Nickel foam (NF) self-supported NiFe LDH electrodes have been widely studied for their excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. However, the performance of electrodes synthesized via conventional electrodeposition or hydrothermal methods are still unsatisfactory owing to their insufficient specific surface area and suboptimal activity. In this study, we report NF-supported NiFe LDH electrodes directly derived from NF-supported-bimetallic MOF-74(NiFe). The as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibited a hierarchical structure and inherited the molecular level porosity of the MOF-74 precursor. The as-prepared electrode underwent self-optimization during the OER process, significantly increasing the electrochemical active surface area and providing numerous catalytic sites. In addition, the 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DHTP) ligand released from MOF-74 during its dissociation chemically modified NiFe LDH. This ligand promoted the formation of Ni(III) and resisted Cl− corrosion. Thus, LDH-MOF74@NF outperformed almost all previously reported NiFe LDH@NF electrodes, exhibiting excellent OER performance and high durability in KOH and KOH/NaCl solutions with overpotentials of 244 mV and 254 mV at 100 mA cm−2, respectively.

The harsh marine environment demands enhanced corrosion resistance and compatibility of wave-absorbing materials for ship platforms. Urgently required are wave-absorbing composites with both efficient performance and corrosion resistance. In this work, a core–shell composite NiCoFe LDH@SiC nw was specifically designed and synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal in-situ growth method. Through precise tuning of the LDH content on the composite surface, combined with the principle of impedance matching, the dielectric loss is kept within a moderate range. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of LDH 2 @SiC nw at a thickness of 2.47 mm is as high as 6.19 GHz when the filling ratio is only 3 %. Because the synergistic effect of the porous LDH shell and the core–shell heterostructure to enhance the dielectric loss and multiple scattering absorption of microwave in the composite. Significantly, the LDH 2 @SiC nw anti-corrosion coating exhibits exceptional long-term corrosion resistance owing to the barrier effect provided by SiC nw and the Cl - inhibition of LDH, the |Z| 0.01Hz remains at 7.8 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 even after 30 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Hence, the LDH@SiC nw composites developed in this study hold significant potential in advancing the progress of functionalized MA materials with enhanced corrosion resistance.

Oxygen-vacancy-rich amorphous layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity due to unsaturated ligand structures modulating the electronic states of active metals. However, high crystallinity ensures stability limits the development of such amorphous catalysts is prevailing consensus, and the fundamental understanding of constructing amorphous/crystalline coexisting LDHs as viable non-precious anode alternatives remains insufficient. Herein, a crystalline/amorphous coexisting NiFe LDH (a/c-NiFe LDH) electrocatalyst was synthesized at room temperature via a facile solvent adjustment strategy. Adding isopropanol modulates nucleation kinetics, tailors the catalyst’s morphology, and confers exceptional resistance to mechanical degradation during the oxygen evolution process. Crucially, solvent conditioning induces an interspersed amorphous structure within the crystalline LDH framework, regulating electron transfer pathways. Simultaneously, abundant oxygen vacancies optimize the electronic structure near unsaturated metal ligands, synergistically enhancing OER performance. Benefiting from these features, the a/c-NiFe LDH catalyst achieves a remarkably low Tafel slope of 29.6 mV dec −1 , surpassing that of commercial IrO 2 (80.5 mV dec −1 ) and exhibiting the lowest reconstruction potential. Furthermore, it demonstrates outstanding stability exceeding 130 h at an industrial-grade current density of 1 A cm −2 in an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer. This work provides a novel design of homologous crystalline/amorphous heterojunction OER electrodes and offers effective guidance for industrial applications.

In this work, a W O bond-enriched NiFe layered double hydroxide composite (NiFe-LDH@NWT) was synthesized as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The incorporation of W O bonds effectively modulates the local electronic environment and surface charge distribution of the NiFe-LDH, thereby enhancing its intrinsic activity and interfacial reactivity. Electrochemical measurements reveal that NiFe-LDH@NWT delivers low overpotentials of 236 mV at current densities of 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, with a small Tafel slope of 33.53 mV dec −1 , indicating favorable reaction kinetics. In addition, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) reaches 7.82 mF cm −2 , confirming the increased density of accessible active sites upon W O bond integration. Notably, the catalyst maintains excellent operational stability for over 1000 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . These findings highlight a promising strategy to tailor the physicochemical properties of LDH-based catalysts, providing valuable insights into the rational design of stable and efficient OER systems for water-splitting applications.

Although molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has garnered significant interest as a potential catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), its poor intrinsic activity and few marginal active spots restrict its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we successfully constructed a catalyst via a simple hydrothermal method by forming a heterostructure of MoS2 with Cr-doped nickel–iron hydroxide (NiFe LDH) to synthesize a MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst to significantly improve the OER catalytic performance. MoS2 plays a crucial function as an electron transport channel in the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH heterostructure, which increases the electron transport rate. Furthermore, a larger active surface area for NiFeCr LDH is provided by the ultrathin layered structure of MoS2, increasing the number of active sites and encouraging the OER. On the other hand, the introduction of Cr element increased the density of the catalytic center and provided additional Cr-OH active sites, which accelerated the oxygen decomposition reaction. These two factors act synergistically to improve the intrinsic structure of MoS2, increase the number of reactive sites, and dramatically enhance the OER catalytic performance. Excellent OER activity is demonstrated by the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst, which only needs an overpotential of 224 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec−1. The catalyst also demonstrated outstanding stability, with its activity practically holding steady after 48 h of testing. This work offers novel ideas for enhancing and designing MoS2-based OER catalysts, and it provides a crucial reference for research in the field of clean energy.

Removal of sulfur species from blast furnace gas is urgently needed due to the strict emission limits imposed on iron-steel industrial flue gas. Improving the sulfur capacity of H 2 S is a crucial challenge to reduce the operation cost. NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) adsorbents were synthesized using the hydrothermal method to strengthen the adsorption of H 2 S, achieving a high sulfur capacity of 133.6 mg/g at 50 °C. Characterization studies have revealed that the reaction pathway of H 2 S on the NiFe LDH surface involves adsorption, dissociation and oxidation. It has been clarified that the high sulfur capacity can be attributed to the abundant H 2 S dissociation sites and the excellent O 2 activation sites. The dissociation sites of H 2 S encompass metal sites, -OH and CO 3 2- . The interaction between O 2 and the bridge site of asymmetric metal atoms significantly enhances the dissociation of O 2 . Strengthening the dissociation of H 2 S and O 2 improves the sulfur capacity. The deactivation of adsorbents comes from the continuous consumption of oxygen species mainly composed of -OH and the deposition of sulfur species in the smaller mesopores ranging from 2 to 10 nm. This work provides useful insights into designing highly efficient iron-based adsorbents for the desulfurization of blast furnace gas.

The transition metal hydroxide NiFe LDH is a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst. Surface engineering, such as the introduction of oxygen vacancies into NiFe LDH, has been reported to further improve the OER performance; however, searching a facile approach remains an issue. In this work, we report a novel and efficient electrochemical reduction method for in situ introduction of oxygen vacancies into NiFe LDH laminates by applying a constant negative voltage. The results show that the reduced NiFe LDH (denoted as r-NiFe LDH) exhibits enhanced OER performance versus its counterpart NiFe due to the increase of oxygen vacancy density, the electrochemically active surface area, wetting ability, and the significant electron transfer rate. In 1 M KOH, the r-NiFe LDH shows a high current density of 110 mA cm−2 at 1.60 V (vs. RHE), which is 2.8 times the current density of NiFe LDH (40 mA cm−2), as well as the long-term stability of 100 h. This electroreduction method is also applicable to other LDH materials loaded by different current substrates or synthesized by various methods, demonstrating its universality for the enhancement of the OER activity of LDH electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient catalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) is important for water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Although NiFe oxides are considered as potentially applicable catalysts in the alkaline media, there are still a limited numbers of researches working on membrane electrode assembly(MEA) fed with pure water due to their poor electrical conductivity. In this work, antimony doped tin oxide(ATO) has been employed as conductive supports where NiFe layered double hydroxide uniformly dispersed[named NiFe-LDH(layered double hydroxide)/ATO]. The catalysts have been synthesized by a one-step co-precipitation method, and then NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma was obtained through mild air plasma treatment. According to XPS analysis, binding energies of Ni 2 p and Fe 2 p were shifted negatively. Moreover, a new signal of low oxygen coordination appeared on O 1 s spectrum after air plasma treatment. These XPS results indicated that oxygen vacancies(O v ) were generated after air plasma treatment. Electrochemical measurement indicated that the vacancy-rich NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma exhibited better performance than NiFe-LDH/ATO not only in 1 mol/L KOH solutions but also in an alkaline polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer(APEWE) fed with deionized water. This work provides a feasible way to design practical catalysts used in electrochemical energy conversion systems by choosing corrosion resistance supports and defect engineering.

To effectively address energy challenges, it is crucial to explore efficient and stable bifunctional non-precious metal catalysts. In this study, a Mo-doped nickel–iron layered double hydroxide with flower-cluster architecture was successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method, which demonstrated a good water splitting performance. After an appropriate amount of Mo doping, some lattice distortions in the material provided reactive sites for the adsorption and conversion of intermediates, thus optimising the charge distribution of the material. Moreover, the multidimensional void structures formed after doping had a larger specific surface area and accelerated the penetration of the electrolyte, which significantly improved the activity of the catalyst in alkaline media. At 10 mA·cm −2 , the hydrogen and oxygen evolution overpotentials of Mo-doped nickel–iron double hydroxides (Mo–NiFe LDH/NF-0.2) were 167 and 220 mV, respectively, with an excellent durability up to 24 h. When the Mo–NiFe LDH/NF-0.2 catalyst was used as the cathode and anode of an electrolytic cell, the catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 at an applied voltage of 1.643 V. This study provides a novel approach for designing excellent bifunctional electrocatalysts containing nonprecious metals. Graphical abstract

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), as a key process in renewable energy technologies and wastewater treatment, suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics due to its six-electron transfer characteristics, necessitating the development of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, a one-pot method combined with a sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) etching strategy was employed to successfully prepare porous Mo doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (P-Mo-NiFe-LDH), achieving a significant enhancement in UOR performance. Studies revealed that Mo doping altered the microscopic morphology of NiFe-LDH and promoted the transition of Ni 2+ /Fe 2+ to higher valence states (Ni³⁺/Fe³⁺), thereby improving the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the porous structure constructed by NaBH₄ etching not only exposed abundant active sites but also optimized the electron transport pathways. This synergistic effect of morphology regulation and electronic structure optimization enabled P-Mo-NiFe-LDH to exhibit outstanding catalytic performance in a 1 M KOH + 0.33 M urea electrolyte: a current density of 10 mA•cm⁻² was achieved at just 1.39 V (vs. RHE), with a Tafel slope of 38.7 mV•dec⁻¹, demonstrating a clear advantage over most reported NiFe based catalysts. This catalytic potential is 90 mV lower than that of the water oxidation reaction, offering certain energy-saving benefits. The synergistic strategy of surface pore structures and heteroatom doping in this work provides new insights for designing high-performance LDH-based electrocatalysts.

The practical deployment of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is fundamentally limited by the instability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts caused by continuous dissolution of active metal sites under harsh operating conditions. Herein, we report a strategy for stabilizing NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) via weak Brönsted base intercalation, which tunes the interlayer spacing and interfacial electronic structure. Through the intercalation of weakly basic nitrate anions (NO 3 − ), a nitrate-modified NiFe-LDH (NiFe-NO 3 ) is constructed, which effectively suppresses Fe dissolution by stabilizing high-valence Ni/Fe species during operation. As a result, NiFe-NO 3 exhibits exceptional durability, maintaining stable operation at 1000 mA cm −2 in 30 wt% KOH at 80 °C for over 500 h with an ultralow degradation rate of 0.04 mV·h −1 (retention rate of electrochemical activity was 99.1%), representing a ∼12-fold lifetime improvement over pristine NiFe-LDH. Mechanistic studies reveal that NO 3 − intercalation induces synergistic effects including slight interlayer expansion, electronic redistribution, and regulation of interlayer Brönsted basicity, which collectively stabilize high-valence Ni/Fe species and preserve the oxyhydroxide active phase during OER. This work demonstrates that Brönsted base intercalation provides an effective strategy to suppress active-site dissolution and offers new insights for the design of durable OER catalysts for industrial alkaline water electrolysis (AWE).

Exploring efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is critical for improving the performance of alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs). Nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is regarded as a promising candidate but suffers from intrinsically low electrical conductivity that restricts charge transfer during OER catalysis. Herein, we present a facile and scalable strategy to fabricate a NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7 composite OER catalyst by integrating highly conductive Magnéli-phase Ti4O7 with NiFe-LDH, serving as the anode of AWE. The resulting composite preserves the flower-like morphology of pristine NiFe-LDH while achieving a high electrical conductivity of 0.81 S cm−1. Electronic structure analysis shows that the work function difference between NiFe-LDH and Ti4O7 generates a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, driving electron transfer from NiFe-LDH to Ti4O7, which induces band gap narrowing for NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7, thereby accelerating charge transport and thus boosting OER kinetics. The optimal composite displays a high OER activity with an overpotential of 262 mV at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming pure NiFe-LDH (290 mV). When directly spray-coated onto a Zirfon membrane to form the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM), the assembled AWE operates a cell voltage of 1.66 V at a current density of 0.5 A cm−2, which is 40 mV lower than that of pure NiFe-LDH (1.70 V), and maintains stable performance for over 351 h. This work demonstrates that the integration with conductive Ti4O7 facilitates charge transfer in NiFe-LDH-based anodes, providing a strategy for the fabrication of high-performance electrodes for AWE application.
