Construction of hierarchical NiFe-LDH/FeCoS2/CFC composites as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction

Zhang Zewu,Zhou Jiamin,Wei Hanlin,Dai Yifan,Li Shijia,Shi Haojun,Xu Gang

Abstract Efficient design and preparation of cost-effective and binder-free bifunctional electrocatalysts to accelerate the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) are critical for overall water splitting. In this work, 3D hierarchical NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC electrodes were synthesized for the first time. The carboxyl groups derived from acid treating promote the homogeneously coated FeCoS 2 on CFC, giving rise to the strongly coupled FeCoS 2 /CFC hybrid. The NiFe-LDH exhibited the vertical growth feature on the FeCoS 2 /CFC composite, which can efficiently expose the active edges sites. Due to unique structure and synergistic effect between the components, the NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC exhibits significant electrocatalytic activity and stability under alkaline environments, with overpotentials of 190 and 308 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, providing it as a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting reaction. In addition, we deeply studied the synergistic catalytic mechanism of NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC, explaining the reasons leading to the improved catalytic performance of HER and OER. Graphic abstract

In situ construction of core-shell NiFe-LDH@ZnIn2S4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction for facilitating photocatalytic H2 evolution

Gaimei Gao,Mingyu Dou,Xiaojie Liu,Erkang Liu,Zixian Wang,Guang Yang,Hua Yang,Wenning Yang,Dacheng Li,Jianmin Dou

The development of photocatalysts with non-noble metals and the effective separation of photoexcited carriers is a significant strategy for accelerating surface reaction kinetics and promoting water splitting to produce H 2 . Herein, an exquisite core-shell NiFe-LDH@ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed by in situ decoration of ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets on the surface of the flower-like NiFe-LDH microsphere . The synthesized 3D hierarchical NiFe@ZIS-25 composite exhibits enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity, reaching 9.12 mmol·h -1 ·g -1 , which is 2.52-fold higher than pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The significant improvement in H 2 evolution performance could be attributed to the hierarchical core-shell structure of the NiFe@ZIS-25 photocatalyst, which enhanced the light capture ability. In addition, the interfacial coupling effect of ZnIn 2 S 4 and NiFe-LDH is beneficial to the migration of carriers. More importantly, the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction efficiently promotes the fast translation of photogenerated carriers while preserving a stronger reduction potential to achieve H 2 evolution. This work elucidates a rational strategy to develop efficient photocatalysts with hierarchical core-shell structures for water splitting.

Construction of an Sc-NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst for highly efficient electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at industrial current density

Yufeng Wu,Zhiyan Hou,Changlong Wang

Renewable electricity-powered electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) to FDCA offers a green and sustainable approach to producing an essential monomer for bio-polymers, provided that a highly efficient electrocatalyst is present. Herein, we show that the doping of scandium (Sc) into an NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst (Sc-NiFe-LDH) considerably promotes HMFOR by enhancing the formation of high-valence NiIII–O active sites, facilitating electron transport and HMF adsorption and suppressing the oxygen evolution reaction. In the presence of the Sc-NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst, an FDCA faradaic efficiency and selectivity of 96.5% and 99.5%, respectively, were achieved at a current density of >600 mA cm−2. The high performance of the Sc-NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst is the best among those of other reported electrocatalysts for this reaction, showing great promise in upgrading biomass to valuable chemicals. This work would inspire further studies on the rational design of novel and efficient electrocatalysts for green and sustainable energy transformations.

Construction of a hydrangea-like core–shell structured GM@NiFe-LDH@PANI composite for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Xiangxiang Chen,Guoxin Ding,Yan Liu,Yunwang Xing,Weipeng Qi,Guojun Cheng

In answer to the need for materials that absorb electromagnetic waves with great efficiency, this study reports the design and synthesis of a core–shell structured GM@NiFe-LDH@PANI composite. The material exhibits outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance through multi-component synergy and multi-mechanism coupling. XRD and XPS analyses confirmed the material’s crystalline structure and chemical composition, while SEM images revealed the core–shell morphology, showing NiFe-LDH nanosheets uniformly anchored on glass microspheres (GM) surfaces, forming a hydrangea-like structure. Subsequent incorporation of polyaniline (PANI) further increased the heterojunction interface. Electromagnetic property measurements demonstrated that GNP-2 achieved optimal impedance matching at a thickness of 1.71 mm, resulting in a strong reflection loss of −52.86 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.72 GHz. The hydrangea-like NiFe-LDH structure enhances magnetic loss and promotes scattering and reflection through its porous framework, intensifying interfacial polarization effects. The conductive PANI shell, with its exposed active sites, facilitates EMW absorption through dipole polarization and conductive loss mechanisms. This core–shell porous design synergistically optimizes dielectric and magnetic losses. This composite material demonstrates considerable potential for electromagnetic compatibility applications in radar stealth, modern communication systems, and renewable energy devices.

Manganese-Copper Co-Doped NiFe-LDH Nanosheets toward Multi-Enzymatic Activities and Cascaded Synergistic Anti-Liver Tumor Therapy

Hongwei Xu,Shuairu Zhu,Walaa Al-Mathagi,Mei Yang,Wanding Cui,Xiaohua Yuan,Xuping Sun,Yonggang Wei,Binwu Ying

Primary liver cancer remains a significant global health challenge, with the majority of patients diagnosed at an unresectable stage, further complicated by liver dysfunction due to cirrhosis. To address these clinical hurdles, nanozyme-based catalytic therapy has emerged as a promising strategy. However, its therapeutic efficacy is often limited by self-protective mechanisms associated with the tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly the overexpression of glutathione (GSH) and hypoxia-induced metabolic adaptation. In this study, a quaternary medium-entropy layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanozyme, denoted as NiFeMnCu-LDH is developed. This nanozyme exhibits peroxidase-like, catalase (CAT)-like, and oxidase-like activities, facilitating the cascade generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Simultaneously, the oxygen produced by CAT mitigates hypoxia, while the glutathione peroxidase-like activity drives the depletion of tumor antioxidants, effectively reprogramming the TME. Further in vitro experiments demonstrated that efficient production of ROS and scavenging of GSH induced substantial apoptosis in liver cancer cells. Additionally, mouse liver tumor models showed robust inhibition of tumor growth without systemic toxicity. This findings provide a framework for the precise engineering of nanozymes in advanced liver cancer treatment, addressing critical barriers within the TME and offering valuable insights into a mimetic multi-enzyme synergy for translational applications.

Dynamic Migration of Ag Efficiently Modulated Electronic Structure and Impressed Chlorine Corrosion of NiFe-LDH for Seawater Oxidation

Yongping Qu,Huajun Zhou,Yuzhen Zhang,Peihua Zhao,Kai Yuan,Rui Zhou,Hui Gao,Yanzhong Wang

Seawater electrolysis is a promising route for hydrogen production. However, the elevated concentration of Cl − in seawater can cause the serious corrosion of electrode materials, which limits the large-scale application of seawater splitting for the generation of green hydrogen. Herein, nickel iron layered double hydroxide@Ag/iron foam (NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF) composites are synthesized using a two-step method at room temperature. The introduction of Ag not only induces the electron density redistribution of NiFe-LDH to promote the formation of NiFeOOH as the catalytically active sites, but also impress the corrosion of chloride ions during the seawater oxidation. The as-prepared NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF only requires a low overpotential of 255 mV at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, and it can stably operate for 1000 h without degradation. Importantly, the formed AgCl nanoparticles loaded on the surface of NiFe-LDH nanosheets can effectively prevent the corrosive effect of Cl − during the seawater oxidation process. Thus, NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF can maintain high catalytic activity and work stably for 1000 h at high current density of 500 mA cm −2 for seawater oxidation. This study presents a simple method for preparing self-supported electrocatalysts with excellent corrosion resistance and high catalytic activity in alkaline seawater oxidation.

Tuning Pt–N₂H₄ adsorption on NiFe-LDH-Supported Pt for enhanced cycling stability in ammonia electro-oxidation

Yan Zhou,Desheng Sui,Qi Yin,Hui Zhang,Jiabing Luo,Guizheng Qi,Wenhui Zhang,Hailin Ma,Jun Zhang

Ammonia has recently been recognized as a promising energy carrier for long-term and large-scale energy storage. Direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) stand out among ammonia utilization technologies due to their high theoretical energy conversion efficiency and environmental compatibility. Although Pt has been widely regarded as the most effective electrocatalyst for ammonia oxidation in alkaline media compared to other noble metals, designing composite structures of Pt to improve the AOR performance of Pt-based catalysts through carrier modulation is still the best solution for designing fuel cell anode materials at present. This work presents an electrochemical synthesis strategy for in situ reduction of [PtCl 6 ] 2− precursors into Pt nanoparticles anchored on NiFe-layered double hydroxide/nickel foam substrates. The unique structure supplies sufficient OH ad for the gradual dehydrogenation of Pt, the two-dimensional layered structure provides a vast loading space for Pt, and more importantly, the bimetallic nature of LDH modulated the electronic state of Pt and thus further regulated the adsorption state of Pt with N 2 H 4 and was verified by in situ IR spectroscopy, which facilitated the reaction towards the G-M mechanism, reduced the toxicity of the *N atoms, and improved the CV cycling stability of the catalyst. The study of the composite structure of Pt and LDH provided a new approach for the exploration of Pt composite catalysts used in the anode catalysts of DAFC.

Extraction of nickel from NiFe-LDH into Ni2P@NiFe hydroxide as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Fang-Shuai Zhang,Jia-Wei Wang,Jun Luo,Rui-Rui Liu,Zhi-Ming Zhang,Chun-Ting He,Tong-Bu Lu

The development of highly efficient, low-cost and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is highly desirable for the storage of intermittent solar energy and wind energy sources. Herein, we show for the first time that nickel can be extracted from NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) to generate an Ni2P@FePOx heterostructure. The Ni2P@FePOx heterostructure was converted to an Ni2P@NiFe hydroxide heterostructure (P-NiFe) during water splitting, which displays high electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH solution, with an overpotential of 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for HER, and overpotentials of 205, 230 and 430 mV at 10, 100 and 1000 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. Moreover, it could afford a stable current density of 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting at 1.51 V in 1.0 M KOH with long-term durability (100 h). This cell voltage is among the best reported values for bifunctional electrocatalysts. The results of theoretical calculations demonstrate that P-NiFe displays optimized adsorption energies for both HER and OER intermediates at the nickel active sites, thus dramatically enhancing its electrocatalytic activity.

Synergistic coupling of CoFe-LDH arrays with NiFe-LDH nanosheet for highly efficient overall water splitting in alkaline media

Rong Yang,Yimeng Zhou,Yingying Xing,Di Li,Deli Jiang,Min Chen,Weidong Shi,Shouqi Yuan

Developing active, stable and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with earth-abundant metals (Ni, Fe, Co) is a prerequisite to achieve overall water splitting. In this work, a novel CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) coupled with NiFe-LDH nanosheet array supported on nickel foam (denoted as CoFe@NiFe/NF) is developed through a facile hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. Remarkably, benefiting from strong synergistic effect between CoFe-LDH and NiFe-LDH and the unique structural features, the resulting CoFe@NiFe/NF architectures catalyst exhibits excellent activities and stabilities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, an efficient and stable alkali-electrolyzer using CoFe@NiFe/NF as both the cathode and anode achieve a voltage of 1.59 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is superior to many other state-of-the-art earth-abundant electrocatalysts. This work provides a facile method for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity by constructing hierarchical core-shell architectures using the LDH nanosheet materials.

Engineering the mass and electron transfer via wood‑derived TD‑COF/NiFe‑LDH interface for sustainably photocatalytic wastewater treatment

Shaofei Song,Pengfei Li,Fulin Zhou,Yang Deng,Xu Wu

TD-COF/NiFe-LDH heterojunction photocatalyst was in situ constructed on floatable carbonized wood. • Efficient degradation of broad-spectrum pollutants is achieved through pollutant enrichment and dual-pathway electron/energy transfer. • Active oxygen species are selectively generated, enabling highly efficient degradation of various antibiotics and dyes. Hierarchical TD-COF/NiFe-LDH heterojunction photocatalytic materials were constructed using natural wood‑derived carbonized wood as a carrier. The anisotropic macroporous channels of the carbonized wood serve as an efficient “water transport system,” and the heterojunction was prepared via an in‑situ growth method. The material achieves a dual synergy between mass transfer and catalysis: the vertically aligned through‑channels of the carbonized wood promote rapid adsorption and enrichment of pollutants, while its three‑dimensional conductive framework provides an efficient electron transport network. Simultaneously, the TD-COF/NiFe-LDH heterojunction interface significantly enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Mechanistic studies reveal that under visible light, the material selectively generates singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 – ). In this process, TD-COF primarily drives the energy transfer pathway for 1 O 2 , while the heterojunction structure facilitates the efficient reduction of O 2 via electron transfer. The experimental results indicated that a variety of antibiotics and dyes, including ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TC), rhodamine B (RhB), and methylene blue (MB), could be efficiently degraded through the synergistic mechanism of the material, which demonstrated excellent catalytic performance. This work provides a new strategy for designing photocatalysts based on natural biomass. Download: Download high-res image (204KB) Download: Download full-size image

Boosting Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis from Nitrate via Electrolyte Cation-Tuned NiFe-LDH Catalysts with Low-Spin Fe3+ Active Sites

Zhenyu Yan,Wenyu Gao,Junkai Wen,Biyue Xie,Jisheng Geng,Qiangqiang Jiao,Jia Liu

Ammonia (NH3) is a crucial basic raw material in agricultural and industrial production and is an ideal hydrogen carrier in future clean energy systems. The electrocatalytic synthesis of NH3 from nitrate (NO3RR) not only yields a green product but also addresses ecological pollution, serving as a mild alternative to the Haber–Bosch technique. Electrolyte cations can significantly influence the kinetics, selectivity, and energy barriers of electrocatalytic reactions by modulating the electrical double-layer structure, local electric fields, stability of reaction intermediates, and interfacial water structure. However, the influence of the electrode–electrolyte interface environment dominated by electrolyte cations is often overlooked. This study first prepared a NiFe-LS catalyst with low-spin active centers through orbital modulation and subsequently verified the effects of three different cations (Li+, Na+, and K+) on the NO3RR from aspects including charge density, intermediate interaction, and solvation effects. The results indicate that K+ has the most significant promoting effect on NH3 synthesis. The Faraday efficiency (FE) reaches a maximum of 90.60% at −0.6 V vs RHE (0.1 M K2SO4 + 500 ppm of NO3–), with a corresponding yield of 10911.11 μg/h/mgcat.. Mechanistic analysis indicates that the presence of K+ can promote the breakage of the N–O bond, reduce the reaction energy barrier, inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and increase both the interfacial electrostatic potential and the electron transfer from the catalyst to NO3–. This study elucidates the mechanism by which cations enhance the activity of the electrocatalytic interface and reveals the significance of the local reaction environment on the electrode surface for NO3RR, contributing to the further development of novel electrolytes and catalysts.

Facile fabrication and enhanced visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation performance of flower-like NiFe-LDH/PCN Z-scheme heterojunction

Xiao-qiang Feng,Min Zhou,Rui-xian Li,Yan-chi Wang,Xiao-fang Li

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions represents a highly effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCN) modulated NiFe-LDH Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (NiFe-LDH/PCN) was fabricated by hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN was assessed by degrading organic dye Congo red under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, with the optimal sample NiFe-LDH/PCN-3 achieving a 95% CR degradation rate within 90 min. The photocatalytic efficiency was 17 times higher than that of pristine PCN and 4.3 times higher than that of NiFe-LDH alone. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, facilitated by the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction between NiFe-LDH and PCN. The involvement of active species, such as superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and photogenerated holes (h⁺), was confirmed during the degradation process. The present study provides valuable insights into the design of efficient photocatalysts for environmental applications and highlights the potential of Z-scheme heterojunctions to significantly boost photocatalytic performance.
