron and zinc transport by binding to metal ion transport-related proteins, leading to eliminated biological activities in M. aeruginosa . Meanwhile, 5,4′-DHF inhibit microcystin synthesis and reduce the content of intercellular toxin by inhibiting the transcription of mcy C and binding with McyC protein, implying that 5,4′-DHF have potential to reduce the risk of microcystins in the environment. Moreover, iron starvation and down-regulation of photosynthesis-related genes transcription led to the inhibition of electron transport in photosynthetic system. These results provide more information for the inhibitory mechanism of flavonoids, and the inhibition of flavonoids on metal ion transmembrane transport provides a new perspective for the development of allelochemical algicides.

The enrichment efficiency during the high-value conversion of carbon dioxide still presents certain limitations in practical applications. Iron-cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, which exhibit lower toxicity to Microcystis aeruginosa , have been successfully introduced into microalgae solutions to address the issue of low CO 2 concentration in interfacial reactions. When 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid was employed as an organic ligand under synthesis conditions of 130°C, pH 3.5, and a reaction time of 15 h, the resulting MOF exhibited a CH₄ yield of 92.6 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ in the photocatalytic system at room temperature (25°C). The combination of Microcystis aeruginosa with the optimal Fe-Co-MOFs system achieved a selectivity of up to 96.1 % in converting CO 2 into CH 4 . When Microcystis aeruginosa was cultured in a modified medium with a pH of 6.78 and 5 mg of NDC-T130 at 25°C for 12 h, an OD 600 of 0.192 ± 0.01 was observed. The CH₄ yield from the Microcystis aeruginosa -NDC-T130 co-culture composite system was 1.46 times that of the Fe-Co-MOFs. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that carbon dioxide molecules preferentially adsorb on the crystal surfaces of (CoFe 2 )O 4 (113) and (Co 0.457 Fe 0.543 )(Co 1.543 Fe 0.457 )O 4 (311), with the Co site being more likely to serve as the reactive site for CO 2 photoreduction to CH 4 within the Fe-Co-MOFs. Transcriptome analysis demonstrates that MOFs enhance the dark reactions of microalgae and facilitate further CO 2 fixation for photosynthesis and electron transfer, which are crucial for improving the high-value CO 2 conversion efficiency of this system. This strategy provides both experimental and theoretical support for iron-based MOFs as photocatalytic materials, regardless of CO 2 concentration.

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are a serious problem worldwide. Allelochemicals from natural plants were recently thought to be promising anti-algaecide in controlling harmful algae. However, the programmed cell death (PCD) process of algae under allelopathic pressure induced by 5,4′-dihydroxyflavone (5,4′-DHF) was poorly understood. In this study, two common and worldwide distributed microalgae, Microcystis aeruginosa and Phaeocystis globosa were selected as target algae, and the PCD processes induced by 5,4′-DHF were cross-compared between the two species. Both algae species were inhibited significantly by 5,4′-DHF with the relative sensitivity of 0.11. To uncover the PCD progress systematically, signals for PCD triggering, antioxidant enzyme activity, photosynthetic ability variation, caspase-like activities and typical indicators were investigated. In both species, typical indicators of PCD – phosphatidylserine externalization and chromatin condensation – were detected. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and H 2 O 2 were the potential signal molecules to stimulate PCD, and caspase-like activities were activated with an elevation of cytochrome c indicating the initiation of PCD in both species. However, P. globosa responded to 5,4′-DHF immediately after 3 h with the elevation of ROS and not in M. aeruginosa . Antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in M. aeruginosa and P. globosa also showed different patterns on day 3. Specifically, SOD activity in M. aeruginosa increased significantly while it decreased significantly in P. globosa , CAT activity in M. aeruginosa decreased significantly while it increased significantly in P. globosa ( p < 0.05). Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in P. globosa increased significantly ( p < 0.001) while it showed no variation in M. aeruginosa . Overall, this study is one of the earliest studies to explore the inhibition and action mechanism of plant derived flavonoids on harmful algae from the perspective of PCD, and provide new insights into the antialgal mechanism of allelochemicals.

Excessive phosphorus (P) in eutrophic water induces cyanobacterial blooms that aggravate the burden of in-situ remediation measures. In order to ensure better ecological recovery, Flock & Lock technique has been developed to simultaneously sink cyanobacteria and immobilize P but requires a combination of flocculent and P inactivation agent. Here we synthesized a novel lanthanum-modified pyroaurite (LMP), as an alternative for Flock & Lock of cyanobacteria and phosphorus at the background of rich humic acid and suspended solids. LMP shows a P adsorption capacity of 36.0 mg/g and nearly 100 % removal of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), turbidity , UV 254 and P at a dosage (0.3 g/L) much lower than the commercial analogue (0.5 g/L). The resultant sediment (98.2 % as immobile P) exhibits sound stability without observable release of P or re-growth of cyanobacteria over a 50-day incubation period. The use of LMP also constrains the release of toxic microcystins to 1.4 μg/L from the sunk cyanobacterial cells, outperforming the commonly used polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Similar Flock & Lock efficiency could also be achieved in real eutrophic water. The outstanding Flock & Lock performance of LMP is attributable to the designed La modification. During LMP treatment, La acts as not only a P binder by formation of LaPO 4 , but also a coagulant to create a synergistic effect with pyroaurite. The controlled hydrolysis of surface La(III) over pyroaurite aided the possible formation of La(III)-pyroaurite networking structure, which significantly enhanced the Flock & Lock process through adsorption, charge neutralization, sweep flocculation and entrapment. In the end, the preliminary economic analysis is performed. The results demonstrate that LMP is a versatile and cost-effective agent for in-situ remediation of eutrophic waters.

This study elucidates the critical role of pulse repetition frequency (PRF) in optimizing laser inhibition ofMicrocystis aeruginosa. Using a 355 nm laser (20 ns pulse width, 5 W average power) at 20–65 kHz, 50 kHz is identified as the optimal parameter, achieving 70.6% growth suppression by day 6 (p< 0.001) and reducing cell viability to 28.0 ± 1.6% by day 5 (p< 0.001). Photosynthetic analysis reveals severe PSII dysfunction with Fᵥ/Fₘ of 0.028, representing 91% inhibition (p< 0.001). Biochemical assays demonstrate peak reactive oxygen species generation at 1.59 (p< 0.001) and progressive lipid peroxidation with MDA of 45 nmol/L protein. Transmission electron microscopy and Evans Blue staining corroborate the complete thylakoid disintegration in abundant cells after laser treatment at 50 kHz. These findings establish PRF-dependent photothermal–photomechanical synergy as a deterministic mechanism for efficient, chemical-free algal control.

Moxifloxacin (MOX), a widely used novel antibiotic, may pose ecological risks at its actual environmental concentrations, as has been detected in aquatic systems. However, its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms and regulatory mechanisms of phosphorus in eutrophic aqueous environments are still limited. This study aimed to analyze its physiological and biochemical parameters, including cellular growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative stress biomarkers, and metabolomics to elucidate the toxicity induced by environmental concentrations of MOX inMicrocystis aeruginosaat different phosphorus levels. The results revealed that the EC50values of MOX onM. aeruginosaat different phosphorus concentrations were 8.03, 7.84, and 6.91 μg/L, respectively, indicating MOX toxicity was exacerbated with increasing phosphorus levels. High phosphorus intensified the suppression of chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic pigments, while activating the antioxidant enzyme, indicating severe peroxidation damage. Metabolomic analysis showed MOX induced different discriminating metabolites under different phosphorus levels, and perturbed more biological pathways at higher phosphorus concentrations, such as starch and sucrose metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and glycerolipid metabolism. This indicates that phosphorus plays an important role in regulating metabolism inM. aeruginosaexposed to MOX. The findings provide valuable information on the mechanisms involved in cyanobacteria responses to antibiotic stress, and offer a theoretical basis for accurately assessing antibiotic toxicity in eutrophic aqueous environments.

The membrane integrity of harmful algae remains a major challenge for the safe and effective control of cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water sources. In this study, we used novel amorphous carbon-based ZnO (C@ZnO) nanoparticles to efficiently remove intact Microcystis aeruginosa cells. Different carbon-based ZnO composites were compared and characterized using XRD, Raman spectra , SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS and N 2 adsorption/desorption. The results revealed that a high cyanobacterial cell capture efficiency was obtained by C@ZnO nanoparticles without damaging membrane integrity. The removal efficiency for cell density, OD680, and chlorophyll-a reached 98.4 ± 0.87%, 90.9 ± 1.04%, and 99.5 ± 0.39%, respectively, with the addition of 4.0 g L −1 C@ZnO in 19 min. The viability of algal cells was observed through K + release, dissolved organic carbon release, and extracellular organic matrices during the removal process, thereby revealing the integrity of the cell structure. The optimal conditions (ZnO quantity of 333.80 mg and C@ZnO dosage of 3.48 g L −1 ) were verified via response surface methodology . The intracellular organic matter was released on day 2, although the floc could effectively adsorb part of the algal organic matter (AOM) released. This study developed novel amorphous C@ZnO nanoparticles materials for rapidly capturing intact cyanobacterial blooms to avoid secondary pollution and rovided theoretical guidance that the sludge should be quickly treated during cell removal using C@ZnO.
