Photoelectrochemical seawater splitting is promising for renewable hydrogen, yet severe chloride corrosion remains a roadblock. Although amorphous catalysts improve hematite ( α -Fe 2 O 3 ) photoanode activity, their defect-enabled functionality inherently accelerates structural degradation, exacerbating chloride-induced corrosion. Here, a synergistic dual-functional nano-armor is designed by anchoring phosphate (PO 4 3− ) to active sites on amorphous NiMoO 4 (a-NiMoO 4 @PO 4 3− ), achieving dual activity-stability enhancement. Detailed physicochemical characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the successful and stable anchoring of phosphate is highly dependent on the amorphous structural properties of a-NiMoO 4 . Its rich disordered coordination environment provides sufficient highly reactive sites, allowing PO 4 3− to be firmly bound through strong coordination bonds, which is the key for the dual role of PO 4 3− coordination. As a dynamic Cl − shield, PO 4 3− coordinates unsaturated Ni sites, forming an anionic layer that resists Cl − via steric-electrostatic blocking. As an electronic modulator, PO 4 3− triggers metal-to-ligand charge transfer at Ni sites, depleting electron density to optimize the intermediate adsorption of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and reduce kinetic barriers. Simultaneously, this charge redistribution induces a built-in electric field that accelerates hole-selective transport. Benefiting from these dual effects, the Fe 2 O 3 /a-NiMoO 4 @PO 4 3− achieves 4 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE with exceptional stability in seawater. This work leverages the unique coordination flexibility of amorphous structures to construct a phosphate-coordinated bifunctional nano-armor on hematite photoanodes, which simultaneously enables efficient chloride exclusion and electronic structure optimization. The synergistic mechanism, rooted in strong phosphate anchoring on amorphous carriers, establishes a new design paradigm for photoelectrochemical systems that integrate high activity with extreme environmental stability, providing an efficient pathway toward corrosion-resistant seawater splitting.

Seawater splitting powered by solar or wind sources is a significant renewable energy storage technology for the production of green hydrogen energy. However, both the chlorine evolution reaction and chloride corrosion are intractable issues in seawater splitting. Here, a porous electrode based on a phosphate-intercalated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide shell coated on a nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) micropillar core (denoted as P-NiFe@NiMoO4) is synthesized through an electrochemical oxidation strategy. During the electrochemical oxidation process, the etching of MoO2 promotes the reconstruction of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide and the formation of porous structures in an alkaline solution. The optimized P-NiFe@NiMoO4 electrocatalysts afford a low overpotential of 258 mV at a current density of 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater. By pairing the anode with a cathode of as-synthesized P-NiMoO, the electrolyzer presents a low voltage of 1.63 V at 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater with excellent stability. Moreover, the remarkable stability of the anode seems to be attributed to the in-situ phosphate formed during the electrochemical oxidation process to passivate chloride corrosion.

Electrochemical self-reconstruction is a critical process in transition metal-based electrocatalysts, as it governs the generation of catalytically active species during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In the NiMoO 4 system, γ-NiOOH is recognized as the truly active species, however, its slow and shallow reconstruction severely limits catalytic performance. Herein, a Fe doping strategy is employed to accelerate the in situ self-reconstruction kinetics of NiMoO 4 . A series of Fe-doped NiMoO 4 catalysts were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, and the influence of Fe doping on the structural evolution and catalytic mechanism of the materials was systematically investigated. Fe incorporation induces preferential exposure of low-index crystal planes and lattice distortion, which facilitates selective Mo leaching and modulates the electronic structure of Ni. This synergistic effect not only enhances the extent but also accelerates the rate of self-reconstruction, thereby promoting the formation of low-crystallinity γ-NiOOH and consequently activating the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). As a result, 30 %Fe-NiMoO 4 -R exhibits a low overpotential of 205 mV@10 mA cm −2 , with stability for 400 h at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 . This work clarifies the role of Fe doping in tuning reconstruction dynamics and provides valuable insights into the design of efficient OER catalysts via lattice oxygen activation.

The energy security and mounting environmental issues compel the scientific community to allocate greatly efficient and economical energy renovation and storage systems. Among the energy storage devices, supercapacitors have become the forefront in energy storing systems in recent decades. The efficiency of supercapacitors mainly depend on the electrode's material and they usually suffer from a quick reduction in specific capacitance at higher current densities . Herein, we combined the nano-plates like bimetallic oxides (NiMiO 4 ) with mixed valence states on the surface of a conductive substrate (carbon cloth) without any binder and additives (denoted NMO@CC). The as-prepared electrode NMO@CC showed marvelous electrochemical properties in the aqueous basic electrolyte by achieving a high capacity of 1500 C g −1 at current density of 5 A g −1 with high degree of rate capability. More interestingly, the NMO@CC electrode demonstrated excellent cycling stability of 94.63% after 5000 cycles during charge-discharge process. Further, the charge storage mechanism of NMO@CC electrode is investigated by analyzing the surface capacitive and diffusion controlled processes and it shows high surface capacitive storage (71%). These admirable results are based on the highly open channels for efficient diffusion of electrolyte ions and electronic transmission through the NMO and backbone carbon cloth, respectively. Therefore, accurate morphology and surface manufacturing engineering are highly appreciated to enhance the active surface area and inherent conductivity of electrode materials.

In this study, Ni, N-NiMoO 4 /NF, and other compared materials are synthesized as bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution (HER) and urea oxidation reactions (UOR). The results of characterizations and tests show that the electrocatalytic performance of Ni, N-NiMoO 4 /NF is higher than those of NiMoO 4 •xH 2 O/NF, Ni-NiMoO 4 •xH 2 O/NF, and N-NiMoO 4 /NF, which may be caused by the synergy between Ni, N, and NiMoO 4 . The introduction of N and Ni increases the wettability and adsorption of the material, which also increases the conductivity and catalytic performance of the material. Furthermore, it is found that the electrodeposition time of metallic nickel (Ni, N-NiMoO 4 /NF-x ( x =10, 20, 30 min)) can affect the catalytic performances of Ni, N-NiMoO 4 /NF. The results show that the Ni, N-NiMoO 4 /NF-20 shows the best bifunctional electrocatalytic activity among all prepared samples, with 176 mV towards HER and 1.444 V towards UOR at 100 mA•cm −2 , demonstrating its potential in a practical application as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen production in urea-water electrolysis.

Developing bifunctional efficient electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is in high demand for the development of overall water-splitting devices. In particular, the electrocatalytic performance can be largely improved by designing positive nanoscale-heterojunction with well-tuned interfaces. Herein, a novel top-down strategy is reported to construct the oxide/sulfide heterostructures (N-NiMoO 4 /NiS 2 nanowires/nanosheets) as a multisite HER/OER catalyst. Starting with the NiMoO 4 nanowires, nitridation in a controlled manner enables activation of Ni sites in NiMoO 4 and then yields oxide/sulfide heterojunction by directly vulcanizing the highly composition-segregated N-NiMoO 4 nanowires. The abundant epitaxial heterogeneous interfaces at atomic-level facilitate the electron transfer from N-NiMoO 4 to NiS 2 , which further cooperate synergistically toward both the hydrogen and oxygen generation in alkali solution. Furthermore, with N-NiMoO 4 /NiS 2 grown carbon fiber cloth as the engineering electrode, the assembled N-NiMoO 4 /NiS 2 –N-NiMoO 4 /NiS 2 system can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with the cell voltage of 1.60 V in the water-splitting reaction. This current density is 3.39 times higher than that of the Pt–Ir set (2.95 mA cm −2 ). The excellent catalytic performance offered of N-NiMoO 4 /NiS 2 nanowires/nanosheets presents a great example to demonstrate the significance of interface engineering in the field of electrocatalysis.

Hydroquinone (HQ) poses immeasurable risk to human health and the natural environment on the grounds of high toxicity of organic phenolic compounds. Herein, an innovative electrochemical sensor based on two-dimensional nickel molybdate nanowires (NiMoO 4 NWs) is constructed for the ultra-sensitive determination of HQ, which can provide useful reference for the human health and environment protection. Two-dimensional NiMoO 4 NWs are prepared successfully through a facile hydrothermal reaction and annealing process. The obtained two-dimensional NiMoO 4 NWs are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The accurate contents of Ni and Mo have been characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), confirming that the lower content of the nickel in NiMoO 4 NWs possesses the higher catalytic activity of HQ. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed HQ sensor exhibits satisfactory electrocatalytic activity with a low detection limit of 0.0355 μmol/L ( S/N = 3), a wide linear range of 0.05–4600 μmol/L and sensitivity of 170.064 μA/(mmol cm 2 ). The sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of HQ in rainwater, tap water, domestic sewage and drinking water samples with satisfactory recovery. At the same time, this sensor has excellent reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. The constructed sensor has potential practical application value and broad application prospect in human health and environmental monitoring.

Catalysts for the electrolysis of water are critical in the production of hydrogen for the energy industry. The use of strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) to modulate the dispersion, electron distribution, and geometry of active metals is an effective strategy for improving catalytic performance. However, in currently used catalysts, the supporting effect does not significantly contribute directly to catalytic activity. Consequently, the continued investigation of SMSI, using active metals to stimulate the supporting effect for catalytic activity, remains very challenging. Herein, the atomic layer deposition technique was employed to prepare an efficient catalyst composed of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) deposited on nickel-molybdate (NiMoO 4 ) nanorods. Nickel-molybdate’s oxygen vacancies (V o ) not only help anchor highly-dispersed Pt NPs with low loading but also strengthen the SMSI. The valuable electronic structure modulation between Pt NPs and V o resulted in a low overpotential of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, returning results of 190 mV and 296 mV, respectively, at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Ultimately, an ultralow potential (1.515 V) for the overall decomposition of water was achieved at 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming state-of-art catalysts based on the Pt/C || IrO 2 couple (1.668 V). This work aims to provide reference and a concept for the design of bifunctional catalysts that apply the SMSI effect to achieve a simultaneous catalytic effect from the metal and its support.

Amidst the escalating global energy crisis, the quest for efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting has become increasingly imperative. Herein, we develop a bifunctional electrocatalyst comprising RuNi alloy nanoparticles anchored on fluorine-doped NiMoO 4 nanorods (RuNi-F-NiMoO 4 ), engineered for efficient hydrogen production from seawater and urea oxidation reactions. The strategic F doping effectively reduces the difference in work functions and modulates the electronic interactions between the RuNi alloy and the NiMoO 4 substrate, enhancing electron transfer kinetics and significantly improving electrocatalytic activity and stability. Notably, the RuNi-F-NiMoO 4 exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction performance in both alkaline freshwater (248 mV at 1 A cm −2 ) and alkaline seawater (277 mV at 1 A cm −2 ), enabling industrial-scale high-current–density hydrogen production and maintaining durability over 1,000 h at 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater. Furthermore, RuNi-F-NiMoO 4 achieves a current density of 1 A cm −2 at a low potential of 1.59 V during the urea oxidation reaction, and facilitates a complete urea total cracking system operating at 1.88 V at 1 A cm −2 in alkaline seawater, thereby reducing energy consumption for hydrogen production. This work offers a promising avenue for the development of efficient electrocatalysts in seawater electrolysis and urea oxidation, potentially advancing sustainable energy technologies.

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit exceptional potential as candidate materials in supercapacitor applications. Nevertheless, their actual performance falls far short of expectations due to challenges such as poor electronic conductivity, insufficient electrochemical durability, and the scarcity of active sites within TMOs. Herein, we successfully synthesized a NiMoO4 nanorod@NiMn-LDH nanosheet core–shell structure onto nickel foam (NiMoO4@NiMn-LDH/NF) via a straightforward two-step hydrothermal process, achieving complementary enhancement in performance. The core–shell architecture effectively shortens ion transport pathways and exposes abundant active sites, which establish a vital basis for boosting the energy storage efficiency of devices. Additionally, the notable synergistic effect among transition-metal ions further boosts the electrochemical performance. Consequently, the NiMoO4@NiMn-LDH/NF electrode exhibits an impressive areal capacitance of 9438.4 mF cm−2 under 2 mA cm–2. Moreover, it features pre-eminent rate capability and preserves 99.9% of its capacitance over 6000 cycles. Significantly, the constructed NiMoO4@NiMn-LDH/NF//activated carbon configuration achieves a 1.2 mW h cm–2 high energy density under a 3.2 mW cm–2 power density, sustaining 95% superior capacitance retention over 7000 cycles. Our research demonstrates that the NiMoO4@NiMn-LDH core–shell nanocomposite offers an excellent and feasible strategy for the energy storage field.

While constructing hierarchical structures is an effective strategy to boost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, most existing synthesis routes still rely on high-temperature treatments. Herein, a novel 1D/2D/0D hierarchical NiMoO 4 /Ni(OH) 2 @P–Ni electrocatalyst is fabricated on nickel foam via a simple and mild two-step method involving hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent electrodeposition. The catalyst requires an overpotential of 77 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the alkaline HER and operates stably for 100 h. The high performance originates from a well-orchestrated synergy: P–Ni nanoparticles serve as highly active sites for hydrogen adsorption, while the Ni(OH) 2 component and the multi-component heterointerfaces collectively facilitate water dissociation and charge transfer. Moreover, the hierarchical structure imparts exceptional interfacial properties, including superhydrophilicity and efficient gas bubble release. This work offers a viable strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts by orchestrating multi-component synergy within a rationally engineered hierarchical architecture.

Multi-dimensional metal oxides have become a promising alternative electrode material for supercapacitors due to their inherent large surface area. Herein, P-doped NiCo 2 O 4 /NiMoO 4 multi-dimensional nanostructures are synthesized on carbon clothes (CC) with a continuous multistep strategy. Especially, P has the best synergistic effect with transition metals, such as optimal deprotonation energy and OH – adsorption energy, which can further enhance electrochemical reaction activity. For the above reasons, the P-NiCo 2 O 4 /NiMoO 4 @CC electrode exhibits an ultra-high specific capacitance of 2334.0 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . After 1500 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 , its specific capacity still maintains 93.7%. Besides, a P-NiCo 2 O 4 /NiMoO 4 @CC//activated carbon device (hybrid supercapacitor or device) was also prepared with a maximum energy density of 45.1 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 . In particular, the capacity retention rate is still 89.97% after 8000 cycles due to its excellent structural stability. Our work demonstrates the vast potential of multi-dimensional metal oxides in energy storage.
