Biomimetic synthesis of a micro/nano-structured basic magnesium carbonate: Green and highly efficient flame-retardant PBAT composite material

Jiaying Xu,Zhenfeng Cheng,Fuhao Yu,Zhimin Song,Jing Fang,Hao Li,Bibo Wang,Yuan Hu

Poly (butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable and environmentally friendly material. However, due to its flammability and the formation of molten droplets during combustion, green flame retardants need to be added to enhance fire safety while maintaining environmental friendliness. In this work, a rod-shaped magnesium hydroxide carbonate (BMC) was synthesized as a flame retardant and combined with the bio-based phytic acid melamine supramolecular (PM). The micrometer-sized rod-shaped BMC acts as the “corn cob”, while the spherical particles formed by PM supramolecules act as the “corn kernels”. They are structurally locked together through acid-base neutralization, forming a unique “corn-like” hetero-sized assembly structure (PMBMC). When 20 wt% PMBMC is added to PBAT, the composite material passes the UL-94 test and the LOI reaches 28.8 %. Meanwhile, it can reduce PHRR, THR, and MARHE by 82.9 %, 12.2 %, and 69.1 %. Additionally, SP, CO 2 P, and COP are reduced by 92.7 %, 81.3 %, and 82.6 %, respectively. Moreover, compared with the unmodified flame retardant, the Eb and Ts of PBAT/PMBMC increase by 13.6 %, and 51.6 % due to the hydrogen bond. In conclusion, this study provides a new idea for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly PBAT green material flame retardant and smoke suppressant by using natural bio-based materials.

A biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) composite aerogel for continuous oil-water separation

Xinkai Sun,Xinying Jiang,Fei Xie,Pengju Yao,Yi Zhang,Hui Yang,Carla Bittencourt,Wenjiang Li

In the context of sustainable development, the exploration of renewable, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly polymer aerogels have emerged as a significant area of research. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of fully degradable polylactic acid (PLLA)/poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) composite aerogels via 1,4-dioxane-assisted co-dissolution, followed by freeze-drying and phase separation techniques. The resulting aerogels feature a hierarchically porous structure with 98.6% porosity and vertically aligned channels, formed by controlled solvent crystallization during the freezing process. This unique architectural configuration integrates PLLA's oil-retention capability with PBAT's elasticity, yielding adsorption capacities of 13.6 g/g for n-hexane and 31.5 g/g for carbon tetrachloride. Notably, the aerogel retains ~97.5% stress and height recovery after 100 cycles of 50% strain compression, overcoming pure PLLA's inherent brittleness. It also maintains 96.5% the oil-water separation efficiency after 20 c centrifugal desorption cycles. 1,4-Dioxane promotes the compatibility of PLLA and PBAT, improving the interfacial compatibility and effectively avoiding the structural defects usually caused by phase separation. This research provides a scalable, filler-free approach to fabricate the high-performance biodegradable aerogels, bridging environmental sustainability and practical functionality for oily wastewater remediation.

Modified cellulose nanocrystals based on SI-ATRP for enhancing interfacial compatibility and mechanical performance of biodegradable PLA/PBAT blend

Minqi Sun,Ling Zhang,Chunzhong Li

To make up for the brittleness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA), people usually introduce flexible poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) which greatly reduces the strength and limits toughening effect due to unfavorable immiscibility of the blends. Herein, functionalized biodegradable cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as enhancement to simultaneously improve strength and toughness of PLA/PBAT blend. To improve the interaction between PLA and PBAT, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was grafted on the surface of CNC via a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization reaction. After the addition of CNC-PGMA30, the phase size of PLA/PBAT (70/30 wt%) reduces dramatically, showing improved interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT. Meanwhile, prepared PLA/PBAT/CNC1.0-PGMA30 composite has tensile strength of 49.6 MPa and elongation at break of 268.5%, demonstrating considerably increased strength and toughness in comparison to the pure PLA/PBAT blend.

Fiber treatment impact on toughness and interfacial bonding in epoxidized soya bean oil compatibilized PLA/PBAT bamboo fiber composites

Kehinde Olonisakin,Huiping Lin,Pan Haojin,Wen Aishi,Haopeng Wang,Ran Li,Zhang Xin-Xiang,Wenbin Yang

Biodegradable plastics such as Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) are commonly used in composite fabrication and applications. However, their inherent properties limit their use. In this study, Epoxidised soyabean oil (ESO) compatibilized PLA/PBAT was filled with modified bamboo fiber (BF). The BF was modified in a two-stage environmentally friendly process involving steam treatment followed by a new approach to hydrophobic natural fiber modification with naturally occurring fatty acid (myristic acid) (MA). Then, the ESO/PLA/PBAT/BF composite was fabricated, and the influence of the new fiber modification method on the toughness and interface bonding of the composite was studied. The composite was characterized using mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), water contact angle measurement, and statistical methods. The melting behavior was also studied using Vicat softening and heat deflection temperatures. The ESO compatibilisation improved the compatibility of the PLA/PBAT blend, resulting in a continuous PLA/PBAT phase, as evidenced by the interface modulus, glass transition temperature , and fractured surface. The modification of BF enhanced its dispersion in the matrix and improved interfacial adhesion. Elongation at break and impact toughness were improved by more than double compared to neat PLA. Adding PBAT and modified BF to PLA resulted in a thermally stable composite. The statistical analysis results suggested that BF modification and BF loading significantly influenced the composite strength and toughness (P ≤ 0.05). The tough and flexible composite material can used in flexible/lightweight and impact-resistant applications, consumer goods, and heat shields.

1, 3‐Propanediol (PDO)-based biodegradable copolyesters with elevated Tg, improved mechanical properties and spinnability as intrinsic alternatives to PBAT

Chang Liu,Yuming Cui,Yunbo Mo,Qian Xu,Kai Wang,Jianwu Lan,Shaojian Lin

Commercial poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a biodegradable aromatic–aliphatic copolyester, is considered a promising alternative to conventional plastics in various fields. However, its relatively low mechanical strength and low glass transition temperature (T g ) often restricts broader applications. In this study, bio-based 1,3-propanediol (PDO) was employed to completely replace 1,4-butanediol in PBAT, and a series of poly(trimethylene terephthalate- co -trimethylene adipate) (PPAT) copolyesters were synthesized via melt polycondensation. Structural characterization confirmed the targeted copolyester compositions and random chain segments (R ≈ 1), with intrinsic viscosities of 0.89-1.01 dL/g. Crystallographic analysis revealed that the crystallinity of PPATs varied with the adipic acid/dimethyl terephthalate molar ratio while preserving a monoclinic crystal structure. Notably, PPAT55 exhibited a significantly higher T g (−7.8 °C) than PBAT (−26.1 °C), and all copolyesters showed good thermal stability for melt processing. Importantly, PPAT55 fibers achieved a tensile strength of 0.71 cN/dtex after threefold drawing, representing a 51.06% enhancement over PBAT fibers. Furthermore, the increased aliphatic segment content promoted by hydrolytic susceptibility, as demonstrated by enzymatic degradation tests, with PPAT55 showing a 9.93% mass loss after 42 days, demonstrating satisfactory biodegradability comparable to PBAT. The degradation mechanism was further elucidated at the molecular level through theoretical calculations. This work provides a feasible strategy for developing high-performance sustainable polyester materials with good spinnability.

Bimetallic Co/Fe-MOF derived from poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) plastic wastes for efficient interfacial solar steam generation

Shuyu Liu,Liang Tian,Lihua Han,Qing Li,Liangliang Zhu,Su Chen

The conversion of waste plastics into metal-organic framework (MOF) photothermal materials presents promising opportunities for solar energy conversion, facilitating freshwater production and water purification through interfacial solar evaporation, and simultaneously heralding advancements in plastic waste recycling. Herein, we present a bimetallic Co/Fe-MOF photothermal converting material derived from PBAT-based plastic wastes, tailored for efficient solar water evaporation. The nanosheet-structured bimetallic Co/Fe-MOF featuring high light absorption, water wettability and photothermal conversion efficiency delivers an optimal evaporation rate of 1.81 kg m −2  h −1 under one sun irradiation, surpassing that of monometallic MOFs. Moreover, we employed three substrates—nanofiber film, aerogel, and hydrogel—to immobilize the Co/Fe-MOF solar absorbers, thereby constructing monolithic hybrid solar evaporators. These substrates not only confer the flexibility to Co/Fe-MOF solar absorbers for practicability but also serve as mediates to regulate thermal management and water states. Consequently, the hybrid evaporators exhibited significantly enhanced evaporation rates, with the hydrogel evaporator achieving to ~3.53 kg m −2  h −1 , coupled with remarkable salt resistance and durability. This bimetallic Co/Fe-MOF-based solar evaporator efficiently serves a dual purpose, enhancing clean water production through solar desalination and purification while also presenting a viable alternative to the issue of plastic waste, potentially harmonizing energy, environment and clean water nexus.

Utilizing poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) as a reinforcing additive to produce high-performance and biodegradable PBAT blends tailored for foaming applications

Jinyun Cui,Huaping Wang,Xinyi Chen,Ze Kan,Zhibo Li

Poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is recognized for its advantages as a biodegradable thermoplastic polyester. However, its application is often limited due to low strength and poor processability. In contrast, poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB) emerges as a fully biodegradable polyester characterized by high strength, excellent toughness, and facile processing. In this study, P4HB was employed to reinforce PBAT, and glycidyl methacrylate grafted onto poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB-g-GMA) was introduced as an effective compatibilizer to address their inherent incompatibility. The study explored the influence of P4HB-g-GMA content on the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and rheological properties of the blends. The findings revealed that P4HB-g-GMA significantly enhanced the compatibility, mechanical properties, and melt strength of PBAT/P4HB blends. Furthermore, various PBAT/P4HB foams were prepared through a batch foaming process, employing supercritical CO 2 as a physical foaming agent. The volume expansion ratio and cell size of PBAT/P4HB foams increased with higher levels of the compatibilizer.

An intelligent polybutylene terephthalate adipate (PBAT)-based packaging film incorporating functionalized chitin microcapsules as a freshness indicator for shrimp monitoring

Honghui Guo,Jie Zhang,Jian Gao,Ziyu Liang,Wei Li,Hong Yan,Ruijie Guo,Huifang Wang

In this study, chitin microcapsules were synthesized via the sol-gel method and subsequently functionalized through the encapsulation of curcumin and alizarin. These microcapsules were then incorporated into a polybutylene terephthalate adipate (PBAT) matrix at varying ratios to fabricate active smart packaging membranes. Microscopic morphology (SEM) analysis revealed that the microcapsules exhibited an ovoid morphology. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) analyses showed that curcumin/alizarin does not alter the crystal structure of the microcapsules and that there are hydrogen bonding interactions with the microcapsules. To enhance antimicrobial performance, zinc oxide nanoparticles (5 wt%) were introduced into the composite film. Notably, the composite film with a microencapsulation content of 3 wt% exhibited an inhibition rate of 95.7 % and 98.3 % against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. Finally, the composite films were assessed for their ability to monitor shrimp freshness. The results indicated that the films not only extended the shelf life of shrimp but also functioned as an effective freshness indicator by signaling spoilage.

Preparation of PLA/PBAT/Anthocyanins@ZIF-8 Composite Films via Casting Method and Their Antibacterial Activity and Application for Pork Preservation

Sheng Liu,Feifei Wang,Shuran Xing,Guifang Chang,Shijie Li,Jianwen Bu,He Zhu,Litao Wang

Pork is highly perishable during storage, leading to enormous economic losses and potential food safety hazards. Anthocyanins (ANTs) possess excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities, but their poor stability in practical applications limits their industrial application. To address these issues, a novel composite preservation film was prepared by the four-sided applicator solution casting method, using polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) as matrix materials and ANTs@ZIF-8 as functional filler. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) encapsulated ANTs to enhance its stability and achieve sustained release, while the PLA/PBAT was selected for its good biodegradability, mechanical and barrier properties. The structure and properties of the PLA/PBAT/ANTs@ZIF-8 composite films were investigated, and the results showed that ANTs@ZIF-8 nanoparticles had stable dispersibility in the matrix, which effectively improved the compatibility between nanoparticles and the film matrix. The prepared composite films exhibited excellent tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EAB) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), as well as good antibacterial activity againstE. coliandS. aureus. Furthermore, the practical pork preservation performance of the films was investigated, and the results demonstrated that the composite films could effectively reduce the pH value, water loss, color difference, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of fresh pork during storage, successfully extending the shelf life of pork to 12 days. This study develops a multifunctional, biosafe, and biodegradable PLA/PBAT composite film incorporated with ANTs@ZIF-8, providing a feasible strategy and scientific reference for the design and development of high-performance active biodegradable packaging materials.

Zefeng Li,Jing Xu,Pingbo Zhang,Mingming Fan,Pingping Jiang,Shijun Chen,Xunxun Sheng

Conventional food packaging plastics are difficult to degrade under natural conditions, causing long-lasting environmental harm. With the aim of addressing this problem, this study develops a novel biodegradable composite food packaging film based on polybutylene adipate-terephthalate (PBAT) and polyurethane (PU). MOF-5 nanoparticles are prepared via the ambient temperature precipitation method and modified with gallic acid (GA). PBAT/PU/GA@MOF-5 composite films are fabricated by the solvent casting method. The findings demonstrate that the introduction of GA@MOF-5 enhances the compatibility between PBAT and PU and reduces phase separation; therefore, it augments the mechanical performance of the resultant composite films. These composite films manifest excellent mechanical, thermal degradation, and antioxidant properties, performing remarkably in apple freshness tests. Furthermore, the incorporation of GA@MOF-5 endows the films with significant antimicrobial activity, showing restraint on the proliferation of both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). This study offers an innovative idea for biodegradable food packaging materials design and expands the application prospect of the PBAT/PU composite system in the food packaging field. Graphical Multifunctional degradable food packaging film based on PBAT/PU/GA@MOF-5.

Construction of a Layered-Cavity Structure via Spin-Coating a PEDOT:PSS/PEO/SWCNT Suspension onto PBAT/MWCNT Electrospun Films and the Enhanced Electromagnetic Shielding Performance

Min Zhao,Fahu Yang,Dinggao Wang,Chao Zhang,Shaomin Zhou,Lin Li,Zhongming Li,Haili Zhao,Tao Chen

The development of porous films with biodegradability, high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and thermal conducting performance for advanced electronics is urgent. Herein, a superthin and flexible film composed of PBAT/MWCNT and PEDOT:PSS/PEO/SWCNT is fabricated through combining electrospinning and spin-coating. In this work, the content of PEO and SWCNT should be controlled to 1 and 10 wt % for achieving the optimal layered-cavity structure within the film, guaranteeing the proper flow ability of the suspension. The robustly constructed layered-cavity structure within the film allows the electromagnetic waves to suffer multiple reflections, which enhances the EMI shielding performance. Meanwhile, the structure also plays an important role in promoting the electric and heat conduction of the film. Consequently, the film with a thickness of 0.14 mm exhibits the most optimal EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of 26.02 dB, electrical conductivity of 40.371 S/m, and thermal diffusion coefficient of 0.124 mm2/s. The EMI SE/thickness is about 185.86 dB/mm, attaining a cutting-edge level compared to reported polymer-based films. Besides, the PEO or SWCNT content should be controlled, and the two-side spin-coating is also needed for thicker films. This work offers a method to develop superthin biodegradable films with excellent performance, positioning it as a strong alternative for flexible electronics.

The extractable non-volatile organic compounds from PLA/PBAT-starch blend biodegradable food contact materials and the effect of polymeric contents: Insights from chemical space

Fei Xie,Hanke Li,Jinxin Liang,Zhenwei Liu,Tongmei Ma,Canghao Xie,Ben Dong,Dan Li,Sheng Chen,Huai-Ning Zhong

574 NVOCs comprising 367 oligomers identified in 70 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch FCMs. • Chemical spaces reveal distinct yet characteristic distribution patterns for the oligomers. • PLS-DA discloses intrinsic connections between the NVOCs and the sample categories. • The contents of 142 NVOCs change monotonously with the PBAT/PLA contents. • 16 high-risk NVOCs are prioritized with 14 of them being carcinogenic or genotoxic. The burgeoning demand for biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) based on polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and starch arouses increasing chemical safety concerns, yet the non-volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) therein remain insufficiently investigated. Herein, 574 NVOCs were identified in 24 batches of blend pellets with designated polymeric contents and 46 batches of PLA/PBAT-starch-based food contact articles (FCAs) by dissolution-precipitation coupled with untargeted liquid chromatography – high resolution mass spectrometry, and exhibited characteristic distribution patterns in the molecular-descriptor-derived chemical spaces. Chemometric analyses further identified the oligomers as essential markers to differentiate samples of various categories. Furthermore, the contents of 142 NVOCs were found to correlate with PBAT contents, due to either inherent presence in the polymers or starch-induced transformation. In addition, hazard identification unveiled that molecule complexity (FMF) of the NVOCs was a statistically significant indicator of chemical hazards, and subsequent risk assessment identified 16 potentially high-risk NVOCs, wherein 14 of them are subjected to carcinogenic or genotoxic risk, and 10 of them are identified via migration assays. This work presents an effective paradigm for uncovering the sophisticated chemical profile of biodegradable FCMs, thus being beneficial to fostering the chemical safety of FCMs and related products.
