In-Situ construction of metal-free 1D/2D PCHO/PCN Z-scheme heterojunction towards enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Baogang Fu,Nan Su,Yun Wang,Xiangtong Zhou,Yidong Hu,Hongjun Dong,Chunmei Li

In order to achieve the sustainable production of hydrogen fuel, the heterogeneous photocatalysts with inimitable structure are always desired for the high-efficiency and stable H 2 production reaction from water splitting owing to the perfect structure–activity relationship. In this study, a novel metal-free one-dimensional/two-dimensional (1D/2D) heterojunction is constructed by a series of dissolution and diffusion, recrystallization and in-situ growth, and self-assembly process of 1-pyrene carboxaldehyde (PCHO) nanoribbons on the surface of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) nanosheets. The obtained 1D/2D heterojunction can realize fast carrier transport along 1D nanoribbons to prevent the recombination of photogenerated carriers at the interface. Furthermore, the intrinsic Z-scheme reaction mechanism within the heterostructure also effectively inhibits electron-hole recombination and isolates the reduction and oxidation sites of the photocatalytic reaction. As a result, the dramatically enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) activity is achieved over the 1%-PCHO/PCN sample, the optimal PHE rate of which is approximately 5.4 times that of pure PCN . This work provides the deep insight into the design and exploitation of metal-free heterojunction with unique structure applied in the photocatalytic energy conversion field.

Specific and enzyme-free monitoring of propiconazole pesticide residues in vegetables with a portable nanozyme-based paper sensor

Xu Xu,Tongxin Sun,Xinyue Zhou,Zhuang Liu,Lei Zhang

The nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor shows promise for rapid pesticide detection but struggles with non-specific enzyme inhibition. This study developed a portable paper-based sensor for detecting the propiconazole (PC) pesticide using Fe@PCN-224 nanocubes (NCs). Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of Fe@PCN-224 NCs, which displayed peroxidase-like activity. The specific interaction between PC's triazole ring and the Fe active site inhibited their activity, enabling selective detection with a limit of 8 × 10 −9  mol L −1 and a linear range of 0.03 × 10 −6 to 0.90 × 10 −6  mol L −1 . Kinetic studies revealed a Michaelis-Menten constants ( K m ) of 0.68 × 10 −3  mol L −1 for TMB, indicating higher affinity in Fe@PCN-224 NCs. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed the production of •OH, 1 O 2 , O 2 • − during the catalytic reactions. By integrating smartphone technology, this portable sensor achieved recoveries from vegetable samples between 94.6 % and 109.2 %, demonstrating its potential as an accurate, cost-effective analytical tool for food safety and advancing nanozyme applications.

Bidirectional electron transfer enabled by dual electric fields for efficient 4-nitrophenol removal on a bifunctional FeCoNiP/PCN heterojunction

Yan Wang,Chang Liu,Rong Fu,Chao Wang,Xin Chong,Yuqi Shi,Yuelan Zhang

Although extensive research has explored modulating the built-in electric field (BIEF) and interfacial dipole electric field (IDEF) individually, a strategy leveraging their synergistic interplay for bidirectional electron regulation remains scarcely explored. Herein, a bifunctional FeCoNiP/P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (FeCoNiP/PCN) heterojunction was constructed and confirmed by TEM analysis. XPS and DFT analyses confirmed the co-existence of synergistic dual electric fields: a BIEF directed from PCN to FeCoNiP and an oppositely oriented IDEF, which cooperatively establish a bidirectional charge-transfer channel. This unique dual-field configuration drove highly efficient spatial charge separation, as evidenced by significantly quenched photoluminescence (PL), diminished charge-transfer resistance (EIS), and a markedly enhanced photocurrent response. The synergistic electric fields enabled bidirectional electron flow, thus enabling the simultaneous photooxidation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and its selective reduction to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The optimized FeCoNiP/PCN heterojunction showed significantly enhanced catalytic performance, achieving a 91 % degradation of 4-NP within 1.5 h with a rate constant 4 times and 25 times higher than pristine PCN and FeCoNiP, respectively. Moreover, it exhibited bifunctional performance, reducing 100 mg/L 4-NP nearly completely to 4-AP within only 4 min. The superior performance is primarily attributed to the synergistic interplay between the BIEF and IDEF, which efficiently lowers energy barriers and orchestrates directional electron transfer, as elucidated by combined experiments and theory. This study proposes a feasible strategy to regulate bidirectional electron flow via synergistic dual electric fields in heterojunctions, which opens a new avenue for designing high-performance bifunctional catalysts to tackle complex environmental issues.

Facile fabrication and enhanced visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation performance of flower-like NiFe-LDH/PCN Z-scheme heterojunction

Xiao-qiang Feng,Min Zhou,Rui-xian Li,Yan-chi Wang,Xiao-fang Li

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions represents a highly effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCN) modulated NiFe-LDH Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (NiFe-LDH/PCN) was fabricated by hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN was assessed by degrading organic dye Congo red under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the obtained NiFe-LDH/PCN exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, with the optimal sample NiFe-LDH/PCN-3 achieving a 95% CR degradation rate within 90 min. The photocatalytic efficiency was 17 times higher than that of pristine PCN and 4.3 times higher than that of NiFe-LDH alone. The significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, facilitated by the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction between NiFe-LDH and PCN. The involvement of active species, such as superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and photogenerated holes (h⁺), was confirmed during the degradation process. The present study provides valuable insights into the design of efficient photocatalysts for environmental applications and highlights the potential of Z-scheme heterojunctions to significantly boost photocatalytic performance.

Signal-enhanced ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical immunosensor for detecting Aflatoxin B1 based on phage-anti-immunocomplex peptide and PCN-224@MXene

Wenxu Song,Xinrui Cao,Wendi Yue,Fengchun Zhao,Qing Zhou,Zhengyou Yang

As a carcinogenic mycotoxin, Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is widespread in grains. In particular, corn-derived feed and food are more heavily contaminated with AFB1 than other grain products, which pose severe risks to food safety and human health. Thus, developing rapid, sensitive, and accurate AFB1 detection methods is of great importance. In this study, a highly sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for detecting AFB1 based on phage-anti-immunocomplex peptide and the PCN-224@MXene composite was developed. The prepared phage-anti-immunocomplex peptide could bind to a large number of enzyme-labeled secondary antibodies, thereby greatly increasing the loading capacity of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Moreover, the PCN-224@MXene showed wider light absorption range and narrower band gap, which is conducive to improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency. This resulted in the photocurrent intensities of PCN-224@MXene being 1.9-fold and 2.5-fold higher than those of PCN-224 and MXene, respectively. In addition, HRP catalyzed the oxidation of 4-Chloro-1-naphthol by H 2 O 2 to product an insulating precipitate, which hindered photo-induced electron transport, and thereby lead to a distinct photocurrent change. Using the multi-signal amplification strategy, the sensitivity of the PEC immunosensor for detecting AFB1 was significantly enhanced. Under the optimal detection conditions, the linear range was from 1 fg mL -1 to 100 ng mL -1 , and the detection limit was as low as 0.91 fg mL -1 (3σ/S). This LOD was considerably lower than the regulatory limit for AFB1 in corn. This method showed good selectivity, stability and reproducibility, and could be applied to the detection of AFB1 in corn samples.

Smart pyraclostrobin nanopesticides based on chitosan- and pectin-gated metal–organic framework PCN-777 for boosted efficacy and biosafety

Xiaona Li,Jincan Liu,Yue Yang,Jiangtao Dong,Xuezhong Du

Controlled-release nanopesticides based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have aroused broad interests. PCN-777, the Zr-MOF with the largest mesopores, can host the bulky broad-spectrum fungicide pyraclostrobin (Pyr). Nanoscale PCN-777 was prepared and then capped with pectin and chitosan through coordination interactions and electrostatic interactions/hydrogen bonds, respectively, to create double-gated nanofungicides. The double gatekeepers had substantial capping effect to inhibit early release of Pyr. The loading capacity of Pyr reached 25.9 % due to the large mesopores of PCN-777, higher than those in other Pyr-loaded MOF nanofungicides. The smart nanofungicides achieved the pH-, pectinase-, phosphate-, phytic acid-responsive controlled release of Pyr, which is closely associated with the physiological factors of pathogens and plants, and these stimuli-responsive mechanisms were explicitly elaborated. The nanofungicides protected Pyr from UV photolysis thanks to the shielding effect of PCN-777 organic ligands. The nanofungicides showed good fungicidal activity against fungi Fusarium graminearum (wheat head blight) and control effect of wheat powdery mildew triggered by Erysiphe graminis through foliar spray and seed coating, in comparison with commercial pesticide formulations. In terms of target plant growth biosafety, the nanofungicides improved wheat seed germination, seedling emergence, and seedling height by 10 %, 13 %, and 5 %, respectively, relative to the commercial formulation. In terms of non-target organism biosafety, the median lethal concentrations of the nanofungicides toward zebrafish were 3.6–5.7 times those of the commercial formulation, besides honeybees and human normal cells. The smart controlled-release nanofungicides have good prospective applications in the sustainable increase of agricultural products.

Rational Design of PCN/Ce-MOF S-Scheme Heterojunction for Highly Efficient Synergistically Photocatalytic H2 Evolution and Tetracycline Degradation

Quan Xiang,Linzhu Zhang,Lu Chen,Ruowen Liang,Renkun Huang,Guiyang Yan

Catalytic systems that couple pollutant degradation with hydrogen evolution have attracted significant attention due to their potential to simultaneously address environmental and energy issues. In this study, an S-scheme heterojunction composed of lamellar polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) anchored with a rod-like cerium metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF) was successfully synthesized via a facile one-step oxidation method, enabling efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and simultaneous tetracycline degradation. The optimized PCN/Ce-MOF composite delivers a hydrogen production rate of 495.7 μmol g−1h−1and achieves a tetracycline removal efficiency of 78%. Such excellent performance is attributed to the charge transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction in the PCN-Ce-MOF composite during the reaction process, while retaining the intrinsic redox capabilities of both materials. Meanwhile, mechanistic studies reveal that tetracycline can effectively capture holes during its efficient degradation, inhibit electron–hole recombination, and promote proton reduction to generate hydrogen. This investigation provides valuable insights for the rational design of S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts, aiming to achieve efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen production and synergistic degradation of organic pollutants.

Engineering Z-Scheme FeOOH/PCN with Fast Photoelectron Transfer and Surface Redox Kinetics for Efficient Solar-Driven CO2 Reduction

Shangcong Sun,Bo Peng,Ye Song,Ruoyu Wang,Haitao Song,Wei Lin

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) without sacrificial agents offers an attractive alternative in sustainable energy research; nevertheless, it is often retarded by the sluggish water oxidation kinetics and severe charge recombination. To this end, a Z-scheme iron oxyhydroxide/polymeric carbon nitride (FeOOH/PCN) heterojunction, as identified by quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is constructed. In this heterostructure, the two-dimensional FeOOH nanorod provides rich coordinatively unsaturated sites and highly oxidative photoinduced holes to boost the sluggish water decomposition kinetics. Meanwhile, PCN acts as a robust agent for CO2 reduction. Consequently, FeOOH/PCN achieves efficient CO2 photoreduction with a superior selectivity of CH4 (>85%), together with an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.4% at 420 nm that outperforms most two-step photosystems to date. This work offers an innovative strategy for the construction of photocatalytic systems toward solar fuel production.

A self-calibrating ratio fluorescence aptamer sensor based on PCN-224 for the highly sensitive detection of alternariol in cereals

Jiayu Chen,Chuang Yang,Runzhong Yu,Han Zhang,Liyuan Zhang

Alternariol (AOH) is an emerging mycotoxin widely found in agricultural products. It has drawn attention due to the potential health risks associated with long-term dietary exposure. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescent aptamer sensor based on PCN-224 was developed. By combining the intrinsic fluorescence properties of PCN-224 with aptamer recognition, sensitive detection of AOH was achieved. PCN-224 served as both a fluorescence platform and a source of internal reference signals, enabling self-calibrated ratio analysis. Under optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited good linear response in the range of 0.001–500 ng/mL. The LOD was 0.449 pg/mL. It also exhibited good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. This sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of AOH in cereal samples, demonstrating its reliability in the analysis of complex food matrices. This work provided an effective strategy for monitoring mycotoxins by combining MOF fluorescence regulation with aptamer recognition.

Facilitating charge separation by constructing CuInS2/PCN S-scheme heterojunction with the intimate contact interface for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Kefen Yang,Jinman Yang,Yusupu Yesire,Kang Zhong,Pengcheng Yan,Huanzhi Liu,Huaming Li,Yanhua Song,Minqiang He,Hui Xu

Photocatalytic CO 2 conversion efficiency is still much lower than what is expected owing to the sluggish charge separation and transfer for many semiconductors. Herein, we fabricated a highly efficient S-scheme heterojunction by integrating the CuInS 2 (CIS) with the oxygen-doping brown polymer carbon nitride (PCN). The construction of CIS/PCN S-scheme heterojunction promotes spatial separation of photogenerated charge while maintaining their strong reduction capability. The formed intimate contact interface between the CIS and PCN provides the strong driving force for the transfer of photogenerated charge, which accelerates the electrons rapidly migrating from PCN to CIS through the tight interface, resulting in more reductive electrons participating in photocatalytic reaction. As a result, the CIS/PCN S-scheme heterostructure shows a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity with a CO yield rate of up to 105.89 μmol g -1 h −1 , which is 7 times higher than that of the CIS. Combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental results demonstrate the formation of an intimate contact interface is not only more conducive to CO 2 adsorption and activation but also lowers the reaction energy barrier of the conversion of CO 2 to CO. Meanwhile, ESR characterization reveals the electron transfer pathway of CIS/PCN for photocatalytic CO 2 conversion. This work may provide an illuminating insight into designing the S-scheme photocatalyst for enhanced CO 2 photoreduction.

Visible-light-driven Au/PCN-224/Cu(II) modified fabric with enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial and degradation activity and mechanism insight

Jinjuan Xue,Jiaqian Zhang,Meng Yuan,Yiting Lv,Zhaoxia Chen,Mingxin Wang

The development of novel photocatalytic platform for efficient water purification and sterilization is of utmost importance due to the significant threat of chronic diseases resulting from water pollution and bacterial contamination. Herein, a high-efficiency, easy-recyclable, and environment-friendly photocatalytic fabric was developed as a water disinfection and organic pollutant degradation platform. In which, microamounts of Au nanoparticles (2 wt%) and Cu(II) clusters (2.5 wt%) co-decorated porphyrinic MOF (Au/PCN-224/Cu(II)) coating was applied as photocatalytic surface, and flexible cotton fabric served as stable support. Au/PCN-224/Cu(II) composite photocatalyst was prepared via a facile photo-deposition procedure followed by impregnation method, and further immobilized onto polydopamine (PDA) pre-treated cotton fabric through catechol-amine reaction. The fabricated photocatalytic platform exhibited excellent ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) by multiple routes under low-power visible light irradiation, and achieved efficient photodisinfection effects for causative organism including Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) without the obvious leakage of metal ions from the potocatalyst during the reaction. Additionally, the reaction rate constant for organic dye MB photodegradation achieved by Au/PCN-224/Cu(II)@Fabric was 3.73 times higher than that of PCN-224@Fabric, and the degradation intermediates analysis was also conducted. The band alignments of PCN-224, Au/PCN-224, Au/PCN-224/Cu(II) photocatalysts were determined, and the charge transfer mechanism within Au/PCN-224/Cu(II) photocatalyst was elucidated through the utilization of DRS, Mott − Schottky, ESR, EIS, and photocurrent analyses. It is suggested that the deposition of Au and doping of Cu(II) both with small amounts enhanced the light absorption capacity, and also improved the charge separation ability through the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and interfacial electron transfer (IFCT) mechanism. Moreover, Au SPR and Cu doping exhibited a substantial enhancement in photothermal conversion effect, thereby synergistically reinforcing the sterilization performance. This work provides an approach for the development of effective photocatalytic platform based on porphyrinic MOFs combined with trace metal co-catalysts in the application of water disinfection and purification.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor for ochratoxin A detection using AgPt bimetallic nanoparticles decorated iron-porphyrinic metal-organic framework for signal amplification

Jing Zhang,Xiaojian Xu,Yue Qiang

An ultrasensitive electrochemical ochratoxin A (OTA) aptasensor was designed using AgPt bimetallic nanoparticles decorated iron-porphyrinic metal-organic framework (PCN-223-Fe) as electrochemical tracer. PCN-223-Fe was synthesized with zirconium ion as node and iron-porphyrin as linker, and in situ supported with PtAg bimetallic nanoparticles to obtain AgPt/PCN-223-Fe composite. Spindle-shaped AgPt/PCN-223-Fe was characterized by electron microscopies, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Due to the synergistic effect, AgPt/PCN-223-Fe modified electrode exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity to oxygen reduction. Sequentially, AgPt/PCN-223-Fe was combined with streptavidin (SA) to prepare electrochemical tracer. SA/AgPt/PCN-223-Fe introduced into the electrode surface capturing OTA aptamer through the recognition of biotin and streptavidin, which lead to a strong electrochemical signal from oxygen reduction. When OTA existed in solution, the aptamer was bonded with OTA preferentially, and electrochemical signal reduced. The proposed approach showed a wide linear range from 20 fg mL −1 to 2 ng mL −1 and a low detection limit of 14 fg mL −1 (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the aptasensor showed good reproducibility, stability and selectivity, which was successfully applied for OTA detection in red wine and corn samples. This strategy broadens application of metal-organic frameworks, and could be used for other toxins detection.
