Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP1 and MIP2) were synthesized using acrylamide as the functional monomer and acetic acid and ethanedioic acid as the template, respectively. Textural properties of MIPs and nonimprinted polymer (NIP) were characterized by an N2 adsorption experiment, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. NO2 basic adsorption conditions were set as 40 °C for the temperature, 100 mL/min for the flow rate, and 1000 ppm for the NO2 concentration through fixed-bed breakthrough experiments, and at these conditions, the NO2 adsorption capacity of MIP1, MIP2, and NIP was 0.58, 0.63, and 0.51 mg/g, respectively. The NO2 adsorption performance was nearly unaffected by O2; however, SO2 and CO2 inhibited NO2 adsorption severely. The H2O molecule had fewer negative effects on NO2 adsorption because of the large number of hydrophobic groups −(CH2–CH)n– in polymers and the hydrogen bond force between H2O molecules.

Tellurium nanotubes (TeNT) heterojunction with Tellurium oxide (TeO 2 ) were prepared by in situ oxidation at elevated temperatures in air. The chemiresistive type NO 2 sensor was then fabricated by depositing the synthesized TeNT/TeO 2 on the integrated gold electrodes. The response of the TeNT/TeO 2 based sensor to 600 ppb NO 2 was 38.8 %, which was about 3.2 times higher than that of the single-phase TeNT based sensor (12.1 %). The response and recovery time are 39 s and 49 s, respectively, which are substantially reduced compared to those of the pristine TeNT based sensor (133 s and 336 s) and the results reported in literature. The sensor also exhibits good stability with a response deviation of less than 2 % for 45 days and a good resistance to environmental disturbances. The improved sensor performance can be attributed to the heterojunction formed between TeNT and TeO 2 . Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations show that the formed TeNT/TeO 2 heterojunction enhances the adsorption energy (-0.671 eV) and charge transfer (0.49 |e|) between NO 2 and the TeNT/TeO 2 .

Constructing heterojunctions in semiconductor-based sensors is a vital method of modulating electronic structures and designing high-performance sensors for toxic gas detection. In this study, F-doped SnS x (F-SnS x ) decorated ZnOHF composites were acquired via a two-step solvothermal method . The experimental results confirmed the establishment of heterojunctions between ZnOHF and F-SnS x . The optimized F-SnS x decorated ZnOHF snowflake-like nanoflowers-based NO 2 sensors exhibited incomparable selectivity along with supreme sensitivity (S = 137–10 ppm NO 2 at 200 ℃), rapid responding/recovering speed (34 s/6 s) and low detection limit (50 ppb). NO 2 sensing mechanism and the influence of humidity interference on NO 2 sensing performances were fully discussed. This work not only evidences the great potential of F-SnS x /ZnOHF snowflake-like nanoflowers for NO 2 recognitions but also paves a feasible routine for advancing NO 2 sensing performances by electronic structure regulations.

The gas pollutant of Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) can have a severe impact on human respiratory systems, with a potential threat to human health. Therefore, a NO 2 sensor is necessary to be implemented to have the information on exhaled low concentrations of NO 2 emitted from different sources. In this work, the tellurium nanotubes (Te NT) based heterojunction with SnO 2 nanoparticles (TeNT/SnO 2 ) for detecting ppb-level NO 2 at room temperature was developed. The TeNT /SnO 2 sensor exhibits a better response (25.3 %), and faster response time (32 s) to 600 ppb of NO 2 in comparison to pristine Te NT based sensors (7.9 % and 154 s). The promoted sensing properties including selectivity, signal repeatability, and long-term stability could be attributed to the formation of TeNT/SnO 2 heterojunctions. The density function theory (DFT) in accordance with the first principle was conducted to calculate the adsorption ability of the TeNT/SnO 2 heterojunctions. It indicates that the TeNT/SnO 2 heterojunctions facilitated the adsorption of oxygen (-0.635 eV) and NO 2 (-1.533 eV) in comparison to Te NT.

NO 2 is a toxic gas that poses a significant threat to the environment and human health. In this work, one-dimensional ZnO nanowires and two-dimensional layered titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) have been prepared by hydrothermal and selective chemical etching methods, respectively. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZnO composites are synthesized by electrostatic self-assembly method. The characterization results indicate that the ZnO nanowires are uniformly dispersed on the surface of layered Ti 3 C 2 T x to form a heterostructure. Meanwhile, the gas sensitive performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x /ZnO composite material is investigated and compared with that of pure Ti 3 C 2 T x . The results reveal that the composite exhibits a high selectivity as well as sensitivity with a response value (S = Rg/Ra) of 18.66 to 100 ppm NO 2 at 250 ℃, which is 4.3 times higher than that of pure Ti 3 C 2 T x . This proves that the prepared composite material is an effective sensing material for detecting NO 2 gas.

The three-dimensional (3D) microstructures assembled by nanomaterials have attracted great attention due to their unique hierarchical structure and large surface area. In this study, the hierarchical nanosheets-assembled SnS 2 hollow microspheres with an average diameter of 6.1 μm were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method . Then Pt nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of SnS 2 to form Pt/SnS 2 nanocomposites using the in-situ reduction method. Compared with pristine SnS 2 -based sensors, the Pt/SnS 2 sensors exhibited improved gas-sensing performances to NO 2 gas, including higher sensitivity, shorter response time , and better selectivity . The superior sensing performance can be ascribed to the Schottky junction created between Pt and SnS 2 , along with the catalytic effect of Pt. Moreover, the adsorption energy of SnS 2 and Pt-modified SnS 2 for NO 2 molecules was calculated using first principles based on density functional theory (DFT). The Pt modification can enhance the interaction of NO 2 with the SnS 2 surface, which is favorable for improving the gas-sensing properties. This work provides novel hierarchical SnS 2 microspheres based gas sensors for NO 2 detection.

Developing miniaturized portable sensors for detecting NO2 at low temperatures in agricultural environments is crucial for enhancing nitrogen fertilizer utilization efficiency and preventing environmental pollution. This work successfully synthesized ZnO/MWCNT heterostructures using an in situ 2D electrodeposition method under direct current voltage, which demonstrated exceptional gas-sensing performance toward NO2 under both room and lower temperature conditions. The sensor demonstrates a 4-fold enhancement response to 10 ppm of NO2 compared to pristine ZnO sensors and exhibits a response of 98% to 1 ppm of NO2 at room temperature with a detection limit of 30 ppb. Even at −20 °C, it maintains a 5.1% response to 1 ppm of NO2. Notably, the unique nanosheet structure endows the heterostructure with reversible temperature sensing and high-temperature circuit-breaker characteristics, enabling the sensor to have the ability to alarm for temperatures above 50 °C. The incorporation of MWCNTs and the formation of the p–n heterojunction play a synergistic role in enhancing the gas-sensing performance. Moreover, we successfully detected NO2 emissions from nitrogen fertilizers using the ZnO/MWCNT heterostructure sensor, demonstrating its potential for integration with Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enable intelligent agricultural monitoring.

The long-term stability of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) gas sensors is of great value in advancing their practical applications under complex environmental conditions (high humidity, high temperature, etc.). However, long-term stable and accurate gas detection by MOF sensors in an energy-efficient state remains a formidable challenge. In this work, the vanadium-based MOF MIL-47(V) is reported as a novel and efficient NO 2 sensing material, which exhibits intense response and trace detection with outstanding stability at room temperature (RT, 25 °C). The high specific surface area and abundant hollow channels of MIL-47(V) provide numerous active sites for the adsorption of NO 2 molecules. The high chemical stability and hydrophobicity enable the MIL-47(V) sensor to maintain long-term stability in the face of environmental disturbances. Furthermore, theoretical calculations validate the high reactivity of the V atoms and the hollow channels in MIL-47(V). The V sites demonstrate a strong adsorption energy of −0.87 eV to NO 2 , which enhances the interaction between the MIL-47(V) and NO 2 . The MIL-47(V) sensor shows outstanding NO 2 sensing properties at RT, with high sensitivity (response ≈ 2.89–10 ppm NO 2 ), trace detection limit (15 ppb), excellent long-term stability (response ≈ 2.11–3 ppm NO 2 , eight weeks) and good humidity resistance (response ≈ 1.21–1.14 to 0 %-80 % relative humidity, 100 ppb NO 2 ), which makes it remarkably attractive for ultrasensitive, accurate and reliable NO 2 detection at RT.

The evolution of the nuclear industry is inextricably linked to lithium isotopes. With its distinct benefits, the solvent extraction approach is projected to achieve industrial separation of lithium isotopes. However, the lack of studies on the extraction process conditions and mechanisms has limited the development of multi-stage processes. In this paper, based on the 4-NO 2 -B15C5/[BMIm][NTf 2 ] system, the process conditions and extraction mechanism of the system were investigated by thermodynamic and kinetic studies. The results indicate that lithium isotope separation is a spontaneous exothermic process controlled by diffusion. In addition, DFT calculations show that the binding sites of crown ether and Li + are located in the coronary heart of crown ether, and electrostatic and van der Waals forces mainly exist between them. On this basis, a 10-stage cross-flow extraction experiment was carried out using crown ether as the extractant. The aqueous phase feed solution is fully utilized, and the 7 Li abundance is increased to 93.29 %. In summary, this research provides a foundation for the development of synergistic multi-stage extraction techniques in the future.

Flake-like La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 sensing electrodes (SEs) were synthesized via a one-pot molten-salt method (MSM) for impedancemetric NO 2 sensors based on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte. The MSM-derived La 2 CrO 6 precursor underwent self-phase separation during high-temperature calcination, yielding a La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 composite SE with abundant heterointerfaces. Structural characterizations confirmed that the molten-salt-derived flakes provide a highly accessible surface and abundant La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 heterointerfaces after calcination, which effectively amplify the electrode/electrolyte interfacial electrochemical reactions toward NO 2 . Consequently, compared with single-phase LaCrO 3 , the La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 composite SE exhibits excellent sensitivity, which is attributed to the synergistic coupling effect in the sensing mechanism. La 2 CrO 6 provides strong adsorption sites, while LaCrO 3 ensures thermodynamic stability. By optimizing the temperature and time of the MSM reaction and the calcination parameters, the SE morphology and sensing performance were systematically improved. The optimal La 2 CrO 6 /LaCrO 3 sensing electrode, which was prepared by reacting at 500 °C for 1.5 h and then calcined at 800 °C, exhibited an outstanding sensitivity of 12.51 °/decade to NO 2 (25-700 ppm) at a working temperature of 400 °C. Additionally, the sensor exhibited superior repeatability, humidity resistance, and high anti-interference capabilities against various exhaust gases (H 2 , NH 3 , CH 4 , CO 2 , and NO). This work confirms that the molten salt method is a highly effective strategy for constructing high-performance composite sensing electrodes.

Developing high-performance catalysts for the electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3–RR) is crucial for sustainable ammonia (NH3) production. Herein, we report copper silicate (CuSiO3) as a highly efficient and selective catalyst for NH3 production via the NO3–RR. In CuSiO3, the alternately arranged Cu–O octahedra among stable Si–O tetrahedra prevent the active Cu2+ centers from being transformed to the metallic Cu phase, thereby effectively suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Meanwhile, Si–O bonds withdraw electrons from Cu sites, leading the remaining electrons fill low-energy orbitals for a lower d-band center. This electron-withdrawing effect generates more vacant or partially filled Cu d orbitals that can accept electrons from the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) of adsorbed *NO3 and *NO2. As a result, CuSiO3 enhances the adsorption of the NO3– reactant to improve the NO3–RR activity and strengthens the affinity for *NO2 to inhibit byproduct production. Consequently, CuSiO3 delivers a high NH3 yield of 214.5 μmol h–1 mg–1 and a selectivity of 97.1% in 0.1 M Na2SO4 containing 10 mM NaNO3, even when the applied potential is as negative as −1.1 V. This work not only demonstrates CuSiO3 as a promising NO3–RR catalyst for the sustainable production of green NH3 but also offers valuable insights into the rational design of copper-based catalysts for a wide range of applications.
