The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts is of utmost importance for advancing electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Transition metal sulfide heterostructure electrocatalysts have been widely studied and applied in electrocatalysis due to their highly inherent activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the interface. We prepared NiS 2 /CoS 2 nanoparticle heterostructures doped with nitrogen-carbon nanotubes (CoS 2 /NiS 2 @N-CNTs) to induce the formation of bifunctional reaction sites. This design contributes to the excellent catalytic activity for electrocatalytic water splitting. The CoS 2 /NiS 2 @N-CNTs electrocatalyst exhibits prominent catalytic activities toward HER and OER, which required low overpotentials of 126 and 205 mV to yield the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The prepared electrocatalysts exhibit fast reaction kinetics with tafel slopes of 71 and 82 mV dec −1 in HER and OER, respectively. The catalyst has a larger electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 1030 cm −2 and a strong electron transfer capability with an electrochemical impedance of 41 Ω. These properties are mainly attributed to the unique heterogeneous structure of the catalyst. In addition, CoS 2 /NiS 2 @N-CNTs catalyst is used as both the cathode and anode to fabricate a two-electrode system in a 1.0 M KOH solution measured at 1.53 V. Meanwhile, the stability measurement maintains for 23 h at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with negligible degradation. This work has successfully developed an approach for rational design and novel synthesis of metal sulfide hybrids as bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for overall water splitting.

In industrial zinc electrowinning, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has sluggish kinetics leading to ultrahigh overpotential and energy consumption. Herein, a sandwich-like MnCo 2 O 4 modifying PbO 2 composite electrode was fabricated via chemical-bath-deposition and electrodeposition. Consequently, the synthesized PbO 2 electrode exhibits low Tafel slope of 0.17 V per decade and an operating potential of 1.68 V vs. SCE for 500 A m −2 in a simulated solution containing 150 g L −1 H 2 SO 4 and 50 g L −1 Zn 2+ . Compared with traditional Pb-0.76Ag alloy, the overpotential at 500 A m −2 decreased by 357 mV, which ascribe to the incorporation of MnCo 2 O 4 minoring crystal grain size and charge transfer resistance and enlarging active surface area. Furthermore, the composite electrode shows robust durability as long as 95 h at 15,000 A m −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Hence, this study offers a facile synthesis route to prepare composite electrodes for zinc electrowinning and provides deep insight into the relationship among modifying substances, microstructures, and electrocatalytic activity.

Efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are crucial for advancing energy conversion and storage technologies such as water electrolysis and metal-air batteries. However, the performance assessment of catalysts has been complicated by the diversity of material microstructures and electrochemical testing variables. In this study, the solvothermal and chemical vapor deposition methods were employed to synthesize several NiCo-based compounds with similar microstructures but incorporating different non-metal atoms (O, P, S, and Se). By ensuring a comparable density of electrochemically active sites, the influence of non-metal atoms on the electronic structure and catalytic activity were investigated. Characterization and molecular orbital theory confirmed that electronic coupling enabled the redistribution of atomic charge transfer in the NiCo 2 S 4 (NCS) sample with bridging O 2- and S 2- . Electrochemical tests of the optimal catalyst in 1 M KOH demonstrated a lower Tafel slope (111 mV dec −1 ) and higher conductivity. The catalyst required only a 353 mV overpotential to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , and the subsequent chronoamperometry displayed a 98 % retention rate over 48 h. Such insights into the selection of non-metal atom provides a pathway for designing and preparing efficient catalysts.

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) can be coupled with renewable energy power generation technology and is considered to be a highly promising hydrogen production technology. However, the acidic electrolyte environment, as well as the numerous sulfonic acid groups on the proton exchange membrane surface, can seriously corrode the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst and even cause deactivation. To develop an efficient acidic OER catalyst, the IrOx/WO3 heterostructure OER catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal-calcination method. The coordination environment of IrOx was regulated through the electronic rearrangement effect, improving the OER activity and stability of the catalyst in acidic media. The prepared IrOx/WO3 exhibits excellent OER activity in 0.5 M H2SO4, with an overpotential of only 260 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a mass activity of 176.8 A gIr−1. It can stably operate for over 12 hours at a current density of j = 10 mA cm−2.

Water electrolysis is a promising path to the industrialization development of hydrogen energy. The exploitation of high-efficiency and inexpensive catalysts become important to the mass use of water decomposition. Ni-based nanomaterials have exhibited great potential for the catalysis of water splitting, which have attracted the attention of researchers around the world. Here, we prepared a novel Mo-doped NiFe-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) with a nanoarray microstructure on Ni foam. The doping amount of Mo can significantly change the microstructure of the electrocatalysis, which will further affect the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of water splitting. This novel nanomaterial required only an overpotential of 227 mV for 10 mA cm−2and a Tafel slope of 54.8 mV/dec in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, there was no Mo, and the NiFe-LDH needed 233 mV to attain to 10 mA cm−2. Compared to the NiFe-LDH without Mo, the NiFeMo-LDH nanosheet arrays exhibited enhanced activities with 17.1 mV/dec less Tafel in OER. The good performance of the electrocatalyst is ascribed to the special nanosheet arrays and the heterostructure of the Ni-Fe-Mo system. These features help to increase the active surface, enhancing the efficient charge transfer and the reactive activity in OER.

Transition metal sulfides (TMS) have drawn increasing research interest owing to their unique electronic structure. They hold broad prospects in accelerating the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water electrolysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) feature controllable electronic structures and specific surface areas, which facilitate the adsorption of reactants and expedite interfacial electron transfer. Leveraging the above-mentioned advantages of the two materials, a kind of composite electrocatalyst, CuCo 2 S 4 @MIL-53(Fe)/NF, was synthesized by growing MIL-53(Fe) in-situ onto CuCo 2 S 4 nanowires supported on nickel foam. This composite electrocatalyst can accelerate charge transfer, significantly increase the number of active sites, and enhance both electrocatalytic activity and stability. The electrocatalyst CuCo 2 S 4 @MIL-53(Fe)/NF can drive the OER with an overpotential of 390 mV at a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 . Moreover, it still demonstrates excellent catalytic activity after 75 h of testing. This study not only broadens the avenues for sulfide composites but also provides an experimental basis and support for the direct combination of metal chalcogenides and Fe-based MOFs as electrocatalysts.

Due to their distinctive electronic configuration, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) display remarkable catalytic ability in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Several strategies have been proposed to increase the catalytic efficiency of TMPs, including heteroatom doping, morphology design, and interface engineering. In this study, CoP hollow nanoflower clusters doped with trace amounts of Fe (Fe–CoP nanoFC) were synthesized via a template-based hydrothermal reaction and high-temperature phosphatization. Compared with those of Fe 2 P and CoP, the OER and HER overpotentials (@10 mA cm −2 ) of the Fe–CoP nanoFC in alkaline solution (pH = 14) were 269 mV and 203 mV, respectively, outperforming those of commercial RuO 2 (326 mV) and 20% Pt/C (221 mV). The overall water electrolysis voltage with the Fe–CoP nanoFC as both HER and OER catalysts was 1.671 V (@10 mA cm −2 ), outperforming the 1.736 V achieved with commercialized Pt/C || RuO 2 . Furthermore, the voltage remained stable during the 14 h of galvanostatic water electrolysis, indicating the potential for long-term stability. Trace Fe doping facilitates the construction of abundant Fe 2 P/CoP heterojunctions, effectively modulates the charge distribution at the interface, and consequently enhances the OER/HER catalytic efficiency of CoP nanoFCs. DFT calculations indicate that the CoP/Fe 2 P heterojunction interface has a higher d-band center and greater local charge density. These properties increase the adsorption strength of OH∗, O∗ and OOH∗, reduce the free energy of adsorption of hydrogen atoms and improve the stability of H∗. As a result, the catalysts exhibit considerable catalytic capacity for the OER and HER.

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media limits the efficiency of water electrolysis, particularly for layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Here, we construct a CeO 2 /NiFe LDH multilevel nanoflower heterostructure via interfacial engineering. The formation of the CeO 2 /NiFe LDH heterointerface induces electronic redistribution, while the CeO 2 nanoflower architecture anchors NiFe LDH nanosheets, increasing structural stability. As a result, CeO 2 -0.4/NiFe LDH delivers 100 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of only 259 mV, outperforming pristine NiFe LDH (289 mV), and maintains stable operation for over 100 h. Furthermore, it exhibits strong resistance to Cl – corrosion during seawater electrolysis and demonstrates high efficiency and durability in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) under industrially relevant conditions.

Developing cost-efficient, eco-friendly and high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important to practical implementation of energy technologies like water electrolysis and rechargeable metal−air batteries. Spinel-type complex oxides exhibit significant potential as electrocatalysts for OER, attributed to their natural abundance, structural diversity, compositional flexibility, and exceptional stability. Therefore, we develop a Hofmann-type CP-derived approach to synthesize porous NiFe 2 O 4 nanosheets (NSs) involving the precipitation of precursors and thermal decomposition under precise temperature. The fabricated NiFe 2 O 4 NSs have well-preserved the original sheet-like morphology, and have also created plentiful pores and oxygen vacancies. Electrochemical results indicate that the obtained NiFe 2 O 4 NSs exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance with smaller overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , Tafel slope of 51.5 mV dec −1 , and remarkable long-term stability in alkaline electrolytes compared to commercial RuO 2 . The present synthetic strategy provides a feasible pathway for preparing other diverse metal oxides with well-defined porous nanostructures for energy applications.

The design of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution remains a critical challenge. Recent advances have demonstrated that synergistic microstructure engineering and electrical resistance modulation can dramatically enhance the intrinsic activity and stability of acidic OER electrocatalysts. In this work, we systematically investigate the impact of fabrication methodology on the structure, morphology, and electrocatalytic properties of Co 3 O 4 catalysts. Three representative techniques—ink-spraying, dip-coating, and drop-casting—were compared using a unified precursor and substrate framework. The ink-sprayed Co 3 O 4 catalyst exhibits superior performance, achieving an overpotential of 386 mV at 100 mA·cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 51.5 mV·dec −1 , and exceptional durability over 165 h at 10 mA·cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a notable increase in the Co 2+ /Co 3+ ratio and oxygen-vacancy concentration after long-term operation, indicating surface reconstruction and enhanced redox flexibility. Notably, the relative contribution of the oxygen-vacancy (O V ) component increases from 20.9% in the pristine state to 28.2% after 24 h of OER operation. The uniform nanostructure, improved conductivity, and robust film adhesion endow the ink-sprayed electrode with both enhanced activity and stability, outperforming the dip-coated and drop-cast counterparts as well as most state-of-the-art Co-based OER catalysts reported in the literature. Furthermore, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis confirms minimal metal leaching, highlighting the catalyst’s structural integrity and long-term stability. This work underscores the crucial role of fabrication methodology in tailoring catalytic performance and establishes ink-spraying as an efficient strategy for engineering high-performance Co 3 O 4 catalysts suitable for acidic water electrolysis applications. In this paper, sodium sulfite (Na₂SO₃) and cerium nitrate (Ce(NO₃)₃) were added in the hydrothermal method for the preparation of FeCo LDH, and needle-like Ce-FeCo LDH (NS) catalysts were grown in situ on a carbon cloth. The additions of Na₂SO₃ and Ce(NO₃)₃ regulated the electron transfer of the metal cations in the LDH, and significantly improved the performance of the catalysts. The prepared Ce-FeCo LDH (NS) catalysts exhibited excellent electrochemical properties. The overpotential of OER was 221 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm² in 1 M KOH. The surface structure and catalytic performance of the catalysts were maintained well after 100 h stability test. This study provides a new idea for the improvement and design of OER catalysts based on FeCo LDH, which is an important reference for clean energy research.

This study developed a ternary Ni₆Fe₂Co₂/NF-VC nanoparticle cluster material, aiming to enhance the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and achieve excellent water decomposition performance. A self-supported anode was fabricated via one-electrode reduction synthesis for the OER active site, which exhibits significant catalytic activity due to its unique surface restructuring process and controlled electronic structure. The results demonstrate that this anode has outstanding intrinsic catalytic activity in anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis: at 10 mA/cm² current density, the overpotential is as low as 203 mV, with a Tafel slope of 19.69 mV/dec. Under industrial testing conditions (500 mA/cm²), the anode requires only 1.98 V to operate stably and maintains stable operation for 50 hours under continuous cycling. Pressure loss analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies reveal that the rate-controlling step of the OER reaction is the mass transfer process. The improved catalytic material achieves enhanced dynamic and transport performance through the construction of favorable gas-liquid transfer channels and electronic transfer pathways, effectively reducing kinetic and diffusion limitations in the electrolysis system. This study provides a novel approach for designing highly efficient and stable water decomposition catalysts.
