Decorating carbon nanofibers with Mo2C nanoparticles towards hierarchically porous and highly catalytic cathode for high-performance Li-O2 batteries

Zhen-Dong Yang,Zhi-Wen Chang,Qi Zhang,Keke Huang,Xin-Bo Zhang

A facile synthesis of the hierarchically porous cathode with Mo 2 C nanoparticles through the electrospinning technique and heat treatment is proposed. The carbonization temperature of the precursors is the key factor for the formation of Mo 2 C nanoparticles on the carbon nanofibers (MCNFs). Compared with the Mo 2 N nanoparticles embedded into N-doped carbon nanofibers film (MNNFs) and N-doped carbon nanofibers film (NFs), the battery with MCNFs cathode is capable of operation with a high-capacity (10,509 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 ), a much reduced discharge-charge voltage gap , and a long-term life (124 cycles at 200 mA g −1 with a specific capacity limit of 500 mAh g −1 ). These excellent performances are derived from the synergy of the following advantageous factors: (1) the hierarchically self-standing and binder-free structure of MCNFs could ensure the high diffusion flux of Li + and O 2 as well as avoid clogging of the discharge product, bulk Li 2 O 2 ; (2) the well dispersed Mo 2 C nanoparticles not only afford rich active sites, but also facilitate the electronic transfer for catalysis.

Micronano Porous Mo2C@C Nanorods Composites as Robust Anodes for Li-ion Battery

Zhengwei Yang,Huifeng Wang,Boshi Cheng,Chuang Yue,Gaozhan Liu,Runtian Zheng,Fang Hu,Jie Shu

Micronano porous Mo 2 C@C nanorods (NRs) composite anodes are successfully synthesized using the raw materials of MoO 3 NRs, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer, and inactive sodium chloride (NaCl) microparticles. The abundant and soluble NaCl microparticles act as the sacrificial templates, which increase the surface contact area between the MoO 3 NRs and the PAN polymer, thus promoting the thorough formation of Mo 2 C electrodes during the carbonization process. The optimized Mo 2 C@C-template (MCC-T) NR composite electrodes deliver an enhanced electrochemical performance, which is ascribed to the enlarged surface area, reduced path distance of lithium ions, and structural stability. In addition, the Li-ion storage mechanism and the electrochemical kinetics of Mo 2 C@C NR composite anodes are also systemically and experimentally investigated by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. This synthetic strategy for MCC-T NR composite anodes is helpful to design other nanostructured carbide anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Construction of an FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 monolith electrocatalyst with an increased number of active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity toward water oxidation

Huanyu Chen,Jia-Qi Bai,Yuxue Wei,Jingshuai Chen,Song Sun,Chang-Jie Mao

The exploration of high-efficiency and Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an ultrafine FeNi–Mo2C composite immobilized on the surface of SiO2 support is fabricated through annealing a mixture of Fe, Ni and Mo precursors and SiO2 nanospheres. The electronic structure of the FeNi alloy is tuned by combining with Mo2C, forming a hybrid architecture with enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites. The introduced SiO2 nanospheres reduce the nanoparticle size of the FeNi–Mo2C composite, further increasing the population of the surface electrochemically active sites. Benefiting from the compositional and structural merits, the FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER behavior with a small overpotential of 180 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, an ultra-small Tafel slope of 11.0 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline media. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the increased number and enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites due to the synergistic effect of each component. This study provides a promising way to design and develop an advanced electrocatalyst towards water oxidation.

Dual-functional Mo2C quantum dots enriched N-doped graphitic carbon layers in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)

Chencheng Dong,Yan Bao,Mingyang Xing,Masakazu Anpo,Jinlong Zhang

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are reckoned effective for removing persistent and recalcitrant pollutants by reactive oxygen species (ROSs), including hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 • - ), and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ), as well as singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). In this work, the Mo 2 C quantum dots enriched N-doped graphitic carbon layers (Mo 2 C QDs/NGCLs) were constructed via a facile two-step methodology. Interestingly, the Mo 2 C QDs/NGCLs acted as a highly efficient cocatalyst and/or catalyst simultaneously in AOPs, in particular visible-light-driven (VLD) Fenton and VLD PMS activation. In the hydroxyl radical-based AOPs (•OH-AOPs), it exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency for a range of aromatic organic pollutants , including rhodamine B (RhB) (99.9 %), phenol (90 %), benzophenone-3 (BZP) (83 %), methyl orange (MO) (58 %), methyl blue (MB) (89 %), ibuprofen (IBU) (100 %), and carbamazepine (CBZ) (50 %). Sulfate radicals-based AOPs (SR-AOPs) effectively degrade RhB (72 %), MO (83 %), IBU (70 %), and BZP (100 %). Thus, the present findings confirmed the potential of transition metal carbides for AOP applications and established a solid theoretical and technical basis for further research.

β-Mo2C nanoparticles/carbon nanotubes Mott-Schottky nanoarray on carbon cloth as freestanding cathodes for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuanghui Zeng,Xiangqun Zeng,Lan Jiang,Zhao Ding,Jiao-Jing Shao,Jie Zhao

s Developing efficient non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is urgently required for the large-scale electrolysis of water. Mo 2 C shows excellent HER catalytic activity. The construction of heterostructures by combining Mo 2 C and carbonaceous materials provides an effective strategy to modulate the electronic structure and hydrogen adsorption ability of molybdenum carbide . The β-Mo 2 C nanoparticles bundled on semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a Mott-Schottky heterojunction has been prepared in situ on the carbon cloth via a facile solvothermal and annealing process. Contributing to the synergistic effect of β-Mo 2 C and CNTs, the synthesized Mo 2 C/CNTs@CC electrode exhibits greatly enhanced HER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 123 mV to achieve a current density of −10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec −1 , and excellent durability. DFT calculations indicate that the CNTs donate electrons to β-Mo 2 C to enhance the coupling interfaces within β-Mo 2 C and CNTs and modify the electronic structure, resulting in a lower reaction barrier in the Volmer step and faster HER activities. This work provides a synthetic route to Mott-Schottky heterostructure Mo 2 C/CNTs with excellent HER catalytic activity.

1D-ordered mesoporous corncob-like Mo2C carbon nanotubes loaded with FeMnO3 hollow porous nanospheres as an efficient electrochemical sensing platform for rutin detection

Yaqi Yang,Jiejun Li,Zhiwang Luo,Xingnian Li,Jiayi Zou,Chunyan Li,Chao Chen,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

One-dimensional (1D) ordered mesoporous carbon hybrid nanotubes loaded with bimetallic oxide hollow nanospheres are expected to be very attractive electrocatalysts . In this study, through high-temperature pyrolysis , we generated Mo 2 C@C PNTs with outstanding electrical conductivity , a significant surface area , and effective catalytic activity by wrapping ordered mesoporous polypyrroles on the surface of 1D MoO 3 nanotubes using block polymers that self-assembled. FeMnO 3 hollow porous nanospheres have a large specific surface area, many electroactive sites, and excellent molecular/charge diffusion properties, which can be compounded with 1D ordered mesoporous nitride-rich carbon to solve the problem of poor electrical conductivity of metal oxides and to prevent the accumulation of 1D nanotubes. The composite showed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards rutin due to the synergistic interaction between Mo 2 C@C PNTs and FeMnO 3 . In the best case, rutin has a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.35 × 10 −9 M and a wide linear range (3 ×   10 −9 to 3.1 ×   10 −6 M). The sensor displays a remarkable level of selective response to rutin in the presence of other co-interfering species. Furthermore, it has superb repeatability and reproducibility. The sensor has shown outstanding recovery (95.7–104.1 %) in the practical viability of detecting rutin in beverages. This work not only provides a new candidate for the accurate detection of rutin but also provides insight into the exploration of advanced sensing materials.

Mo2C Morphology Dependence in Co–Mo2C Interface Structure Evaluation for Boosting α-Olefin Hydroformylation

Zhuo Li,Huimin Yang,Rui Gao,Peng He,Xingchen Liu,Ruilin Liu,Xiaomin Dai,Yunhua Xu,Yong Qin,Bin Zhang

The hydroformylation of high-carbon α-olefins is a pivotal industrial process. Still, heterogeneous Co-based catalysts suffer from low activity and Co leaching due to strong coordination of CO to Co atoms. Herein, we address the dynamic evolution and active structure of Co species by interacting Co nanoparticles or ultrahigh-dispersed clusters with β-Mo2C nanoparticles (Co-30Mo2Cparticle/CNF) and nanofilms (Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF) on carbon nanofibers. The specific activity in the formation of heptanal from 1-hexene hydroformylation increased by 10.7 times on Co-30Mo2Cparticle/CNF (21.4 molheptanal/molCo/h) and 2.4 times on Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF (4.7 molheptanal/molCo/h) compared with Co/CNF (2.0 molheptanal/molCo/h). Moreover, Co-100Mo2Cfilm/CNF exhibits enhanced stability with only 1.7% Co leaching. The Mo2C nanoparticles interact with Co nanoparticles, oxidizing them to form highly active Co-MoOx sites with a lower CO insertion barrier. The reaction environment influences the structural evolution of the Co-MoOx interaction. In contrast, Mo2C nanofilms form robust Co–C and Co–Mo bonds at the Co–Mo2C interface, stabilizing atomically distributed Co clusters against leaching. This work establishes a morphology-driven strategy to control the dynamic interaction of Co and additives, thereby decoupling activity and stability in heterogeneous catalysis for hydroformylation.

Selective production of phenolic monomers via high efficient lignin depolymerization with a carbon based nickel-iron-molybdenum carbide catalyst under mild conditions

Bochao Yan,Xiaoyu Lin,Zhihui Chen,Qinjie Cai,Suping Zhang

Lignin is an abundant renewable source of bio-aromatics and its valorization is of great importance. In this work, an efficient non-precious carbon based metal-Mo 2 C catalytic system for selective production of phenolic monomers (PMs) from organosolv lignin depolymerization is proposed. With the optimized catalyst of Ni-Fe-Mo 2 C, 89.56% of liquefaction and 35.53% of PMs yields were achieved under 260 ℃ for 4 h with water-methanol (4:1 v/v) solvent. Characterization of the catalysts shows that the induction of Ni-Fe species was favor for the formation of β-Mo 2 C, and efficiently promoted the lignin liquefaction. The decoration of Ni/Fe can also change the side chain hydrogenolysis ability of the catalyst and exhibite high yield for 4-ethylphenol (14.77%) production. Methanol, used as co-solvent, was found to play an important role in PMs production and lignin depolymerization. These results demonstrated that the Ni-Fe-Mo 2 C catalytic system has potential to produce valuable phenolic monomers from lignin under mild conditions.

Bifunctional Mo2C–N Sites on a Mo2C-GO-NC Interlayer for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: Suppressing the Shuttle Effect and Enhancing Kinetics

Yongping Ma,Aihao Xu,Xiaolei Yu,Fan Liu,Yankai Zhang,Jitong Wang

The commercialization of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries faces significant challenges due to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and sluggish reaction kinetics. To address these issues, a Mo2C-GO-NC interlayer, decorated with bifunctional Mo2C–N binding sites, is successfully synthesized via a facile one-step complexation method. The combination of transition metal molybdenum and nitrogen doping endows the reduced graphene oxide with a unique porous structure, strong chemisorption capabilities, and exceptional catalytic conversion properties. The Mo2C-GO-NC interlayer effectively traps lithium polysulfides and accelerates their conversion, as confirmed by theoretical calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy. These studies reveal that the bifunctional Mo2C–N sites promote uniform Li2S deposition and enhance Li+ migration, significantly improving the reaction kinetics. As a result, the Li–S cells assembled by the Mo2C-GO-NC-modified separator exhibit a high initial capacity of 906.1 mAh g–1 at 1 C with a capacity decay rate of only 0.032% per cycle. In addition, a discharge capacity of 832.2 mAh g–1 was still exhibited after 110 cycles at a high sulfur loading of 5 mg cm–2. This work offers a strategic approach for designing advanced interlayers with bifunctional binding sites, paving the way for high-performance Li–S batteries.

Efficient Method for Kraft Lignin Depolymerization to Phenolic Monomers via Modified Spinel Catalysts

Xiaoyu Lin,Gaojie Shi,Wenbin Ding,Bochao Yan,Suping Zhang

The rational modification and assembly of catalysts with regulable active sites for selective conversion of lignin to phenolic monomers remain challenging. In this work, a new modified spinel catalyst (NixCo3–xO4–Mo2C) is proposed for the selective production of phenolic monomers from Kraft lignin. The performance of the catalysts is greatly improved by the synergistic effect on Mo2C and NixCo3–xO4 spinel. The NiCo2O4–Mo2C catalyst achieved an outstanding catalytic conversion (up to 86.2 wt %) for the Kraft lignin depolymerization and excellent selective cleavage for phenolic monomers to 34.9 wt %. The characterization of the catalyst shows that Mo2C provided more acidic sites and improved the hydrogenation performance by changing the arrangement of spinel. Additionally, the hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds further confirmed the outstanding performance of the modified spinel catalysts.

Hollow but perforated C/Co/Mo2C cubes enhance electromagnetic absorption

Xinghang Duan,Qiaolin Li,Tiantian Cao,Shengxiang Xiong,Gang Chen,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan,Zongyou Yin

The development of advanced electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers is crucial for applications in stealth technology and EM interference shielding. A major challenge in this field is achieving high absorption efficiency across a broad frequency range while maintaining lightweight and structurally robust materials. In this study, we successfully developed a precise and flexible synthesis strategy to prepare hollow C/Co/Mo2C cubes using Zn/Co(C4O4)(H2O)2 as a flexible template, which offers the advantages of simultaneous removal and easy control of metal Co content. The shell of the hollow cubes can be further optimized by changing the oxidizer content for polypyrrole (PPy). At optimum shell thickness and Co content, the C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 composites, featuring hollow but perforated structures, exhibit superior EM wave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −73.46 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.20 GHz at 2.0 mm with 15 wt% filler. Detailed investigations reveal that the hollow C/Co/Mo2C-0.4 cubes provide polarization loss, conduction loss, magnetic loss, and optimal impedance matching characteristics, significantly enhancing EM wave absorption performance. This work offers a promising strategy for assembling multiple components into a hollow architecture, offering superior molybdenum carbide microwave absorbers.

Structural determination of europium-incorporated Mo2C microrods and photoluminescence studies

Chunxia Jiang,Yiping Tang,Zhi Zeng,Jinwei Gao,Maosheng Li,Yuhui Zheng

Europium incorporated molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) has been assembled at 800 °C based on a single step and the synthesis processes have been discussed. (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 ·4H 2 O has been employed as a precursor and p -phenylenediamine has been selected as the carbon source. In contrast to conventional organic dyes, this novel lanthanide-activated phosphor provides red luminescence in the form of higher monochromatic purity due to the parity forbidden transitions. More importantly, the emission intensity of 5 D 0  →  7 F 2 transition increased depending on the incorporation of europium ions and the most suitable doping concentration will be 0.3 mmol. The utilization of f – f transition of Eu 3+ in molybdenum carbide has made the red emission materials accessible for application in the area of display, electronics and bio-imaging.
