In this study, a new Al-LPM composite coating was in-situ deposited on the Al alloy via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method . Morphological and compositional characterizations revealed a tri-layered structure of the Al-LPM coating, namely, zinc aluminum-layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/MoS 2 . ZnAL-LDH was deposited closest to the surface of Al alloy , and the metallic ion-cross-linking of PEDOT:PSS makes the 3D coating more robust. The unique structure endows the coating with superior protective properties against both corrosion and wear. For anti-corrosion, the Al-LPM coating showed very high self-corrosion potential (-0.092 V) and small self-corrosion current density (46.0 μA cm −2 ) (vs. Al substrate with -1.157 V and 354.8 μA cm −2 , respectively), long-lasting high corrosion resistance (>57,000 Ω cm 2 ) during the immersion test, and the almost intact surface morphology and composition after 360 h corrosion. For anti-wear, the friction coefficient of the Al-LPM coating was determined to be < 0.2, which was much smaller than for the Al substrate (> 0.4). Also, there were no serious wear marks and grooves left after the dry-friction test.

Organic thermoelectric fibers have great potential as wearable thermoelectric textiles because of their one-dimensional structure and high flexibility. However, the insufficient thermoelectric performance, high fabrication cost, and mechanical fragility of most organic thermoelectric fibers significantly limit their practical applications. Here, we employ a rapid and cost-effective wet-spinning method to prepare dimethyl sulfoxide-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) fiber bundles, followed by rational post-treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid (98% H 2 SO 4 ) to enhance their thermoelectric performance. The wearable fiber bundles composed of multiple individual PEDOT:PSS fibers have effectively reduced resistance and overall high tensile strength and stability. Rational treatment with H 2 SO 4 partially removes excessive PSS, thereby increasing the electrical conductivity to 4464 S cm ‒1 , while the parallel bundle is also a major factor in improving the power factor of up to 80.8 μW m ‒1 K ‒2 , which is super-competitive compared with those of currently published studies. Besides, the thermoelectric device based on these fiber bundles exhibits high flexibility and promising output power of 2.25 nW at a temperature difference of 25 K. Our work provides insights into the fabrication of all-organic flexible high-conductivity textiles with high thermoelectric properties. Graphical

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) has emerged as a promising candidate for high-cost transparent conductive oxide (TCO) electrodes. However, achieving high conductivity in PEDOT:PSS typically requires treatment with strong acids, which presents inherent risks. In this study, we propose an alternative approach utilizing a mild methane sulfonic acid (MSA) treatment for PEDOT:PSS as a transparent conductive electrode (TCE). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses unveil heightened phase separation between PEDOT and PSS by MSA treatment, accompanied by structural modifications in PEDOT. Moreover, the interfacial morphology between the MSA-treated electrode and the hole injection layer underwent significant changes. It is precisely this improved interface morphology, combined with enhanced conductivity, that significantly improves the efficiency of the obtained TCO-free blue quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) by 300 % compared to the reference device. Finally, leveraging the high performance of the TCO-free blue QLEDs, we fabricate the above device on a yellow-emissive phosphors-in-glass substrate, enabling a white light-emitting LED (WLED) device. This experiment not only elucidates the structural changes in PEDOT:PSS under mild acid treatment but also introduces an innovative strategy for developing high-performance PEDOT:PSS electrodes.

Stretchable conductive hydrogels have received significant attention due to their possibility of being utilized in wearable electronics and healthcare devices. In this work, a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) strategy was employed to fabricate a set of flexible, stretchable and conductive composite hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde as the crosslinker, HCl as the catalyst and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as the conductive medium. The results from FTIR, Raman, SEM and TGA indicate that a chemical crosslinking network and interactions of PVA and PEDOT:PSS exist in the SIPN hydrogels. The swelling ratio of hydrogels decreased with increasing content of PEDOT:PSS. Due to the chemical crosslinking network and interactions of PVA and PEDOT:PSS, PVA networks semi-interpenetrated with PEDOT:PSS exhibited excellent tensile and compression properties. The tensile strength and elongation at breakage of the composite hydrogels with 0.14 wt% PEDOT:PSS were 70 KPa and 239%, respectively. The compression stress of the composite hydrogels with 0.14 wt% PEDOT:PSS at a strain of 50% was about 216 KPa. The electrical conductivity of the hydrogels increased with increasing PEDOT:PSS content. The flexible, stretchable and conductive properties endow the composite hydrogel sensor with a superior gauge factor of up to 4.4 (strain: 100%). Coupling the strain sensing capability to the flexibility, good mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity, we consider that the designed PVA/PEDOT:PSS composite hydrogels have promising applications in wearable devices , such as flexible electronic skin and sensitive strain sensors.

The recent advancement of stretchable photoelectronics has catalyzed revolutionary transformations in various cutting-edge fields. However, the stretchable transparent electrodes (STEs), which are vital components ensuring signal conduction in stretchable photoelectronics, pose a challenge due to the rigid and fragile nature of conventional conductive materials. In this study, we demonstrated a prestrain transfer technique for fabricating STEs using PEDOT:PSS. The resulting STEs achieved a sheet resistance of approximately 50 Ω/sq by leveraging the benefits of methanesulfonic acid treatment and incorporating a carbon-nanotube blend in PEDOT:PSS. The fabricated STEs exhibited exceptional transparency exceeding 90% and remarkable stability over 1000 stretching cycles without degradation in conductance. An in situ investigation was conducted to visualize the deformation of the PEDOT:PSS film and its association with the electrical ductility of the STEs. The prestrain transfer was found to induce kirigami-type cracks and out-of-plane microwrinkles in the PEDOT:PSS film. These structures effectively alleviate stress concentration and compensate for strain during stretching loading, thereby imparting enhanced stretchability and electrical ductility to the STEs. However, once the stretching strain exceeded the prestrain threshold, numerous microcracks emerged on the PEDOT:PSS film, leading to electrical failure of the STEs due to a significant rise in resistance. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes was demonstrated to modulate crack structures, thereby enhancing both the mechanical and electrical ductility of STEs. Additionally, a theoretical model was proposed to quantitatively analyze the morphological evolutions in the PEDOT:PSS film while establishing its correlation with the mechanical and electrical properties of the STEs. The parameters associated with crack structures, sensitivity of resistance to cracks, and tensile limit of PEDOT:PSS were extracted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of prestrain engineering on the electrical ductility and failure of the STEs. The present results offer guidance for experimental and theoretical approaches for optimizing the fabrication process of stretchable electronics.

Aqueous zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) are expected to become a new generation of energy storage systems because of their unique advantages. However, the dendritic problem of the Zn anode is still a bottleneck for their large-scale applications. Herein, we introduce a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) layer on a Zn anode to tackle the dendrite issue. Benefiting from good adhesion and film-forming characteristics, PEDOT:PSS is evenly coated on a zinc anode surface by a simple coating strategy to form a dense artificial film. The well-ordered PEDOT:PSS layer can effectively regulate the deposition direction of zinc ions and effectively prevent water from the zinc surface, resulting in uniform Zn plating/stripping without dendrite growth. A symmetrical cell assembled with PEDOT:PSS@Zn exhibits dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping behavior with stable cycling over 2670 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2 and can also operate correctly at 10 mA cm–2 for up to 420 h. In addition, this ultrastable anode is equipped with an AC cathode to enable a stable full capacitor with long cycle stability (10,000 cycles).

Organic/inorganic hybrid material properties and their interfaces are essential to obtain excellent device performance. In this paper, an heterojunction ultraviolet (UV) organic photodetector (OPD) based on organic/inorganic zinc oxide (ZnO)/aurum (Au)/poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythio-phene):poly(4-styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was manufactured and display outstanding photoelectric performance. For the fabrication of ZnO/Au/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction UV OPD, this heterojunction exhibits excellent UV optical detection performance. And further analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Compared with ZnO UV PD, the responsivity of ZnO/Au/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction UV OPD reaches 0.181 A W −1 , which is about 3.69 times higher. Furthermore, ZnO/Au/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction UV OPD shows light-to-dark current ratio (I light /I dark ) (1.19 × 10 3 ), external quantum efficiency (EQE) (59%), detectivity (D*) (1.39 × 10 11 Jones) and linear dynamic range (LDR) (61.5 dB). The preparation of inorganic/organic ZnO/Au/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction UV OPD in this work exhibits small organic/inorganic stress at the heterojunction, which provides new insights for the research of organic/inorganic hybrid UV OPDs and application prospects.

Recent improvements in flexible electronics have increased the need to develop flexible and lightweight power sources. However, current flexible electrodes are limited by low capacitance, poor mechanical properties, and lack of cycling stability. In this article, we describe an ionic liquid-processed supramolecular assembly of cellulose and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene for the formation of a flexible and conductive cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT:poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) composite matrix. On this base, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were incorporated into the matrix to fabricate an MWCNT-reinforced cellulose/PEDOT:PSS film (MCPP), which exhibited favorable flexibility and conductivity. The MCPP-based electrode displayed comprehensively excellent electrochemical properties, such as a low resistance of 0.45 Ω, a high specific capacitance of 485 F g–1 at 1 A g–1, and good cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 95% after 2000 cycles at 2 A g–1. An MCPP-based symmetric solid-state supercapacitor with Ni foam as the current collector and PVA/KOH gel as the electrolyte exhibited a specific capacitance of 380 F g–1 at 0.25 A g–1 and achieved a maximum energy density of 13.2 Wh kg–1 (0.25 A g–1) with a power density of 0.126 kW kg–1 or an energy density of 4.86 Wh kg–1 at 10 A g–1, corresponding to a high power density of 4.99 kW kg–1. Another kind of MCPP-based solid-state supercapacitor without the Ni foam showed excellent flexibility and a high volumetric capacitance of 50.4 F cm–3 at 0.05 A cm–3. Both the electrodes and the supercapacitors were environmentally stable and could be operated under remarkable deformation or high temperature without damage to their structural integrity or a significant decrease in capacitive performance. Overall, this work provides a strategy for the fabrication of flexible and conductive energy-storage films with ionic liquid-processed cellulose as a medium.

Recently, stretchable electrochemical sensors have stood out as a powerful tool for the detection of soft cells and tissues, since they could perfectly comply with the deformation of living organisms and synchronously monitor mechanically evoked biomolecule release. However, existing strategies for the fabrication of stretchable electrochemical sensors still face with huge challenges due to scarce electrode materials, demanding processing techniques and great complexity in further functionalization. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy for one-step preparation of stretchable electrochemical biosensors by doping ionic liquid and catalyst into a conductive polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate), PEDOT:PSS). Bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide lithium salt as a small-molecule plasticizer can significantly improve the stretchability and conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film, and cobalt phthalocyanine as an electrocatalyst endows the film with excellent electrochemical sensing performance. Moreover, the functionalized PEDOT:PSS retained good cell biocompatibility with two extra dopants. These satisfactory properties allowed the real-time monitoring of stretch-induced transient hydrogen peroxide release from cells. This work presents a versatile strategy to fabricate conductive polymer-based stretchable electrodes with easy processing and excellent performance, which benefits the in-depth exploration of sophisticated life activities by electrochemical sensing.

Wearable strain–humidity sensors are increasingly recognized for their role in healthcare and detecting human motion signals. However, many strain–humidity sensors require complex manufacturing processes and have limited applicability. In this study, based on the good miscibility between natural rubber latex (NRL) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), PEDOT:PSS/NRL composite conductors are transferred onto fabric substrate through screen printing and prepared high-performance strain–humidity sensor. The PEDOT:PSS/NRL blends strain–humidity sensor exhibited good stability and durability (500 cycles) at 10% strain, achieves a gauge factor (GF) of 123.8 with excellent linearity, making it operational in detecting various human motions, such as finger bending, elbow bending, wrist bending, and so on. In addition, the PEDOT:PSS and water molecules interaction results in a humidity response time as low as 0.72 s and recovery time as low as 0.85 s for the PEDOT:PSS/NRL composite strain–humidity sensor, and a wide relative humidity detection range (6–83%), allowing it to be utilized for precise detection of human breathing. Furthermore, it can monitor the use's joint movement, facial muscle movement, and respiratory rate, which show its potential application prospect in health monitoring.

Inkjet-printed conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS films have provided a new developing direction for realizing the stretchable transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices. However, their conductivity and stretchability are limited as the presence of insulating PSS chains, rigid PEDOT conjugated backbone, and stronger inter-chain interactions in the pristine polymer, respectively. Here, we report a PEDOT:PSS film with preferable electrical and mechanical performances by inkjet-printing the formulated printable ink containing PEDOT:PSS, formamide (FA), d-sorbitol (SOR), sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (DBSS), and ethylene glycol (EG). The inkjet-printed uniform PEDOT:PSS film exhibits a high conductivity of 1050 S/cm and sheet resistance of less than 145 Ω/sq on both rigid and flexible substrates. Moreover, the resistance can remain stable after 200 cycles of stretching at 55% strain. The film also presents good stability during repetitive stretching–releasing cycles. The significantly enhanced conductivity of the film lies on the conformational transition of the backbone by secondary doping and post-treatment with FA as well as removing the excess PSS components after phase separation between PEDOT and PSS. Meanwhile, SOR serves as a plasticizer to break the original hydrogen bonds between PSSH chains and provides larger free volume for polymer chain extension, which gives the PEDOT:PSS film the ability to tolerant cyclic tension. This is one of the optimal performances currently reported for inkjet-printed stretchable PEDOT:PSS films. The inkjet-printed PEDOT:PSS film with high conductivity, stretching properties, as well as good biocompatibility exhibits promising prospects as anodes on optoelectronic devices.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials combining high flexibility, exceptional electrical conductivity, lightweight properties, and superior shielding performance remain crucial for modern microelectronic applications. This study presents a secondary doping approach employing dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) and concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to engineer highly conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) films. While DBSA treatment induced gelation of the PEDOT:PSS matrix and achieved a 6-fold lower conductivity compared to H2SO4-treated samples (reaching 63.6 dB), it yielded exceptional EMI shielding performance with a remarkable specific shielding effectiveness of 12,960 dB cm2 g–1. This outstanding performance was attributed to the synergistic interplay between the development of a layered architecture within the film and the significant enhancement in film thickness. Furthermore, the PEDOT:PSS/DBSA films demonstrated exceptional environmental stability, maintaining shielding effectiveness above 60 dB under harsh conditions, a performance benchmark meeting stringent military-grade requirements. This study underscores the critical balance between conductivity and microstructure attributes in governing shielding performance and presents a promising avenue for the development of highly efficient, flexible EMI shielding materials.
